The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for the local zone.

Honestly, I’ve gotta lay it out plain – this 16-day window is a real bummer. The only break we’re looking at is Los Tubos, a reef setup that’s fairly consistent, but the wind is just a problem. We’ve got a steady cross-onshore breeze from the ENE, gusting up to 22–25 mph at times, and it’s wrecking the surface. The swell is coming from the wrong direction, too – straight out of the ENE – when this spot really wants it from the NNE. It’s a mismatch from the start.

The whole early period, from Tuesday the 4th through the first week, is flat and choppy. Swell heights are mostly 3 ft to 4 ft, with short periods of 5–8 seconds, and combined wave energy is weak – mostly under 100. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing special.

Things do build a bit in the second week. Around Thursday the 13th, the swell starts to push up, and by Friday the 14th we’re looking at 6 ft to 6 ft of ENE swell with 7–8 second periods. The energy jumps into the 300s, so there’s some real power behind it. But that ENE wind is still blowing 22 mph cross-onshore, making it a messy, lumpy mess. This is looking more like a kite-surfing day than a clean paddling session.

If I had to pick one window, it’d be the morning of Saturday the 15th of August. Swell is still solid at 6 ft with 8-second period and energy at 391 – the highest of the whole run. The wind is still cross-onshore but a little lighter at 16 mph. It’s gonna be rough, but for experts who don’t mind the chop, there might be a few workable walls. Beginners, stay away – 6 ft is too big for you, and the conditions are ugly.

No standout session here. The whole 16 days is a stretch of poor quality. The wind just won’t swing, and the swell direction is wrong. It’s a long gap of nothing good. But hang in there – it usually doesn’t stay this poor for long, and forecasts can shift.

Rusty.
