The Lowdown
Second Text in Imperial Units:
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s break down Fortress over the next couple weeks.
First thing: it’s a dry spell for a long time. From now until late August, there’s basically nothing worth paddling for. The combined swell energy is weak (under 100) and the waves are tiny and messy. It’s a proper gap.
Water temp is about 73°F, which is 1°F above normal – so average for the time of year.
The first real chance comes late on Thursday, August 27th. You get a 5ft swell from the S, period of 7 seconds, and it’s clean with a moderate cross-off wind. Combined energy hits 336, but the forecast says it’s still just marginal.
Your best bet is Friday morning, August 28th. A clean 4ft swell from the S at 8 seconds, with light offshore N winds at 9 mph, and combined energy of 222. It’s clean, it’s the pick of the lot. That afternoon gets bigger – 5ft from the S, period up to 9 seconds, combined energy of 699 – but the wind turns cross-shore, making it marginal.
After that, it drops off again into small, ordinary surf through the end of August and into early September. A few pulses show up but with messy winds and poor direction. For a fairly consistent reef, this is a quiet run. The standout session is Friday morning the 28th of August. Don’t waste your time the rest of the fortnight.
Rusty.
