The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what's coming up for Nauset Light Beach.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We're staring down a long, flat spell starting now and running all the way through to the end of August and into the first few days of September. The energy is just not there, with combined swell energy readings barely breaking 30 (22) on a good day. You're looking at ankle-snappers and knee-high dribblers, mostly under 2ft. The wind is all over the shop, sometimes clean, sometimes not, but it doesn't matter much when there's no push. The water temp is sitting around 69°, which is about normal for this time of year, not that it’ll help you much.
There's a tiny flicker of hope on the 31st of August with a long-period 18-second swell, but it's only 0.7ft, so it's a tease more than anything. The energy bumps up to 64, but it's still just a lump. After that, it's right back to the doldrums.
Now, we finally see a proper pulse of energy roll in around the 2nd of September. Swell height picks up to 5ft, and the combined energy jumps to 206 – that's a real number. The wind is looking cross-off from the S on the afternoon of the 2nd, which should clean it up a bit. This is a NE windswell, period around 6-7 seconds, so it's not going to be a thing of beauty, but it'll be the most rideable we've seen in a while. Still, the conditions are described as marginal, so keep your expectations in check.
The 3rd and 4th of September see a bit more size, but the wind swings onshore and gets strong, with readings up to 22 mph. That'll chop things up something fierce. We get a big spike in energy on the 4th, hitting 420, but it's coming with a messy onshore wind, making it a real battle. The period stretches out to 12 seconds on the 4th, which is a nice groundswell, but again, the wind is wrong for the beach. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.
The best bet in this whole run is a hard sell. The afternoon of the 2nd of September is your standout, but only because it's the least bad. The swell will be 5ft from the NE, and with that S cross-off wind, it'll be the cleanest we get. The break is a sandbar, so it can be fickle, and crowds are possible, but for a couple of hours, you might snag a few. After that, it's a case of watching the wind and picking your moments.
So, there you have it. A lot of flat, a little bit of hope, and one afternoon that might just be worth a look. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
