The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for Nauset Light Beach. I’ve gotta be honest with you, looking at the next two weeks… it’s a tough stretch. The forecast is built entirely around this one spot, and it’s looking like a long, flat spell with very little to get excited about. We’re not seeing any real swell energy hitting the beach for a solid run.
The first few days, from the 19th to the 21st, we’ve got nothing but tiny, weak waves. We’re talking ankle-snappers at best, with swell heights barely reaching 1ft to 3ft, and the combined energy is almost non-existent, sitting mostly in the low 20s to 30s. The wind is a bit all over the place, too. On the 19th, we have a light North wind, but it’s cross-shore, so the surface is a bit bumpy. The 20th looks cleaner with a light offshore breeze, but the waves are just too small to bother with. The 21st is a write-off with a strong onshore wind from the SSE and a short, choppy period.
Things get a little interesting on Wednesday the 22nd, but it’s a mixed bag. The morning sees a jump in energy to 306, with a 5ft swell from the S, but the wind is a strong cross-offshore from the SW, making it unsurfable. The afternoon, however, is the one true standout in the entire forecast. The wind swings offshore, and the swell bumps up to 5ft from the S with a 10-second period, pushing the combined energy to 450. That’s a solid, clean wave for a beach break, but it’s a bit punchy. For the experienced crew, this is your window. Beginners might find it a little too much, as it’s right on the edge of that 5ft mark. The water temperature is 67°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
But that’s the only highlight. After the 22nd, we drop straight back into the doldrums. From the 23rd all the way through to the 3rd of August, it’s a frustrating stretch. The swell collapses back down to under 3ft, and the combined energy rarely gets out of double digits. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, and when it does go light or glassy on the 2nd of August, the waves are down to 0.7ft. It’s just not happening. The 30th of July shows a bit of a pulse with a 4ft swell from the NE, but it’s a short-period windswell with poor conditions and a light onshore wind.
So, here’s the bottom line: the only real shot you’ve got is the afternoon of Wednesday the 22nd. If you’re an intermediate or expert, that’s the one to circle. The rest of the 16 days is a waiting game. It’s a quiet summer pattern for the Cape. Given the lack of consistency, this blank run is a bit unusual, but it happens. Keep an eye on the charts, because things can change, and we might get a better shot later on.
Rusty.
