Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Wooden Jetties.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are lookin’ pretty flat and sad for us. The swell is tiny and the conditions are messy. We’re not talking about any real surf action right now. There’s a long stretch of days with only weak, small waves and poor quality, so don't get your hopes up for the near future.
Let’s start with the current scene. It’s Monday the 6th of July, and we’ve got a tiny 2ft SSE swell, but it’s a short 4-second period, so it’s just a messy chop with an onshore wind. The wave energy is barely a whisper at just 18 (weak energy). It’s poor. The water temperature is a toasty 78°, which is a massive 8° warmer than normal – that’s very unusual for this time of year, so you’ll be sweating in your wetsuit if you bother paddling out.
Tuesday and Wednesday are much the same story – tiny swells under 3ft, all with poor cross or onshore winds. The energy stays well under 100, making it weak. There’s just nothing to work with.
Then, we get a little bit of a pulse on Thursday the 13th of July, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The swell jumps to 6ft from the E on Thursday morning, with the wave energy hitting 341 (moderate energy). By afternoon, it’s pushing 7ft with a combined energy of 551 (strong energy). That’s a solid amount of water moving, but the wind is a fresh 18-22 mph cross-shore, so it’s gonna be a lumpy, choppy mess. This is expert territory due to the size and the messy conditions. It’s poor surf quality all the way. Honestly, with that kind of wind and swell on a beach/jetty setup, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The rest of the period stays small and usually onshore. There are a few moments of glassy or offshore wind, like the morning of Thursday the 16th (NW 3 mph, glassy) with a tiny 2ft S swell, or Saturday the 18th morning (calm, glassy) with a 2ft SSE swell. But these are just clean, tiny waves. The energy is weak, well under 100. The only other note is the morning of Tuesday the 21st, where we get a near-gale 34 mph cross-off wind from the NNE, but the swell is still only 2ft. It’ll be clean but so small you won’t even need to paddle.
Honestly, looking at this whole 16-day run, there is no standout day. The swell is consistently poor, the conditions are messy, and the size is either too small or too messy when it does show up. It’s a blank spell. But you know Wooden Jetties, it doesn’t stay this poor forever – forecasts can change.
Stay patient,
Rusty.
