Table - best surf conditions forecast for Block Island over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty, and I'm looking straight at the 16-day window for Block Island. Gotta be honest with you, it's a tough stretch. The forecast is pretty bleak for most of it, and we're looking at a long, dry spell to kick things off.
We start off with nothing worth paddling out for. From Saturday the 11th right through the rest of July and into the new week, the conditions are just plain messy. We've got onshore winds, weak energy, and a lot of chop. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, and period is short, so the waves are going to be all over the place. You'd be fighting a losing battle out there.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn't show up until Monday the 20th. The morning session is a no-go, with a cross-offshore wind but the energy is still weak and the surf quality is poor. But by Monday afternoon, things start to shift. We get a clean, cross-offshore wind and the swell jumps up to 7 ft from the south (587 combined energy). It's a big step up in power, but the report says the surf is still marginal. At that size, it's getting into the territory where it's better left for the experienced crew.
Now, here is the one standout. Tuesday the 21st morning is the session to circle on your calendar. The wind goes glassy – dead calm – which is a major win. The swell is a solid 5 ft from the south, with a period of 9 seconds and a strong wave energy value (427). That combination of clean, glassy conditions and a decent groundswell from the south is about as good as it gets when the rest of the window looks so bleak. The afternoon turns onshore and messy, but that morning window is the real deal. Keep in mind, this is a long-range call, so it's promising but not a guarantee.
After that, the window goes quiet again. The rest of the week falls back into the same pattern: onshore winds, chop, and weak, short-period swell. There's a couple of days near the end, like Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th, where the wind turns clean offshore, but the swell drops back to around 3.5 ft to 4.5 ft with only moderate energy (151 to 181). It's surfable, but pretty ordinary. The real energy just disappears.
So, to sum it up: the first nine days are a write-off. The only real chance to get a proper wave in clean conditions is Tuesday morning the 21st at Block Island. Get on it if you can, but don't expect much else to happen in this 16-day window.
