The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Bay Head has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you—it’s a pretty slow picture for the most part. We’re looking at a long stretch of weak, messy, small surf with hardly anything to get excited about until a brief window mid-week next week.
The first real chance of anything worthwhile pops up on Wednesday, July 22nd. The morning is where it’s at. We’ve got a south-southeast swell pushing in at 4ft, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy of all swells directed here is moderate at 221. The wind is offshore from the west-southwest at 12 mph, keeping things clean. This is your best bet in the whole outlook—a proper little window of clean, surfable waves. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.
After Wednesday morning, forget about it. The swell drops, the wind turns onshore or cross-shore, and the quality tanks. We’re back to flat, poor conditions for days on end. There’s a tiny flicker on Saturday, August 1st, in the afternoon. The swell is tiny at 3ft from the south with a short 5 second period, but the wind goes glassy, which is a beautiful thing. The combined energy is weak at 52. It’s surfable, but only just enough for a longboard in the glassy conditions. Don’t expect much.
Everything else is a write-off: small, weak, onshore chop, and poor surf conditions. There’s a significant gap from Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd, all the way through to that Saturday afternoon, August 1st, with nothing worth paddling out for. The rest of the outlook into early August is just more of the same—tiny, weak, and mostly messy.
So, to sum it up: mark your calendar for Wednesday morning, July 22nd. That’s the standout. Everything else is a gamble on a longboard in glassy conditions or a flat spell. Keep the board waxed and hope the forecasts change.
Rusty.
