Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Block Island over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you—it’s a rough stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry spell before anything worth paddling out for even shows up on the radar.
For the first week and a half, it’s pretty grim. From Sunday, July 5th, all the way through to the morning of Thursday, July 16th, it’s just one poor report after another. The swell that does show up is tiny and weak or gets completely trashed by strong onshore winds. That Monday, July 6th, we see some size push in—over 7 ft—but it comes with a screaming ESE wind at 28 mph, making it a messy, blown-out washout. Not worth a second look. The mid-week brings cleaner conditions with some offshore winds on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the swell drops right off, barely scraping 3 ft. It’s clean, sure, but there’s just no energy behind it.
The one little glimmer in this whole outlook is the morning of Saturday, July 11th. A 4 ft south swell, with an 8-second period and a clean cross-offshore breeze out of the north. The combined energy is moderate at 225, and with the wind light at 6 mph, the wave comment says “expect good surf conditions.” For Block Island, which is a point break that rarely breaks and can get crowded, this is your window. You’ll want to be on it early before the winds shift and the crowds show up. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
After that little tease, it’s back to the doldrums. The following week is a mix of weak swell and crummy wind, though Sunday, July 12th afternoon goes glassy with a 2 ft wave—flat as a pancake, but at least it’s pretty out. Then, on Saturday, July 18th, we finally see some real size again: an 8 ft SSW swell with a 9-second period. That’s solid, over 8 ft, so it’s expert territory. The combined energy is strong at 998, but the wind is light and onshore, so the surf is likely fat and closed-out. It’s a marginal call. After that, the swell hangs around 7 ft to 7 ft through the 19th and 20th, but it’s all cross-onshore and lumpy, not doing the point any favors.
Honestly, if you’re not on it for that Saturday morning, July 11th, you might as well save your energy. This stretch is mostly about waiting for the next system to line up right.
Rusty.
