Table - best surf conditions forecast for Crystals over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Right then, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Crystals over the next few weeks. Straight up, it’s a slow start. We’re looking at a solid ten days or so of pretty ordinary, dribbly conditions with barely a wave worth paddling for. The swell energy is sitting in the weak range – we’re talking single and double-digit values mostly, like 7, 19, 48 (Combined swell energy: 7 to 67) – just not enough push to get excited about. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild going on there.
From Monday the 17th right through to Thursday the 27th of August, it’s a real flat spell. You’ll see the odd tiny knee-high lump with periods around 8-12 seconds, but it’s mostly blown out or just too weak. That morning on Thursday the 20th has a glassy window with 1.3ft from the SE, but honestly, it’s still poor. Not worth the wetsuit peel.
Things start to change a little around Friday the 28th of August. The morning shows some life with 4.3ft from the ENE, period around 5 seconds – short period wind swell. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNW, so it’ll be clean, but the wave quality is described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” (Combined swell energy: 171). It’s a moderate energy pulse but the short period means it won’t have much shape. Could be a bit of fun for an intermediate on a bigger board, but nothing to write home about.
Now, the true standout is Saturday the 29th of August. That is the session to aim for. We’ve got a solid 4.3ft swell wrapping in from the SE, with a 12-second period – that’s proper groundswell, good energy (Combined swell energy: 595). That’s a strong energy reading. The wind is light and cross-off from the NNW in the morning, swinging light cross-off from the SSW in the afternoon. It’s going to be clean, lined-up surf. For Crystals, which is fairly exposed to the NE, this SE direction is paired nicely with the optimum swell direction from the NE in the guidance. Should offer some decent peaks. The crowd factor is “sometimes” busy, so you might have a few out, but with this quality, it’s worth it. The afternoon holds up too with 4.3ft from the SE at 11 seconds (Combined swell energy: 435). This is the best on offer in the whole 16-day run.
Sunday the 30th still has some waist-high leftovers, around 3.9ft from the ESE at 9 seconds, but the quality drops back to just ordinary. Then from Monday the 31st into September, it fades right back out to small, weak surf again. So the window is narrow – aim for that Saturday the 29th.
Short Range ForecastLight rain (total 2mm), mostly falling on Sun night. Warm (max 29°C on Mon afternoon, min 23°C on Tue morning).
