The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the outlook for Jax Beach Pier is a real tough one. We’re looking at a long, quiet stretch ahead. The water temp is sitting at 85°, which is about 2° above average – so it’s a warm bath, but that’s about the only upside right now.
The pattern starts off flat with no real surf to speak of. From Sunday the 19th through to the end of July, we’ve got a gap of about 12 days where there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The waves are tiny, the swell energy is weak (combined energy values are mostly in the 30s and 40s range, nothing to get excited about), and the wind is mostly cross or cross-off. The swell is coming from the SE, but it’s short-period windswell, around 4-6 seconds, which just doesn’t have any punch. It’s a beach/pier setup, so it’s exposed, but with that short period and small size, it’s just messy.
The strongest bit of energy we see is on the afternoon of Sunday the 26th, with a combined energy of 119 – that’s in the moderate range – but it comes with a risk of thunderstorms and a light cross-on wind. The swell height is only 3 ft from the ESE with an 8-second period. It’s a glimmer, but not a standout.
The only real standout – and I use that term loosely – is the morning of Saturday the 25th. We get a 3 ft swell from the ESE with an 8-second period, and the wind is light offshore from the SW. That’s your best bet for a clean, small wave session on a longboard or a foamie. The combined energy is 73, so it’s weak overall, but the offshore wind will clean it up. Crowds are often an issue here, so don’t expect to have it to yourself.
The rest of the run into early August is just as flat. Swell heights drop to 1 ft or less, with periods around 8-9 seconds, but the energy is in the teens or single digits. There’s a little bump on the afternoon of the 3rd of August, with a 4 ft SE swell and a 6-second period, but the wind is cross-off and the energy is 88 – still not enough to make it more than a knee-high dribble.
Bottom line: this is a proper blank run. It’s not unusual for the area in summer, but it’s still a bummer. If you’re desperate, the 25th morning is your only real shot for a clean, small wave. Otherwise, leave the board in the car and wait for a better forecast.
