The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for the Lighthouse, that reef and point set-up at Point Judith.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week and a half is a tough slog. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing but small, weak, and messy conditions. The first real glimmer of hope doesn't show up until Sunday the 19th, and even then it's just a tease. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing crazy going on there.
The first day worth paddling out is Sunday morning, the 19th. We’ll see a little waist-high swell at 4ft coming out of the SSW. The wind is offshore from the WNW at 12 mph, which is a major positive – it’ll keep the surface clean. The combined energy is still just moderate (163), so don’t expect much push. It’s a start.
Sunday afternoon is where it gets a bit more interesting. The swell bumps up to a fun 5ft from the SSW, and that wind stays offshore from the WNW at 12 mph. The period stretches to 8 seconds, which is a little better, and the energy jumps to moderate (238). The report says to expect good surf conditions, and with those clean offshore winds, this is your best window for a proper session across the whole forecast. The Lighthouse can get crowded sometimes, so get in there early.
From Monday the 20th onward, it’s back to the struggle. The swell drops, the wind shifts onshore or cross-shore, and it’s a whole lot of nothing for days. We get a big spike of energy on Wednesday the 22nd with a 7ft to 8ft SSW swell, and the combined energy gets strong (403 to 859). But that’s paired with a strong breeze and a risk t-storm in the morning, and the wind is cross-off, making it messy. The wave comment says “poor surf conditions” and “marginal surf forecast.” That’s too big for most folks and blown out anyway – more of a challenge than a treat.
The rest of the run through the end of the month and into the 1st of August is just a flat spell. Small, weak, onshore wind, and poor surf. The energy barely cracks triple digits, and most days are in the low double digits. There’s a real gap here from the 20th of July all the way through to the end of the forecast.
So, to wrap it up: forget the first week. Your one true standout is Sunday afternoon, the 19th of July. Clean offshore wind, a fun waist-to-chest high SSW swell, and the best conditions of the whole 16-day run. Don’t sleep on it, because after that, it’s a long wait.
