The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the Point Judith area over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, I gotta be straight with you. The first week or so is pretty grim. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands. The first sign of anything surfable is a little bump on Wednesday the 15th, but it’s not gonna get your heart racing. The real wait is for a pulse of energy that shows up later.
Lighthouse (Point Judithlighthouse) is our only break on the cards, a reef and point setup that loves a good SSE swell. Right now, the water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing weird there.
For Wednesday the 15th, we’ve got a weak 4ft swell from the SSW, with a short 6-second period. The energy is super weak (97). The wind is light offshore though, WNW to W, so the surface will be clean, but the waves will be small and gutless. It’s surfable, but you’re gonna be doing a lot of waiting for a crummy little wave. Not worth the paddle, really.
Then we hit a brick wall. From Thursday the 16th right through to Sunday the 27th, the story is the same: poor surf conditions. We’re talking tiny waves, often with bad onshore or cross-shore winds. The swell heights bounce around 2ft to 4ft, and the energy is mostly in the doldrums (23 to 164). The best of a bad lot might be Friday morning the 17th with glassy conditions, but the swell is a pathetic 2ft. It’s just not happening. This is a long, flat stretch.
Now, let’s talk about the light at the end of the tunnel. The window opens up around Monday the 27th. The morning still looks weak, but Monday afternoon we see a jump to 6ft from the S (energy 720) with a moderate cross-offshore wind. It’s described as marginal, but it’s a step in the right direction.
The standout, and the only real time to get excited, is Tuesday the 28th. The morning session is the pick. We’ve got a solid 5ft swell from the south (energy 406), with a light SW wind keeping it clean. The wind will be light, so it’ll be glassy. This is a solid, clean wave on offer. The conditions are described as “expect good surf conditions,” which is the best we’re gonna see. After that, the wind picks up in the afternoon, wrapping up the session. The swell direction is a little more south than the optimum SSE, but it’s the best combo of size and clean conditions in the whole outlook.
The rest of the week after that is a bit of a mixed bag with some cross-offshore winds and moderate swell in the 4ft to 5ft range, but nothing as clean as that Tuesday morning.
So, there you have it. A long wait for one proper morning. If you’ve got the patience, the 28th is your day. Keep an eye on the forecast, because it’s a long way out, but it’s the only real chance we’ve got.
Rusty.
