The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you—this 16-day window for The Cove Cape May is a bit of a tough one. The first solid stretch of surfable conditions doesn’t really kick in until late in the run, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. We’ve got a long gap of tiny, sloppy waves with poor quality from today through to the end of the third week of July. The swell is small, mostly under 3 ft, with short periods and cross-onshore winds that chop everything up. The first few days are a write-off, with no real energy to speak of.
The first real hint of something happening comes on Monday, July 27th, in the morning. The Cove Cape May, a point break, sees a weak 3 ft swell from the SSW, with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 75, and while the wind is a light cross-offshore, keeping things clean, the waves are just surfable but very ordinary. It’s not a standout, but it’s the first taste of anything rideable.
Then on Tuesday, July 28th, the morning session offers a similar story. The swell drops a touch to 2 ft from the SSE, with an 8-second period, and the combined energy is still 77. The wind is offshore from the N at 6 mph, so the faces will be clean, and the better period gives a little more shape. It’s still small, but for a guy who just wants to get wet, this is your best bet. Crowds are likely at this spot, so don’t expect a quiet one.
Remember, the water temperature is sitting at 74°F, which is about normal for this time of year in the area. No big anomaly to worry about.
Overall, the only real standouts are those two mornings—July 27th and 28th—with clean, offshore wind and just enough swell to push you around. The rest of the forecast is a desert of poor surf. Hold tight, and check back with me. The surf can turn around quicker than a sandbar shift.
Rusty.
