The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Narragansett Town Beach is a tough one to call. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, uncooperative surf with a lot of onshore or cross-shore wind. The first real glimmer of something worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Sunday the 19th, and even then it’s only just a sniff.
The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is right about average for this time of year, so no drama there.
The first few days, from the 16th through to the 18th, are a write-off. Tiny waves, poor conditions, and winds that are mostly cross or cross-onshore. Not worth getting wet for.
Sunday the 19th morning is where things get interesting, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The swell picks up to 7 ft out of the SSW, and the combined energy jumps way up to 656 (moderate, heading toward strong). That’s a real pulse of energy. The wind is a cross-off from the WNW, so the surf should be clean. But that’s a bit of size for a beginner spot, and the period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and close together. Sunday afternoon drops to 3 ft from the S, with an offshore wind, so it’ll be cleaner but smaller.
Monday the 20th morning is a total tease. It’s glassy, dead calm, with 3 ft S swell, but the energy is only 105 (weak). It’d be a pretty gutless wave.
The standout in this whole forecast is Wednesday the 22nd. The morning session is your best bet. Swell is a solid 5 ft from the S, with a combined energy of 420 (moderate). The wind is offshore from the WNW, so the waves will be clean and lined up. It’s not a massive day, but it’s the cleanest, most surfable you’re going to see. The afternoon holds up too, with 4 ft and light offshore wind, but the morning is the pick.
After that, it’s a slow slide back into small, messy conditions. The 23rd and 24th have some waist-high swell, but the wind is either cross or onshore, chopping it up. The 25th and 26th are more of the same, with the 26th seeing a bit of size (6 ft) but it’s cross-onshore and messy.
The final days, from the 27th to the 31st, are all small, weak, and windy. The 27th and 28th have some clean-ish cross-off wind, but the swell is tiny. Forget it.
Bottom line: if you’re dead set on a paddle, aim for the morning of Wednesday the 22nd. It’s the only window that’s going to give you a proper, clean surf. The 19th is a distant second option, but it’s a bit of a beast for a beginner. Don’t hold your breath for the rest.
Rusty.
