Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming down the line for our local stretch.
To be straight with you, this is a quiet run. The first week is mostly flat and messy, nothing really worth paddling out for. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny swell and funky wind, so don’t get your hopes up too early. The best chance for a wave comes mid-month, but even then it’s not world-class.
We kick off Saturday July 4th with barely a bump. Swell sits at 1 ft from the SE with a period of 9 seconds, but the wind is offshore from the WNW at 6 mph, so the water is clean. Problem is, there’s no energy (combined energy only 23), and the wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. That theme runs through Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday – with the swell staying tiny or turning into a choppy, wind-affected mess. Tuesday July 7th sees the wind cranking from the E at 16 mph and heavy rain, swell jumps to 4 ft but the period drops to a horrible 5 seconds. That’s just wash.
Wednesday July 8th morning is the first time we see a pulse worth a mention. Swell hits 5 ft from the ESE with an 8-second period and combined energy of 338 – that’s moderate energy, finally. The wind is cross from the N at 6 mph, so not perfect but surfable. The wave comment calls it “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions,” and the score backs that up as a 1 out of 10. It’s a short-period swell, so the shape won’t be great, but for the Wall it’s the best we’ll see all week. Still, don’t expect any standouts.
Thursday July 9th morning offers a brief window with 3 ft from the SE, cross-off wind from the WSW at 9 mph, and combined energy of 78. The comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s about it. After that, Friday through to Sunday July 19th is a ghost town – flat, tiny, or blown out. The swell rarely breaks 2 ft, and the combined energy stays in the pathetic 10-45 range for days on end. There’s a glassy moment on Saturday July 11th morning with NW wind at 3 mph, but the swell is only 1 ft from the SE – a glassy lake, not surf.
The only other blink of life is Wednesday July 15th morning: 3 ft from the SSE with a 6-second period, cross-off wind from the SSW at 6 mph, and combined energy of 56. Again, “surfable but very ordinary.”
Bottom line: if you’re determined, Wednesday July 8th morning at The Wall is your shot. Swell of 5 ft from the ESE, period 8 seconds, moderate energy (338), and cross wind. It’s not clean, but it’s the biggest pulse in the whole 16-day window. For the rest… you’re better off checking the wind forecast for a kite session, because this stretch is flat.
Rusty.
