The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at the crystal ball for Crystals.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks look pretty grim. We're staring down a long, dry spell with hardly any swell to speak of. The whole 16-day window is a bust, really. The only flicker of something even remotely surfable doesn't show up until Sunday the 23rd of August, and even then, it's a messy affair.
The pattern is weak, with the combined swell energy barely hitting triple digits (73) at its best, and most of the time it's stuck in the double digits. That's just not enough oomph to get anything decent breaking at Crystals. The water is about 79°, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year.
Let's walk through it. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are a write-off: small, choppy, onshore crap. The first real mention is Sunday the 23rd of August in the afternoon. We get a little 3ft bump from the south, but it's a short-period 5-second windswell, and while the wind is offshore (WSW at 12 mph), the overall vibe is "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." That's a stretch, honestly. It's a one out of ten day.
After that brief tease, it's back to tiny, weak slop for the rest of the month and into September. Swell heights barely register above 2ft, periods are short, and the winds are mostly cross or cross-offshore. There's a moment on Saturday the 29th of August afternoon with a gentle offshore wind (WNW at 9 mph) and a 2ft swell from the southeast, but with an 8-second period, it's just a dribbly little wave. The combined energy is a paltry 41.
From the 30th of August all the way through to the 5th of September, it's a complete desert. We're talking 0.3ft to 1ft waves with barely any energy (8 to 52). There are a few glassy mornings on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of September, but with a 1ft swell from the southeast and a 9-second period, you'd be spending more time floating than riding. The energy is just not there.
For a spot like Crystals, a blank run like this is pretty normal. It's a fairly exposed beach/jetty setup, but it needs a real push of swell and a decent period to come alive. This isn't that. Currently, the setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the few windier days, but for us wave hunters, there's nothing to recommend.
This is Rusty, signing off. Keep the board waxed and wait for the charts to change.
