The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
We’re looking at a pretty quiet stretch at Wooden Jetties. The whole 16 days has long gaps with no real surf. The first few days are a bust, and then there’s a big lull through the middle of the week. The only real action is a short window around Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd, but it’s not firing.
The water is 78°F, and it’s way warmer than normal – over 5°F above average. That’s a real oddity.
Saturday the 18th is a total loss. Tiny swell, rain showers, and a cross-shore breeze. Don’t bother. Sunday morning the 19th is the first chance. It’s clean with a light offshore wind from the NNW, but the swell is only 3 ft from the south, and the energy is weak at 73. It’s surfable, but just barely.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are poor. Onshore winds and tiny waves. No good.
Wednesday the 22nd is the biggest push. The morning has a 5 ft south swell with a cross-shore wind, and the energy is moderate at 313. By the afternoon, the swell jumps to 8 ft from the south, and the energy rockets to 1328 – that’s strong and powerful. The wind is cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. At 8 ft, that’s expert only. Too big for beginners. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s a mixed bag.
Thursday the 23rd is the cleanest day. The morning has a 3 ft south-southeast swell with a clean offshore wind from the NW. The energy is 100. The afternoon is glassy with a cross-offshore breeze, and the swell drops to 3 ft. This is the best combo of clean conditions and small, rideable waves.
After that, from Friday the 24th all the way through to Sunday the 2nd of August, it’s a long run of poor surf. The swell stays under 3 ft for most of it, with onshore or cross-shore winds. There’s a slight bump on the 31st of July and the 1st of August, with 4 ft to 4 ft from the south, but the wind is cross-onshore and it’s choppy. The energy on the 2nd of August morning hits 304, but it’s still onshore.
Honestly, if you’re a kite surfer, the Wednesday afternoon with 8 ft and cross-shore wind might be more interesting than a paddle session. For a surfer, the standouts are Thursday morning the 23rd for the cleanest small waves, or maybe the Wednesday afternoon if you’re an expert and don’t mind the chop. Crowds are possible here sometimes, but with this quality, you’ll likely have it to yourself.
It’s a long wait for small windows. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
