The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Look, I’m gonna level with you – this forecast for The Cove Cape May is a long, flat stretch. The first couple of weeks are mostly a write-off, with barely a ripple worth paddling for. You’re looking at a solid 12-day gap before anything even gets close to rideable, and even then it’s just barely surfable. The water temp is sitting at 74°, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real flicker of hope doesn’t show up until Sunday, July 26. On the Sunday morning, we’ve got a clean 3 ft swell from the south, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 62 – that’s weak. The wind is cross-off from the NW at 12 mph, which will keep it clean. It’s small, weak, and short-period, but at least it’s not chopped to bits. The afternoon sees the same 3 ft from the SSE, period up to 8 seconds, a bit more energy (79) and still clean with a gentle cross-off breeze. The break is a point, so it might hold a little shape, but it’s still only for the desperate. Crowds are often an issue here, so don’t expect to be alone. The optimum swell direction is SE, and this is coming from the SSE, so it’s not quite lining up perfectly.
After that, the rest of the outlook fades back into tiny, weak surf. The 27th and 28th offer nothing of note, and the final days of the month – 29th and 30th July – are clean but tiny, with 1 ft to 2 ft swells and energy barely cracking 30. It’s all weak, short-period stuff, and even with clean cross-off winds, you’d be lucky to get a ride.
So, the standout – and I use that word loosely – is Sunday, July 26. It’s the only day where the numbers even hint at a wave. 3 ft, clean, cross-off wind, but it’s weak and short-period, so don’t expect much power. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window. Otherwise, it’s a long, flat run.
Rusty.
