The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat for the Cape. We’re staring down a long, dry spell before anything worth paddling out for shows up. This is one of those stretches where you might be better off cleaning the wetsuit or going for a beach run.
Nauset Light Beach is the only break on the cards, and for the foreseeable future, it’s a no-go. We’re talking about a solid week-plus of tiny, weak waves. From Saturday the 22nd right through to Monday the 31st of August, it’s all under 1 ft. The combined swell energy is barely registering, often below 30 (weak energy). Winds are all over the place too – cross-off, cross-on, onshore – none of it is making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing wild to report there.
There is a gap of several days with absolutely nothing worth mentioning. You could practically walk across the sandbar.
Finally, we get a little flicker of life in the first few days of September. Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon, we see a tiny bump of 4 ft from the North, but with a short period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is just 70 (weak energy). Still, the wind goes light and cross-off, so it’s clean. Then Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is the one tiny standout. Swell jumps to 4 ft from the NNE (a bit of north in it), period is still short at 6 seconds, but the combined energy climbs up to 122 (moderate wave energy). The wind is light and cross-off from the West, meaning it should be clean and rideable. It’s not a classic Nauset day by any means – the swell direction is a bit off for the optimum east exposure – but for beginners, this is the only time in the whole 16-day run that’s even surfable. Don’t expect any crowd; there’s nothing to compete for.
After that morning, it drops straight back to flat and messy again on Wednesday afternoon as the wind howls from the SW at 22 mph. The rest of the week into September 6th is a write-off, with onshore winds and a lumpy 5 ft close-out on the Sunday morning that’s more suited to a kite than a paddle.
So, the honest truth? If you are a beginner and jonesing for a wave, that Wednesday morning, September 2nd, is your only shot. For everyone else, it’s a waiting game. Forecasts can change though, so don’t write the whole season off just yet.
Rusty.
