The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – we’re in a flat spell. Over the next 16 days, there’s not a single standout session on the cards for Freeport Channel. This is a stretch of nothing but tiny, weak, and often choppy surf, so if you’re desperate for a paddle, you’re better off waiting for a change in the weather.
The outlook kicks off Sunday the 16th of August, but don’t get your hopes up. We’ve got a combined swell energy of just 28 (weak) – a tiny 2 ft SSE swell with a period of only 6 seconds. That’s short-period, weak, wind-slop, not real surf. The wind’s a cross-onshore from the ESE at 3 mph, just enough to mess up what little’s out there. It’s poor, mate. Scores of 0 across the board. Monday the 17th morning goes glassy, but the swell drops to 2 ft and the energy plummets to 15. Still zero surf quality. That sets the tone: we bounce between 0.7 ft and 3 ft of swell for the whole 16-day run, with the energy never cracking 33.
The water temp here is 86°, with a 1° anomaly – pretty much normal for the time of year. Not that you’ll be in the water long with nothing to ride.
There are no real highlights, but if I had to pick something to keep an eye on, Thursday the 21st of August morning shows the biggest pulse – 3 ft from the S at 5 seconds, with onshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph. That’s about as good as it gets, and it’s still messy. The rest of the days are a mix of cross-on and onshore winds, with a few glassy mornings (like the 29th and 30th of August) that’ll look clean but have bugger-all swell.
Fundamentally, Freeport Channel (Freeport, United States) is a sheltered, inconsistent spot to begin with, and this outlook proves it. There’s no decent surf here for the entire 16-day window. A few of the mornings with glassy conditions might tempt you, but the waves just aren’t there. For kite surfing, the afternoon sea breezes could get you going, but for a surfboard? It’s a bust. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d leave the board at home.
