The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell ya, it's a tough stretch for us here at Domes (Rincon). Looking right through the next 16 days, and honestly, there's just not a single window where the surf is worth paddling out for. It’s a real shame, because this is usually a fun little point break that can handle a bit of swell.
The problem is we’ve got a flat spell that just won't quit. The whole forecast is littered with "poor surf conditions" from start to finish. The swell energy is a joke, hardly ever cracking the 50 mark, with most days sitting in the single digits or low 20s. That's weak, weak energy. The water temperature is sitting at a warm 85°F, which is about normal for this time of year, but you’ll be floating more than surfing.
The first few days are a total write-off. Wednesday the 19th through the weekend, we’re looking at tiny ankle-snappers mixed with a bit of cross-onshore chop. We get a few glassy mornings, like Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, but with swell heights barely reaching 0.7 ft, there’s nothing to ride. The wind will be light and variable, but it doesn't matter when there's no wave.
We see a slight bump in energy around Wednesday the 26th of August, with the swell trying to push to 4 ft, but the period is a short, weak 5 seconds, and the combined energy is still a pathetic 63. That’s not a surfable wave; it’s just a bumpy, mushy mess. The wind is going cross-shore, making it even less appealing.
The end of August and into September brings a few cleaner conditions with light offshore winds and glassy mornings, but the swell is still tiny – 0.7 ft to 2 ft at best. We do see a couple of swells with a longer period, like 11 to 12 seconds near the end of the month, which is a classic groundswell signal, but the heights are just too small to generate any push. That energy is all deep-water and doesn't translate to the beach.
This is a classic case of a blank run for this area. Domes can be a bit inconsistent, but it’s rare to see such a prolonged period of flatness. The setup is better for a paddle board than a surfboard right now. Don't hold your breath, but forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
