The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – we’ve got a long stretch of nothing much on the cards for The South Jetty. For the first several days, it’s mostly tiny, weak, and messy. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at waves mostly under 3 feet, with a lot of onshore or cross-shore wind messing things up. The swell energy is low, mostly sitting in the 20s and 30s (weak combined energy), and the conditions are just poor for surfing. It’s not until Friday the 28th afternoon that we see a pulse of something real.
That Friday afternoon, the 28th of August, we get a jump to 4 ft of S swell, with a short period of 7 seconds. The wind swings offshore from the west at 9 mph, so the surface should be clean. The combined energy climbs to 236 (moderate energy) and it’s the only time in the whole run we get a "good surf conditions" call. That’s your best bet, but with that short period, it’ll be a bit fat and soft. Still, it’s the stand-out session.
After that, we slide back into small, weak stuff through the end of August and into September. There’s a bit more energy showing up around the 1st and 2nd of September, with combined energy hitting the 140s and 160s, but the waves are still under 3 ft and the wind is messy – mostly cross or cross-onshore. The morning of Wednesday the 2nd is worth a look: 2 ft of SE groundswell with a 12-second period, and a clean offshore breeze from the WSW at 9 mph. That’s a long-period groundswell, which at a beach/jetty setup can be a bit straight, but if you pick your peak, you could get a fun, clean wave.
The water temperature is 79° on the first day, and that’s a whopping 6° warmer than normal for the time of year – very unusual, so you can leave the wetsuit at home.
Overall, there’s no big swell to get excited about. The standout is Friday the 28th afternoon for the biggest clean surf, and Wednesday the 2nd September morning for a clean, longer-period option. The rest is a whole lot of small and choppy. Crowds are a possibility here at The South Jetty, so don’t expect to have it to yourself.
Rusty.
