The Lowdown
Hey, it’s Rusty. Let me break this down for you over the next couple weeks.
For the first week or so, the surf is just about dead. We’re looking at small, weak swells with messy wind. The wave energy is low, barely registering. From Tuesday the 14th through to Sunday the 19th, it’s all poor conditions. Not worth your time.
At Ruggles, it’s a reef and point break. It likes a south-east swell. For most of the first week, we’ve got short-period swells from the SSW and S, only 1 to 3 feet, with periods of 5 to 7 seconds. The wind is cross or cross-shore, making it lumpy. Total washout.
The first sign of life comes on Monday the 20th. We get a south swell pushing to about 4 feet, with an 8-second period. The energy hits 161 – finally some moderate juice. The morning wind is a cross-off from the west, so it’ll be clean. It’s just ordinary, but it’s a start.
Tuesday the 21st is similar – 3 feet from the south, 8 seconds, with light offshore wind from the northwest. Clean, but nothing special.
The best bet in this whole run is Wednesday the 22nd. The swell is from the SSE at 3 feet, with a 9-second period. That’s a touch longer. The combined energy is 129. The wind is a cross-off from the NNE, so it should look smooth. The direction is close to what this break wants, so it should wrap in decently.
We also get a little window on Monday the 27th. Late in the day, there’s 3-foot south swell, 8 seconds, and it goes glassy. Might be a surprise clean wave, but the energy is only moderate at 116. Wednesday the 29th morning also shows glassy conditions with a 3-foot south swell, but again, it’s small.
For a standout, it’s the Wednesday the 22nd morning. Swell around 3 feet from the SSE, a 9-second period, and clean wind. The crowd can be “sometimes” here, so you might see a few heads, but it won’t be packed.
Water temp on Tuesday the 14th is about 70°F, with the anomaly a little above average. Nothing crazy.
So, the first week is a dud. The second week has a few clean, small windows, with Wednesday the 22nd being your best shot. It’s not big, but it’s the best on offer.
Rusty.
