The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be straight about Nauset Light Beach. Right now, there’s absolutely nothing going on. The whole 16 days is a dud for real surf. No quality waves, no real swell to speak of. It’s a long stretch of flatness and small, weak junk.
There’s a gap from now until the end of the first week where you’d be lucky to get a rideable wave. The water temp is around 70°F, about normal for the season. But the waves? Forget it. Swell heights barely reach 1 foot to 1 feet with short periods of 4 to 6 seconds, delivering weak energy (9 to 30). Winds are mostly cross-off or cross-on, but the swell is just too small to do anything with.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd offer a slight bump in height—about 3 feet to 2 feet—but period is still a pathetic 4 to 5 seconds. Even Sunday morning goes glassy with a light west wind, but the swell is tiny and weak (energy 30). It’s clean but not surfable.
Things get a little more interesting around the 28th of August into early September. On the 28th, Friday morning, we see 3 feet from the east, period 5 seconds, but it’s cross-on and lumpy with a fresh breeze. The energy is moderate (73). That afternoon builds to 4 feet, period 6 seconds, and energy hits 145. Still, it’s onshore wind and messy. The 29th and 30th stay around 4 feet, mostly from the northeast, but wind is onshore or cross-on. The energy sits in the 100 to 150 range, so moderate, but quality is poor. This is a beach break, and with that short period junk, it’ll be choppy and closed out. Honestly, if the wind stays strong, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Into the first days of September, we see similar sized swell, still short period, and still cross-on or onshore. The 31st of August has 4 feet from the northeast, period 7 seconds, energy 154, but it’s onshore. The 1st of September has 3 feet from the east-northeast, period 9 seconds, still cross-on. The longer period (9 seconds) is a slight improvement, but the wind and direction aren’t right for this spot.
Bottom line: there’s no standout session. The best I can say is maybe the 28th or 29th of August might offer the most size, but it’s not going to be clean. If you’re a beginner, stay away when it’s over 5 feet, but that’s not even the case here. For experts, it’s not worth it. Just keep an eye on the charts—sometimes things shift.
