The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Bay Head’s looking at a long flat spell to kick things off. Nothing really happening until Monday the 20th. Before that, it’s pretty much tiny, weak, and messy – not worth paddling out for.
Come Monday morning the 20th, we finally get a pulse. It’s small, around 3 ft from the SSE, but the WSW wind is glassy – dead calm – so it’ll be clean as a whistle. The combined energy is only 122, so it’s moderate, nothing powerful. For a beginner-friendly beach/jetty break like this, that’s enough for a fun little session on a soft-top. Water temp is sitting at 73°, which is pretty average for the time of year, nothing unusual. That Monday afternoon sees a bit more size at 3 ft, but the wind swings a touch and it’s not as clean. Still, Monday morning is your standout.
After that, it’s back into the doldrums. Tuesday the 21st is messy with risk of t-storms and poor conditions. Wednesday the 22nd has some SSE swell but onshore wind chops it up. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are both onshore and small – not worth getting excited over. The weekend of the 26th-27th offers clean offshore flow from the WNW, but the swell drops back to 2-2 ft, with very low energy (44-56). It’s rideable if you’re desperate, but it’s not going to get the heart racing.
Through to the end of the month, the 28th through the 30th, we see some pulses of SSE swell up to 3 ft on the 30th, with moderate cross-shore wind. Energy on that Thursday afternoon hits 129, but the conditions are just okay – not glassy, not terrible. Nothing stands out as a must-surf session.
So bottom line: the only real highlight is Monday morning, July 20th – small, glassy, and clean. If you’re a beginner wanting to get wet without getting worked, that’s your window. The rest of the 16 days is flat, weak, or chopped up. Patience, pal.
