The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the South Jetty for the next couple weeks. Gotta be honest – it’s a slow start. We’ve got a long quiet spell before anything worth getting wet for shows up.
The South Jetty is a beach and jetty setup, exposed to the swell. For the rest of August and into early September, the waves are tiny and weak. Swell heights are mostly 0.7 ft to 2 ft. The combined energy is low, from 24 up to 152 (moderate wave energy at best). Winds are cross-off or onshore, sometimes clean, but the waves just aren’t there. The water temp is 78°, which is about 4° warmer than average for this time of year – much warmer than normal. Feels nice, but not much to ride.
There’s a real gap. From now until around Friday September 4th, there’s nothing I’d call surf. Just poor or very ordinary conditions.
Things finally wake up on Friday the 4th of September in the afternoon. We get a 2 ft swell from the SE, period 10 seconds, with a moderate offshore wind from the NW. It’s clean, but still just surfable.
The real standout is Saturday the 5th of September. Morning brings a 3 ft SE swell, period 12 seconds (a solid groundswell), and a moderate offshore wind from the NNW. The combined energy hits 290 (moderate wave energy). This is the best of the whole forecast – clean, offshore, and some push. The afternoon holds up too, with 3 ft from the SE, light offshore wind from the WNW, and energy at 213. This is the window. The South Jetty can handle a SE swell, and with offshore winds, it’ll be clean. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so expect some company if it’s looking good.
After that, Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th see the swell drop and winds turn cross-onshore, so the quality fades.
So, bottom line: don’t bother for the next week and a half. Circle Saturday the 5th of September – that’s your best bet. It’s not big, but it’s clean and rideable. For now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
