The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat and let’s look at what’s headed our way.
To be honest, mate, it’s a tough stretch. For the next 16 days, from July 13th right through to July 28th, the only break on the radar is Horace Caldwell Pier – a beach and pier setup that’s fairly exposed to the swell. But the problem is, the conditions are just not playing ball. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1 ft to 4 ft, and it’s coming from the SE with a short, weak period of just 4 to 7 seconds. That’s all windswell, not groundswell, so the energy is low – the combined energy values are all weak, sitting between 22 and 161. The water temp is sitting at 84°, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a full suit.
The first few days are a write-off. Monday the 13th through Friday the 17th, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, mostly from the S, SSE, or SE, blowing at 9 to 19 mph. That’s choppy, lumpy, and ugly. The wave comment category is “poor surf conditions” across the board. Even when the swell nudges up to 4 ft on the 16th and 17th, the wind is just too strong and onshore – it’s a mess. If you’re a kite surfer, that combo of wind and chop might look fun, but for pushing a surfboard, it’s hard work.
The weekend of the 19th and 20th is no better – the swell drops back to 3 ft or less, and the wind is still onshore. By Monday the 21st, the swell bottoms out at 1 ft to 2 ft. That’s barely a ripple. Even the second week, from the 22nd to the 28th, the story is the same: tiny swell, short period, and persistent cross-onshore winds. The wind actually picks up again on the 27th and 28th, hitting 19 to 22 mph from the SSE, making it even lumpier.
There is no standout period here. No day where the swell, wind, and conditions line up. The swell direction is SE, which matches the optimum for the break, but the size is too small and the wind is just wrong. For a beginner, the swell never gets above 5 ft, so it’s not too big, but the chop and onshore wind make it uninviting for anyone.
So, honestly, the outlook is flat and messy. There’s a 16-day gap with no real surfable options. The break is fairly consistent, but when the conditions are like this, it’s just a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the board in the car and maybe go for a fish.
