The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what The Wall’s got for us over the next couple weeks.
First off, the first week is pretty flat. Swell’s tiny—mostly 1 to 2 feet from the SE or ESE—and the energy’s weak, with combined swell energy sitting between 28 and 95. Winds are often cross-on or onshore, and it’s labeled “poor surf” most of the time. Nothing to get excited about.
There’s a little window on Wednesday afternoon, 19th August, when the wind goes glassy and the swell bumps to 3 feet from the SE at 7 seconds. Combined energy’s 95 (still weak), but that glassy wind, mate—that’s clean. Surfable but ordinary.
The second week tries to build a bit. By Thursday 27th August, combined energy hits 141 (moderate) with 2 feet from the ESE at 12 seconds. Longer period, hinting at groundswell, but the wind’s cross-on from the NE at 12 mph, so it’s choppy. Not great.
Friday 28th August sees the swell rise to 4 feet in the morning and 4 feet in the afternoon from the SSE, with combined energy of 185 (moderate). More push, but period drops to 6 seconds—short and crumbly—and winds are cross or cross-on from the S and SE. Messy conditions, and honestly, with that setup and a beach break, it might be better for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Then Saturday 29th August morning is the pick of the whole outlook. Swell’s 3 feet from the SE at 9 seconds, combined energy 150 (moderate), and we get a clean cross-off breeze from the WSW at 9 mph. Offshore wind. That’s clean, rideable surf at The Wall. Crowds can show up here sometimes, but for a clear morning with offshore breeze, it’s your best chance.
After that, there’s a gap of nearly a week with no real surf. Monday 31st August morning has a clean cross-off wind and 4 feet from the ESE at 6 seconds (combined energy 107, moderate), but the period’s too short for good shape.
And on Tuesday 1st September afternoon, the wind goes glassy again with 4 feet from the NE at 6 seconds (combined energy 184, moderate). Glassy is gold, but that short period means it’ll be lumpy and fast. Worth a look if you’re keen.
Best bet is Saturday 29th August morning at The Wall—clean, cross-off winds, rideable 3 feet SE swell. Not a big day, but the cleanest of the bunch.
Rusty.
