The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into what’s coming our way.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking flat. There’s no real surf to speak of. We’ve got a long quiet spell stretching from now, all the way through to around the 24th of August, with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The swell energy is tiny, with numbers like 16, 20, 11 – all weak, barely a whisper. A few windows of glassy mornings (like Wednesday the 19th, Thursday the 20th, and Saturday the 22nd) will make the ocean look pretty, but with waves barely cracking 1 ft, it’s a flat day for the log. Even the spots that have the best exposure aren’t seeing anything.

Now, if you’re an absolute beginner just wanting to sit in the water, the Wednesday 19th morning at Domes (Rincon) could be a laugh since it’s glassy with a tiny 0.7 ft swell from the NNE. But honestly, it’s not surfable in any real sense.

The pattern finally tries to shift on Sunday the 23rd in the afternoon. We get a hint of life – about 3 ft from the NE with a period of 6 seconds, and cross-offshore winds (ENE at 3 mph) that will clean it up. The combined energy bumps up to 60, which at least shows there’s some pulse, but it’s still weak. The waves will be small and gutless, but it’s the first sign of movement in a very long time.

The real standout, and honestly the only one on offer, hits us on Tuesday the 25th of August. The morning sees a solid jump: a 5 ft NE swell with a period of 6 seconds, and combined energy of 174 (moderate). That’s a proper bump. The wind is cross (NE 16 mph), so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but the size is there. By the afternoon, the swell holds at 5 ft with a better period of 7 seconds and the energy even ticks up to 208. It’s still cross-shore wind (NE 12 mph), but the size is the biggest of the entire forecast. For a point break setup like Domes, a bigger NE swell matched with a NNW optimum direction means it’ll be hitting the bank. This is a wedge of swell that will produce some proper, rideable waves. This Tuesday the 25th is your best bet by a long shot. It’s big enough to be fun for intermediates and above, but with that cross-wind and moderate energy, it won’t be crazy. Just be ready for the size.

After that bump, things fade back down through the rest of that week and into the start of September, with tiny 0.7 ft to 2 ft NE pulses and mostly glassy mornings, but no real juice. The long-range stuff for the 1st and 2nd of September shows some weird little 0.7 ft pulses with a longer 11-second period, but that’s still nothing to ride.

So, the story is simple: a long, flat gap, then one solid day on the 25th. That’s it.

Stay tuned,
Rusty
