The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you – this 16-day stretch for Crystals (beach/jetty) is a real bummer. We’ve got a long, flat spell to kick things off, and it’s not until the last few days that we even see a pulse worth paddling out for. The water is sitting at 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick wetsuit if you’re waiting for something to happen.
The first week and a half is basically a write-off. From Tuesday, July 14, right through to Saturday, July 25, we’re looking at tiny, weak swell – mostly under 1ft – with combined wave energy readings that are well below 100 (most are in the teens or twenties). Wednesday morning the 15th offers a few clean 1ft lines with a gentle offshore from the west, but it’s so small it’s barely a ripple. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are glassy in the mornings but the swell is only 0.3ft. There’s just nothing to work with.
Then things start to nudge up. On Saturday, July 25, we get a bit of a lift. The afternoon brings 4ft from the ESE with a period of 7 seconds, and combined energy hits 126 – that’s moderate energy. The wind is cross-off from the SSW, so it’s clean. It’s not great, but it’s the first real sign of life. Sunday, July 26, is the best we’ve got. The morning has 3ft from the SE (8 seconds, energy 129), and the afternoon goes glassy with 4ft from the SE (8 seconds, energy 156). The waves are described as “surfable but very ordinary” – and honestly, for this spot, that’s it. The swell direction is from the SE, and the optimum for Crystals is NE, so it’s a bit off. But with glassy conditions and a little push, you might get a few grovelly ones. It’s not a standout, it’s just the best of a quiet run.
Monday, July 27, holds onto some 3ft to 2ft energy with glassy conditions in the morning, but it fades quickly. After that, it’s back to tiny stuff. The whole period is a long gap of no real surf, with only the last few days offering anything rideable. If you’re desperate, the 26th is your day. Otherwise, keep the board in the car and wait for the forecasts to change – it’s not usually this flat for this long.
