The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let me tell you what we've got coming.
Right from the start, I’ll be straight with you: surf is going to be a real struggle for most of this outlook. We're looking at a solid run of days with barely anything worth paddling out for. From Wednesday the 19th of August all the way through to Sunday the 23rd, the waves are tiny and the wind is all wrong. You’re looking at knee-high slop at best, with a weak combined energy of just 57. It’s practically flat.
Then we hit Monday the 24th of August, and there's a tiny glimmer. The Lighthouse (Point Judith) finally sees some clean conditions with a light offshore breeze from the WNW. It’s only 3 ft of swell from the south with a poor 6-second period, and the energy is still weak at 62, but it’s the first surfable wave we’ve seen. It’s clean, but it’s not going to set the world on fire. After that, we slide right back into tiny, weak surf for days.
The next genuinely interesting pulse doesn't show up until later. The 27th of August brings a jump in energy, hitting 154 on Thursday morning, with 3 ft of swell from the south. But the wind is a fresh cross-shore at 19 mph, making it lumpy and pretty average. Not a standout, just a step up in size.
Now, if you’re a confident surfer, keep an eye on Friday the 28th of August. We finally get some proper push with 5 ft of swell from the south, combined energy hitting 312 – that’s moderate to strong – and the wind is a cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean. This is the pick of the entire window for experienced surfers only, as it’s a bit too much grunt for beginners. The swell period is still short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but it's the best wave height and energy we see.
After that, the swell fades fast. Saturday and Sunday the 29th and 30th see a drop back to small, weak surf, though Sunday morning looks glassy for the tiny 1 ft leftovers. The very end of the period into September is a write-off with onshore winds and choppy conditions.
Honestly, for the next two and a half weeks, the only real standout is that Friday the 28th. For the rest, it’s going to be a waiting game. The water is sitting at 70°F, which is about average for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re waiting.
Rusty.
