The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it. The South Jetty is a beach/jetty setup that's exposed to the southeast, and it's northwest offshores that'll clean it up. Right now, the water is running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 77.4°F.
Honestly, there's a long stretch of nothing special here. From Wednesday the 19th right through to the end of August, it's a lot of small, weak, and messy conditions. Swell heights are tiny, mostly under 1.6ft, and the combined energy is weak, sitting in the low double digits or even single digits for much of that time [49, 33, 15, etc.]. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and uninviting. There's a bit of a tease on the 24th and 27th with some cross-off breezes, but the swell is just too small to get excited about. This first week is a write-off.
We finally see a flicker of life on Saturday the 29th. The morning has a clean, gentle offshore wind from the WNW, and the swell bumps up to 2ft from the SE at a 9-second period. The combined energy is still modest at 73, but it's surfable and clean. That afternoon stays clean with a cross-off breeze. Then Sunday morning the 30th is the real standout of the whole 16-day window – glassy conditions, 2ft of SE swell, and a 9-second period. The energy is 55. It's not going to be pumping, but for a clean, small wave session, that Sunday morning is the best you're going to get. The crowds can be around sometimes, so you might have some company.
Come Monday the 31st, the energy picks up a bit to 201, but the onshore wind from the south makes it choppy and poor. Into September, there's a bit more energy in the water, with the 1st and 2nd showing some clean windows and a moderate energy reading of 129, but the swell is still small and the forecast is getting further out. The run finishes on the 3rd with strong onshores and poor surf.
So, for the next couple of weeks, keep your expectations low. The standout is the glassy Sunday morning, the 30th of August. Don't hold your breath for the rest.
