The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s cut to the chase – this 16-day outlook is a dry spell. We’re looking at a long wait for anything rideable.
The first real surf doesn't show up until the 21st of July. Before that, it’s a solid week of flat, tiny waves. The only break we’ve got is Crystals, and it’s going to be a test of patience. The water is 76°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least the waiting won't be too cold.
Let’s break it down. The first half is a total write-off. We’re dealing with knee-high, gutless junk. There’s a moment on the afternoon of the 18th of July where the swell bumps to 3ft, but it’s a short-period, sloppy SSE windswell with a period of only 4 seconds and a combined energy of just 29. That’s weak. Add a risk of thunderstorms and a cross-shore wind, and it’s a complete mess. No go.
The only real standout is the 21st of July (Tuesday). The morning sees a 3ft swell from the south, with a short period of 5 seconds and combined energy of 48. It’s not big, but it's the biggest we'll see. The wind is offshore from the WNW at 9 mph, keeping it clean. The break is a beach and jetty setup, fairly exposed. It’s manageable for an intermediate, but it’s nothing special.
After the 21st, it’s back to tiny stuff. The 25th of July (Saturday) afternoon shows a bit of hope with a 3ft swell from the SE and a moderate offshore wind from the WNW at 16 mph, giving a combined energy of 69. The period is still short at 7 seconds, so it won’t have any punch. The 28th of July (Tuesday) morning has a clean 1ft swell with offshore wind, but it’s tiny.
Bottom line: This is a grim 16 days. The only day that even vaguely resembles a surf is the 21st of July. For the rest of it, you’re better off finding something else to do. The combined energy levels are all in the low double digits or lower, telling you the ocean is just asleep. This kind of blank run is normal for the area when the swell windows don't line up.
Rusty out.
