The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what we’ve got coming up. Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, with a lot of flat spells to wade through. There’s a small window of hope, but you’ll need patience.
The first real chance of a wave doesn’t show up until Thursday morning, the 23rd of July. Before that, from now through Wednesday, the 22nd, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell is tiny, the winds are messy, and the energy is non-existent. We’re looking at a solid 5-day gap of poor surf conditions, with wave heights barely scraping 2 ft, and the combined energy values are all in the weak range (between 6 and 86). It’s heartbreaking, but it’s what we’ve got.
Thursday morning, the 23rd, finally offers a glimmer. Egypt Beach gets a little pulse of 1 ft swell from the ESE with a period of 10 seconds. The wind is offshore from the west at 9 mph, which will keep things clean. The combined energy is a weak 49, but it’s surfable. That said, it’s very ordinary, and the swell is short period, so don’t expect much drive. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, so it’s worth a look if you’re desperate.
Things go flat again from Friday, the 24th, through to Sunday, the 26th. More tiny waves, more messy winds. You’re looking at another 3-day gap of nothing worth paddling out for.
Now, here’s the one standout. Monday morning, the 27th of July, things get interesting. We get a jump to 5 ft swell from the NE, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a moderate 163. The wind is glassy – a light NNE breeze at 3 mph – so it’ll be absolutely clean. The water temperature is 67° and that’s bang on average for the time of year, so no drama there. This is the best on offer if you’re a beginner, but it’s getting a bit punchy for total novices. The short period will make it a bit dumpy and quick, so it’s not the world’s best wave, but it’s the most size we’ll see.
The following day, Tuesday, the 28th of July, is the real highlight. The swell pushes up to 6 ft from the NE, with that same short 7-second period. The combined energy is strong at 485, indicating a lot of water moving around. The wind is a gentle offshore from the SSW at 9 mph, keeping it clean. This is expert territory though – over 8 ft it’s experts only, and we’re close to that. The short period NE swell at a beach break like this means it’s going to be a bit of a wash-through, powerful and fast. It’s not a point break, so don’t expect long walls. It’s more of a punchy, take-off-and-go kind of session. The afternoon has a risk of thunderstorms and a moderate breeze, so the morning is your window.
After that, from Wednesday, the 29th of July, right through to the end of the forecast on Sunday, the 2nd of August, it’s back to flat, weak, and messy. A final 5-day gap of nothing. The combined energy drops back into the weak range (7 to 53), with tiny 1 ft to 2 ft waves and onshore or cross-onshore winds. It’s a real bummer of an ending to the outlook.
So, to sum it up: if you want a wave, your best bet is Tuesday morning, the 28th of July, at Egypt Beach. That’s the standout. The Monday morning, the 27th, is a solid second option for beginners. Everything else is a flat, frustrating wait.
Rusty.
