The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.

Well, I gotta be straight with you – this outlook is a bit of a bummer. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with very little to get excited about. The first real chance of a surf comes on Saturday the 18th of July, but it’s a sad start. Jax Beach Pier is seeing a weak 4 ft swell from the SE, but with a short period of just 4 seconds and a 25 km/h cross-off wind, it’s not going to offer much. The water’s a warm 84°, which is about normal for the time of year, but the energy is weak (65). Honestly, it’s poor.

From Sunday the 19th right through to Friday the 24th, it’s pretty much a write-off. We’ve got days with zero swell, and when there is a tiny pulse, the wind is messy. There’s a window on Wednesday morning, the 22nd, with a light offshore wind from the SSW, but the swell is only 1 ft – it’s just not enough to push a surfer around.

The first hint of something half-decent shows up on the morning of Saturday the 25th. The wind goes glassy from the NW, and we get a tiny 2 ft swell from the ESE with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is still low (53), but the glassy conditions will make it look pretty. It’s surfable, but just barely.

The best bet in this whole forecast is the morning of Thursday the 30th of July. We’ll see a 3 ft NE swell with a 6-second period, and importantly, a solid offshore wind from the WSW at 25 km/h. The energy is moderate (60), and the offshore wind will hold the waves up. It’s the only time in the whole 16 days you’d even think about paddling out. The swell direction is from the NE, which is a bit off the optimum NNE for the pier, but the clean conditions make it the standout.

After that, it fades back to tiny, weak swells and light winds through the start of August. The morning of Friday the 31st of July offers a glassy, calm session with a 3 ft ENE swell, but again, it’s just very ordinary.

So, to sum it up: we’ve got a big gap of no real surf from the 18th right through to the 24th. The only day that’s worth a look is the morning of Thursday the 30th when the offshore wind cleans up that small NE swell. It’s not a paddle-out for the history books, but it’s the best we’ve got.

Rusty.
