The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, the first several days are a bit of a write-off. We’re looking at a long stretch of weak, short-period windswell and messy onshore winds, so there’s nothing worth paddling out for from the start of the period right through until the end of the week. The swell is tiny and the wind is just killing any chance of a decent wave.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Thursday the 23rd of July in the morning. Misquamicut State Beach should finally see a jump in size with a S swell pushing 6 ft, and with a period of 10 seconds, that’s a proper groundswell with some energy behind it (535 combined energy). The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, which will keep the faces clean. This is the standout of the whole run. The water is a bit colder than average for this time of year, sitting around 68°, so a little extra rubber might be a good idea. This is a beginner-friendly break, so the size will be manageable for most, but it’s a very consistent spot that can get crowded often, especially on a morning like this. The low tide is the only thing to watch for, but with that clean wind and solid S swell, it’s the best on offer.
After that, things drop off again pretty quickly. The afternoon of the 23rd gets onshore and messy, and the following days are back to small, weak, and choppy junk. The Sunday morning of the 26th of July is a notable mention – it’s tiny, only 3 ft, but the wind goes glassy, coming from the NNW. That’s a rare moment of absolute calm, but the swell is just too anemic to get excited about. You might find a clean little knee-high wave if you’re desperate.
The run from the 27th onwards is pretty grim. The swell stays below 3 ft, with a mix of weak period and mostly onshore or cross-shore winds. There’s a brief moment on the 30th of July in the afternoon where the wind goes glassy again, but it’s only a 3 ft E swell with a short 6-second period. It’s surfable but very ordinary.
The Friday morning of the 31st of July pops up with a clean cross-offshore wind and a 3 ft ESE swell, a solid 4 ft towards the afternoon, but the wind freshens up and the quality is poor. The final days into the first week of August look flat and hopeless.
So, the short story: Thursday morning the 23rd of July is your one clear shot. Get on it early. Everything else is a long, quiet stretch of small, windy, or flat conditions. It’s the kind of run that can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
