The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Costellos over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a grim picture for the next ten days or so. There’s a long stretch of nothing happening, with the first real chance of a wave not showing up until Monday the 20th, and even that is just barely surfable. From Wednesday the 15th all the way through to Sunday the 19th, the combined energy is mostly below 100 (weak) and the swell is tiny, often under 1 foot, with poor surf conditions across the board. It’s a proper flat spell, so don’t even bother waxing up.
The first glimmer of hope comes Monday morning, the 20th of July. We get a tiny pulse of 2ft SE swell at 10 seconds, with clean conditions and a light offshore breeze from the SW. The combined energy is still weak at 53, and the waves are described as "surfable but very ordinary". It’s a small window for a longboard or a foamie, but it’s not going to get the heart racing.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. The following days are a mix of tiny, messy swells and poor conditions. The combined energy stays mostly in the weak range (41-138), with a brief spike to 138 on Tuesday the 21st afternoon, but that’s coupled with a messy 5ft swell from the SSE at a short 6 seconds, and heavy rain. Not exactly inviting.
The real standout, if you can call it that, arrives late in the forecast period. On Sunday the 26th of July, we finally see a consistent run of moderate offshore winds from the W at 12 mph. The morning has 3ft SE swell at 7 seconds, and the afternoon bumps up to 4ft from the SSE at a very short 4 seconds. The combined energy is still weak (73 and 59), but the wind is clean and offshore. The waves are still "surfable but very ordinary", but for a reef break that’s inconsistent, this is about as good as it gets in this window. The water temperature is 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit.
Honestly, there’s no single day here that screams "best". The best on offer is that Sunday the 26th, simply because the offshore wind will make the most of the tiny, short-period swell. For a spot that’s inconsistent and rarely breaks properly, you take what you can get. It’s not a day for beginners – the swell is small enough for anyone, but the quality is low. For experts, it’s a chance to get a few clean but gutless waves.
The rest of the second week is more of the same: tiny swells, weak energy, and mostly cross-shore or onshore winds. The 28th and 29th have some glassy mornings, but the swell is a feeble 2ft from the SE. It’s a long, flat run with only a few barely surfable moments. The forecast can always change, but for now, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
