The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's sift through the next couple of weeks for the Point Judith area. We’re looking at a real slow start, so patience is the name of the game.
The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off. We’ve got a run of days with tiny, weak swell and a mix of onshore or cross-shore winds that just aren’t doing us any favours. The water temperature is sitting at 70°, which is dead average for this time of year, so that’s one thing you don’t have to worry about. From Sunday the 23rd all the way through to Friday the 4th of September, the wave energy is barely registering – mostly in the double digits with a few weak triple-digit days – and the wave comment is a straight-up “poor surf conditions.” That’s a solid 13-day stretch of small, messy, or just plain unappealing surf. You’ll see a few mornings with glassy or clean conditions, but with the swell height barely scraping 3 ft, there’s just nothing to ride.
There is one bright spot, but it’s a long way off. The standout comes on the 5th of September. The Lighthouse (Point Judith) finally wakes up. We’re looking at a solid 4 ft of SSE groundswell with a period of 13 seconds, packing a punch of moderate to strong wave energy (448). That’s a proper groundswell, and it’s coming in from the SE, which is very close to the optimum SSE direction. The wind is forecast to be from the WNW, which is directly offshore and clean. This is the window to circle on your calendar. Saturday morning the 5th is the pick, with a moderate offshore breeze and clean conditions. The afternoon holds steady too. This is the only true standout in the entire 16-day run, so make it count if you can. The swell is a solid size for intermediates, but it’s not a beginner wave.
