The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me level with you about what’s on the table at Wooden Jetties over the next couple of weeks. I’ve gotta be straight—this is a grim run for a wave. There’s nothing worth paddling out for until the very end of the period, and even then, it’s not exactly a classic.
Right now we’re stuck in a flat spell. Swell heights hang between about 2 ft and 2 ft right through Thursday the 22nd, mostly wind-affected, and the energy readings are pathetic—down in the 20s and 30s (weak energy). The wind’s all over the shop: Tuesday morning it’s a light cross-onshore from ENE at 6 mph, Thursday it’s cloudy with an onshore breeze. Even when it goes glassy on Friday morning the 21st, the swell is a measly 1.0 ft from ESE, giving you nothing to ride. This stretch is basically a write-off.
From Saturday the 24th to the end of August, there’s a little more bump in the water—swell bumps to about 2 ft to 3 ft—but the direction is all over the place (S, SSE, SE), the periods are short mostly (4 to 7 seconds), and the wind chops it up. The energy starts to climb into the mid-double digits (around 50-96) but it’s messy, not surfable. That’s a lot of days with no wave.
Then we hit the 31st August (Monday morning). Finally, something happens. Swell kicks up to about 6 ft from the east with a short 6-second period, the combined energy jumps to 256 (moderate wave energy). Winds are light WSW at 3 mph, giving you a clean window. It’s surfable but very ordinary—especially with that short period. This is the one standout, but it’s not a gem. For the experts, those bigger pulses on the 27th and 28th August bring strong cross-off winds from the west, so it’s clean, but the swell is small (about 2 ft to 3 ft) with steady energy in the 132–177 range (moderate). These are clean but tiny.
By the 1st and 2nd September, it’s back to the doldrums: knee-high slop with onshore crud.
So look, if you must surf, Monday morning 31st August is your best bet—it’s the only window with size and clean conditions. But it’s short period and average quality. Other than that, it’s a barren run for two weeks. Don’t hold your breath—but forecasts can change, and it rarely stays this flat forever.
Stay tuned.
Rusty.
