The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for Freeport Channel.

We’ve got a pretty bleak run of surf ahead. The good news? None. The honest truth is that for the next couple of weeks, this spot is offering almost nothing for a paddle surfer. We’re looking at a solid 15-day stretch of small, weak, onshore slop. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the first week of September, every single session shows "poor surf conditions." There’s no standout day, no sneaky groundswell pulse to get excited about.

Starting this Saturday morning, the 22nd, it’s cross-on with a tiny 1ft of short-period, weak swell out of the SSW. The combined energy is barely a whisper at just 8 (weak). That theme continues day after day. Wind is almost always cross-on or onshore, light to moderate, keeping the surface bumpy and the waves messy. By Wednesday the 26th, the swell bumps up slightly to 2ft, but the period is still a pathetic 4 seconds, and the energy is only at 24. Still poor.

The only real change in the pattern comes right at the tail end of the forecast. On Sunday the 6th of September, the swell finally starts to show some legs. The morning brings a 4ft swell from the SE with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 97 (moderate). It’s still not clean—wind is onshore—but it’s the biggest we’ve seen. Then the afternoon jumps up to 6ft from the SE with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 287 (strong). That’s a proper amount of water moving, but the wind is a fresh 16 mph cross-onshore, and the report still says "poor surf conditions." For a beach/pier setup like this, with that kind of wind and chop, it’s honestly looking more like a session for a kite surfer than a longboarder.

With no consistency and the rare mention of "inconsistent" in the books, this kind of blank run isn't too unusual for the area. Forecasts can change, but for now, the board stays in the van.
