The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be real about the next couple of weeks. The surf is going to be tough to find for a long stretch. Don't plan anything big.
Looking at the whole 16 days, we've got a serious dry spell. From July 18th right through to July 24th, it's a total bust. The wind is all wrong, and the waves are tiny and weak. The energy numbers are all in the double digits, as low as 33 – that's basically nothing. You’d be wasting your time.
The first time we can even think about it is on Saturday morning, July 25th. Domes (Rincon) might just be ridable. It's a point break, consistent, and good for beginners. The water is a warm 84°, which is a degree warmer than normal – feels like a bath. That morning we're looking at a tiny 3ft swell from the NE, with a short period of 7 seconds. The wind is light and cross-offshore, making it clean. The combined energy is weak at 77. It's not going to be pumping, but it's the only option. The ideal swell is from the NNW, so this NE direction is a bit off. Crowds are often a problem here, so expect some company.
Sunday morning, July 26th is pretty much the same. Domes again, with 3ft of NE swell at 7 seconds. The wind is glassy – totally flat calm – which is a big plus for clean waves. The energy is 72. It's a very ordinary, small wave.
Then we hit another dead zone. From Sunday afternoon, July 26th, all the way through to the end of the month and into early August, it goes flat. The energy drops to single digits or zero. By Thursday morning, July 30th, the energy bumps up to 87, with 3ft from the ENE and an 8-second period, with glassy winds. It's still just surfable, not great.
The last two mornings, August 1st and 2nd, are nothing to write home about. Glassy on the 1st with 2ft of NE swell, but the energy is only 21. On the 2nd, it's even smaller.
So, what's the best of a bad lot? Honestly, there's no real standout. If I had to pick one, it's the Saturday morning, July 25th at Domes. It's the first clean window with a little bit of energy. The glassy conditions on the Sunday morning, July 26th are also worth a look for the cleanest surface, even if the wave is small. It's a long wait for almost nothing, but that's the way it shakes out sometimes.
Rusty.
