Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got coming up for The Cove in Cape May.
Honestly, the next two weeks are a tough stretch for this point break. We're looking at a long, flat spell with nothing but poor conditions for the first week and a half. The water temperature is sitting at 73°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’ll feel nice on the skin even if you’re just splashing around.
The first glimmer of anything surfable doesn't pop up until Wednesday morning, July 8th. That morning we’ve got a small 3 ft swell out of the ESE with a short period of 7 seconds. The wind is a light offshore from the NNE at 9 mph, so the surface will be clean. The wave energy is pretty weak (70), so you’ll be working for those little rollers. It's not great, just "surfable." Crowds are likely here, so don’t expect to have it to yourself. The optimum direction for The Cove is SE, so this ESE swell is close but not perfect. If you’re desperate for a paddle, this Wednesday morning and the following calm afternoon are your only real windows in the first half of the month.
The real standout, if you can hold out, is the tail end of the forecast. On Friday afternoon, July 17th, we get another small bump. The swell is 3 ft from the SSE (not the ideal SE, but close) with a 7-second period. The wind goes offshore from the NE at 6 mph, which will keep it glassy and clean. The energy is still low (89), but after two weeks of nothing, this is the best we’re going to see. It’s a tiny wave, perfect for a longboard or a funboard, and with that offshore flow, it’ll be the pick of the bunch.
For the rest of the period, it’s mostly small, chopped-up, or onshore junk. The one time the swell tries to push a little higher—Tuesday, July 14th—the swell hits 5 ft with a 6-second period, but it’s all onshore with risk of thunderstorms and energy in the moderate range (150). That’s a messy, lumpy combo better left alone.
So, to sum it up: a long, flat start, a so-so window on Wednesday the 8th, and a slightly better one on Friday the 17th. The 17th is your best bet, but keep the expectations low—it’s a tiny wave with offshore wind.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the forecasts. They can change.
Rusty.
