The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Block Island over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – we’ve got a long wait ahead.
The first few days are a write-off. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th might look like there’s movement, but the winds are messy and the swell is weak and choppy. Not worth paddling out for. The real action doesn’t start to build until mid-week.
Wednesday the 22nd is where things get interesting, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. A big pulse of swell pushes through, with waves hitting 10 ft from the SSW. The combined wave energy is strong (1150), which means there’s plenty of power. However, the morning wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy and hard to ride. This is expert-only territory. If you’re a beginner, stay on the sand. The afternoon gets even messier with a choppy cross-onshore. Not the cleanest, but the size is undeniable.
Now, Thursday the 23rd is our standout window. The morning session at Block Island (point break) is where you want to be. The swell drops a bit to a solid 7 ft from the S, still packing moderate energy (751), but the wind swings to a clean offshore from the W at 12 mph. That’s going to groom the waves into something special. The period is a solid 9 seconds, giving them shape and push. This is a classic point break setup, and with the right wind, it’ll be the pick of the run. Keep in mind, this spot rarely breaks, so when it does, it’s a treat. Crowds are likely though, so get there early.
After that, the rest of the week and into the first of August fades out. The swell drops off, winds become onshore or cross-shore, and we’re back to small, ordinary conditions. There’s a glimpse of something on Sunday the 2nd of August with a 8 ft S swell (510 energy) and a clean offshore from the NE in the morning, but the period is short at 7 seconds, making it a bit fat and less exciting. It’s worth checking if you’re desperate, but don’t get your hopes up.
Water temps are sitting around 68°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want a spring suit.
Overall, the best bet is Thursday morning the 23rd. It’s not a long window, but if you’re on it, you’ll score.
