Table - best surf conditions forecast for The South Jetty over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s heading our way for The South Jetty.
Well, to be straight with you, it’s a tough outlook for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a long dry spell with barely a ripple for the first week and a half. The ocean is flat, and the wind is all over the place. It’s not until the 22nd of July that we finally see a pulse of real swell, and even then, it’s a mixed bag.
The first real hope comes on the morning of Tuesday the 22nd of July. We’ve got a solid 6ft SSE swell rolling in with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a moderate wave energy (658), and the wind is out of the west at 9 mph, giving us a cross-off breeze that should keep the faces reasonably clean. This is your best bet of the whole period. It’s a decent size for an intermediate, but it’s not a beginner wave. The swell direction is SSE, which is a good match for this spot.
The next morning, Wednesday the 23rd of July, the swell is even bigger at 8ft from the SSE (period 8 seconds) and the energy is pumping hard (1182). That’s big, strong stuff. The wind is a cross-shore from the SSW, which is not ideal, but it’s not blowing straight onshore. That size is only for experienced surfers with a good set of nerves. The wave energy is strong, but the wind is a bit of a spoiler.
The water temperature is sitting at a balmy 76°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. It feels like a bathtub out there.
The first few days of the forecast are a total write-off. Tiny, weak swell with poor winds. From the 10th of July right through to the 21st of July, it’s basically a flat, choppy mess. The 20th of July has a bit of energy (105) but it comes with a 22 mph cross-shore wind that’s going to blow the ocean into a lumpy chaos. Better suited for a kite session than a paddle.
So, to sum it up: wait for the morning of the 22nd of July. That’s your standout window. The 23rd is for the brave. The rest is a long, flat wait.
Rusty.
