The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the beach. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week or so is a bit of a tough one. We're looking at a real dry spell, with tiny, weak, messy waves. You'll be waitin' until the 31st of August just to see a ripple that's barely surfable, and even then, it's nothin' to write home about. The real action doesn't start to build until we get into September.
The best bet on the whole board, the one that's got me a little excited, is the morning of Thursday, September 3rd at Castles. This is a sandbar break, so it's a bit of a gamble, but the conditions are aligning. We've got a clean 4ft swell rollin' in out of the SE, with a nice 13-second period behind it. That's some proper groundswell with real push. The wind is a light WSW cross-off, which is gonna leave the surface glassy. The combined energy is a solid 374, which is moderate, but it's the cleanest, most promising window we've got. The water is much warmer than usual for this time of year, sittin' around 78°, so you can leave the steamer at home.
The morning of Friday, September 4th is another one to circle on the calendar. The swell is pushin' up to 6ft from the ESE, still with that 13-second period and a cross-off wind from the W. The energy jumps way up to 1001, which is strong. Now, 6ft is getting into the territory where it might be a bit much for beginners, but for the rest of us, it's a solid, clean wave. Keep an eye on that tide, though, as the report flags it as a bit questionable.
The whole first week of September is a definite step up from the August doldrums. The swell stays consistent, and the winds are mostly offshore. The 6th of September has a nice 5ft swell with a clean offshore wind in the morning, though the period drops to 8 seconds, making it a bit more of a windswell feel.
So, to sum it up for a local lad: Wait it out. The beginning is a write-off. The standouts are the mornings of September 3rd and 4th at Castles. Get on it before the wind shifts in the afternoon. It's a promising forecast, but it's a game of patience.
Rusty.
