The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you—looking at the next 16 days for Jax Beach Pier, it’s a real flat spell. We’re talking a long stretch of barely a ripple to start, so don’t rush to wax up just yet.
There’s nothing worth paddling out for from Tuesday 14 July right through until Wednesday 22 July. The waves are tiny—1ft to 1ft at best—with weak energy (27 to 34 on the combined scale), short period swells around 8 seconds, and winds that are mostly cross-off or glassy but the swell just isn’t there. It’s poor surf, plain and simple. A few afternoons go glassy, like Wednesday 15 July afternoon with a glassy 1ft from ENE, but it’s still too small to bother with.
The first real glimmer shows up on Wednesday 22 July afternoon. We get a pulse of 4ft from the SE, but the period is a shocking 4 seconds—basically wind slop. The energy is moderate (51), but it’s surfable in a very ordinary way. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but don’t expect any shape. The water temp is about average for July, so no wetsuit drama.
Thursday 23 July is a total write-off, flat again. Friday 24 July morning brings a tiny 1ft from ESE with a gentle offshore wind (SW at 10 mph), and it’s clean, but it’s still just a knee-high dribble. The afternoon gets blown out by a risk of thunderstorms and gusty S winds.
Saturday 25 July morning is similar—1ft, offshore, clean, but weak. The afternoon picks up a bit to 3ft from SE, but the period is only 5 seconds and the wind is cross-off. Energy is still weak (72), and it’s poor surf.
Sunday 26 July afternoon sees a jump in energy to 151 (moderate) with a 3ft ESE swell, but the period is still a short 8 seconds and the wind is cross-shore from the SE at 16 mph, creating a cross-chop. Not great for a beach break like Jax Beach Pier—the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing that day.
The best window in the whole outlook is Monday 27 July. The morning has 2ft from E at 9 seconds with a gentle cross-off breeze, and the afternoon goes glassy with a 3ft E swell and 9-second period. The energy is 76 and 99—still weak to moderate—but the glassy conditions will make it clean and fun for a beginner-friendly wave. The pier is very consistent, but expect crowds often. This is the standout, but it’s not a big swell.
After that, Tuesday 28 July and Wednesday 29 July are back to small, short-period waves with cross-shore winds. Overall, it’s a lean fortnight. The surf is mostly poor, and the few surfable days are only just okay. The spot is exposed to NNE swell, but the guidance shows the optimum comes from NNE, and we’re seeing swells from ESE and SE—so the direction is off. It’s a tough run, but forecasts can change.
Rusty.
