The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for Jax Beach Pier over the next 16 days is a tough one. I’ve looked at the numbers, and there’s just nothing to get excited about. The whole window from July 17 through to August 1 is a flat, frustrating stretch. The water temp is sitting at 84°, which is about average for this time of year, but that’s the only thing that’s “normal.” The break itself is a beach/pier setup, very consistent usually, and it’s exposed, but the swell we’re getting is tiny, from the wrong direction, and super short-period. The optimum swell direction is supposed to be from the NNE, but we’re seeing ESE, SE, E, and even NE pulses that are barely a ripple. The combined energy readings are all in the weak range – the highest is 58 (that’s July 24 afternoon) but with a period of just 4 seconds, that’s just wind slop, not surf. Crowds are “often” here, but honestly, with no waves, the only thing crowded might be the beach chairs.
Let’s run through the days. Starting Friday July 17 afternoon: a tiny 1.0 ft from the ESE with a 8-second period, cross-shore wind, combined energy of 17 – that’s a “no.” Saturday July 18 morning: 0.7 ft, 8 seconds, a bit cleaner but still nothing. Saturday afternoon drops to 0.3 ft, 6 seconds. Sunday July 19: 0.3 ft again, then afternoon flat. Monday July 20: 0.7 ft morning, then flat. Tuesday July 21: 1 ft from ESE with 7 seconds – still poor. Wednesday July 22 morning: 1 ft, 7 seconds, with a gentle offshore wind – that’s the cleanest we’ll see, but the swell is tiny. Wednesday afternoon: 4 ft from SE with only 5 seconds – that’s short-period junk, combined energy 53, but still poor surf conditions. Thursday July 23: flat both sessions. Friday July 24 morning: 1 ft, 8 seconds, then afternoon 4 ft from SE with 4 seconds – that’s the biggest of the whole run, but with a period that short, it’s just bumpy whitewater. Combined energy 58, but still “poor surf conditions.” The rest of the month into early August continues the same story: tiny swells, short periods, some offshore winds but never enough oomph. The biggest swell after that is 2 ft on August 1 afternoon with a 6-second period – again, not worth wetting a wetsuit.
So what’s the best on offer? Honestly, there isn’t one. The closest to a “standout” would be Wednesday July 22 morning with 1 ft and a gentle offshore – that might give a few knee-high rides for a beginner, but it’s not something I’d paddle out for. The rest is just a flat spell. This break is very consistent normally, but the forecast is showing a blank run. Sometimes that happens – the ocean just shuts down. Don’t lose hope, forecasts can change, but for now, leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
