Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at States Avenue (Gas Chambers). I gotta be straight with you – it’s looking pretty grim for a paddle. The forecast is a long stretch of flat, small, and choppy conditions, so we’re mostly staring at a blank run with very little to get excited about.
We kick off on Thursday, July 2nd with a tiny, weak 3ft swell from the S, but it’s got a period of just 4 seconds – that’s nothing but wind chop – and a stiff 16 mph crosswind. The combined energy is weak at 47, and the water temp is sitting at a slightly warmer-than-normal 71° for this time of year. Not worth a paddle.
Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th are flat and tiny, with only 0.7ft to 1ft of swell. Saturday morning does go glassy, but with that swell size, you’d be better off on a bodyboard. Sunday the 5th through Monday the 6th is more of the same – small, weak, and onshore or choppy.
The first faint glimmer comes on Tuesday morning, July 7th. There’s a 2ft swell from the S, a 5-second period, and the combined energy is still low at 55. It’s surfable, but conditions are ‘very ordinary’. The wind is light and cross-off, so the surface will be clean, but it’s a long way from a standout. We then hit a gap from Tuesday afternoon all the way through to Thursday July 16th – a solid 8-day stretch of poor surf. Swells stay under 4ft, periods are short, and winds are mostly onshore or cross-shore, creating a bumpy mess. For most of that, the combined energy is between 16 and 66, so it’s weak.
Honestly, nothing in this outlook qualifies as a true standout. The best on offer is that Tuesday morning the 7th, and it’s really just a case of “you might get a few clean knee-high waves before the wind picks up.” The swell is only from the S, while the optimal direction for this spot is SE, so you’re not even getting the right angle.
Given the consistent poor quality and predominantly beach/jetty setup, this is looking more like a window for the kite surfers than for paddle surfing. For the whole 16-day window, we’re looking at a long, dry spell of un-surfable conditions. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
