The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and the news for Nauset Light Beach is pretty quiet to start. We’re looking at a long, flat stretch with tiny, weak swell coming out of the southeast, barely pushing 1 to 2 feet. The combined wave energy is in the weak range, mostly under 50, and the wind is all over the place, making it choppy or just plain messy. Water temp is about average for the season.
From Tuesday the 18th all the way through the end of August, it’s a tough go. Waves are mostly under 2 feet, with short periods around 4 to 8 seconds – that’s just wind chop. A few mornings, like Wednesday the 19th, go glassy with a light offshore breeze, but the swell is only 2 feet and 6 seconds. Not worth suiting up. There are a couple of afternoons with clean offshore wind, but the waves are still tiny. This dry spell lasts more than a week.
The first sign of life comes on Saturday the 29th of August. The morning brings a moderate offshore wind and clean conditions, with waves around 2 feet from the southeast. The energy is still weak at 61, but the report finally says “surfable waves.” It’s a small window.
Now, the real standout is Monday the 31st of August. The morning delivers a 5-foot swell from the northeast, with a combined energy of 218 – that’s moderate power. The wind is light and cross-offshore, keeping it clean. That’s the best day of the whole 16-day forecast. The period is short at 6 seconds, so the waves will be a bit soft, but it’s the only time we get proper size. The afternoon drops to 4 feet, still rideable. The next morning, Tuesday the 1st of September, still has 3-foot waves with 129 energy and light wind, so it’s a decent follow-up.
For beginners, that 5-foot swell on the 31st might be a little heavy. For everyone else, it’s the one to chase. Crowds at Nauset Light Beach can be around sometimes, so expect company.
The first week and a half is a write-off. The best bet is clearly Monday the 31st of August morning. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only real surf in the whole run.
Keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned.
