The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for Crystals.
To be honest, the next two weeks are looking pretty ordinary. There’s nothing on the cards that’s going to get the heart racing. The water is sitting at 79°, which is a big 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – definitely feels like a warm bath out there.
The first real chance of anything surfable comes around Friday, August 28th. The morning session is the only one that’s close to being worth a paddle. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell sneaking in from the ESE, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak, only 68 in the gauge. But the wind is glassy, absolutely flat calm. That’s the only positive. It’s going to be clean, but you’ll be fighting for every little bump.
After that, it’s back to a long stretch of nothing. From Saturday the 29th right through to Tuesday, September 1st, it’s all poor surf conditions with tiny, weak swells and messy cross-onshore winds. The first glimmer of a proper swell appears on Wednesday, September 2nd. The morning sees a 2ft SE swell with a 12-second period, so there’s some long-period groundswell energy in there. The combined energy hits 139, which is moderate. The wind is cross-offshore and clean. It’s still small, but that’s the best of a bad bunch. The afternoon turns a bit lumpy with a cross-on breeze.
Thursday, September 3rd, sees a pulse of 4ft swell, but it’s a short-period 6-second windswell. The wind is onshore, and the energy is moderate at 139 again. It’s going to be messy and unappealing for a paddle. For kite surfing, the setup might be more interesting than for a surfboard.
Friday, September 4th, offers a 3ft swell from the east, but it’s still short period and mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The energy is moderate (128 in the morning). Not great.
After that, the swell fades again into the weekend. The whole second week is just a series of small, weak, short-period swells with onshore or cross-onshore winds. Nothing to get excited about.
So, the best bet in the whole 16-day window is the morning of Wednesday, September 2nd. The swell is small at 2ft from the SE, but the 12-second period gives it some shape, and the clean cross-offshore wind will make it look its best. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but it’s the only window where the conditions line up. The rest of the time, you’re better off waiting for the next forecast.
Rusty.
