The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s cut through the noise and talk about what’s actually happening at Domes (Rincon).
Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, grim stretch of small, weak, and generally poor surf. The first week is basically a write-off. From Monday the 13th right through to Sunday the 19th, the swell is tiny, the energy is basically non-existent, with the combined swell energy sitting below 100 (weak energy) for every single session. The wave heights are barely a ripple, and the swell direction is a messy, inconsistent NE/NNE that doesn’t line up with the break’s preferred NNW optimum. On top of that, the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, chopping up what little is there. It’s not a surf window; it’s a tanning-and-watching window.
The only flicker of life comes in the second week. We finally get a couple of days that are worth paddling out for. The standout is Tuesday the 21st of July. The morning is absolutely glassy with a clean 2ft of NE swell, and while the energy is still low (66), by the afternoon things start to actually look surfable. The wind goes light cross-off, the swell climbs to 3ft, and the combined energy ticks up to 66 – still weak, but it’s the best we’ve got. It’s not a classic Domes day, but it’s clean and you’ll get a few fun little runners.
The other session to circle is Wednesday the 22nd of July. Again, we’re looking at a clean afternoon with 3ft of NE swell and a combined energy of 73 (weak). The wind is light and cross-off, so the waves will be clean. Water temperature is running at about 84°F with a 1°F anomaly, so it’s around average for the time of year – nothing wild, just your usual warm July water.
After that, the surf drops off a cliff again. The last week of the outlook is a desert. From Thursday the 23rd right through to the end, we’re back to flat spells, zero energy, and onshore winds. It’s a real shame because the break is consistent and can handle swell, but there’s just no energy in the water.
So, don’t expect much. If you’re desperate, the afternoon of Tuesday the 21st or Wednesday the 22nd is your best bet. It’s small, it’s clean, and it’s just about surfable. Bring a groveller.
Rusty.
