The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with ya – this is a tough stretch. The first surf worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Monday morning, the 3rd of August. Before that, we’re lookin’ at a solid two-week stretch of flat, weak, or messy conditions. From Sunday the 19th of July right through to Sunday the 2nd of August, it’s all poor surf. The combined energy is mostly in the weak to moderate range (values between 7 and 120), but the waves are tiny, choppy, or just plain ugly. There’s a few days with clean offshore winds, but with no swell to work with, it’s just a pretty picture with nothin’ to ride.
The one and only bright spot in this whole 16-day window lands on Monday morning, August 3rd at Crystals. This is where we finally get somethin’ to work with. The swell comes from the ENE at 4 ft, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s windswell, not groundswell – it’ll be a bit lumpy and won’t have that grunty push. The combined energy is a modest 99, which is right on the edge of weak. But here’s the kicker: the wind is glassy, light WSW at 3 mph. That’s a major positive. It’ll be clean, smooth, and there’s a chance for a few fun little runners. It’s a beach/jetty setup, so with that short period, it won’t be the best shape, but it’s the only game in town. The crowd is only “sometimes” an issue, so you might have it mostly to yourself. Given the long dry spell, this is your standout. It’s the only day with a score of 1 out of 10, which says it all – it’s not epic, but it’s surfable.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
So, if you’re desperate for a paddle, circle Monday morning, August 3rd at Crystals. Get there early for the glass. For the rest of the month, save your energy – it’s a long wait.
Rusty.
