Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. Honestly, folks, it’s a tough stretch ahead for Misquamicut State Beach. The next week and a half is looking mostly like a write-off unless you’re desperate for a paddle. The water’s sitting at about 67°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We kick off Tuesday morning the 7th with a messy NE wind howling at 16 mph, cross-off but still ugly. Swell is a weak 4 ft from the ESE, and that period is a short, snappy 6 seconds. The energy is pathetic – just 96 (weak). This is poor surf, not worth suiting up for. That sets the tone right through to the end of the first week.
Wednesday morning the 8th is a tease. We get a glassy morning with a light SW breeze at only 3 mph, and the swell drops to 3 ft, still from the ESE, period 7 seconds. The water’s clean, but the waves are ordinary. It’s surfable if you’re a total beginner just wanting to get wet, but there’s no push. That’s about the best we see for days.
From Thursday the 9th all the way through to Monday the 14th, it’s a wasteland. Swell heights barely crack 2 ft, periods are short, and the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore. The combined energy stays in the weak range – mostly between 22 and 75. There’s a brief clean session on Friday morning the 10th with a 1 ft, 10-second swell from the SE, but it’s tiny. For a beach break that needs some punch, this is just a flat spell.
Now, there’s a glimmer in the second week. Wednesday morning the 15th sees a bump to 5 ft from the SW, period 7 seconds, with light SW wind at 3 mph. The energy jumps to 285 (moderate). But it’s a cross-on wind, and the wave comment calls it “marginal.” It’s not excellent, but it’s the first real size we’ve seen. Still, the onshore breeze will chop it up.
The real standout – and I mean the only one worth marking on your calendar – is Sunday morning the 19th. Swell hits 7 ft from the S, period 7 seconds, with a cross-shore WSW breeze at 9 mph. Energy is a solid 434 (strong). This is proper size, but at 7 ft, it’s getting big for beginners. The wind is cross-shore, so it won’t be glassy, but it’ll be rideable. It’s the best swell of the whole 16 days.
Then on Monday morning the 20th, it peaks at 8 ft from the S, period 10 seconds, with WSW wind dropping to a light 3 mph. Energy is a massive 2196 (very strong). That’s big, powerful, and long-period for this beach. For a beach break, that long 10-second period is going to make it a bit walled-up and tough, but for experienced surfers, this is the session. Wind is cross-shore and light, so it should stay reasonably clean. This is the only time I’d say “go” if you’re an expert. Beginners, stay clear – 8 ft is expert-only territory.
After that, it fades through Tuesday and Wednesday, dropping back to 4 ft and smaller, with onshore winds creeping back in. The window is narrow.
So, honestly, the only two sessions that look worthwhile are Sunday morning the 19th and Monday morning the 20th. The rest is either flat, choppy, or too small to bother. For a break that’s very consistent, a blank run like this is a bit of a bummer, but it happens. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d pencil in that Monday morning for the experts and keep the rest of your gear dry.
Rusty.
