The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good hard look at what’s coming down the line for our local stretch.
Honestly, the next week and a half are a real struggle. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell with hardly any energy behind it. The combined energy figures are all under 100 (like 26, 24, 14) which tells you just how little push there is. You’re looking at ankle to knee-high slop for days on end. The first real hint of something semi-rideable doesn’t show up until Monday afternoon, August 24th, with a tiny 1ft ESE swell and glassy conditions, but even that’s just a “surfable but ordinary” situation with a combined energy of 42. It’s a long wait from now until then with pretty much nothing to get excited about.
The real standout – and I mean the only glimmer of hope in this whole 16-day window – is the morning of Tuesday, September 1st. Now that’s a long way off, so temper your expectations, but the models are hinting at something different. The combined energy jumps to 166, which is finally a moderate reading. That’s paired with a 3ft swell from the ESE at 11 seconds. The wind is forecast to be calm, coming from the WNW at just 3 mph, keeping it clean. Jax Beach Pier is the spot, but with that moderate energy and a peak period around 11 seconds, it’s a groundswell character. It might be a bit straight for the pier, but if the direction lines up, it could offer some fun, clean lines. For the rest of the week after that, the energy stays mediocre and the wind turns mostly onshore and messy.
Because the swell is so consistently small and weak, and the break is an exposed beach/pier setup, honestly, from August 20th through most of the first week, this looks more like a kite surfer’s window than a place for a paddle board. There will be plenty of days in that stretch with cross-shore winds and ankle-biters.
Stay patient, keep an eye on that first of September morning, and don't break your board on the sandbar trying to make something out of nothing.
