Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cupsogue over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough stretch for Cupsogue. The whole 16-day window looks pretty flat and messy. We’ve got a long gap with no real surf to speak of until the very end, so don’t get your hopes up for a quick fix.
The first week is a write-off. From Thursday the 9th right through to Sunday the 20th, it’s all tiny, weak, and choppy. The combined wave energy barely cracks three digits, mostly sitting in the teens, twenties, and thirties – that’s weak, anemic stuff. Winds are all over the place, mostly cross or onshore, so the water’s a mess. You’ll see a few mornings with a light breeze and cleaner conditions, like Friday the 10th and Thursday the 16th, but the swell is so small – 2 ft to 3 ft – and short period (4 to 7 seconds) that it’s barely a ripple. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Then, around Monday the 20th, things start to change. The swell picks up, but it’s not good news. By Monday afternoon, we’re looking at 6 ft from the SSW, with a combined energy of 311 (moderate), but the wind is straight onshore from the SE, and the wave comment says “poor surf conditions.” This is too big for beginners, and the wind will ruin it.
Tuesday the 21st is the only faint glimmer of hope. Morning sees 5 ft from the south with a 7-second period, combined energy at 223 (moderate). The wind is from the NE at 9 mph, so it’s cross-shore, keeping it a little cleaner. The wave comment says “marginal” – not great, but the best of a bad bunch. The afternoon is similar, 6 ft and onshore wind from the SSE. These are still only for experienced surfers, and the break is a beach/jetty setup, so that short period (7 seconds) will make it dumpy and hard to catch. Crowds are possible here, but with conditions this average, it might not be too busy.
Wednesday the 22nd has some size too – 5 ft in the afternoon from the south, energy hitting 394 (moderate) – but again, cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions. It’s just not clean.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the Tuesday the 21st morning session. The 5 ft south swell with a cross-offshore wind from the NE gives the cleanest waves of the whole period. It’s not great, but it’s the only window where you might get a few rideable ones. The swell direction (S) matches the optimum direction (SW) reasonably well, so it’s not completely off.
Honestly, this is a period where the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially on the 20th through the 22nd when the wind and swell are up but the quality is poor.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the forecast, and don’t drive out of your way for this one.
Rusty.
