The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. I’ve scanned the charts for Egypt Beach for the next couple of weeks, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: it’s looking bleak. There isn’t a single decent wave on offer in the entire 16-day window. Every single forecast period comes back with poor surf conditions. We’re looking at a stretch where you’ll be staring at flat, dribbly lines rather than anything with any push. That’s a long stretch of nothing, over two weeks of no real recommendations, so don’t hold your breath waiting for a quick fix.
The only spot on the map is Egypt Beach itself, a consistent beginner spot that’s exposed to the east-northeast, but even its consistency can’t manufacture swell out of thin air. Right now, the water temp is sitting at 70°, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a hood.
Let’s run through the reality of it. The coming Friday, the 21st, and Saturday the 22nd, are total washouts. We’re talking ankle-biters around 1ft to 4ft, but the wind is cross-onshore, chopping everything up. The swell energy is weak, sitting around the 20 to 80 range. It’s messy, it’s small, and it’s just not worth paddling out for. Forget it.
Sunday the 23rd shows a tiny 2ft in the morning, but the period is a weak 5 seconds. The afternoon goes glassy with a 12-second pulse, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft. It’s tempting to look at that glassy surface, but with energy only reading 25, it’s just a flat, oily ocean. Not a wave on it.
As we move into the new week, Monday and Tuesday the 24th and 25th have the wind swinging offshore. That’s good, the surface will be clean, but it’s still tiny. You’re looking at dribbles of 0.7ft to 2ft with energy maxing out in the low 40s. That's not a surf, that’s a paddle with a board under your arm.
Through the rest of that week and into the first week of September, it just doesn't get any better. The swell stays below 1ft, the energy readings drop into the single digits at times. Even the clean, glassy moments on Friday the 28th morning with a 1ft, or Monday the 31st with 0.7ft, are not going to produce a single rideable wave. For a beach break, these are hopeless numbers.
One thing to keep in mind: on a setup like this with such small, short-period swell, the wave quality is non-existent. The few days with a clean offshore flow are just going to be flat and pretty. There’s no power, no push, and certainly no barrels. With the swell this small, you could honestly have more fun on a skateboard than in the water.
So, there you have it. A total blank. It’s a longer dry spell than usual, but that’s how it goes in this area sometimes. Keep the boards in the car if you’re driving by, but be prepared to just watch the horizon. The forecasts can always change, but as it stands, this is a stay-home kind of period.
Keep an eye on the charts, and I’ll see you when the swell decides to show up.
