Table - best surf conditions forecast for Block Island over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the outlook for Block Island. And honestly, for the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a quiet stretch, but we’ve got a few moments that could be worth a paddle if you’re keen.
The 16-day window starts with a whole lot of nothing. From Thursday, July 9th, right through to Tuesday, July 21st, the surf is just poor. It’s a long run of small, weak, and messy conditions. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, and the wind is all over the place – cross, cross-on, and onshore for most of it. The wave energy is weak, barely cracking 100 (62-98 range), so don’t expect much push. For a spot that’s a point break and rarely breaks, this is a normal quiet spell; the forecasts can change, but right now it’s a flat spell.
The standouts here are few and far between. The best chance we’ve got lines up on Wednesday, July 15th, and Tuesday, July 21st.
Hit Wednesday morning, July 15th. The wind is glassy – zero, calm – and that’s a massive plus for clean conditions. Swell is from the SW at 4 ft, with a period of 7 seconds. The wave energy is moderate (142). It’s a bit short period, so it’ll be a bit fat, but with glassy conditions, you’ll get some fun, clean lines. The optimum swell direction is SE for Block Island, so this SW swell isn’t perfect, but on a rare-breaking point, you take what you can get. The water temp is about 67°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a wetsuit.
Then, on Tuesday, July 21st, we see a bit more size. The morning brings 6 ft from the ESE (combined energy 147), and by the afternoon it’s 7 ft from the SSE (energy 330). That afternoon is a bit bigger, but it’s also cross-on and choppy. The morning might have a slightly cleaner window, but with the wind on it, it’s not going to be pristine. At 7 ft, this is getting into expert territory, especially given the wind. The SSE swell is closer to the optimum SE direction, so it’s got a better angle for the point.
The rest of the period is a write-off. Wednesday, July 22nd, has some size (6 ft, energy 508), but it’s with a risk of thunderstorms, cross-on winds, and lumpy conditions. Not worth the drive.
If you’re desperate, the Wednesday the 15th morning is your best shot. It’s clean, and the point might just offer a few glassy waves. Tuesday the 21st morning has the size, but the wind is a problem. For the rest, it’s a waiting game. This is a rare-breaking spot, and the forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a tough call.
Rusty.
