The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Overall, it’s a quiet stretch for The Wall. The water temp is sitting at a pretty normal 66°, which is about average for this time of year, so you won’t need any extra rubber. The problem is, there’s just not a lot of push from the ocean for most of the period. Swell energy is weak for the first week, with combined energy values mostly under 100 (55, 82, 49). That’s small, weak stuff. The second week picks up a little, but it’s nothing to get excited about. There’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations, so patience is the name of the game.
The first real standout window comes on Monday morning, August 24th. The swell is small at 1 ft from the SE, but the period jumps to 12 seconds – that’s a bit of groundswell energy, and combined energy is 62. More importantly, the wind is WNW at 9 mph and offshore, meaning the surface will be clean and glassy. It’s surfable, but just barely. The same goes for the afternoon, with a 1 ft SE swell at 11 seconds and offshore wind. Not big, but if you’re desperate for a clean little wave, this is your best bet.
After that, it’s back to small, choppy, and onshore conditions until the next brief window on Saturday, August 29th. Both morning and afternoon see 2 ft SE swell, with offshore WSW wind (9 mph) keeping things clean. The swell period is short at 7-8 seconds, so it’s weak, but at least it’s rideable. The following morning, Sunday, August 30th, is glassy with NW wind at 3 mph and 2 ft SE swell – that’s about as clean as it gets in this outlook, but still tiny.
The only real uptick in energy comes on Thursday, August 27th afternoon, when the swell jumps to 7 ft from the ENE with a combined energy of 385 – that’s moderate. But the period is only 6 seconds, and the wind is S at 12 mph cross-shore, making it choppy and messy. That one’s more for the experts, and honestly, it’s not worth the paddle with the wind all over it. The Wall isn’t a reef or point, so short-period wind swell like that will just be lumpy closeouts.
For the very end of the forecast, Tuesday, September 1st sees a bit of clean surf again: 3 ft ESE swell with 8-second period and cross-offshore SW wind (6-9 mph). Combined energy is 176, so there’s a little more push, but still small. It’s the best of the second week, but only just.
All in all, if you’re a beginner, the small clean days on the 24th, 29th, and 30th are your friend. If you’re an expert, the 27th might have some size but it’s a mess. No big standouts, just a few windows of clean, weak surf.
Rusty.
