The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's break down what's coming for the Egypt Beach area.
It's a pretty grim stretch for the next two weeks. The first real chance of a wave doesn't pop up until the beginning of September. From now through the end of August, it's a long, flat, and windy drought. The 22nd of August shows a tiny 3ft easterly windswell with a cross-breeze, and it just stays that way for days. The swell barely gets over 2ft, and when it does, the wind is usually onshore or cross-shore. It's a proper dead spell.
The first slight glimmer is on the 4th of September, Friday morning. The swell climbs to 4ft from the ESE, but it's blowing cross-onshore, and the combined energy is a moderate 202, so it's still messy. Not the one to get excited about.
The real standout, the one you're waiting for, is Saturday the 5th of September. Saturday morning brings a clean 5ft swell from the ENE with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a solid 358 (moderate wave energy), and the best part is the wind is dead calm – glassy. For a beginner-friendly spot like Egypt Beach, 5ft is a fun, manageable size, and with zero wind, the surface will be like a sheet of glass. This is your window. The water is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year.
Egypt Beach is a consistent, exposed beach break that does well with east swell. The optimum swell direction is from the NE, and the Saturday morning swell is from the ENE – right in the sweet spot. Crowds can be *sometimes* a problem, but for a glassy Saturday morning, it'll be worth it. The offshore wind is from the W, so it's a clean cross-offshore setup. The period is short at 7 seconds, so the waves will be a bit sectiony and close together, not a long period groundswell, but that's normal for a beach break. The afternoon turns ugly as the wind swings onshore, so get on it early.
The rest of that first week of September is a dud. The 6th shows a drop back to 2ft with clean conditions, but it's just too small.
So, to put it plain: the next two weeks are mostly a waste. Don't bother until the 5th of September. That Saturday morning with the glassy conditions and a solid 5ft swell is your only real shot. Get after it.
Rusty.
