The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this straight. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for a proper surf around here. We’ve got a stretch of tiny, junky waves with wind all over the place. Honestly, it’s a lot of flat spells and onshore slop. But don’t write it off completely – there’s a little pulse of energy trying to push through the middle of the week after next.
Right now, through the weekend and into early next week, it’s mostly small and messy. We’re talking knee-to-waist high dribble, if we’re lucky. The swell is weak, with combined energy values of just 12 to 84, and what’s there is short-period windswell. About as exciting as watching paint dry. Winds are mostly cross or cross-on, so it’s not even clean.
Monday morning, the 24th, is the first real flicker of hope. We get a bit more size, around 4ft to 5ft, and the energy jumps to 228. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’s glassy and clean for a bit. It’s still not amazing, but it’s something. Tuesday morning the 25th is similar, with a touch more size and clean conditions early.
The standout, if we can call it that, is Thursday morning, the 28th of August. The swell pushes up to 5ft and the energy is at 516, which is the strongest we see in this whole run. It’s still a short-period swell, coming from the south, so it’ll be a bit lumpy at spots that are too exposed. Wind is light and cross-shore, so if you can find a protected nook, it could be worthwhile. Because of the size, I’d steer the beginners away, this one’s for the more experienced crew.
After that, it drops off again for the weekend. The very last day, Tuesday the 2nd of September, has some clean morning surf in the 4ft range, but the wind is on it.
The main thing to keep in mind: this is a long stretch of poor surf quality. Lots of small days with cross-shore winds. We’re just going to have to be patient and pick the cleanest windows.
