Table - best surf conditions forecast for Block Island over the next 16 days.
Alright, grab your coffee or your beer, 'cause Rusty here has looked into the upcoming forecast for the Block Island area, and I gotta be straight with you right from the jump. We've got a 16-day window ahead, but it’s gonna be a long, flat, and frustrating wait before anything worthwhile shows up.
Right now, through the 26th of July, the swell is tiny, the winds are crap, and the sea state is just plain ugly for surfing. We’re looking at a solid two-week stretch of nothing. The largest swell we see in that whole period is a 6ft wave on the afternoon of the 15th, but that’s paired with a fresh cross-shore wind and a messy, choppy surface. The combined wave energy is moderate at best, hitting 395 at one point, but the quality just isn't there. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so you won't get a surprise chill if you do paddle out, but honestly, why would you? For most of this time, the wind is either onshore or strong cross-shore, and the waves are just a sloppy mess. If you’re into kite surfing, those Tuesday/Wednesday periods (14th-15th) with a fresh breeze and 5ft+ swell might look more interesting than anything for a paddle board.
For nearly two weeks, we don’t have a single decent recommendation. It's a tough stretch for the area.
Then, finally, something changes. On the 27th of July, a Sunday morning, we finally get a break. Block Island itself is the spot to be. The morning is looking glassy—dead calm wind from the ESE at just 6 mph. That’s a massive positive; clean, smooth conditions are half the battle. We’ll have a 6ft swell rolling in from the SSW with an 8-second period. The combined wave energy is a solid 395, and for the first time, it's actually described as “good surf conditions.” It won’t be perfect, but after two weeks of nothing, it’s the only game in town. Keep in mind, Block Island is a “rarely breaks” point setup, and it can get crowded, so getting it on a day like this will be a bit of a madhouse. The swell direction is coming from the south-southwest, which is close to what this break wants. This is the one and only standout in the whole run.
So to sum it up: you’ve got two weeks of pure frustration, followed by one promising, glassy morning at Block Island. Keep your eyes on that 27th. It’s not a huge swell, but with that wind, it’ll be the best we see.
Rusty.
