The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, but this time in feet and knots. Let’s see what’s cookin’ for Point Judith.
Honestly, the first week is a bit of a bust. You’ve got a long run of small, weak swell with no push. Waves are mostly knee-high or less, wind is all over the place, and the energy is just flat. There’s a glassy moment on Friday morning July 17th with a ripple of swell, but you’d be better off with a float board.
The first real pulse of size comes on Sunday July 19th. Swell jumps to about 6ft from the SSW, but with a short 6-second period. That afternoon the wind goes clean offshore from the WNW at 15 mph. The wave energy hits moderate at 287. It’s not perfect – the short period makes it a bit soft – but it’s clean and the best you’ll see early on.
The clear standout is Monday, July 20th. That morning you’ve got a solid 4ft S swell with a 9-second period and combined energy at 270. The wind is just 3 mph from the WSW, nearly glassy. That’s the day to be out. Clean, chest-high waves with some shape. The afternoon stays clean with a 12 mph cross-off, but morning is the pick.
Then it goes flat and ugly again. From July 21st through the end of the month, it’s a mix of weak, short-period slop and onshore winds. Swell pops up to 6ft on July 23rd, but it’s with a 6-second period and choppy onshore wind. July 28th has 5ft at 9 seconds, but the wind is cross at 12 mph, messing it up.
The only other glimmer is Saturday July 25th afternoon. A 5ft SSE swell with a clean cross-off breeze, but the period is only 6 seconds, so it’ll be lumpy.
So for the best day: Monday morning, July 20th at Lighthouse (Point Judithlighthouse) . Clean 4ft S swell with 9-second period, glassy wind. That’s the one. The reef and point setup will handle that longer period nicely. Crowds are possible, but on a Monday in a lean stretch, you’ll have room. Water temp is about average for July.
Everything else is a grind. If you’re a die-hard, Sunday the 19th afternoon gives you size and offshore wind, but bring your patience. Lock in that Monday.
Rusty.
