Alright, Rusty here again, but in feet and miles for you.
It’s a tough stretch at Wooden Jetties through the whole 16 days. This beach and jetty spot likes SE swell, but conditions just won’t come together for any standout paddle. There’s no real prize session in this entire run. The water is a warm 24°, which is 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, feels like a bath even if the waves aren’t there.
Saturday 4th July starts flat. A tiny 1 ft swell from the SE with a 9-second period, combined energy is weak (16). The morning has a light cross-off breeze, but the surf is just too poor.
Sunday 5th is even smaller – 0.7 ft from the ESE, with onshore winds and a risk of thunderstorms. Stay home.
Monday 6th we get a bump to 2 ft and 2 ft, but with a terrible 5-second period – pure chop. Combined energy is still weak (23 and 48). Afternoon wind is near calm but cross-on, so still messy.
Now, Tuesday 7th July is the most interesting moment. We see a 4 ft swell from the ENE, period of 6 seconds – short period wind swell. Combined energy hits a moderate 118. The wind is from the NNE, giving us a clean cross-off. This is the biggest swell, but at 4 ft, it’s still fine for intermediates. The wind is a moderate breeze, but offshore, so the waves will be clean. This Tuesday morning is really the only window you might find a few fun ones, even if the period is short. Afternoon stays clean too.
After that Wednesday 8th drops off – 3 ft from the ENE, but the wind turns onshore in the afternoon. The morning has a clean, gentle cross-off, but it’s only a 1 out of 10 day – surfable but very ordinary.
From Thursday 9th all the way to Sunday 19th July, it’s a long flat run of poor conditions. Swell sizes mostly bounce around 1 ft to 3 ft, but the wind is almost always onshore, cross, or messy. Combined energy figures are very weak, most under 100. There’s a moment on Saturday 11th morning with glassy conditions, but it’s only 1 ft – too small to ride.
Even the middle of the second week, like Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th, we see energy hit 109, but the period drops to a terrible 4 seconds, and the winds are cross-on chop. That’s not for a paddle – with that wind and short-period chop, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than surfing.
So the take-home is: the best on offer is the Tuesday 7th July morning. It’s not epic, but it’s the only window with clean, offshore wind and the biggest swell. Get out early, enjoy the unusually warm water, and you might get a few. Otherwise, it’s a blank run, and that’s pretty normal for this area when the swell and wind don’t line up.
Rusty.
