The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let me tell you straight up: it’s a quiet stretch at Crystals. We’ve got a long, long wait ahead.
Right now, through the middle of July, it’s basically flat or dribbly. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 76°, which is nice for a paddle, but there’s just no energy. From Monday the 13th all the way through Sunday the 19th, it’s a write-off – tiny waves, mostly under 2 ft, and most of the time it’s clean but completely gutless. The combined energy is barely a whisper, with values like 40 or less. You’re looking at a solid week of nothing worth suiting up for.
Then we get a bit of a pulse around the 20th and 21st. Monday the 20th sees a jump in swell – 6 ft to 8 ft from the NE, but the period is a short, weak 6 to 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 245 and then 480, which is moderate, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and messy. These waves are too short-period and blown out for any real fun. Tuesday the 21st stays similar, with 5 ft to 6 ft from the ENE, but again, onshore wind and a short period mean poor quality. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
The rest of the run into late July is just as grim. The swell drops right back down, and the winds stay unfavourable. There’s a brief moment on Thursday the 23rd afternoon where the wind swings offshore and we get a little 3 ft wave, but it’s weak and the period is only 5 seconds – surfable but very ordinary, as the notes say. That’s the best the whole 16 days has to offer, and it’s not saying much.
Forget about any standout sessions here. The whole period is a bust. The spot is inconsistent at the best of times, and this forecast reflects that. It’s a blank run, plain and simple.
Rusty.
