The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be real, it’s a tough stretch ahead for 5th Street. We’re looking at a long dry spell with almost nothing worth paddling out for. The first real swell of any note doesn’t show up until Wednesday, July 22nd, and even then, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Most of the first five days are a write-off: tiny, onshore, messy, or just plain flat. There’s a lot of waiting for the ocean to come to life.
The water is unusually warm, about 77°, which is over four degrees warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a bathtub out there.
The first tiny glimpse of something is on Sunday morning, July 19th. We get a clean 3 ft swell from the south, with a gentle offshore wind from the northwest. It’s rideable, but it’s small and weak, with combined energy only at 72 (weak). You’ll be working for scraps.
The only real standout in this whole 16-day window is Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd. The swell jumps to 8 ft from the south, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy hits 1216 (strong). That’s proper size. The problem is the wind is cross-shore from the southwest, which will put a bit of a chop on it. It’s not glassy, but it’s surfable for the more experienced crew. For a beach/jetty setup, that size is getting into expert territory, especially with the period being a bit short. It’s the best on offer, but it’s not perfect.
After that, we drop back into smaller, cleaner windows on Thursday, July 23rd, with 3 ft from the SSE and offshore NW winds. It’s clean, but nothing to write home about. The rest of the run into early August is a mix of small, onshore slop and cross-offshore wind. Nothing stands out.
If you’re a kiter, those days with the strong cross-shore winds and solid 5 ft+ swell might be more interesting than paddling. For the rest of us, hold tight.
