Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s going on at States Avenue.
To be straight up with you, this stretch is looking pretty flat and messy for the next week or more. The first proper chance to even paddle out is Friday afternoon, July 10, but honestly, it’s not much to get excited about. We’ve got a small southerly swell, just 0.7m, coming from the S, with a short period of 7 seconds. The wind is offshore from the NNW at 15 km/h, so the surface will be clean, but the wave energy is weak (68). It’s surfable, but only just. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you might get a few ordinary ones.
Before that, the whole early part of the week is a write-off. Tuesday through to Friday morning we’ve got weak, messy cross-shore winds and tiny swell – nothing worth suiting up for. The water temp is pretty average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Looking further ahead, there are a few cleaner windows. Monday July 13, we’ve got offshore winds blowing fresh from the NW at 35 km/h in the morning and NNW at 25 km/h in the afternoon. But again, the swell is tiny, only 0.3m from the SE, with a long period of 10 seconds. Wave energy is very low (19-27). Clean, yes, but basically flat. Not a surf day.
Saturday July 18 morning looks glassy – wind from the ESE at just 5 km/h – but the swell is a weak 0.6m from the S at 5 seconds, so you’re looking at tiny, weak lumps. Combined energy is only 38. Not going to get you barrelling.
The only real uptick in size comes on Tuesday July 21, when an ESE swell bumps up to 1.0m at 8 seconds, with moderate wave energy (107). But it’s cross-onshore from the E at 25 km/h, making for choppy, poor conditions. That’s not the kind of day you tell your mates about.
Overall, there’s nothing in this 16-day window that I’d call a standout. If you’re a beginner, the few small clean windows (like Friday afternoon the 10th or Monday the 13th) are manageable, but for anyone looking for real waves, you’re better off waiting. This is one of those stretches where a blank run like this is pretty normal for the area. Keep the board waxed and wait for the next system.
Rusty.
