The Lowdown
Alright, I’m Rusty, and here’s the deal for Bay Head.
For the first week or so, it’s a desert. From Wednesday the 15th all the way to the morning of Monday the 21st, the surf is tiny and junk. We’re talking swell around 1ft to 1ft, short periods under 8 seconds, and combined energy down in the weak range. Wind is mostly cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out.
The first real chance comes on the morning of Monday the 21st. The wind turns offshore from the west, cleaning things up, with a 3ft SSE swell and a 7-second period. The combined energy hits moderate (109). It’s not a classic, but it’s clean and surfable, and the afternoon is similar with a bit more period (8 seconds) and energy (138). That’s your best bet for the early part of the outlook.
We get a few more rough days after that, but the big one is shaping up for Sunday the 26th. That afternoon is looking glassy – zero wind – with a 5ft SSE swell, 7-second period, and strong energy of 315. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” That’s the standout. The whole day on the 26th looks good, with a clean morning and that glassy afternoon. The Saturday before (25th) also has a 5ft E swell with light cross-offshore wind, but it’s not as special.
Bay Head is a beach/jetty break, so it’s good for beginners on smaller days, but that 5ft swell will be pushing it for learners. The swell direction is mostly SSE and SE, not the ideal SE, but it’ll still work. Water temp is about normal for this time of year.
So, ride out the flat spell, hit Monday the 21st for a clean but average wave, and circle Sunday the 26th on your calendar – that’s the one.
Rusty.
