The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cookin’ at Nauset Light Beach. I gotta be straight with you – this stretch of the Cape is lookin’ pretty flat and quiet for a long stretch. We’ve got a big gap of nada coming up, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board.
Right now, Monday the 13th, we’re seeing a tiny 0.3ft easterly bump with a weak, short-period pulse. The wind is a fresh cross-offshore from the SSW, so the water’s clean, but there’s just no energy to work with. The combined swell energy is a measly 3 – that’s about as weak as it gets. The water temp is sitting at 67°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least a dip won’t be a shocker.
This flat spell just keeps draggin' on. Through Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the swell barely moves the needle. We’re talking 0.3ft to 1ft all week, with periods under 10 seconds. The wind shifts around, but it doesn’t matter – there’s nothing to ride. The whole first week is a write-off, folks. The combined energy readings stay in the single digits or low twenties, which is just sad.
We finally see a little pulse of life on Friday morning, July 17th. A 3ft swell from the north shows up, but the period is a pathetic 4 seconds. That’s pure wind chop, short and weak. The combined energy gets up to 53 (moderate energy), but it’s not gonna be any kind of clean groundswell. The wind is cross-offshore from the NW, so it’ll be ridable, but don’t expect any real shape. There’s a moment on Friday afternoon with glassy conditions and a 2ft north swell, but again, the period is just 4 seconds. It’s a small window of fun for a log, but nothing special.
The doldrums return for the weekend and the start of the next week. The highlight of the entire 16-day window, if you can call it that, is a tiny bump on Sunday, July 26th. We’ve got a 3ft southerly swell (7-second period) with glassy conditions in the afternoon. The combined energy hits 80, which is the highest we’ll see, but it’s still only moderate. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and that’s the truth. It’s the only day I’d even point a toe in the water, and even then, you’re just looking for a knee-high ripple.
Honestly, for the next 16 days, Nauset Light is a ghost town. There’s no stand-out session, no big swell on the horizon. The only real hope is to keep an eye on that Sunday the 26th for a super mellow, glassy session on a foamie. Save your gas money for now.
Rusty.
