The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Lookin’ at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and to be honest, it’s a pretty quiet stretch for States Avenue (Gas Chambers). The swell energy is weak for the most part, and the wind ain’t doin’ us any favours. The water’s sittin’ at 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year—nice if you’re just havin’ a paddle, but it won’t help the waves.
We’ve got a long gap of poor conditions right through the first week. Saturday the 18th is a write-off with rain showers and a cross-on breeze messin’ up tiny 2 ft swell from the south, period a short 4 seconds, and combined energy of just 21. That’s weak. Sunday the 19th morning offers a little hope: clean conditions with a light offshore from the NNW, but the swell’s only 3 ft from the south at 7 seconds, energy at 68. It’s surfable but very ordinary. The afternoon turns cross-on again.
Monday the 20th through Tuesday the 23rd is more of the same—small, choppy, or onshore. Wednesday the 22nd afternoon is the first real standout: a 4 ft SSE swell with a 9-second period, combined energy of 202, and clean conditions with a light offshore wind. That’s moderate energy, and the waves should have a bit of shape. It’s an intermediate spot, so it’s fine for most surfers. Crowds are possible here, so keep an eye out.
The rest of the week into the end of July is mostly poor, with small swell and cross-on winds. Thursday the 31st of July morning has a 4 ft south swell at 6 seconds, energy 174, but it’s clean with a cross-off breeze. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit bumpy and weak—not really a standout.
Into August, it gets glassy on Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd mornings, but the swell drops to 2 ft and 1 ft, so it’s flat. Not much to get excited about.
Best bet: Wednesday the 22nd afternoon. That 4 ft SSE swell with clean conditions is your best chance for a surf. Everything else is a miss.
Rusty.
