The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at your local surf prospects. Let's cut straight to it – we've got a pretty flat run of swell on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Jax Beach Pier. It's a tough outlook for anyone looking to get wet with a wave under their feet. There's a stretch from now all the way through to the end of August that's basically a write-off, with only tiny, weak slop. Then we start seeing a flicker of life in the early days of September, but it's nothing to get excited about.
Our best bet, and it's a relative term for sure, falls on the morning of Wednesday, the 2nd of September. For the morning session, we're looking at a very clean, glassy morning with next to no breeze. The swell is a modest 2 ft from the ESE with a period of 12 seconds. That long period will give the tiny waves a bit more shape and energy (combined energy is 82), but it's still going to be small. The offshore direction is for a NNE wind, so this little ESE swell isn't a perfect match, but the clean conditions make it the standout of a pretty ordinary forecast. You'll likely have the place to yourself, just don't expect any barrels.
A few other mornings offer a similar story of clean but tiny surf. The mornings of Saturday the 29th of August and Monday the 31st of August have clean conditions with a light breeze, but the swell is either too small or too short-period to do much with. The morning of Tuesday, the 1st of September, sees a 1 ft ESE swell with a very long 15-second period, but it's so small it's barely a ripple, and the combined energy is only 52.
Beyond that, any other surf is plagued by onshore winds or cross-shore chop, making for messy, bumpy conditions unsuitable for a decent paddle. For the whole period, the swell direction doesn't match up with the optimum for the pier, and the energy remains weak. It's the kind of stretch where you're better off checking the wind forecasts and hoping for a bigger swell to push through.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts.
Rusty.
