The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the charts for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – the forecast for The South Jetty is a bit of a heartbreaker. For the first week and a half, we’re looking at a whole lot of flatness and junk. There’s a gap from now until about the 19th of July where the surf is just not worth talking about. We’re talking tiny, weak waves with crappy wind – a lot of onshore and cross-shore stuff messing it up.
The water is sitting at 77°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year. It’s like bathwater out there, but unfortunately, there’s nothing to ride.
Things start to look a little more interesting toward the end of the month. The first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday the 25th of July. The morning session is the standout. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell rolling in from the SE, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is a light offshore from the WSW, practically glassy. The energy is building too, sitting at a moderate 234. It’s not a beast, but after all that nothing, it’s the best on offer. The afternoon gets ruined by a strong cross-onshore wind that kicks up the swell to 6ft and makes it a choppy mess, so get out early.
Later on, Wednesday the 31st of July could be a sneaky good one. The morning is a write-off, but by the afternoon we’ve got a clean, moderate offshore breeze from the WSW and a clean 2ft SE swell. It’s small, but with the wind cleaning it up, it’ll be a fun little session if you’re patient.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day window, the pick of the bunch is that Saturday morning, the 25th. It’s the only time the swell size, direction, and wind all line up for a decent paddle. The rest of the time, it’s either flat, blown out, or both. For a spot that’s usually consistent, this is a tough run. Keep an eye on it, though – a blank run like this can change fast.
Rusty.
