The Lowdown
Righto, mate. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way down at The South Jetty.
Honestly, for the next 16 days, it’s a pretty flat and frustrating run. The overall pattern is all about small, weak swell and a lot of wind messing with things. The water is a balmy 77°, which is a solid 4° above the norm for this time of year – feels like a warm bath, but that’s about the only excitement. The combined wave energy is mostly in the double digits, hovering around 46 on the first day, which is weak, and it rarely gets exciting.
The first real sniff of something half-decent comes on Wednesday morning, July 22. We get a bit of a bump from the S at 5ft, period of 8 seconds, and the wind turns cross-offshore (W). That makes for clean faces. The energy ticks up to 266, which is moderate. It’s not big, but it’s the cleanest call in the whole window. The afternoon stays clean with a 4ft swell from the SSE, but it’s still small. Even then, the score is marginal, so don’t expect fireworks.
The next standout is a bit of a bugger to call. Thursday morning, July 30, has a light offshore from the NW, keeping things clean, with a 4ft E swell. The energy is a weak 79, but the wind is right. It’s surfable, but ordinary. The rest of the run is all poor conditions – mostly cross-onshore winds, short periods, or tiny surf. There’s a big gap of nothing from late July right through the first week of August until the 30th morning, and then it’s back to small, weak, onshore slop for the rest of the run.
The best bet, if you’re desperate for a paddle, is the Wednesday morning, July 22, when the wind drops clean. For the rest of it, you’re fighting the wind or the lack of swell. Crowds are sometimes a problem here, but with this forecast, I reckon you’ll have the place to yourself.
Rusty.
