Table - best surf conditions forecast for Playa Motones over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this next stretch is a tough one. We’ve got a steady run of east-northeast wind that just won’t quit, and it’s going to mess up the face of almost every wave that comes through. The swell is small and weak, and the conditions are just not cooperating. Don’t get your hopes up for anything clean, but let’s walk through it day by day.
The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for quality surf. There are no standouts, no hidden gems. It’s all at Playa Motones, a reef break that’s consistent and exposed to the north, but the wind is the enemy here. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
Starting Monday the 13th, we’ve got a weak easterly swell around 4ft with a short, weak period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 113 (weak), and the wind is a cross-onshore breeze from the ENE at 12 mph. It’s choppy and messy. The afternoon actually gets a bit bigger – 6ft – but the wind picks up to 16 mph, so it’s just more of the same slop. Both sessions are a zero out of ten.
Tuesday the 14th morning is a little smaller again at 4ft, but the wind is still cross-on from the NE at 9 mph. It’s fairly choppy and not worth a paddle. The afternoon gets ugly: 6ft swell but a strong 25 mph cross-onshore wind creating a total mess. Hard pass.
Wednesday the 15th through to Sunday the 19th is a repetitive cycle. Morning swells between 4ft and 4ft, afternoon swells between 5ft and 6ft. The wind is always cross-onshore from the ENE or NE, 12 to 22 mph. The combined energy never cracks 300 (weak to moderate), and the period is stuck at 6 to 7 seconds. It’s all poor surf, choppy, lumpy, and cross-shore chop. No relief.
The second week, from Monday the 20th to Tuesday the 28th, doesn’t get any better. Same story: 4ft to 7ft of easterly or east-northeast swell, period still a short 5 to 8 seconds, and the wind is relentless – cross-onshore or cross-shore, 12 to 19 mph. The combined energy occasionally nudges into the 200s (still moderate), but the quality is just poor. On the 21st afternoon we see the biggest swell of the period at 7ft, but with a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind, it’s just a blown-out, lumpy mess that’s only for the hardcore or the kite surfers.
Honestly, there’s not a single morning or afternoon in this whole 16-day window that’s worth chasing. It’s a blank run. The reef is consistent, but with this wind, it doesn’t matter. You’re better off waiting for a change in the forecast.
Stay tuned, and keep your board waxed for when it turns.
Rusty.
