The Lowdown
Alright, let’s see what’s happening at Lighthouse (Point Judith). It’s a reef and point setup that needs a good southerly swell to wake up, and right now, it’s been pretty sleepy. The water’s at 70°, which is normal for this time of year.
The first few days are a total bust. Friday the 17th through Saturday the 19th are flat to tiny, with weak, short-period windswell and messy winds. The combined energy is just 7 or 22, so don’t even think about paddling out.
We get a little bump on Sunday the 19th afternoon. Swell hits 3ft from the SSW, period around 7 seconds, and the wind goes offshore from the WNW at 12 mph. That’s clean, but the wave quality is just ordinary. The energy is only 120, so it’s weak. Not a standout.
Monday the 20th morning is glassy—wind from the SSE at just 3 mph—with a small 3ft S swell, period 8 seconds. It’s clean, but energy is low at 87. Fine for a longboard, but nothing special.
The big news is Wednesday the 22nd into Thursday the 23rd. On Wednesday afternoon, a solid 8ft S swell rolls in with a 10 second period, and the wind is cross-off from the SW at 16 mph. The combined energy hits 1902, which is very strong. This is a powerful groundswell, but it’s over 8ft, so expert-only. The reef and point setup will handle the long period well, but crowds are “sometimes,” so expect company. That’s the biggest wave of the window.
Thursday the 23rd morning is a good follow-up: 5ft from the S, 8 seconds, with clean offshore wind from the west at 6 mph. Energy is 363, moderate, and the conditions are clean. That’s a solid day for intermediate surfers.
After that, it drops off again. From Friday the 24th onward, it’s back to small, weak, and messy. There’s a glassy morning on Sunday the 26th with 3ft, but energy is only 108. Another glassy window on the morning of the 31st with 2ft, but again, nothing to write home about.
So, the standout is Wednesday the 22nd afternoon for the big, powerful swell, but that’s for experts. The best bet for most folks is Thursday the 23rd morning—clean, manageable size, and decent energy. After that, it’s a long stretch of small, poor conditions through the end of July and into August.
