Imperial Units
Alright, let's talk about The Cove Cape May in feet and miles per hour. It's not a pretty picture, folks.
Look, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. For the first ten days or so, you're better off washing your car. The surf is basically non-existent, and the few times a wave tries to pop up, the wind trashes it. It's a tough stretch of the summer, but it's not unheard of around here. The water is sitting at 75°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't freeze waiting for a set.
The absolute best we've got lands on the 23rd of July, Thursday afternoon. It's not a day you'd write home about, but it's the only thing worth a look. We're expecting a small 4ft swell from the East, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it'll be a bit weak and won't have much punch. The big positive is the wind – it's dead glassy. That means the ocean's surface will be smooth as butter, even if the waves are small. The combined energy is moderate at 109, so there's enough push to get you moving. It's a point break that's fairly consistent, so you might find a few fun little rides on a longboard. Expect some company, as it's often crowded.
The only other time to even consider is the 25th of July, Saturday morning. We've got a 4ft swell from the SSE with a 7-second period, and the wind is light and cross-off from the WNW, keeping things clean. The energy is moderate again at 114. It's a second-rate option compared to the Thursday glass-off, but it's something.
That's the sad truth of it. The rest of the two weeks is either flat, blown out, or just plain ugly. Don't get your hopes up, but as always, the forecast can change. For now, I'd find another hobby.
Rusty.
