The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've scanned the charts for the next couple of weeks, and I won't sugarcoat it – it's a pretty grim run for our local stretch. The only spot in the game is Crystals, and honestly, most of the time it's just not worth paddling out. We're staring down a long, dry spell with barely a ripple.
The water temp is sitting at 76°, feeling a touch warmer than the usual for this time of year, but that's about the only thing worth noting.
Right now, for the rest of July and into the first week of August, it's mostly flat. The swell energy is almost non-existent, with combined energy readings barely cracking the teens (7 to 17) – that's weaker than a whisper. A few days have that tiny 0.7ft to 0.7ft wind slop, but it's all cross-onshore or onshore, making it messy and unrideable. The only real window of clean conditions comes from Sunday the 19th morning with a moderate offshore breeze, but there's no swell to push it.
Then around Thursday the 23rd of July, we get a pulse of 6ft NE swell, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore, making it lumpy and horrible. The combined energy hits 253, but it's all wind-chop, not a clean wave. It's a setup that looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The best window of the whole outlook is actually Saturday the 25th of July morning. We get a 4ft ESE swell with a 9-second period, and the wind goes light offshore from the WSW at 3 mph. The combined energy is decent at 247, and it's got that clean, glassy look. For a moment there, it'll be surfable, but it's very ordinary conditions, and the cross-offshore breeze will be tricky. It's the only time I'd even consider it, and even then, keep your expectations low. After that, it's back to small, wind-affected junk through the end of the month.
So, there's your lot. A few days of almost nothing, then one brief, average window on the 25th. It's a tough beat, but the forecast can always change.
Rusty.
