The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for this spot. It’s a quiet stretch ahead, so I’ll keep it real with you.
We’re looking at Cueva del Indio, a reef setup that’s inconsistent and only really works when the wind and swell line up just right. Over the next two weeks, the honest truth is there’s almost nothing worth paddling out for. The entire forecast is a long, frustrating gap of poor surf conditions.
From Thursday the 6th of August all the way through to Monday the 17th of August, it’s a write-off. The wind is locked in from the ENE, blowing cross-on or cross, and it’s strong – 15 mph to 25 mph. That’s a fresh to strong breeze, churning up a lumpy, choppy mess. The swell is coming from the NE to ENE, but the period is short, between 6 and 8 seconds. The combined swell energy is mostly weak to moderate at best, ranging from 64 to 242. It’s just not doing anything for the reef. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild there.
The only tiny glimmer comes on Monday the 17th of August in the afternoon. The wind shifts to a light SE breeze, 6 mph, going cross-offshore. That’s a major positive—clean conditions. The swell is still from the ENE at 6 ft, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 496. That’s moderate energy and the cleanest look we get. But here’s the catch: the swell direction is ENE, and this break needs the swell from the north for its optimum. So it’s not a true standout. It’s a rare, inconsistent spot that rarely breaks, so this brief window is notable, but it’s only a 2 out of 10. For a surfer, it’s a maybe, not a go.
After that, it’s back to the same old story: onshore wind and poor surf until the 21st of August.
Honestly, kite surfers might have a better time with the strong cross-shore winds and the 5 ft+ swell, but for paddle surfing, this is a tough outlook. The forecast can always change, but for now, leave the board in the van.
Rusty.
