The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about what’s happening at Misquamicut. Bottom line: it’s a quiet period. There’s no big swell coming, and the wind is going to be a pain more often than not. If you’re looking for a surf, you’ve got to pick your moments carefully.
The water is 19°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so you might want a 3/2.
The first real chance to get wet is Monday morning, July 20th. It’s tiny, just 0.7m of S swell, but the wind is dead calm, glassy, and the waves will be clean. The energy is weak (61), so this is a longboard or foamie session. The break is very consistent, so you’ll get plenty of little waves to play on.
The next one to look at is Wednesday, July 22nd. The swell comes up to 1.9m from the S, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s moderate energy (562 in the morning, 586 in the afternoon). It’s not a big swell, but it’s the biggest of the run. The wind goes cross-offshore from the W in the afternoon, which will clean it up. It’s the best-looking swell, even if the quality is just “marginal” for tide or something.
Thursday morning, July 23rd, is worth a look too. 1.3m of S swell with a light cross-shore from the ENE at 10 km/h. The energy is moderate (302), and it will be clean. A surfable wave.
After that, it’s a long dry spell. From Friday, July 24th, through the end of the month, the swell drops below 1m and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on. There’s a tiny window on Sunday, July 26th, with 0.7m and a cross-offshore wind from the W, and another on Monday, July 27th, with 0.6m and glassy conditions, but it’s all very small.
The standout is Wednesday, July 22nd in the afternoon. That 1.9m of S swell with the W cross-offshore wind is the best of the bunch. It’s consistent, so you’ll get waves. For a beginner, the small, glassy Monday morning is the safest bet. For anyone else, that Wednesday afternoon is the only real hope.
