Table - best surf conditions forecast for Bay Head over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got the goods on Bay Head for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you—this stretch is looking pretty grim for a while. The water’s sitting at around 72° right now, which is about average for this time of year.
We kick off Saturday, July 11th with barely a bump—0.7 ft of weak, short-period swell from the ESE, and an onshore breeze from the east at 12 mph. Not worth paddling out. That sets the tone. Sunday through the following Saturday is a total write-off. We’re looking at wave heights mostly under 3 ft, short periods, and a mix of onshore and cross-shore winds. There’s a brief moment Wednesday morning, July 15th, with a gentle offshore breeze from the WSW, but the swell is only 1 ft from the SE, so that’s a flat, clean morning, not a surf. The combined wave energy stays in the weak two-digit range (13 to 87), just sad numbers.
Even when we get a little bump of 4 ft on Wednesday, July 22nd, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the period is still under 9 seconds. The energy climbs into the moderate zone (169) but the conditions are either onshore or choppy. Thursday the 23rd sees 4 ft from the SSE with a 9-second period, and energy hitting 233, but again onshore winds from the ESE at 12 mph kill it. That afternoon the swell jumps to 6 ft from the south, period drops to 6 seconds—that’s just a messy, short-period windswell, and the energy is 248. The 24th and 25th bring the biggest number, 6 ft on Friday the 24th morning with a 8-second south swell and a fresh onshore breeze at 22 mph—combined energy of 541, but it’s all windblown slop. That Saturday, the 25th, we get 5 ft from the south with a cross-shore wind at 12 mph and energy of 416, still not clean.
Finally, there’s a glimpse of hope Sunday morning, July 26th. The wind swings light SSW at 3 mph, nearly glassy, and we get 2 ft from the SE with a 7-second period. The combined energy is only 53, it’s weak, but it’s surfable and clean. The notes say “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s the one and only window, but it’s small and inconsistent. After that, the afternoon turns to a risk of thunderstorms and wind picks up again.
So, plain truth: no standout days here. The best on offer is that Sunday morning the 26th, and even then you’re looking at knee-high mush with a tiny bit of energy. The rest of the 16 days is a gap of almost two weeks of not worth your time. If you’re desperate for a paddle and a clean surface, maybe that Sunday morning. Otherwise, this is one of those stretches where you just wait.
Rusty.
