The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a long, hard look at what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks. Straight up, we’ve got a painful stretch ahead. For the first week, from Sunday the 23rd of August right through to the end of the month, it’s a whole lot of nothing. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.7ft to 1ft, and the wind, while light at times, just can’t make up for the lack of energy. The combined wave energy barely cracks 60 (like 61) for most of that period. It’s basically a flat spell, with a few glassy mornings that are only good for a longboard paddle if you’re desperate. There’s a big gap of about eight days where there’s nothing worth recommending.
Things start to show a tiny pulse of life around Monday the 31st of August. The morning sees a weak 2ft swell from the ESE with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 51. The wind is light from the SSE, keeping it clean. We’re into “surfable but very ordinary” territory here – tiny, weak, and not really worth getting excited about. The water temp at Jax Beach Pier is sitting at a warm 84°, which is about average for this time of year.
The standout moment of the entire forecast, and the only one I’d really mark on the calendar, is the morning of Sunday the 6th of September. The wind is glassy from the NNE, and we’ve got a clean 2ft swell from the east with a period of 10 seconds. The real kicker is the combined energy, which jumps up to 220 – that’s moderate wave energy, a huge step up from the dribble we’ve been seeing. The swell direction is right on the money for the exposed beach setup here. It’s still small, but it’s clean, and it’s the best offer we’ve got. Crowds are often a thing at the pier, so expect some company.
After that, Monday the 7th of September is a bit of a letdown. The morning offers a glassy 2ft from the east with a period of 10 seconds, but the energy drops right back to 54. It’s surfable, but the wind turns onshore and nasty in the afternoon. A very short-lived window.
Overall, it’s a grim run for the most part. The one bright spot is that Sunday morning on the 6th. It’s not a classic, but it’s the cleanest, most energetic wave we’re going to see. Don’t hold your breath for the rest.
Rusty.
