Table - best surf conditions forecast for Block Island over the next 16 days.
G'day, Rusty here, looking at the surf outlook for Block Island. It's a pretty quiet start, but there's a pulse of energy coming later in the week and into the following week. The water temp is running about 66°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want a spring suit.
For the first several days, it's a flat spell. There’s really nothing to get excited about from Sunday the 12th right through most of the week. We've got tiny, weak swells under 3 ft, with short-period wind slop and cross-shore winds. The combined energy is weak, barely cracking 48. It's a write-off. You'd be better off finding something else to do.
Then things start to shift around Sunday the 19th. The swell picks up to 7 ft from the east, but it's still a bit messy with a cross-shore wind in the morning. The standout moment comes Sunday afternoon. The wind swings to a light offshore from the west, the swell is 7 ft from the east, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 412. The waves should be clean and well-shaped. This is a serious option, but keep in mind, Block Island (point) is a spot that *rarely breaks*, so this is a rare opportunity. The period is only 7 seconds, so it's a short-period wind swell, but with that offshore wind, it'll be fun.
Monday the 20th morning still has some grunt, with 6 ft of east swell and a fresh offshore wind from the north (combined energy 488). That's a solid wave, but the wind is strong, so it might be a bit on the windy side for some. It's still a good option for the experienced crew.
The middle of the following week, around Tuesday the 21st to Thursday the 23rd, the swell drops right back down to under 3 ft, with onshore winds and choppy conditions. Another quiet spell.
Then we start looking at the next weekend. Saturday the 25th has a 4 ft south swell, but it's wind-affected, and Sunday the 26th builds a big 8 ft southwest swell, with combined energy of 1094. That's a lot of water, but it's a messy cross-shore wind, so the quality is poor. That's a big, lumpy option for experts only.
The final real standout comes on Monday the 27th. The wind drops to a light, glassy offshore from the west, with a clean 5 ft south swell (period 8 seconds, combined energy 251). That's a super clean, fun wave for the morning. The crowd situation at Block Island is listed as "often" busy, so expect some company.
Alright, that's the long view. The real bright spots are the Sunday the 19th afternoon and the Monday the 27th morning. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
