Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what The Cove Cape May has cookin’ for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you—this is a tough stretch. We’re lookin’ at a long, flat spell. From now all the way through to the morning of Monday the 21st of July, the surf is just gonna be one big dud. Day after day of knee-high slop and junk wind. There’s a moment or two where it gets glassy, like Friday afternoon the 10th, but the swell is a measly 2 ft from the south with a short 7-second period—barely enough to wobble a floatie. The combined energy is only 86 (weak), so don’t expect any push. A few mornings clean up with a light offshore, but without any real swell underneath it’s just a flat, pretty-looking ocean.
The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild. Crowds can be an issue here even when it’s small, so if you’re paddling out for those tiny leftovers, expect company.
Now, after that long dry spell, we finally get a little pulse on Tuesday the 21st. Monday morning brings a bit of a bump: 3 ft from the east, period hanging at 7 seconds—still short-period windswell—but the combined energy jumps to 174 (moderate). That’s the best number we see in the whole run, and it’s clean with a cross-off wind from the east at 15 mph. That morning is your best bet of the entire outlook. It ain’t gonna win any awards, but it’s surfable and tidy. Probably more for the intermediate crew; the swell isn’t big enough to get scary.
After that, it drops back down fast. Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning are small again, with poor energy.
So here’s the bottom line: one morning—Monday the 21st of July—is the only real standout in a 16-day window full of flatness. For a spot like The Cove that’s fairly consistent, this is a rough stretch. But hey, forecasts change, and it never stays flat forever.
Rusty.
