The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. To be honest, looking at the next sixteen days for Nauset Light Beach, the story is pretty simple: there’s just no surf to get excited about. The whole stretch is a flat spell with nothing worth paddling out for. The forecast shows a long gap of poor conditions from now right through to the end of the period, with no recommendations at all. It’s one of those blank runs that can happen around here, and while it’s a bummer, it’s not unusual.
The first bit of the outlook, starting Thursday the 20th, is a write-off. Swell is tiny, barely 1 ft, with a weak period of 7 seconds from the ESE, and the combined energy is a measly 24 – that’s weak. The morning starts glassy with a light WSW breeze, but the wave comment says it all: poor surf. Thursday afternoon gets a bit more breeze from the S at 12 mph, cleaning it up, but the swell drops to 1 ft. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are equally grim, with onshore winds and choppy conditions, swell just 1 ft to 3 ft and short, weak periods. The energy stays low, under 36. Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 25th sees some offshore winds, especially Monday morning with a clean WSW at 16 mph, but the swell is still tiny – 0.7 ft to 2 ft – and the energy is next to nothing, down to 7 on Tuesday morning. Water temperature on Thursday the 20th morning was 69°, which is about average for this time of year with a normal anomaly of 0.4°.
As we move into the second week, things don’t pick up. Wednesday the 26th through Friday the 28th brings a slight bump in swell to 3 ft, but the period is a short 5 to 7 seconds, energy only reaching 59 at best, with onshore or cross-onshore winds making it choppy. Saturday the 29th through to the end, including Tuesday the 1st of September, stays in the same rut: small swell, usually 1 ft to 2 ft, with cross-offshore winds from the SSW, but the energy is weak, never breaking 42. The last few days, Wednesday the 2nd through Friday the 4th, have a bit more swell at 3 ft to 3 ft, but again it’s short period, onshore or cross-shore, and the wave comment stays poor.
There’s no standout here. No day where the swell, wind, and quality line up. The swell is just too small, and the energy is always weak. For the experienced crew, there’s nothing to chase, and for beginners, there’s not even a bump to learn on. It’s a tough stretch, but it’s part of the deal. Keep an eye on the forecasts – things can change.
Rusty.
