The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days at Wooden Jetties are a tough watch. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly dodgy wind, so don’t go getting your hopes up too early. The water is sitting at 77°F with a much warmer than normal anomaly of 5°F, which is notably warm for this time of year, but that’s about the only bright spot for a while.
The first real surfable day doesn’t show up until the morning of Sunday, 19 July, and even then it’s ordinary. You’ve got a 3ft SSE swell at 7 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the west at 6 mph. It’s clean, but the combined wave energy is weak (69). It’s beginner-friendly, but nothing to get excited about. That afternoon, the swell bumps to 3ft from the south, same period, with a gentle offshore breeze, and energy climbs a bit (91) – still just surfable but very ordinary.
Monday, 20 July, is a write-off. The swell pushes to 3ft from the SSE, but the wind swings cross-on from the east, and the energy is moderate (151) – poor conditions, choppy, not worth it.
Tuesday, 21 July, shows a slight pulse. The morning has 4ft S swell at 6 seconds, but the wind is cross-shore and the energy is only 99. The afternoon, however, is the standout of the whole outlook. The swell hits 5ft from the south at 7 seconds, with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the WSW at 12 mph. The combined energy jumps to 277 – moderate to strong. This is the best on offer, but it’s only for intermediate and above, as 5ft can get a bit much for beginners. The swell direction is from the south, which is a fair match for the optimum SE direction, but the period is short, so expect lumpy, sectiony waves. Crowds are possible here, so keep an eye out.
Wednesday, 22 July, has a cleaner morning with 3ft SSE swell at 9 seconds and a light offshore from the NW – energy is moderate (113) and the waves are clean but small. The afternoon goes glassy with 3ft SSE swell and 9-second period, but energy drops to 88. Still surfable, but small.
From Thursday, 23 July, through to the end of the month, it’s dry. The swell drops to 1ft–3ft, the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, and the energy is weak (22–94). The last small glimmer is Tuesday, 28 July, morning, with 3ft SE swell at 7 seconds and a clean cross-offshore breeze, but the energy is only 81, and it’s just very ordinary.
So, to sum it up: the only real standout is Tuesday afternoon, 21 July, with 5ft south swell and clean wind. The rest is small, weak, and mostly messy. The gap after that is solid – from 23 July right through to the end of the 16-day window, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. It’s one of those blank runs that’s pretty normal for the area, but don’t lose hope – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
