Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down the surf outlook for Point Judith. Things are looking real quiet for a long stretch, so don't be in any hurry.
We're starting with a bit of a flat spell. The only spot on the map is Lighthouse, a reef and point. For the first week and a half or so, it's a lot of poor surf conditions. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting under 100 for days. Swell heights are mostly small, under 3ft, with short, weak period swells. The winds are mostly cross-on or cross, keeping things choppy and messy. There's a brief window on the morning of Thursday, July 10th, where conditions clean up with a light cross-off wind, but the swell is tiny at 2ft and the energy is next to nothing. Not worth paddling out for.
That flat, frustrating pattern holds through the weekend and into the next week. A couple of days around mid-July the wind goes clean again, but we're still looking at knee-high slop with weak energy. The water temp is running at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first real glimmer comes on Saturday morning, July 19th. A 3ft S swell with an 8-second period and clean conditions with a light cross-off breeze. The energy bumps up to a moderate level. Still no standout, but the cleanest we've seen.
Then, Monday morning, July 20th, is the one to circle if you're experienced. A 7ft SSW swell rolls in, with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps way up. That's a lot of juice. The catch is a cross-on wind making for choppy conditions. At this size, it's strictly for experts. This is the biggest swell on offer, and the only real pulse in the whole 16-day window, but the wind is the big question mark. It looks promising but it's far out, so don't bank on perfection.
Overall, it's a long stretch of poor to ordinary surf. The surf tends not to stay this flat around here for long, so forecasts might change, but as it stands, you're waiting until July 20th for anything close to a real wave.
Rusty.
