Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for our little corner of the world.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty tough for a proper surf at Lighthouse (Point Judith). We’ve got a solid run of small, weak, and messy conditions staring us down. The combined energy is barely registering a pulse, with values hanging in the weak range (15 to 20) for the opening Sunday. That’s just wind chop with a period of 8 seconds, which is about as exciting as watching paint dry.
The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there. But the real story is the wind. We get a gut punch on Monday, July 6th, with easterly winds blowing 18 to 21 mph and heavy rain. That swell jumps up to 6 ft to 7 ft, but it’s all short-period, wind-driven junk from the ESE. The wave energy climbs to a moderate 241 to 336, but it’s a total mess. Honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We do get a bit of a reprieve on Thursday, July 9th, and Friday, July 10th. The wind swings to the SW, going cross-offshore, which cleans things right up. The swell is still small, only 3 ft to 4 ft, and the period is a lousy 5-6 seconds, so it’s not going to have any punch. But it’ll be clean, and the wave energy is still only moderate (119 to 146). It’s a better bet for a longboard or a cruise, but nothing to get worked up about.
The weekend of July 11th-12th shows a tiny bump in size from the south, with a slightly better 8-second period, but the winds are a mix of cross and light, keeping things just average. The early part of the following week is flat again.
Now, hold on to your boardies, because there’s a glimmer at the very end of the forecast. On Saturday, July 18th, the swell finally shows some life. We’re looking at 8 ft from the SSW in the morning, with a combined energy of 800 – that’s a solid, moderate-to-strong push. The period is 8 seconds, so it’s still a bit short, but it’s a lot of water moving. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy, but that’s a far cry from the tiny slop we’ve been dealing with. For the experienced crew, this is the standout window. It’s still a week and a half away, so keep your fingers crossed.
Stay tuned, and I’ll see you in the water if the swell ever shows up.
