Table - best surf conditions forecast for Horace Caldwell Pier over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me level with you about the stretch ahead. The outlook is pretty grim, to be honest. We’re looking at a long, flat run with no real surf to get excited about for the entire 16-day window. The first recommendation is for Saturday, July 11th, and it’s a dud from the get-go.
Right out of the gate, Saturday the 11th at Horace Caldwell Pier is a write-off. Swell is a meager 3 ft from the SE with a short period of 5 seconds, and the wind is onshore from the ESE at 9 mph. The wave energy is weak (47), and the conditions are just poor. The water’s warm at 84°, which is about average for the time of year, but that’s about the only positive thing I can say.
Sunday the 12th, Monday the 13th, Tuesday the 14th, Wednesday the 15th, Thursday the 16th, Friday the 17th, Saturday the 18th, Sunday the 19th, Monday the 20th, Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd, Thursday the 23rd, Friday the 24th, Saturday the 25th, and Sunday the 26th – it’s all the same story. Swell stays tiny, mostly under 4 ft, with period rarely getting past 7 seconds and wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and messy. The combined energy is weak, never breaking out of double digits except for a few days where it barely touches the low 100s (102 on Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon). That’s not enough to get excited about.
There is one bright spot, but it’s a tiny one. On Saturday, July 25th in the morning, the wind flips to a light offshore breeze from the W at just 3 mph, and the water goes glassy. The swell is still only 4 ft from the SSE with a short 5-second period, and the energy is weak (56). The conditions are clean, but it’s barely a ripple. And on Sunday, July 26th in the morning, we get a glassy, offshore wind from the WNW at 3 mph, with the same weak 3 ft SSE swell. It’s clean, but the wave quality is still rated as poor.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a paddle, this is a frustrating stretch. The wind is mostly onshore, the swell is tiny, and the period is short. With that wind and those small, weak waves, the setup at this beach/pier might actually be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, especially on the windier days.
To sum it up: there are two mornings – July 25th and July 26th – that offer clean, glassy conditions, but with such weak, short-period energy, it’s hard to call it surf. The rest of the 16 days is a total blank. It’s a tough run, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, but for now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
