The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Wooden Jetties over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you: the water’s real warm right now, sittin’ at 78°F and a massive 5°F above normal for this time of year. That’s a strange one – feels like bathwater, but it’s gonna be a long wait before you can actually enjoy it.
Honestly, this stretch is a tough one. We’re looking at a whole lot of “poor surf conditions” on the cards for the first week and a half. There’s a big gap of nothing really rideable from Thursday 16 July all the way through to the morning of Wednesday 22 July. Light ripples, cross-shore junk, and tiny swell – you’d be better off with a cold drink.
A glimmer shows up Wednesday 22 July morning. The wind goes offshore from the NNW at 15 mph, cleanin’ up a modest 3ft of SSE swell. The combined energy is still low (95), but it’s surfable. That afternoon the wind eases right back to a light NE cross-off, with 3ft SSE swell and clean conditions (88 energy). It’s not gonna get your heart racing, but for a paddle and a few trim rides, it’ll do.
Then we get a nasty little spike on Thursday 23 July – swell jumps to 5ft from the NE, but the period is a short, weak 6 seconds, and the wind is howlin’ cross-shore from the ENE at 19 mph. The energy reads 149, but it’s gonna be a lumpy, messy mess. Not your day.
The best of the whole run, and I mean the only real standout, is Saturday 25 July morning. You get a 4ft swell from the SE with a 9-second period, which is a bit more organised. The wind is light WSW at 6 mph, cross-off, and the water is clean. The combined energy is a solid 182 – moderate, but the best we’ve seen. This is your window. It’s still only surfable, not epic, but it’s the pick of a pretty average bunch. After that, the afternoon gets blown out again with a bumpy 5ft and onshore wind.
The rest of the run into the end of the month and the start of August is more of the same: small, choppy, and messy. A few clean moments on the 31st with a cross-off WSW breeze, but the swell is tiny at 2ft. Not much to write home about.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate, hit the water on Saturday 25 July morning. The rest of the forecast is a write-off for a proper surf. Sometimes it’s like that here – just gotta wait for the next change.
Rusty.
