Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming our way at Wooden Jetties. Grab a coffee, this is a long one, but I’ll get straight to it.
To be honest with you, over the next 16 days, Wooden Jetties is pretty flat. There’s no real stand-out swell to get excited about, and the conditions are often messy or just too small. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing much. It starts off quiet and looks like it will stay that way right through until the middle of the month. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
From Saturday the 4th right through to Tuesday the 8th, it’s pretty hopeless. We’re talking tiny little 0.7ft to 2ft swells, mostly from the SSE or ESE, with periods all over the place but nothing special. Winds are cross-on or onshore a lot of the time, making for choppy or rippled surfaces. The combined energy is barely registering, stuck in the teens and low twenties (17 to 54), which is weak. Honestly, you’d be better off doing something else.
Wednesday the 8th sees a slight bump, but it’s still small. A morning of cross-off wind from the north at 12 mph might keep things clean, with a tiny 3ft SSE swell, but the period is short at 7 seconds. The energy is still low (85). Not worth paddling out for.
There’s a little more hope on Thursday the 10th afternoon. The swell picks up to 3ft from the SSE with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind swings to a cross-off from the WSW at a gentle 9 mph. It stays clean, and the energy bumps up a touch to 79. Still, it’s not going to be anything to write home about.
Now, a glimmer. On Sunday the 12th, we get a bit of offshore wind from the NW at 12 mph in the morning. The swell is a weak 2ft from the east with a short period of 5 seconds, but clean conditions might make it rideable for the intermediates. The energy is still low (34). Same again Monday the 13th morning—offshore NW at 12 mph, 2ft east swell, clean. Not exactly firing.
The best of the lot, and I mean *best* in a very quiet period, comes on Monday the 13th afternoon. Glassy conditions—that’s right, glassy—with a slight air from the NNW. The swell is only 1.0ft from the SE, but the period stretches out to 10 seconds, which is decent. The energy is moderate at 55. For a tiny wave, that long period might give it a little more shape, but it’s still tiny. A beach/jetty setup like this isn’t ideal for long-period groundswell, but with glass, you might find a fun little wave if you’re on a longboard.
After that, it drops right back. On Wednesday the 15th morning, the swell jumps to 5ft from the SSW, but the period is a short 6 seconds and the wind is cross at 16 mph. The energy is moderate at 235, but the quality is poor. That’s more of a messy, bumpy day.
The final few days from the 16th to the 19th are a mixed bag of tiny swell and inconsistent wind, with nothing approaching a proper surf. The 19th sees a 4ft SSW swell, but it’s cross-on and choppy.
So, if you’re desperate, the glassy afternoon on Monday the 13th of July is your best bet, and even then, take a longboard and low expectations. Otherwise, this is a dry spell. It tends not to stay poor for long around here, but for this two-week window, it’s a tough one. Forecaster confidence is low on anything beyond the next few days, but the outlook is clear.
Rusty.
