The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down the 52nd Street surf outlook for the next 16 days.

It’s a painfully slow start around here. From Friday, August 14th, all the way through Thursday, August 27th, we’re looking at a major drought. The swell is tiny, mostly 0.3 ft to 3 ft, and the combined energy is low, barely getting into triple digits. The wind is all over the place—cross-shore, onshore, choppy—and the forecast keeps calling it “poor surf conditions.” There’s a glassy morning on the 14th, but the swell is only 0.3 ft from the SE. You’d be chasing ripples. The water is warm, about 78°, running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about all the good news.

The first sign of life comes on Friday, August 28th. The morning session at 52nd Street shows a 2 ft SE swell with a 10-second period, cross-offshore wind from the NW at 9 mph, and clean conditions. The combined energy is 90 – still weak, but it’s the best we’ve seen. They call it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a small window, and the afternoon gets blown out.

The real standout is Saturday, August 29th, in the afternoon. The wind drops to glassy, just 3 mph from the WSW, and the swell is 2 ft from the E with a 7-second period. The combined energy hits 107 – moderate – and the conditions are clean. This is the best we’re going to get. The waves are small, but with glassy conditions, it’ll be a fun little session for an intermediate surfer. The swell is a bit off the optimum SSE direction, but the glass makes up for it. Remember, 52nd Street is a beach/jetty spot and inconsistent, so you’ll need to be patient. Crowds are often around, so expect some company.

Outside of that Saturday afternoon, it’s a long, quiet stretch. Nothing else worth getting wet for.

Rusty.
