The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what The South Jetty has cooking for us over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, we're looking at a pretty quiet stretch to start, so patience is the name of the game.
The first real chance to get wet doesn't show up until Thursday, the 27th of August. Before that, it's pretty much a no-go. From now until that Thursday morning, we've got a solid stretch of tiny, weak waves with poor conditions. There's a window around Wednesday the 26th with a decent 16-second period groundswell, but the energy is weak at 72 and winds are messy, so it's a pass for paddle surfing—maybe one for the kite crew.
Things finally perk up on Thursday afternoon, August 27th, as a new S swell blends in. The South Jetty will see some 4ft waves from the south, with a moderate combined energy of 226. We've got light breeze and clean conditions from a cross-offshore wind. This is the best call in the first week, offering surfable waves, but it's still pretty ordinary. By Friday morning the 28th, it drops back down to 2ft and we lose the quality.
The standout window arrives early in the second week. On Monday, August 31st, the morning shows 4ft from the east with a clean offshore wind. Energy is moderate at 113, but the real highlight is Tuesday, September 1st. We get a solid 5ft of east swell with a combined energy hitting 332. The morning is glassy—absolutely glassy—with barely a breath of wind from the NNW. This is the best on offer for the whole outlook. The afternoon stays clean and surfable at 5ft. After that, conditions start to deteriorate again on Wednesday with a strong onshore flow.
So, to sum it up: don't bother paddling out until Thursday the 27th, and even then, keep your expectations low. The real one to circle is Tuesday, September 1st. That glassy morning with chest-to-head high east swell is your best bet by a long shot. The rest of the second week looks like it will drop off again.
Keep an eye on the forecasts, because on a quiet stretch like this, things can change.
Rusty.
