The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – we’ve got a long 16-day window ahead, and honestly, it’s a tough one for surfers. The short version is: there’s nothing worth paddling out for here at Horace Caldwell Pier. The whole run is a write-off for decent waves.
The forecast kicks off with weak, short-period swell – we’re talking 3ft of SE windswell with a meagre 6 seconds between waves and a combined energy of just 72 (weak). Tuesday morning is cloudy and cross-onshore, and it only gets worse from there. The wind is a constant problem: onshore or cross-onshore from the SSE or SE, blowing 15 to 30 km/h (9 to 19 mph) every day, with a few fresh breezes piling on the chop. The water temp is sitting at 83°F with a tiny anomaly of +0.4°F, so pretty average for this time of year around here.
The whole first week is a mess. Thursday morning the 16th sees a bump to 4ft swell, but it’s still short-period (6 seconds) and the energy climbs to only 102 (moderate) – and with that SSE wind slamming straight onshore, it’s choppy, lumpy, and poor. Friday the 17th is the closest we get to anything, with 5ft SE swell and 7-second period, hitting a combined energy of 171 (moderate). But again, onshore and cross-onshore winds ruin any chance of a clean wave. This is a beginner-friendly beach/pier break, but 5ft with onshore wind is just messy, not fun.
After that, it’s a slow fade. From Saturday the 18th through the entire second week, swell drops to 1ft to 3ft, periods are a pathetic 4 to 6 seconds, and energy levels rarely break 70. The wind never lets up. By the time we get to the end of the month, it’s the same story: small, weak, onshore slop. The only slight change is Sunday the 26th morning, with 3ft SSE swell at 5 seconds and 56 energy – still not enough to get excited about.
There’s zero standout options here. No glassy mornings, no clean offshore flow, no long-period groundswell. For a beach/pier setup with this much wind, honestly, this looks more like a kite session than a paddle session. We’re looking at a blank run of 16 days with no real surf. That’s a tough stretch, but it happens here. Forecasts can change, so don’t lose hope entirely – but for now, leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
