Table - best surf conditions forecast for Bay Head over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Bay Head. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a lean stretch. We’re looking at a solid two-week block with hardly anything worth paddling out for. The first proper chance doesn’t even show up until Monday the 20th of July, and even then it’s a struggle. Most days are flat or close to it, with tiny scraps of swell and messy wind. If you’re hanging out for a wave, you’ll be waiting a while.
The first real blip on the radar comes on Monday the 20th of July. Early morning we get a glassy start with a 4ft swell from the South, period around 5 seconds. Combined energy is still weak at 85, but hey, it’s the biggest we’ve seen in a while. The water temp sits at 71°F, which is about average for this time of year – nothing to write home about. That glassy wind early on is a solid positive, it’ll clean things right up. But the swell is short-period windswell, and it’s not got much grunt. By the afternoon, it pushes up to 6ft from the South with a 6-second period, and the energy jumps to 208 – that’s a moderate pulse. But the wind goes cross, and the storm risk clouds things over. That afternoon bump is going to be lumpy and messy. Honestly, this setup is borderline for a paddle, but if you’ve got a kite, the afternoon could actually look more interesting for you than a surfboard.
Tuesday the 21st of July keeps things rolling with similar vibes. Morning sees 4ft from the South, 6-second period, and light cross-offshore winds making it clean. Energy is 91, still on the weaker side. The afternoon brings 5ft from the SSE, same period, with a gentle cross-off breeze. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The swell direction (South and SSE) is not quite matching that SE optimum we’d want for a better break at Bay Head, so the shape will be so-so. Still, if you’re desperate, this is your best window of the whole forecast – but don’t expect anything special.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. From Wednesday the 22nd of July through to the end of the month, we’re looking at tiny waves – mostly under 2ft – and dirty cross or cross-off winds. A few glassy moments on the 17th and 18th of July but with swell barely reaching 0.7ft, it’s a lake. There’s a long dry gap from Tuesday afternoon the 21st right through to the end of the outlook. Nothing worth getting wet for.
So, to sum it up: the standout is the morning of Tuesday the 21st of July. It’s not pumping, but it’s the pick of a bad bunch. Clean conditions, a bit of waist-high swell from the South. If you’re keen, get out early. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game. Bay Head is a beach/jetty setup, fairly consistent, but this stretch is a real low point. Crowds are sometimes an issue here when it’s good – won’t be a problem this time. Hang in there.
Stay salty,
Rusty
