The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you—right now, the surf forecast for our region is looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch ahead with barely a ripple worth paddling for.
The only spot on the radar is Domes (Rincon), and it’s a classic point break that’s generally consistent. The water temperature is sitting at a warm 85°F , which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
But here’s the bad news: for the entire 16-day window, the surf is flat to tiny. The first real glimmer doesn’t show up until Monday afternoon, August 24th, where we might see some surfable waves, but they’ll be very ordinary. Swell is coming from the NE at a tiny 3 ft with a short period of just 6 seconds, and the energy is weak at 66 on the scale. The wind goes glassy that afternoon, which is a major positive, meaning the surface will be clean, but with that little push, it’s barely worth the paddle.
After that, it’s back to a run of poor surf conditions through the rest of August and into early September. There’s a bit more energy showing up around Wednesday, September 2nd, with a 1 ft swell from the ENE and a very long period of 14 seconds, energy reading 58. That’s a proper groundswell, so it could produce some long, clean lines on the point, but the size is still minimal. The wind stays light and cross-off, keeping it clean, but honestly, this is a whisper, not a roar.
There is no standout swell in this forecast. The best on offer is that Monday afternoon glass-off on the 24th, purely for the clean conditions, and maybe the long-period pulse on the 2nd of September for the patient surfer who wants to sit on a board and watch the horizon. But crowd wise, Domes gets busy often, so even when it’s small, expect company.
If you’re desperate for a paddle, the glassy windows are your only friend here. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but this blank run looks pretty locked in for now.
Rusty.
