The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about The Wall.
We’ve got a long stretch ahead, and I’ll be straight with you—for the first week or so, you’re better off staying on the beach or tinkering with your gear. The opening run from Wednesday the 15th right through to the 24th is pretty much a write-off for anything even vaguely decent. That’s ten days of tiny, weak swell and poor conditions. You’ll see a whole lot of nothing worthwhile, just small wind-slapped dribble from the southeast with next to no energy. The combined swell numbers are low, mostly in the teens to fifties, and there’s nothing to get excited about.
A glimmer appears on the afternoon of Tuesday the 21st. The wind goes offshore from the west, which is a big plus for clean face on the waves. Swell bumps up to 4ft from the SSE, but the period is a short, jumbled 5 seconds, so the waves will be soft and a bit fat. The combined energy is still low, just 87. It’s surfable in the sense you won’t be fighting for scraps, but you’ll be working for every wave. The Wall is a spot that needs a decent push; this won’t be one to remember.
From the 22nd, it gets a touch better in energy terms but stays small. The morning of Wednesday the 22nd has a 3ft swell from the SSE at 10 seconds, with a gentle offshore wind from the west. Energy climbs to 125, so there’s a bit more push behind it. The wave quality is “ordinary” but clean. This might be your best bet if you're desperate for a paddle. It’s still very small, but it’s the cleanest it will be for a while.
Then we hit a bit more activity toward the end of the month. The morning of Thursday the 30th has the biggest combined energy we see in the whole run—223—with a swell of 3ft from the ESE at 11 seconds. The wind is light and cross-shore from the south. This is a longer-period swell, which means it’ll offer a bit more shape, especially at The Wall’s setup. The crowd factor is "sometimes," so you might have company, but it’s not a circus. This is the standout of the run: a better quality, cleaner option than anything else, but it’s still only a small wave. Don’t expect to get barrel-d.
Overall, this is a flat spell with a couple of very subdued, barely surfable windows. If you’re an absolute die-hard, the 30th morning is your only real shot at something that feels like surfing. For everyone else? Wait for the next swell.
Rusty.
