The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, quiet period with hardly any swell to speak of. The first real chance of anything surfable doesn’t show up until Saturday, July 25th, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. For the most part, we’re staring at a dry spell of over a week with very little on offer.
The only spot we’ve got to look at is Domes (Rincon). It’s a consistent point break that’s best on a true NNW swell, but we’re not seeing that. The water temp is sitting at 84°F which is about 2°F warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’s a bit bath-like but not unheard of.
The first day that’s even worth a mention is Saturday, July 25th, in the morning. We’ll see a tiny pulse of 3 ft NE swell with a 7-second period. The combined energy is weak at only 81 (weak energy). The wind is light and cross-offshore, which will keep it clean. It’s surfable, but forgettable. The afternoon drops off to nothing.
After that, it’s back to the same story: tiny waves, poor conditions, and a lot of glassy mornings with next to no energy. The combined energy values are mostly in the teens and twenties, which is basically flat. You’ll see a few mornings with glassy conditions, like Wednesday, July 30th morning, with a calm wind and 2 ft of NE swell, but the energy is only 19 (weak energy). It’s not going to get you wet in any meaningful way.
Look, the one ray of hope, and it’s a long way out, is Sunday, August 2nd. The afternoon shows a 2 ft NE swell with a 5-second period and glassy conditions, with combined energy of 37 (weak energy). It’s still small, but it’s the only time in the whole window where the wind might actually give you a clean little wave. Don’t get your hopes up too high though – this is a long-range call and the swell is tiny.
In short, if you’re desperate for a paddle, you might find a knee-high ripple on the 25th or the 2nd, but this is a classic case of “looks better for a flat-water paddle than a surf.” The lengthy gap with no real recommendations is normal for this area when the swell directions are all wrong.
Rusty.
