The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one to write. We’re looking at a long stretch with no real standouts, so you might want to keep the board in the car for a bit.
Right now, the water at Bay Head is sitting at 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s the only good news.
The first solid chance of anything ridable shows up on the afternoon of Friday, August 28th. Even then, it’s just barely surfable. We’re talking a tiny 2 ft swell from the S with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is only 59 (weak). The wind is offshore from the WSW, so it’ll be clean, but the waves are ordinary. After that, there’s a long gap of nothing until the morning of Monday, August 31st. That morning gives a 2 ft SE swell with a 9-second period and combined energy of 99 (still weak). It’s clean with a light cross-off breeze, but again, very ordinary. The next half-decent window is the afternoon of Tuesday, September 1st, with a 2 ft ESE swell, 8-second period, and a bit more energy at 148 (moderate). The wind will be offshore from the W, so it’s clean, but these are still small, weak waves.
The bottom line is there’s no proper swell on the horizon. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, and the wave heights barely tickle 3 ft. For most of the 16 days, the surf is just poor. The few moments that are surfable are only worth a look if you’re desperate for a paddle. Honestly, with the mix of small, weak swells and often strong wind, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty, signing off.
