The Lowdown
Right folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cooking for The Cove Cape May over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, straight up, I gotta be honest with you. This is a grim stretch. We're looking at a solid twelve days of zip, zero, nada. From Thursday the 20th of August all the way through to Tuesday the 1st of September, the surf is just a total write-off. Tiny, weak, and messy. The water temp is sitting around 75.7°F with a +1.8°F anomaly, so it's a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but that's about the only thing going for it.
The first real flicker of hope doesn't pop up until Wednesday the 2nd of September. We get a pulse of easterly swell, pushing 4.3ft, but it's a short period windswell around 7 seconds and the wind is onshore. The wave energy is moderate (199), but it's gonna be choppy and ugly. Honestly, with that wind, the setup might be more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle folk.
Thursday the 3rd of September is where things get interesting. That's the standout in this whole outlook. The swell bumps up to 5.6ft from the east, with a period of 9 seconds, and the energy jumps up to a strong 602. That's a proper amount of juice. But the real magic is the wind. It swings around to the NNW, giving us a clean, cross-offshore breeze. The waves are going to be chest to head-high and clean. This is an intermediate-friendly size, but it's got enough punch. It's a point break that's fairly consistent, so expect some decent lines. The optimum swell direction is SE, so we're a bit off that, but the energy is there, and the wind makes it the best call by a country mile. The main downside? It's a point break and it's often crowded, so you’ll have company.
Friday the 4th of September looks like a hangover from the day before. The swell drops back to 3.3ft and the wind goes onshore again, turning it back to slop. So don't sleep on Thursday morning.
To wrap it up, the first week and a half is a complete write-off. The real window is Thursday the 3rd of September. It's not a perfect forecast, but with that northwesterly wind and decent sized swell, it's the only game in town. Set the alarm for that one.
