Table - best surf conditions forecast for Lighthouse over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a hard look at what's on the table.
To be straight with you, this is a rough patch for the Point Judith area. We're looking at a solid 16-day stretch with nothing but "poor surf conditions" showing in the data. The whole run is basically a write-off for anything worth paddling out for.
Starting from Thursday, the 20th of August, right through the rest of the month and into the first few days of September, it’s a wasteland. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1 ft to 3 ft, and the period is junk – mostly under 8 seconds. The wind is almost always cross or onshore, chopping everything up. The combined wave energy is weak, barely cracking triple digits on a couple of afternoons (like the 99 on Sunday, 23rd August, and 266 on Monday, 24th August), but that energy is worthless when it’s attached to such small, messy swell.
The only glimmer on the whole chart is a short window on the morning of Tuesday, the 25th of August. You get a clean, offshore wind from the WNW at 9 mph, which is a huge plus for a reef and point break like Lighthouse (Point Judith). The water temp is about 70°F, which is normal for this time of year. But the catch is brutal: the swell is a knee-wobbling 1 ft from the SE with a period of 11 seconds. That long period might make it look okay, but there’s simply not enough water moving. The combined energy is a paltry 37. It’s a tease, not a session.
For the rest of the run, expect plenty of light rain, moderate rain, and cross-onshore winds. Saturday the 22nd and Friday the 28th look particularly unpleasant. Even when the winds turn offshore again in the first week of September, like on the 3rd and 4th, the swell is still too small to bother. The water temp anomaly is basically flat, so no weird currents to blame.
Honestly, if you’re looking to paddle, save your energy. This setup with the consistent onshore wind and small, weak swell looks more interesting for kite surfing than a proper surf session.
Rusty.
