The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s doing in our neck of the woods.
To be straight with you, this is a tough stretch. The entire 16-day window is a flat, frustrating run for Jax Beach Pier. The first week goes by with hardly a ripple—tiny, short-period ankle-biters that barely register. The combined swell energy is almost always below 100, which is a dead giveaway. You’ll see mornings with glassy, offshore conditions, but with swell heights stuck between 0.7 ft and 1 ft, it’s nothing you can actually ride. The afternoons are mostly cross-shore and messy, with a few moderate breezes kicking up chop. Honestly, for the first week, it’s not even worth dragging a board down.
There is a flicker of life right at the very end of the first week and into the start of September. On the morning of Monday the 31st of August, we get 2 ft of ESE swell with a period of 8 seconds, light offshore airs, and the combined energy climbs to 64. It’s still small and ordinary, but at least you might find a groveler’s wave if you’re desperate. Then on Tuesday the 1st of September, the morning goes glassy with 2 ft of E swell at a long 15-second period. That’s a groundswell, so the energy is there (152 combined energy), but a period that long on a beach/pier setup can make things walled up and straight. Still, with zero wind, it’s the cleanest it’ll get. Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September also have glassy mornings and a little more size—2 ft to 3 ft—again with longer periods. The combined energy hits the 150-230 range, meaning there’s actually some moderate energy in the water, but it’s still a far cry from good surf.
To be clear, there is no standout session in this outlook. Nothing worth calling “best on offer.” The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there. The break is very consistent, but with weather patterns that just aren’t delivering. For a place that’s normally reliable, this is a quiet spell. If you’re a kite surfer, the stronger afternoon breezes and onshore winds might give you something to play with, especially towards the 6th and 7th of September when the wind swings ENE and picks up, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a long wait.
Hang in there. It tends not to stay this poor for long.
