Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's cooking for Block Island. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are gonna be a bit of a grind. There’s a rough patch ahead, but we might just get a little reward at the end.
The pattern shaping up is pretty grim for a while. We've got a mix of strong cross-shore winds and messy cross-chop that’s going to kill the quality for a long stretch. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
Starting off Tuesday the 7th, it’s a write-off. A strong 25 mph ENE breeze is pumping in a 5 ft ESE windswell with a short, gutless 6-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 212, but it’s all cross-chop and poor conditions. That afternoon is not much better with a 6 ft swell but still a strong 25 mph wind. You’d be mad to paddle out.
Wednesday the 8th is still marginal. The morning has a cleaner look with a light 6 mph E breeze, but the 5 ft swell only has a 7-second period and the energy is 248. It's a pass. The afternoon goes sour with onshore chop again.
From Thursday the 9th right through to the morning of Monday the 20th, it’s pretty much a flat, blown-out mess. Swell sizes are mostly under 3 ft and what little energy there is gets destroyed by onshore or cross-shore winds. There’s a tiny break of clean conditions here and there, but nothing worth getting wet for. This is a solid 11-day gap with no real offers.
Now, Monday the 20th is the one highlight in the whole outlook. The morning looks bloody promising. We’ve got a clean 3 ft southerly swell with an 8-second period pushing in 221 units of moderate energy. The real kicker is the wind: calm, glassy conditions with 0 mph wind. That’ll mean silky smooth waves. The swell direction (S) matches the optimum direction for the spot.
Block Island is a point break here, and it’s rated for intermediate surfers. It rarely breaks, so when it does line up like this, it’s a special window. The water will be glassy and the peaks will be clean. That said, keep in mind the crowds come often at this spot, and with the conditions looking this good, you can bet it’ll be busy.
Tuesday the 22nd is a bit of a wildcard. The morning has a 5 ft southerly swell with a clean offshore NE wind, giving a moderate energy reading of 277. The conditions are clean, but the score is only marginal. Could be worth a look if you’re desperate, but don’t expect much.
So, there you have it. A long, dry spell, but if you’re patient, Monday the 20th is your best shot for some clean, glassy waves at Block Island.
Stay tuned, forecasts can always shift. This is Rusty, signing off.
