The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you — this is a tough one for Avalon 30th Street. The next 16 days are looking pretty flat and quiet, with only a few tiny windows where you might scrape a wave, but nothing that’s going to get you out of bed early.
Right now, we’re in a real dry spell. The water’s running a touch warmer than normal at 75°F, which is a nice change for the time of year, but that’s about the only excitement. There’s a long gap of poor surf right through the first week. From Tuesday 14th July all the way through to Friday 17th July, we’ve got nothing but tiny, weak waves under 1ft, most of it with cross-shore or onshore wind. The energy is barely there, with numbers like 21 to 7 (weak energy). Not worth paddling out for.
The first real chance to even think about a surf comes late on Saturday 18th July. The afternoon sees a bump to 4ft from the south, period a short 5 seconds, and the wind goes cross-off from the west at 9 mph. It’s surfable, but very ordinary – the energy is still only 79 (weak). A beginner might find a couple of closeouts, but it’s not a standout.
We get a couple of glassy mornings on the 20th and 22nd, with the swell around 3ft from the SSE. The 22nd Wednesday morning is the best-looking window in the whole outlook: offshore wind from the NNW at 9 mph, clean conditions, and the swell is from the SSE at 3ft with a 9-second period. The energy sits at 101 (moderate). That’s a little more push, but it’s still small. For a complete beginner, it’s rideable, but don’t expect much.
The second week doesn’t get any better. There’s a patch of weak, small swell from the ESE and SSE, with the occasional clean moment on the 26th Sunday afternoon, when the wind goes offshore from the WNW at 12 mph, and the swell is 3ft from the ESE at 8 seconds. Energy is 89 (weak). It’s clean, but tiny.
Honestly, there’s nothing here that I’d call a true standout. The best on offer is the Wednesday 22nd morning, with that clean offshore wind and a bit of moderate energy, or the 26th Sunday afternoon for a clean, small session. But if you’re looking for real waves, you’re better off waiting for a change in the forecast.
Rusty.
