The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough stretch ahead for our shores. The whole 16-day window is a bust, no sugar-coating it. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with zero decent surf on the table.
Surfside Beach Octagone is the only spot in the mix, and it’s a tough one. The water is sitting at a warm 86°F, which is a touch above the norm for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s slightly interesting.
From Monday the 3rd of August all the way through to Tuesday the 18th of August, it’s a flat, choppy mess. The swell is tiny, barely a ripple, hanging around 1ft to 3ft from the SE and SSE, with periods so short (mostly 4 to 6 seconds) there’s no push or shape. The wind is a constant problem – cross-on, onshore, or just plain messy. Even when it’s light, the swell is too weak to do anything with. The wave energy is pitiful, with the highest reading at a weak 83 (combined energy of all swells directed here) on the 13th of August, but that’s still paired with poor conditions.
There’s a moment on the 17th of August morning where the wind goes light and cross-shore, but the swell is only 2ft from the SE with a 6-second period – that’s a lake, not a surf.
Forget about it. The setup is so poor for paddling, with the onshore winds and tiny windswell, this would actually look more interesting for a kite surfer than anyone with a paddle. There’s just nothing to get excited about. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is a blank run through the whole period.
Rusty.
