The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – I’ve looked at this 16-day window for The Cove Cape May, and it’s a real tough one. We’re staring down the barrel of a long, flat spell with hardly anything worth paddling out for. The water is sitting at 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the air feels nice.
We start off with nothing. The first few days are a no-go. Saturday the 18th is a write-off with a weak, short-period 4ft S swell at 5 seconds getting hammered by a 22 mph S wind. Then we go through a long stretch of tiny, poor-quality surf. The wind switches around, but the swell just isn’t there. Honestly, the best you’ll find is a bit of a clean-up on Thursday the 23rd morning. There’s a tiny 3ft SSE swell with an 8-second period, and a clean offshore N wind at 12 mph. The combined energy is only 78, so it’s weak, but it’s the only time the report says “surfable waves.” It’s not a standout, but it’s the only option if you’re desperate for a paddle.
The real action, such as it is, doesn’t show up until the end of the month. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th see a bit of a bump. On Wednesday afternoon, we get a 5ft ENE swell, but it’s a short 7-second period and the wind is onshore, so it’s a messy, sloppy mess. The combined energy hits 263, which is a solid moderate energy, but with that wind, it’s just a churn. Thursday the 30th morning is the pick of the second week. The swell drops to 3ft from the E, period still 7 seconds, but we get a clean cross-offshore NW wind at 9 mph. The combined energy reads 107. It’s still only “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but with clean wind, it’s the best shot for a clean, if small, wave.
The rest of the run into August is just tiny, weak surf with poor wind. There’s no standout session here.
Rusty.
