The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for Block Island over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s been a bit of a slow start, and we’re looking at a long gap before anything really gets going.
The first few days here are a bust. From Thursday, July 16th right through to Saturday, July 18th, we’ve got poor surf conditions with tiny, weak swell and messy cross-onshore winds. The water’s a bit colder than usual for mid-July, sitting at 68°, a touch over a degree below average. You’re better off staying on the beach with a cold one.
The first real glimmer of hope comes Sunday, July 19th. The swell picks up to a solid 7ft, coming from the SSW with a period of 8 seconds and moderate wave energy (459). That’s a decent size, but it’s a bit much for the groms. The wind turns cross-offshore from the west, which will clean things up nicely. It’s a point break that rarely breaks, so when it does, it’s a special thing. Keep in mind, crowds are often a factor here, so it won’t be just you out there. This is the standout of the whole outlook.
Monday, July 20th the swell drops off a touch to 4ft, but it’s still a bit messy with a light cross-onshore wind. Thursday, July 23rd morning sees a smaller 4ft SSE swell with clean cross-offshore winds from the NE, but it’s only marginal.
Then we get another window on Wednesday, July 22nd. The swell is back up to 7ft from the south with a moderate period of 8 seconds (558). This is a solid, powerful wave, but that size is really only for the experienced crew. The wind is clean cross-offshore from the WNW, so it should be looking good. Again, a rare break and it’s pumping.
The end of the week into the weekend (July 24th-26th) gets a bit more complicated. There’s a 6ft SSE swell on Friday morning, July 24th, with clean cross-offshore winds, but the quality is poor. Then Saturday, July 25th has a smaller 4ft swell with a cross-shore wind, so it’s just okay. Sunday, July 26th sees another big pulse of 7ft SSW swell (867), but it’s onshore and choppy. That’s a lot of power, but it’ll be a mess.
After that, from Monday, July 27th through to the end of the month, it’s mostly small, weak, and unappealing with poor conditions. The last day of the month, July 31st, has a 5ft SSE swell, but it’s lumpy with cross-shore wind.
So, to sum it up: the best bet is Sunday, July 19th for that rare, clean, overhead point break, but be ready for a crowd. Wednesday, July 22nd is the other big one, but only for the experts. Everything else is a bit of a gamble or a hard pass. Keep an eye on the forecasts, it won’t stay this quiet forever.
Rusty.
