The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at The South Jetty over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week and a half is a tough stretch. From Tuesday the 18th of August all the way through to Sunday the 30th, it’s mostly tiny, weak, and messy. We’re looking at waves barely cracking 1 foot to 3 feet for most of that run, with a whole lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind. The combined swell energy is weak, hanging around 26 to 63 for the first week. It’s a real grind. You’ll see a few bright spots – like Friday morning the 21st, with glassy conditions and a tiny 1 foot easterly bump, but it’s just not enough to get excited about. That’s a solid 10 days of waiting.
Now, things start to shift around Sunday the 30th, but it’s still small and clean. The real story starts to build on Monday the 31st of August. Monday morning, we get a jump in the swell – 6 feet from the east, with a 7-second period. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so the wave face is clean. The combined energy bumps up to 254 (moderate), and the score says this is the good stuff. That’s your standout session for the whole period. Just be aware, by Monday afternoon the wind swings onshore and chops it up, so make the most of the morning.
After that, it’s back to smaller, wind-affected stuff for the first couple days of September. The 26th of August through to the 28th does see some longer-period energy (12 to 16 seconds) and combined energy getting into the 140s and 190s, but the wind is rubbish – cross-onshore or onshore – so it’s not worth paddling out for. The south jetty needs the wind to play nice, and it just doesn’t line up.
So, bottom line: you’ve got a long wait until the morning of Monday the 31st of August. That’s the one to circle. Get there early for clean, chest-high east swell with light offshore breezes. The rest of the window is either too small, too windy, or both.
Stay patient, and keep your eyes on that Monday morning window.
Rusty.
