The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board, let’s talk about the next stretch at Crystals. To be honest, it’s looking pretty bleak for a solid surf. We’ve got a long run of small, poor quality waves ahead, with only a tiny window of anything resembling a rideable wave. Hang tight, because the good stuff is a long way off.
Right off the bat, the water’s a warm 78°, which is a couple degrees above normal for this time of year. That’s a bit of a treat, but it won’t save the surf.
We start with nothing Monday afternoon – just a measly 1ft of slop with the wind chopping it up. Tuesday and Wednesday are just as bad, with tiny waves and poor conditions. There’s a slight bump on Wednesday morning to 2ft, but the energy is weak (61) and it’s just not doing anything. It’s going to feel like a week of staring at a lake.
Thursday and Friday stay flat, but there’s a change on Friday afternoon. The swell kicks up to 4ft from the NE, but it’s coming with a short 5 second period and a cross-onshore wind. The wave energy is moderate (123), but it’s going to be choppy and messy. Not good for paddling, maybe more interesting for the kite crew.
The weekend is more of the same – small, weak, and onshore. There’s a moment of glass on Sunday afternoon, but there’s only 0.7ft of swell. Talk about a tease. We do get some cleaner conditions with more consistent long-period swell from the SE early next week, on the 24th and 25th, but the size is still around 1ft. It’s clean but completely lacking any punch.
The real glimmer of hope comes mid-week, on Wednesday the 26th. The afternoon sees a bump in energy (143) with a 16 second period swell from the SE, but the size is only 2ft. Then on Thursday the 27th, we finally get something. The morning has a cross-off wind and 3ft from the SE with strong energy (219). The afternoon is even better: a true offshore wind from the WSW, with 3ft of clean surf and a solid energy of 184. It’s not big, but this is by far the best we’ve seen, and it’ll be the standout of the entire forecast. This is the one to watch.
After that, it fades back down into the small, messy stuff for the start of September, with fresh cross-onshore winds and no size. There’s a long period swell on the 26th that’s a bit too straight for the beachbreak, and that great Thursday is on a short period, so it’s a bit of a trade-off.
So mark your calendar for the 27th of August. It’s a long way out, so treat it as promising, not set in stone, but it’s the only real shot we’ve got.
