The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.

First off, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is a real struggle for any kind of decent surf. We’re looking at a long, long stretch of small, weak waves and mostly onshore or cross-shore winds. The water temp is sitting at a warm 85°F, which is about 1°F above the norm for this time of year – feels like bathwater, but you’ll be sweating it out in a full wetsuit.

The only real spot on the menu is Jax Beach Pier, a beach/pier setup that’s about as consistent as it gets, but even that can’t save us here. The swell is tiny, mostly from the ESE, and the combined energy of all swells directed here is weak, barely cracking 100 (24-84) for most of the period. There’s simply no punch.

Let’s walk through it. Tuesday afternoon, August 18th, you’ve got a measly 1 ft of swell from the ESE with a cross-shore wind – poor conditions. The next morning, Wednesday the 19th, offers a slight improvement with a clean 2 ft from the ESE and a light cross-offshore breeze, but it’s just “surfable waves but very ordinary.” That’s as good as it gets early on. Thursday the 20th morning is glassy but only 1 ft. The following days are a carbon copy: tiny surf, 0.7 ft to 1 ft, with the occasional offshore wind but no real wave size. Friday the 21st has a clean 1 ft with a light offshore, but again, it’s micropoo.

The second week doesn’t get any better. Sunday the 23rd shows a 0.7 ft swell with a 13-second period from the E, but it’s still tiny. The period is long, but for a beach break like Jax Beach Pier, long-period groundswells on 0.7 ft are just long waits between ankle-biters. The wind is offshore, but it’s wasted. The closest we get to a pulse is on Tuesday afternoon, August 25th, when the swell bumps to 4 ft from the SE, but with a 5-second period and a moderate cross-shore, it’s just a messy, choppy ankle-to-knee high dribble. Not worth a paddle.

The only bright spot, and I mean the *only* one, is on Friday, August 28th, in the afternoon. The swell is 2 ft from the ESE, but the combined energy finally jumps to a moderate 191 – still small, but that’s the most energy we’ll see. The period is 12 seconds, which is a solid groundswell, but the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the SE. It’s not clean, but it’s the most potential in the whole forecast. For a beach break, the long period will make it a bit fat and straight, but if you’re desperate, you might find a couple of workable ones.

Honestly, this is a dry spell. The breaks are very consistent, but the swell is just not there. For a beginner, anything over 2 ft is a challenge, but it’s all so small and weak that even a foamie would be boring. The wind is mostly cross-shore or onshore, so the surface is never truly clean for long. With the tiny swell and poor quality, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on most days.

Hang in there, crew. It tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now, I’d wax the longboard for a flat day paddle or just wait for the next system.

Rusty, signing off.
