Table - best surf conditions forecast for Block Island over the next 16 days.
Alright, let's get stuck into this for you.
First up, we're looking at Block Island. This is a point break that can offer up some nice lines when conditions align, but honestly, for the next couple of weeks, we are in for a tough run. It's a spot that rarely breaks, and for the vast majority of this outlook, it's just not happening. Most of the time, the ocean is looking pretty miserable there.
Looking at the water temp on the first recommendation date, Friday the 10th of July, the water is sitting at a chilly 65°F, which is 4°F colder than average for this time of year. That's a noticeable hit to the core temperature for sure.
Starting Friday the 10th through to the early morning of Wednesday the 22nd of July, we're looking at a long stretch of no good surf. There's swell, but it's small, weak, and the wind is all over the place. We see a lot of cross-shore and onshore slop. The wave energy on Friday the 10th morning was a measly 58 (weak), and things don't improve much. We get a bump on Tuesday the 14th with a 7 ft SW swell showing up in the afternoon, but it's getting hit by a strong 25 mph wind, making it a total mess – that combined energy hits 333 (moderate) but it’s pure chop. That pattern of mushy and messy continues for days on end.
Finally, we get a green shoot. On the morning of Wednesday the 22nd of July, we might finally see some decent waves. The swell drops a bit to 7 ft from the ENE with a period of 7 seconds, and crucially, the wind is light and clean out of the north. The combined energy is a meaty 408 (strong), suggesting there's some push there. The wind is blowing cross-offshore, which will make for some clean, rippable faces. This is the standout in what's otherwise a grim forecast. This swell is pushing 7 ft, so it’s not for beginners – it's for the experienced crew.
After that, it all falls apart again. By the afternoon the wind swings onshore, and the rest of the month looks like more of the same messy, blown-out conditions. We get some 5 ft S swell on Saturday the 25th, but it's accompanied by cross-shore winds again, so expect lumpy, choppy surf.
So, to be brutally honest, the outlook is poor. The one day to circle on your calendar is the morning of Wednesday, July 22nd, if you can get there for that clean, powerful ENE groundswell. Before that, it’s a bust for paddling. Some of those stronger, choppier days in the middle of the period might actually be more interesting for the kite crew.
