The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m giving it to you straight from the beach. The next couple of weeks here at Domes (Rincon) are a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry stretch of tiny, weak surf. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for anything worth paddling out for. The water is sitting at a warm 84°, which is pretty average for the time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s in our favor.
Right from the start, Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are a bust. We’re talking ankle-snappers at 1ft to 1ft from the north and northeast, with periods around 6-7 seconds – that’s just windswill. The wave energy is pathetic, barely hitting 23 (combined energy). Friday morning does go glassy, but it’s on a 1ft NE swell. You could probably lie on your board and not get wet.
The weekend (18th-19th) is the same story. Saturday morning is glassy but on a 1ft NE swell. Sunday morning sees a slight bump to 2ft, still from the NE with a 6-second period, and the energy is just 34 (combined energy). It’s glassy, but it’s not surf. The afternoons are all risk of thunderstorms and choppy cross-shore winds.
We drag through the next week (20th-26th). The swell never gets above 3ft, and when it does hit that on Thursday the 23rd afternoon, the wave energy finally climbs to 103 (moderate energy), but it’s a 3ft NE swell with a 7-second period. That’s a messy, short-period windswell, and it’s coming with a 9 mph north cross-onshore wind and a choppy surface. By Saturday the 25th morning, we see a glimmer of hope with a glassy 3ft NE swell, and the energy is 65 (combined energy). The notes say “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s the most optimistic thing we’ve got, and it’s still a 1 out of 10. It’s a tiny, weak wave.
The last few days (27th-31st) are a complete desert. The swell disappears, the energy drops to zero, and we’re left with flat, clean afternoons or glassy mornings with nothing to ride. The best you can hope for is a 3ft NE swell on Thursday the 30th morning, but it’s cross-shore and weak.
Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. This is a dead run for Domes. The setup is a point break, which is usually reliable, but there’s simply no energy coming through. This is just a normal blank period for the area. The forecasts can change, but right now, leave the boards in the car and take a walk. The only thing on offer is a tan.
Rusty.
