The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be a tough run of it at The South Jetty for the next couple of weeks.
Overall, the outlook is pretty flat. We’ve got a stretch of small, poor-quality surf stretching for days on end. The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 77°F.
The week kicks off with nothing worth paddling out for on Friday the 17th. We’ve got a tiny 1ft SSE swell, but it’s onshore with a 12 mph SE wind, and the combined energy is weak (46). Saturday the 18th is a bit of a tease. In the morning, it’s tiny and messy. But by Saturday afternoon, the wind goes glassy, zero, and the swell picks up to 4ft from the south. The problem is that period is a super short 5 seconds, so it’s just lumpy, weak, and won’t wrap in well. The energy is still low (99). It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary.
Sunday the 19th morning is the best bet in this whole run. We get a clean 2ft swell from the SSE with a gentle offshore wind from the NW at 9 mph. The period is a bit better at 7 seconds, but it’s still a small wave. The energy is weak (61). It’ll be clean, but you’ll be scratching for small, gutless waves. Sunday afternoon and the rest of the week into the following week is a write-off – tiny, onshore, choppy, or cross-shore junk.
If you’re desperate for a wave, the only other potential highlight is Wednesday the 22nd, late in the day. The morning is a total mess with a 5ft SSE swell, but a 19 mph cross-shore wind and a lumpy cross-chop (energy 337). That’s more of a kite day than a surfing day. The afternoon improves a little – the wind swings cross-offshore and the energy drops to 159, but it’s still a poor 3ft.
Beyond that, we see a few more clean small windows, like Thursday the 23rd morning with a clean 2ft SSE swell and a 12 mph offshore, but again, the energy is low. The rest of the second week is a desert of small, poor-condition surf.
The standout period, if you can call it that, is that Sunday the 19th morning, with the best conditions being the clean offshore wind. It’s small, but it will be the most rideable wave you’ll find in the whole 16 days. For the rest, you’re better off saving the wax.
Rusty.
