The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day window for Shit Pipe is a real heartbreaker. The whole stretch is a write-off. There’s nothing that comes close to being worth a paddle. The first few days are a total loss, and from there it just stays flat and messy. We’re talking a solid two weeks-plus of nothing doing. The forecast has a few moments of glassy water, but there’s just no swell to go with it. The combined energy of all swells directed here barely cracks two digits most days (84, 64, 54), and even the highest reading is a weak 239 – that’s weak energy, no power behind it. For a spot that’s exposed, that’s a sad sight.

The first real chance, if you’re desperate, might be Thursday morning, July 23. For a brief moment, we get glassy conditions with a NNW breeze at 3 mph, and the swell is 4 ft from the SSW with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy reaches 206 – still moderate, but the glassy wind is a major positive for clean faces. The problem is, the swell is short-period and not doing much, and the direction is from the SSW, while the optimum direction for Shit Pipe is ESE. So it’s not set up right. After that, it’s back to trash. Friday the 24th drops to 2 ft, and the wind goes onshore from the E. It’s a downhill slide from there into August, with tiny swell and onshore or cross-shore winds.

The water temperature is about 84°F with a normal anomaly of 0.7°, so it’s average for this time of year – nothing to write home about.

Honestly, if you’re looking at this stretch, the setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The winds are consistent and the swell is weak, but a kite might get something out of the breeze. For surfers, this is a blank run. It’s a normal thing for this area when the conditions line up this way – we just have to wait for the next change. Stay patient, mate.

Rusty.
