Table - best surf conditions forecast for Fortress over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Fortress is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak, and often messy conditions. The first real surf worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Saturday the 18th, and even then, it’s a mixed bag. So, we’ve got a big gap of quiet days up front with nothing to recommend.
The water temp is sitting at about 68°F, which is just a touch cooler than average for this time of year, but nothing to shake a wetsuit at.
For the first week, we’re basically in a dry spell. From Thursday the 9th through to the morning of Saturday the 18th, the swell is tiny – mostly under 2ft – and the wind is a constant problem. Even when the wind is offshore, the swell is just too weak to do anything with. The combined energy is stuck in the double digits, barely cracking 61 at its best, which is near-flat. It’s a lot of glassy, clean-looking water with no push. If you’re a beginner, you might get a fun 1ft ankle-snapper, but honestly, it’s not worth the trip.
The real shift happens on Saturday the 18th. A pulse of swell rolls in, lifting the waves to 7ft in the morning and 7ft by the afternoon, coming from the SSW. The combined energy jumps to 280 then 506 – that’s a solid wall of power. This is a short-period swell (6 to 7 seconds), so it’ll be a bit lumpy and won’t have that long, drawn-out line. The wind is cross-offshore, which will keep the surface reasonably clean, but at that size, it’s pushing into expert territory. Beginners should stay well clear. The afternoon has a risk of thunderstorms, so keep an eye on the sky.
Sunday the 19th sees the swell drop back to 4ft, but the wind swings onshore and the conditions turn poor again. Then, on Monday the 20th, we get a brief window of hope. The morning shows 3ft swell from the S with a 8-second period, and the wind is light and cross-offshore from the North. The combined energy is 223, which is a decent moderate punch. This is the best-run of the whole outlook. The waves will be clean, and the energy is there for a fun session. But it’s short-lived – by the afternoon, the wind turns onshore and messes it up.
The rest of the week into the 24th stays small and poor, with onshore winds dominating. The 21st of July has a glassy morning with 3ft, but the energy is only 102, so it’s a bit gutless.
The Pick: If you’ve got the skills, the Saturday the 18th afternoon slot is the standout for power, with 7ft waves and a raw, punchy feel. For the average surfer, Monday the 20th morning is your best bet – clean, 3ft, and enough energy to have a proper session. Crowds are *often* an issue here, so expect company.
Rusty.
