The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Alright, let’s be straight up—this stretch ain’t gonna get the heart pumping. We’re looking at a 16-day run at Domes (Rincon), and honestly, the surf is flat to tiny for the bulk of it. There’s a solid gap from now until the 27th of August where you’re basically chasing dribble. The first real nod comes on the 27th, but even then, it’s nothing to write home about.
The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Friday the 21st of August through to Wednesday the 26th—forget it. Swell heights are mostly 0.3 ft to 2 ft, with weak combined energy (12 to 50), and the wind is a mixed bag of cross, cross-off, and glassy at times, but the waves are just too small. Sunday morning the 23rd is glassy and calm, but the swell is only 1 ft. It’s a paddle at best.
Thursday the 27th of August morning is where things get slightly interesting. We’ve got a 2 ft swell from the NE, period 6 seconds, and the combined energy is 63—still weak, but it’s the most we’ve seen. The wind is light cross-off from the NE, making it clean. The rating says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and I gotta agree. It’s a small, weak NE windswell, but it’s clean and it’s something. That’s the standout of the whole run, and it’s a low bar.
Saturday the 29th of August morning sees a 3 ft NE swell, period 7 seconds, energy 89, with glassy conditions. Again, it’s tiny, but it’s clean and the biggest of the run. If you’re desperate, that’s your other window.
After that, from the 30th of August through to the 5th of September, we’re back to dribble—0.3 ft to 2 ft, weak energy, and only occasional glassy pockets. The 4th of September morning has a 2 ft NE swell with glassy conditions, but it’s still poor surf.
So what’s the call? The only real option is Thursday the 27th of August morning, or maybe Saturday the 29th morning if you’re keen on a tiny, clean wave. Neither is a standout—just the least bad of a flat spell. Crowds are often at Domes, so expect company on those small windows.
Keep an eye on the forecasts, but right now, this is a week of dawn patrols with a lot of sitting around.
