The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Nauset Light Beach. The next 16 days look like a tough stretch for getting a decent wave. We’re staring down the barrel of a long, quiet period with hardly any swell energy to speak of. The whole forecast is a string of “poor surf conditions” until we get to the first week of September.
From now through the end of August, it’s a flat spell. There’s barely a ripple. The few tiny pulses of swell that show up are weak, with combined wave energy barely cracking 30 or 40 (33). The water temp is sitting around 69°, which is about 1° warmer than normal for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a touch on the mild side.
The first real hint of life doesn’t show up until Thursday, September 3rd. The morning sees a bit of a bump from the southeast at 4ft, but it’s a short period of 5 seconds and suffers from a light cross-onshore wind. The combined energy jumps to 65, but it’s still a messy, weak affair. The afternoon gets a little more size, 4ft from the ESE, and the energy ticks up to 101 (moderate), but the wind is onshore, so it’s not going to be pretty.
Friday, September 4th is more of the same. The swell stays around 3ft to 4ft from the east and southeast, with energy climbing to 139 (moderate). The problem is the wind; it’s light onshore or cross-onshore, so the waves will be lumpy and lack shape. Not the kind of day that gets you out of bed early.
Now, Saturday, September 5th is the one true standout in this whole outlook. The morning delivers the best conditions we’ll see. The swell is 4ft from the ENE with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy hits 158 (moderate). The big winner here is the wind – it goes glassy, dead calm. That will make for clean, smooth conditions. The swell is small enough for beginners to handle, but it’s not going to be a world-class wave. The afternoon sees a bigger push of 5ft (energy 292), but the wind switches to a cross-shore, which will chop it up. The morning window is the only real chance to get a good one.
After that, Sunday, September 6th drops right back off to tiny, weak surf with poor conditions.
So, to sum it up: this is a long, dry run with hardly any surf. The only real chance to wet your line is the morning of Saturday, September 5th at Nauset Light Beach. It’s a small, glassy window that’s worth a look, but don’t expect much. The rest is a write-off. The break is fairly consistent, so it’s a bit of a shock to see such a blank run, but it happens. Keep an eye on the charts, this could change.
Rusty.
