The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s gonna be a slow, quiet stretch at The South Jetty. The swell is tiny and the energy is weak for most of the period. The best little window of opportunity comes this Sunday, the 19th of July, and it’s barely a blip.
We’re looking at a small, short-period S swell rolling in. Sunday morning sees clean conditions with a light offshore breeze from the NNW, and the swell is a dribbly 2 ft from the S at 7 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 51, so it’s not going to be pumping. But with the glassy conditions, the water is a warm 77°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a nice silver lining. Sunday afternoon goes glassy with a super light WNW wind, and the wave height drops to 2 ft. It’s surfable, but don’t expect much push. Crowds are possible here, so keep an eye out.
After that, the wheels fall off a bit. The swell stays tiny and the wind turns nasty. Monday the 20th has onshore and cross-shore winds, dropping the waves to 1.0 ft and 1 ft. Tuesday the 21st through to the end of the month is a mix of onshore junk and tiny, weak swell from the SSE. The combined energy mostly stays well under 100, often in the 20s and 30s – it’s flat, my friends. There’s a spike on the 22nd of July Wednesday morning with a 5 ft S swell at 8 seconds and moderate energy (313), but the wind is cross-offshore and the surf report calls it poor. That’s a lot of wind for a small, short-period wave, and it’s likely going to be a messy, lumpy mess.
The first week of August is a total write-off. Swell heights drop to 0.7 ft and 0.7 ft, with energy values in the teens. It’s as flat as a pancake.
So, for the entire 16-day window, the only real standout is this Sunday morning and afternoon. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only time you’ll find a clean, glassy surface with the warm water. If you’ve got a longboard and a good attitude, you might get a couple of little ones. The rest of the time? It’s a kite-surfing setup with the bigger winds, or just a day off.
Rusty.
