The Lowdown
Right, well, lookin' at the 16-day window, I gotta be straight with ya – it's a lean stretch for States Avenue. The first week is pretty much a write-off, tiny waves and ordinary conditions. The best part of the forecast is a stand-out window at the very end, but it's a long way off.
Let's start with the first bit of surf we can talk about. It's slim pickin's. From Sunday the 23rd right through until Thursday the 28th of August, the swell is tiny, barely 0.7ft to 1ft, with a short period. The wind is mostly cross or cross-off, but the energy is just not there. The water temp is sittin' around 77°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only highlight.
We finally get a sniff of somethin' on Friday the 28th of August. The morning sees a bit of a bump with 2ft from the ESE, a short period of 8 seconds, and a clean cross-off breeze. The combined energy is weak (58), and the report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions". It's nothin' to write home about, but it's the first time you could possibly get wet.
The 29th of August (Saturday) has a real tease. The morning is glassy with a 2ft wave from the S at 6 seconds. It's clean, but the swell is small and weak (45). The afternoon brings a risk of thunderstorms.
The real kicker, the only true standout in this whole 16-day run, is Saturday the 5th of September. That's a week and a half away, so keep it on the radar but don't book the trip yet. On the 5th, we get a clean 3ft swell from the SE with a 12-second period, which is a nice long-period groundswell. The wind is offshore from the NNW, and the combined energy jumps to a solid moderate (290). Both morning and afternoon look good. This is the one to keep an eye on. The 3ft size is perfect for intermediates, and the offshore breeze will see it shape up nicely. Before that, the 4th of September afternoon has a glimmer with 2ft and offshore wind, but it's just "surfable".
The rest of the period after the 5th, into the 7th of September, drops back into poor conditions with onshore winds and energy dropping off.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a blank. You've got one very ordinary day on the 28th of August, and then a proper standout on the 5th of September. That's your window. If you can wait, it might be worth it.
