The Lowdown
Hey there, Rusty here with the full rundown for the local waters.
First things first, prepare for a dry spell. There’s no surf worth paddling out for until the 24th of August, and even then it’s pretty weak. The first week is mostly flat or gutless, so don’t get your hopes up too early.
Monday, August 24th afternoon is the first time the waves are rideable. Over at Jax Beach Pier, you’ll see a tiny 2ft wave from the SE with a short 5-second period. The combined energy is a weak 40, so it’s mostly a lot of work for nothing. Morning windows are cleaner, but the afternoon is just ordinary mushy stuff.
The next several days are basically the same story – small swells with afternoon sea breeze ruining the shape. Some mornings are glassy or offshore, but with wave heights barely hitting 3ft and energy under 100, you’re not missin’ much.
Sunday, August 31st morning starts to show some life. A glassy, clean morning with 2ft from the ESE and a 7-second period. The energy is still low at 77, but it’s the cleanest we’ve seen. It’s surfable, but nothin’ special.
Now here’s the bright spot. Tuesday morning, September 1st is the one to chase. You’ll find dead calm, glassy conditions at Jax Beach Pier. A nice groundswell at 1ft from the ESE with a long 16-second period rolls in. The combined energy jumps to 120 (moderate). That long period will bring deeper, more powerful waves. For a beach and pier setup, it can get a bit straight, but with zero wind and a decent pulse, this is your best bet. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so it’ll feel about right.
Wednesday and Thursday mornings (Sept 2nd and 3rd) still offer some clean, light-wind sessions with the energy hanging around, but the swell fades again. Everything after that falls away into tiny, junky conditions through the end of the forecast.
Bottom line: circle Tuesday, September 1st on the calendar for the dawn session. The rest is pretty flat. It’s a common slow patch for this area, but forecasts can always shift. Stay ready.
Rusty.
