The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. We’re looking at a long, flat stretch starting Thursday, August 20th, going through the rest of the month with very little to get excited about. Waves stay tiny and winds are mostly a pain.
It’s Misquamicut State Beach. Thursday afternoon (Aug 20th) gives you a small SE swell 1 ft, cross-onshore wind at 9 mph, and wave energy of just 21 – weak. Friday the 21st sees a cross-off NE breeze at 12 mph with swell barely 1 ft, energy down to 15. Saturday the 22nd is more of the same. Real quiet.
Water temp on August 20th is 69°, about 2° cooler than average for now – a slight cool-down, nothing wild.
Sunday the 23rd afternoon brings a bump to 4 ft from the SSE with a period around 6 seconds, but light cross-onshore wind makes it choppy, energy at 118 (moderate). Still not worth it. Monday and Tuesday stay small and messy.
Now, here’s a little window: Saturday morning, August 29th. The wind goes glassy from the east at just 3 mph. Swell is 4 ft from the SSE, period 8 seconds, energy hits 167 (decent moderate range). It’s surfable, but “very ordinary.” Short period so shape is nothing special, and the direction isn’t ideal for this spot (optimum is SE). For a beginner-friendly spot that’s very consistent, you might catch a few fun little ones if you’re just learning, but don’t expect power.
After that, the run into early September stays lackluster. Wednesday September 2nd shows 3 ft from the SE but cross-onshore winds keep it choppy. Thursday and Friday, September 3rd and 4th, finally show a bit more size: 4 to 4 ft from the SE with light NE and NNE cross-off winds, and energy at 166 to 171 – that’s the highest energy in the whole forecast. Period is still short at 8 seconds, so not a proper groundswell, but clean conditions with a light air. That Friday morning (September 4th) with 4 ft, light NNE cross-off, and energy at 171 is probably the best of this whole outlook: clean, small but rideable, early in the day. Still “very ordinary” though – you’ll want a longboard or foamie.
Crowds are “often” at Misquamicut, so even on these smaller days expect some company. Shouldn’t be too bad with the weak surf, though.
Overall, this is a quiet stretch. The only dates worth remembering are Saturday August 29th morning for the glass, and then September 3rd morning through September 4th morning for a little more size and cleaner winds. Nothing here is a standout – just the least bad of a flat spell.
Keep an eye out – things can always change.
