Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ruggles over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks at Ruggles. It's a fairly quiet start, but there might be a little something to keep an eye on if you're patient.
Right now, there's almost nothing happening. The surf is tiny and messy for the first few days, with weak, short-period swell from the S and SSW. We're talking wave heights around 1ft to 2ft and combined energy readings sitting below 100 – it's all pretty powerless. The winds are mostly cross or cross-on, which means choppy conditions. There's really nothing worth paddling out for through the 11th to the 13th.
We get a slight flicker on Tuesday the 14th. The morning brings a clean look with a light cross-offshore breeze from the WSW, and while the swell is still only 2ft, the energy bumps up to 32. It’s still not great, though. By the afternoon, the swell picks up to 4ft from the SSW with a combined energy of 121 (moderate), but the wind swings cross-shore and creates a chop. It's still marked as poor.
The first real glimmer of hope arrives on Wednesday the 15th. The morning shows a 4ft SSW swell (energy 180) with a clean, gentle offshore breeze from the WNW. That'll tidy things up nicely. The waves will be small but clean, good for a longboard or a funboard. The afternoon is smaller and cleaner again, but way less energy.
After that, we get a string of tiny days with clean conditions but hardly any swell until we hit the 21st. On Tuesday the 21st, the swell comes up – by afternoon we're seeing 7ft from the SSE with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 496 (strong). That's a solid pulse, but the wind is directly onshore (SSE), which will make it a crumbly, messy affair at this reef and point break. It gets a zero score for a reason – the wind ruins it.
The standout in this whole outlook, if you can call it that, is Friday the 24th. The morning is clean with a 4ft swell from the S (energy 186) and a cross-offshore breeze from the NE. The afternoon holds similar size and a slightly longer period of 9 seconds, still clean with an energy of 190. It’s not huge, but the conditions will be the best we’ve seen. This point can handle that size and direction nicely, and the offshore angle will make for some tidy, rippable walls. Crowds are listed as "sometimes", so you might have some company, but it won't be a zoo.
Then on Saturday the 25th, the swell jumps to 5ft (energy 764 – strong) in the morning. That's a bigger, more powerful swell, but the wind is cross-shore from the NE, creating a bit of chop. The period is 9 seconds, so it's a groundswell, but at a beach-and-point setup, it might be a little lully. It's only a "marginal" forecast, but it could be the most size we see. For experts, it's worth a look.
Water temp is around average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
So, if you're after the best shot, I'd pencil in Friday the 24th for the cleanest, most user-friendly waves. The 25th has more power, but the wind is a little off. The rest of the run is pretty bleak. A seven-day stretch of nothing followed by a few iffy days isn't uncommon for this area.
Rusty.
