The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here again, same story, different numbers. Let’s be real – the surf scene over the next couple of weeks is barely a scene at all. It’s flat, it’s choppy, and the wind just won’t give us a break. You’re not going to find any diamonds here, just a whole lot of nothing.
Starting Monday, August 17th, at Horace Caldwell Pier, we’ve got a weak 2ft swell from the southeast, but that cross-onshore breeze out of the SSE at 3 mph messes it up right away. The combined energy is just 26, and the waves are junk. Tuesday the 18th drops even smaller to 1ft, with a moderate south wind at 12 mph making it choppy. Energy at 23. This pattern doesn’t change.
Wednesday the 19th, Thursday the 20th, and Friday the 21st see swell bumping up to 3ft to 3ft, but the wind keeps blowing onshore or cross-onshore, hitting 19 mph on Thursday morning and turning it lumpy. Energy climbs to 88 by Friday morning, but the period is only 5 seconds – short-period, wind-affected slop. Poor surf all the way.
From the 22nd of August all the way into the 1st of September, it’s more of the same: tiny 2ft to 4ft swell, periods never beyond 6 seconds, and energy stuck in the teens to low 80s. The wind stays stubbornly onshore from the south or southeast. Only two mornings break the pattern.
On Friday, August 28th, we get a glassy morning – dead calm wind, no chop. Swell is just 2ft from the southeast at 5 seconds, energy at 29. Clean, but ridiculously small. Then on Sunday, August 30th, there’s a risk of thunderstorms, but again, glassy conditions with a 2ft, 4-second SE swell and energy at 21. If you’ve got a longboard and no standards, you might find a knee-high ripple.
The only “standout” is those two glassy windows, but with swell that tiny and weak, it’s a far cry from any real surf. The crowds at Horace Caldwell can show up sometimes, but I wouldn’t expect anyone to be out there for this. For a beginner, maybe it’s a paddle. For anyone else, it’s a hard pass.
To sum it up: a full 16 days of flat, wind-blown conditions. Water temp is about normal for the season. Not much else to say. Hang tight and wait for something better to roll in.
Rusty.
