The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you: it's a tough run ahead for Domes. We’ve got a solid 16-day window, and right now it’s looking like a real dry spell. That first proper surf window doesn't really show up until the second week, so be prepared for some flat days.
Let's start from the top. Right now, through the end of August and into the very beginning of September, the energy is basically non-existent. We're talking tiny, weak swell with combined energy readings barely climbing out of the teens (like 19 or 23). The water temp is sitting at a warm 85°F, which is about average for this time of year, but you won't be needing a wetsuit for any of these ankle-snappers.
The first five or six days are a write-off. You'll see some glassy mornings on the 19th and the 22nd, but with a swell height of just 0.7ft to 2ft and period under 8 seconds, it's not worth paddling out. Even the Thursday afternoon on the 24th shows a little more size at 3ft, but it's coming with a moderate cross-shore wind and a period of just 6 seconds. It's messy and weak.
The real standout, the only time you might want to take a look, is on the 31st of August. Monday morning brings a glassy start with a bit of puff from the NNE at 1ft and a period of 8 seconds. Combined energy is 38 – still weak, but it's the cleanest we get. Then, Monday afternoon the wind goes glassy again with a 0.7ft swell but, here’s the kicker, the period jumps to 12 seconds. That's a long-period groundswell, which for a point break like Domes (Rincon) is perfect. It's not big, but that clean, glassy surface with a little long-period push could make for a few fun, smooth runners. The energy is still low (35), so don't expect power, but the shape could be there.
After that, the start of September looks flat again until the 2nd of September, Wednesday morning, where you get a 2ft NE swell with a 6-second period and clean offshores. It's small and weak but clean.
So, what's the call? The only true stand-out is the afternoon of the 31st of August at Domes. Glassy conditions, a long-period 12-second swell from the NNE. It's not a pumping day, but for a point break, that clean, lined-up energy is the best we've got. Everything else is for the longboard or a beach day.
Rusty.
