The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here again. Let's break this down for Block Island. It’s a rough start, plain and simple.
We’re staring down a long dry spell of poor conditions right from the beginning. The wind is either cross or onshore, and the swell is just not cooperating. You’re looking at a gap of more than a week with no real surf to speak of, all the way up to the morning of July 20th.
Your first real chance comes on Monday, July 20th in the morning. The wind goes glassy, and we’ve got a clean 4ft S swell with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 238. This is your standout session, a rare, clean moment for a spot that *rarely breaks* like this. It’ll be crowded, no doubt, but it’s the best on offer.
Things get messy again until Wednesday, July 22nd. That morning, the swell jumps to 6ft from the S with a longer 9-second period, pushing a solid 586 combined energy. The wind is cross-off from the WNW, keeping it clean. At 6ft, this is for the more experienced crew. The next morning, Thursday, July 23rd, is another glassy moment with a 5ft S swell, but it’s a bit smaller.
The second week offers a few more chances. Sunday, July 26th morning brings a 4ft SE swell with clean offshore NW wind, but it’s nothing special. Then Monday, July 27th morning has a 6ft SSW swell with light cross-off wind and a combined energy of 329, a decent paddle for the right crew.
Beginners should stick to the July 20th glassy morning. The bigger swells later in the month are for the experts. The water is running a bit colder than normal for the time of year at 67°F.
Keep your eyes on the 20th and 23rd. The rest of the window is a gamble.
Rusty.
