The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about States Avenue (Gas Chambers) for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a pretty grim run. The whole 16-day window is a struggle for any kind of decent surf. There’s a big gap of nothing really worth paddling out for from the start, with only a couple of brief moments that might get you wet, but they’re not standouts.
The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 76°, so that’s a small comfort if you do get in.
Friday morning the 17th is a total write-off – tiny 1.0 ft swell from the south with a weak 4-second period, barely any energy (7). The wind is glassy from the NE, but there’s just nothing to ride. The whole first week is plagued by small, weak swell and shitty wind directions. Saturday the 18th has a bit of a bump in the afternoon with 4 ft from the south, but the period is short (5 seconds) and the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. Not worth it.
Sunday the 19th is the best of a bad bunch. Morning sees 3 ft from the SSE, with a clean offshore NW wind at 9 mph. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon cleans up even more with light NW wind, but the swell drops to 2 ft. The energy is weak (70 and 55). It’s the only time you might get a few grovelly ones, but don’t expect much.
After that, it’s back to tiny, choppy junk for days. Monday the 20th through to the end of July is all cross-onshore winds, small swell, and poor conditions. The combined energy barely cracks 100 only once, on Wednesday the 22nd afternoon (149), but that’s with 3 ft from the SSE and a fresh cross-offshore wind that’s clean but the swell is still weak and short-period.
The second week is more of the same. The morning of Saturday the 25th has a glassy, calm start with 2 ft from the ESE (55 energy), but it’s still tiny. Sunday the 26th morning sees a clean 2 ft from the SE (66 energy) with a cross-offshore wind, but again, it’s just not enough to get excited about. The final days into early August stay small, with fresh cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions.
The bottom line: there’s no proper swell, no standout days, and the break is mostly blown out or flat. It’s a tough stretch. Sometimes, that’s just how it goes here. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, I’d save the wax.
