Alright, let me tell you straight, it's been a rough stretch here. Right now, through the first week and into the second, there's just nothing doing. The Cove Cape May is seeing days and days of tiny, weak surf, with the combined energy barely getting into double digits – a measly 14 on the Monday morning, barely a ripple. The water’s warm though, 77.4°, which is a solid 6.3° above normal for this time of year, so it’s nice for a swim, just not for a surf.
We’ve got a long gap with no real surf on offer. The wind is mostly cross-off or clean, but with swell heights stuck between 0.7 ft and 2.0 ft and short, weak periods, it's just flat. That fresh 0.7 ft to 1.0 ft stuff from the ESE with a period of 9 to 10 seconds doesn't have the beans to stand up. Even when Friday afternoon rolls around on the 10th of July, we get 2.0 ft from the S at 6 seconds, 37 combined energy – it's poor.
Then on Monday the 13th of July, things finally change. The swell jumps to 4.9 ft from the ESE, with a period of 7 seconds. That’s a moderate wave energy of 235 (combined energy), but the break is a point, and with that short period, it's not going to hold up well. The wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off from the ENE, so the face might be clean, but the whole setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The quality just isn't there.
We run through the rest of the second week with more of the same – small swell, poor conditions. There’s a glimpse of something on the 19th of July, a Sunday morning, with 1.6 ft from the SSE and a glassy wind, but that’s gone by the afternoon. The Tuesday of the 21st brings a gusty 28 mph cross-off wind from the N, but again, only 2.0 ft of swell.
The whole 16-day window is a write-off for quality surf at The Cove. There are no standouts. The conditions are consistently poor, and the forecasts can change, but for now, this is a dry spell you’d rather wait out than try to paddle into. Nothing to get excited about here.
