The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about States Avenue (Gas Chambers). This spot’s a consistent beach/jetty setup, exposed to the south-east, and it’s got that optimum swell direction from the SE. The water’s running a touch warmer than normal right now – 76°F with a 3°F anomaly, so it’s a bit toastier than usual for this time of year.
Honestly, the next two weeks are mostly a bust. There’s a whole lot of poor surf and onshore or cross-shore winds messing things up. You’ll see a few small pulses, but nothing worth paddling out for until we hit Wednesday, 22 July.
That Wednesday afternoon is the real standout. Swell picks up to 5ft from the south, period 9 seconds – not super long, but enough to push some shape. The wind turns offshore from the WNW at 16 mph, which will clean things up nicely. Combined energy hits 572 (moderate), and the forecast says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the one to aim for. Crowds are often here, so expect company, but the quality will be worth it.
After that, it’s a dead zone. Wednesday night through to the end of July – nothing but zeros and poor conditions. Then on Friday, 31 July, there’s a glimmer: 5ft from the ENE, period 8 seconds, combined energy 261, but the wind is cross-shore and the score is marginal. Not a standout, just a maybe. Then another gap until Sunday, 2 August, where we get a small 4ft from the south with a 5-second period, cross-off wind, surfable but ordinary. That’s about it.
So if you’re keen, circle Wednesday 22 July afternoon. Otherwise, the rest of the window is a write-off. Keep an eye on the long-range stuff – forecasts can change, but right now it’s not looking good.
