The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Ruggles over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. We’ve got a long gap with nothing worth paddling out for. From now until the morning of the 29th of August, it’s a write-off. Tiny, weak, bumpy – just leave your board in the car.
The first real chance comes on Saturday the 29th of August. It’s not epic, but it’s the pick of the litter. We’ve got a gentle offshore wind from the NW, cleaning things right up. Swell is coming from the S, about 2ft to 3ft with a period around 7 seconds. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 80-88. For Ruggles (a reef and point setup), that S swell is a decent direction, and the light offshore wind will make it glassy. It’s surfable, but keep your expectations in check – it’s ordinary at best, not a standout.
After that, the window slams shut again. The morning of the 30th of August looks glassy, but the swell is tiny at 2ft. The rest of the month and into early September is just a mix of tiny waves, cross-shore wind, and choppy conditions. Nothing to get excited about.
There is one blip way out. On the morning of the 3rd of September, we see a pulse of moderate energy (257) with a 5ft swell from the SSW. That’s the biggest swell in the whole run, but the period is a short 6 seconds – so it’s going to be a bit lumpy and disorganized. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNE, so it’ll be clean, but at 5ft it’s still manageable for intermediates. Still, it’s far out, so don’t book your trip yet – forecasts change.
Honestly, the best thing about this whole outlook is the Saturday 29th session, and even that’s just a “meh, I’m bored” kind of surf. For the rest, you’re better off finding something else to do.
Rusty.
