Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down Bay Head over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window, and from Thursday, July 2nd all the way through Friday, July 17th, every single session is tagged as “poor surf conditions”. That’s fourteen days with no rideable surf.
The biggest problem is tiny, weak swell. The largest wave height we see is 5ft on the morning of Wednesday, July 8th, but that comes with a cross-onshore wind and choppy water. The wave energy that morning hits 187 (moderate), but the quality is garbage. That afternoon, energy drops to 149. Nothing cleans up.
Water temp is about 71° when the period starts, a touch warmer than average for the time of year. Not that it helps.
There are a few moments of glass or offshore wind – Friday July 3rd morning is glassy, Saturday July 4th morning has offshore wind, and July 14th morning is glassy again. But the swell heights are tiny – 0.7ft to 2ft. You could be out on a log and still not catch anything. Swell periods are short, mostly 4 to 9 seconds, so no grunt.
Even Thursday, July 16th morning has a clean offshore wind from the WSW at 9 mph, but the swell is only 2ft. Not enough to get excited about.
For beginners, there’s nothing. For experts, even less. The entire period is a bust. If you’re into kiting, maybe the bigger, windier afternoon of July 8th (5ft, cross-onshore) could be something, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a solid no. A two-week stretch of flat, messy, and small is tough, but it happens here sometimes. Forecasts can turn around, but right now, save your energy.
Rusty.
