Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with ya – the next 16 days at Wooden Jetties are a tough watch. We’re looking at a real dry spell where the surf just isn’t cooperating. The water’s sitting at a balmy 79°, which is a whole lot warmer than normal for this time of year, almost 8° above average, so that’s a weird one, but it won’t help the waves.
Right from the start, Sunday afternoon the 5th of July, it’s a write-off. We’ve got a tiny 2ft SSE swell with a short 8-second period, and a southerly breeze is blowing straight onshore. The combined energy is a weak 66, and it’s just poor. That sets the tone for the whole forecast.
Monday the 6th starts glassy in the morning, but the swell is even smaller at 2ft with a period of only 5 seconds and energy at just 25 – it’s practically flat. Same story Tuesday the 7th: a bit of a bump to 4ft from the ENE, but the period is still a weak 6 seconds, and while the wind is cross-off, the energy is only 115 (moderate), and the wave comment says poor. It’s just not doing anything for us.
We go through day after day of this. Wednesday the 8th, Thursday the 9th, Friday the 10th – all the same: small swells, short periods, and onshore or cross-shore winds. The best we get is a glassy 2ft on Friday morning, but with a 5-second period and energy of 34, that’s not surf, that’s a lake. The energy never gets strong enough to make it worthwhile, and the “poor surf conditions” tag sticks like glue.
There’s a stretch from the 5th right through to the 20th of July with no real standouts. The swell heights rarely top 4ft, and when they do, like on Saturday the 11th, the energy hits 139 (moderate) but the wind is a fresh cross-shore making it lumpy. The whole period is a gap of good surf – basically, we’re looking at two and a half weeks with nothing to get excited about. The only change is on the 19th and 20th, where we get some clean offshore winds, but the swell is still tiny (2ft to 3ft) with weak energy (38 to 48) and short periods. It’s clean, but there’s no power behind it.
Look, in a set-up like this at a beach/jetty break, it’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing when the wind is up and the swell is poor. For now, we’re in a proper lull. It tends not to stay this poor for long, and forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to recommend. Keep your gear ready, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
