The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, letting you know how things are shaping up for Block Island. It’s a bit of a flat spell to kick things off, with the next solid window worth paddling out for being about a week away.
We’ve got a stretch of poor conditions from now through to the 18th and into the 19th, but keep an eye on Sunday morning, July 19th. That’s where things get interesting. We’ll see a solid 5 ft swell from the SW with a period around 7 seconds. The wind is a clean NW offshore at 12 mph, so faces should be clean. The combined wave energy is moderate (268), so there’s decent push. It’s a rare break for Block Island, so when it’s on, it’s worth making the call. Water temps are sitting at 68°F, pretty average for this time of year. Just a heads up – it's an exposed point that can get crowded, so expect company.
From there, things fall off again quickly. Monday morning, July 20th looks glassy with a 3 ft swell from the SSW and a period of 8 seconds, but the energy is weak (111) and there’s just not enough push. After that, we’re into a long quiet stretch. The next flicker of hope arrives Wednesday morning, July 22nd, when a 8 ft S swell rolls in with a long 9-second period and heavy energy (915), but the cross-onshore wind is strong at 19 mph. That same day, the afternoon bumps to 10 ft from the SSW (2503 energy), but the wind picks up to 22 mph from the SW, making it a messy, lumpy mess – honestly, that’s more for the kite crowd.
Thursday morning, July 23rd is clean again: 5 ft from the SSW at 9 seconds, with cross-offshore wind from the WNW at 9 mph. Moderate energy (388) and good conditions, but the swell is backing down.
After that, the rest of the month into early August looks pretty flat and wind-affected. There’s a brief mention of Tuesday morning, July 28th with a 6 ft SSW swell and 7-second period pushing moderate energy (587), but the wind is cross-onshore again, so it’s marginal at best.
So to sum it up: if you want a wave, your best bet is Sunday morning, July 19th – clean, moderate swell, offshore wind, and a rare break that could deliver. After that, it’s mostly a waiting game with small windows of hope. Stay tuned, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
