The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the conditions are just not cooperating. Let’s break it down.
For the first few days, starting Thursday, August 20th, we’ve got a weak southeast swell pushing in around 2 feet at Horace Caldwell Pier, but the wind is on it from the SSE at 15 mph, making it a messy, blown-out affair. The combined energy is a weak 28, and the water is sitting at a warm 86°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions.” This pattern just drags on through the weekend and into the next week. Friday the 21st sees a similar story with a bit more cloud, 3 feet swell but cross-on winds, and the energy stays low in the 30s. Saturday and Sunday are even smaller, with swell dropping to 2 feet and periods of just 4 seconds – that’s barely a ripple. It’s not going to be worth paddling out.
There’s a long gap here with no real recommendations. From August 20th all the way through to the end of the month, it’s the same story: tiny swell, poor wind, and scores of zero. The energy readings are all in the teens, 20s, and 30s – weak, weak, weak. The swell direction is mostly SSE to SE, which is okay for the pier’s exposure, but the size is just too small and the wind is never truly offshore.
Things stay flat and choppy right through the end of August. By August 31st, we see a tiny bump – the swell finally hits 3 feet, but the wind is howling onshore at 19 mph from the SE. The energy creeps up to 54, but it’s still “poor surf conditions.” That’s not a surf day for a paddle board; that’s a day for the kite surfers, if anything.
The first days of September don’t offer a reprieve. On September 1st, the swell is 4 feet from the SE with a 6-second period, but the wind is on at 16 mph, and the energy is only 80. Still poor. The 2nd and 3rd of September bring fresh onshore winds at 19 mph, making the ocean lumpy and uninviting. The 4th of September has a risk of thunderstorms, and the swell is back to 4 feet, but again, the wind is on it.
So, what’s the best on offer? Honestly, there’s no standout. If I had to pick the least terrible moment, it would be the morning of September 1st. The swell is 4 feet from the SE with a 6-second period, and the wind is on at 16 mph. The combined energy is 80 – still weak. It’s a beginner-friendly height at the pier, but it’s not clean. The wind is onshore, so it’s not going to be pretty. It’s a “maybe check it if you’re desperate” kind of day.
The bottom line: this is a dead run for the area. The forecasts can change, but right now, the 16-day window is a blank. Hang tight, check back later, and don’t bother waxing up just yet.
