The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the charts for Misquamicut State Beach, and honestly, it’s a pretty quiet stretch ahead. The water temp is sitting around 69°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. But the surf? It’s gonna be a long wait for anything worthwhile.
The next several days are mostly small, weak, and messy. From Wednesday afternoon, August 19th, right through to the end of August, we’ve got tiny waves – mostly 1 ft to 2 ft, coming from the south or southeast, with short periods around 4 to 9 seconds. Combined energy is low, mostly in the 20s to 80s (weak energy), so there’s just not much push. Wind is all over the place – cross, cross-on, cross-off – but it’s not gonna make these little ripples any better. Even when we get a glassy morning on Sunday, August 23rd, with 2 ft and a 6-second period, it’s still just poor surf conditions. There’s a fair gap of nothing worth paddling out for.
Then around Monday, August 24th, we see a bit of a lift. The morning has 3 ft from the south, 6-second period, with clean cross-off winds from the WNW. Energy bumps to 63 (still weak), and it’s described as “surfable but very ordinary.” That’s about the best we get for a while. The afternoon stays clean but drops back to 2 ft. Not a standout, but if you’re desperate, that Monday morning is your best bet.
The pattern continues small and lackluster through the rest of the week and into the next. We get another clean, glassy morning on Wednesday, August 26th, but only 1 ft – not enough to ride. By Friday, August 28th, the morning shows 3 ft from the ESE, 6-second period, with clean cross-off wind, energy at 77 (weak). Still just “poor surf conditions” though.
Finally, we start to see something promising on Tuesday, September 1st. The morning brings 1 ft from the southeast, but with a 12-second period – that’s a proper groundswell. Energy hits 109 (moderate), and the wind is a clean cross-off from the NE. The afternoon goes glassy with light SE wind. This is the first real glimpse of quality. Then Wednesday, September 2nd, morning is glassy again, 2 ft from the SE, 10-second period, energy 79 (weak), but still surfable. That Tuesday morning into Wednesday morning window is the standout of the whole outlook – clean, longer period, small but workable. It’s not big, but it’s the best on offer.
After that, it fades back into small, choppy, onshore junk. So if you’re hanging out for a wave, pencil in that Tuesday, September 1st morning for a longboard session. The rest of the 16 days is mostly a waiting game.
