Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Rusty here, lookin’ at Bay Head over the next couple weeks. It’s a beach/jetty setup that’s beginner-friendly and fairly consistent, but the first stretch is pretty bleak. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at about 72°, which is nice, but the surf just ain’t happening.
The first few days—from Saturday, July 4, through Thursday, July 9—are mostly flat or tiny, with messy winds and poor conditions. There’s a little bump on Tuesday morning, July 7, with 3ft from the east, but it’s weak and ordinary. Nothing to get excited about.
Then Friday, July 10, afternoon finally brings a shot of life. The swell picks up to 4ft from the south, with a period of 8 seconds—decent short-period energy. The wind goes offshore out of the west at 16 mph, and that’s a game changer. Clean, lined-up waves, moderate energy (268), and the setup is exposed to the south, which is close to the optimum southeast direction. This is the best window in the whole forecast. The crowd factor is “sometimes” so you might have company, but it’s worth it.
After that it fades again. The rest of the second week stays small, mostly cross-shore or onshore, with a few days of light offshore but hardly any size. The only other blip to watch is Saturday, July 18, morning. There’s a pulse of 5ft from the south, period 8 seconds, and the wind is light cross-off from the southwest. The energy is strong (449) but the score is only marginal—tide or something else might mess it up. Still, if you’re desperate, it’s the biggest swell of the run, but for experts only since it’s over 5ft. Beginners should stay away.
Overall, the standout is clearly Friday afternoon, July 10. That’s your best bet. The rest of the month looks pretty quiet, but forecasts can change.
Rusty.
