Table - best surf conditions forecast for Lighthouse over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, hard look at what the ocean’s got cookin’ for us at the Point Judith Lighthouse.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry spell for the next several days. The surf is tiny and the conditions are all over the place. You’re not going to want to paddle out on Saturday the 11th or Sunday the 12th with weak, short-period swell and onshore or cross-onshore winds messing it up. Monday and Tuesday of next week are much the same story – barely anything to ride, and what’s there isn't worth the paddle.
We’ve got a big gap of basically no surf until we finally see a pulse of energy. Things start to look a little more interesting on Wednesday the 15th. The morning brings a jump in the swell to 5ft out of the SW. The wind is offshore from the W at 15 km/h, making for some clean lines. The combined wave energy hits a moderate 267, so it’ll have a little push. The period is short, just 6 seconds, so the waves will be a bit soft and crumbly, but it's the only real chance for a decent session in the first week. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is about normal for this time of year. This spot is an exposed reef and point, so it can handle a bit of swell. Keep in mind, the crowds here can be around sometimes, so you might have a few friends out.
After that Wednesday morning window, it fades again. A few glassy mornings on the 17th and 18th, but the swell is barely 2ft and 1ft, so it’s flat lines.
Looking further out, the second week shows a bit more energy but the winds turn nasty. On Monday the 20th, we see a clean morning with 4ft swell from the S and light offshore wind, but that’s about it for that day. The real tease comes on Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th. The swell steps up, hitting 5ft on Thursday and then 7ft on Friday morning from the S. The combined energy is strong, hitting 464 on Thursday and 523 on Friday. But here’s the heartbreak – the wind is hammering from the ESE and E, blowing onshore or cross-onshore at 25-30 km/h. It’s going to be a messy, lumpy, choppy mess. That size with that wind is really only going to appeal to the kite surfers, not the paddle crew. The swell period is still only 8 seconds, so it’s a windswell, not clean groundswell. This is strictly for experts if anyone even tries it, but honestly, the quality is gone.
The one standout, if you can call it that, is the Wednesday morning, July 15th. That’s your best bet for a clean, surfable wave, even if it’s a bit soft. If you can wait that long, go for it.
Rusty.
