The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's talk about the next couple of weeks at The Wall.
First off, the water is sitting at 64°F, which is a bit colder than what we’d normally expect for this time of year. That anomaly is just over a degree, so you’ll feel that slight chill compared to the usual.
Right now, there’s pretty much nothing doing. The first few days are dead flat, with tiny, weak windswell in the 2ft range and short periods. Mostly messy cross-off or cross-on breezes, and not a single wave worth paddling for. You’re looking at a blank run from now through Tuesday morning.
Things finally start to change on Wednesday morning, 22 July. That’s when we get a bit of life. The swell jumps to 5ft from the SSE, with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy hits 488 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a light cross-off from the SSW, keeping things pretty clean. The afternoon holds similar size at 6ft, a little more energy (496), and still a light cross-off. This is the best on offer for the whole outlook – not huge, but clean, and it’s the only real push of energy we get. For an intermediate crew, this is a go.
Thursday morning, 23 July, still has some decent leftover swell at 4ft from the SE, with a 9-second period and a moderate offshore from the W. That’s nice and clean. The afternoon drops off a bit in size and energy, but it’s still surfable.
After that, we’re back to small, weak stuff. Friday and Saturday mornings have glassy conditions but only 2ft to 3ft of swell, and the energy is low (84 and 54). You can get a little knee-high wave if you’re desperate, but nothing to write home about.
The rest of the run into early August stays tiny – 1ft to 2ft, with short periods, and mostly onshore or cross-on winds. There’s no real standout window after that Wednesday-Thursday burst. The crowds at The Wall are “sometimes” an issue, but with this kind of small surf, it won’t be packed.
If you’re a kite surfer, the windier, choppier afternoons later in the period might look more interesting than paddle surfing. For the rest of us, the best bet is to aim for Wednesday 22 July and Thursday 23 July – that’s your window.
Rusty.
