The Lowdown
Hey, it’s Rusty. Let’s talk about Crystals. It’s a quiet start, with a long dry spell before we see any real juice.
The water’s running a touch warmer than usual for the season, about 77°F, which is a nice little comfort.
From Saturday the 18th right through to Sunday the 26th of July, it’s basically flat or tiny. The combined energy is in the single digits or low double digits – a whisper. A small window on the afternoon of the 26th shows a 1-foot swell from the SE, 7-second period, with light cross-offshore wind, and it’s clean, but the energy is weak (86). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
The real action starts Monday the 28th of July. Combined energy jumps to 358, and by Tuesday the 29th we’ve got 7ft of ENE swell with a 7-second period. The energy is moderate to strong (437). Wednesday afternoon the 29th is the pick – cross-offshore wind (SSW at 15 km/h), clean conditions. Thursday morning the 30th is also a gem: glassy, 6ft of ENE swell, and calm winds. Clean and punchy.
Friday morning the 31st offers another glassy session with 6ft of ENE swell (373 energy), but it’s a short window before the wind turns onshore. After that, the swell fades and the wind gets messy.
If you’re planning a session, target Wednesday 29th July afternoon and Thursday 30th July morning. The 6ft to 7ft range is a bit much for learners, but it’s solid for the experienced crew. The 7-second period makes it a wind swell, so it’ll be a bit sectiony, but with clean offshore flow, it’ll be rideable and fun.
Don’t burn yourself out on the tiny days.
Rusty.
