Table - best surf conditions forecast for Lighthouse over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you—it’s gonna be a tough wait. The first real shot at anything decent isn’t until Thursday, July 16th. Before that, we’re looking at a whole lot of nada. Swell is tiny, winds are messy, and the surf just isn’t there. You’ll be staring at flat, bumpy water. Basically, from now until the morning of the 16th, you can leave the board in the shed.
Now, the standout of the whole forecast is Thursday morning, July 16th at Lighthouse (Point Judith). The wind goes glassy, and that’s a rare treat. Swell is a modest 3ft from the SSW, with a short period of 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit soft and crumbly, but that clean, smooth face will make it rideable. The wave energy is weak (87), so don’t expect power, but for a summer wave, it’s the best we’ve got. Water temps are about average for this time of year, so nothing weird going on there.
That same break on Friday morning, July 17th, is also worth a mention. Winds are light and cross-offshore, keeping it clean. You’re looking at 3ft from the SSW again, with the same short period. It’s another small, clean option. The energy is still weak (65). This is a reef and point setup, so it can handle a bit of direction, and the SSE optimum swell direction is not a perfect match, but it’ll work.
After that, things get a bit grim again. The wind swings onshore and the swell jumps up, but it’s all messy. By Saturday, July 18th, we’ve got 5ft to 6ft of SSW swell, but with a strong cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be choppy and blown out. The wave energy gets moderate (217-291), but the quality is poor. This is a beach and reef setup, so with that much wind and chop, it’s looking more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle guys.
The end of the second week, around July 21st and 22nd, sees a bigger swell pulse—over 7ft from the south—but again, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore. The energy gets strong (up to 535), but the conditions are just not there. It’s a lot of power with no shape, so leave that for the experts if they’re desperate. After that, it fades back down to small, clean, but tiny surf by the 25th.
So, to sum it up: your best bet is the glassy morning of Thursday, July 16th at Lighthouse. Friday morning, July 17th is a close second. Everything else is either flat, blown out, or just plain messy.
Rusty.
