The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’re taking a long look at the waters around Block Island, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. For a spot that’s a classic point break that rarely breaks, we’re in for a real test of patience.
The first week is a mixed bag, but the real standout is coming up on Thursday morning, July 23rd. We’ve got a solid 5.6 ft swell rolling in from the S, with a period of 10 seconds giving it some real punch. The combined energy of all swells is a solid (623) – that’s moderate wave energy. The real kicker is the wind: a light offshore from the N at 12 mph. That’s going to clean things up nicely, making for some really well-shaped, clean lines at the point. It’s a bit of a rare event for this spot, so if you can get out there, you’ll be in for a treat. Remember, it’s an intermediate break, so that size is manageable.
The days leading up to it are a grind. Sunday the 19th has a brief shot of 4.9 ft swell from the SSW with a 7-second period, but the wind is howling, and the quality is just not there. The energy is a weak (231) for that morning. The rest of the first week sees small, messy, choppy surf with onshore winds, making it pretty much a washout.
Now, for the second week, things get even more grim. From July 28th onwards, we’re looking at a long, blank run. The swell drops off a cliff, with heights barely scraping 3.3 ft and the wind is just never your friend. A few days see a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is too weak to do anything with. The energy readings are in the low double digits to under 100, which is weak. Honestly, starting around the 28th, the forecast looks like a complete lull with no real surf to speak of for the rest of the period.
So, the takeaway? Keep your eyes on Thursday morning, July 23rd. That’s your one real window. The rest of the 16 days? It’s a long wait for a wave that probably isn’t coming. I’ll be there on the 23rd, hoping for the best.
