The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Bay Head. It’s a flat and frustrating start, folks. We’ve got a long dry spell before anything worth paddling out for shows up.
The water is way warmer than usual – 78°F, which is about 6°F above the norm. That is very unusual for this time of year, so you can ditch the thick rubber.
From Saturday August 22 through the end of the month, it’s pretty grim. Swell is tiny, mostly under 2 to 2 feet, with short, weak intervals. The combined swell energy is barely registering, with the biggest day only hitting 155 on Friday afternoon the 28th. That’s still weak energy. Even with a 3-foot south swell, the conditions are messy with cross and onshore winds. You’ll see some glassy or offshore moments, but with no swell, it’s just a flat, clean lake.
Your only real chance comes on Wednesday September 2. Morning brings a clean 2-foot swell from the ESE with a 12-second period and a light offshore breeze from the west at 6 mph. Combined energy is 163 (moderate energy). The afternoon goes dead glassy with no wind and the same 2-foot, 11-second groundswell. That’s the standout window. The longer period means better shape and easier paddling between sets, but at a beach/jetty break like Bay Head, it might wall up a bit straight. Grab a longboard or a fish.
After that, Thursday and Friday the 3rd and 4th push the swell to 3 feet, but the wind goes onshore and choppy, so don’t bother. The second week stays small and sloppy with onshore winds, though Sunday afternoon the 6th sees a bump in energy to 110 (moderate), but it’s still onshore.
Mark Wednesday September 2 as the only real session. For the rest, it’s a waiting game. This kind of flat run isn’t unusual for the area in a quiet spell, but things can turn around quick.
Rusty.
