Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with you – this stretch of the coast is in a bit of a flat spell. We’re talking the whole 16-day window starting from Saturday the 4th of July, and honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The wave energy is weak, the swell is tiny, and most of the time the wind is doing us no favours. It’s a tough run.
Let’s break it down. From Saturday the 4th right through to the end of the first week, the swell height barely scrapes 2ft, and the period is short, often around 8 or 9 seconds, so it’s weak, windswell stuff. The only spot on the cards is Avalon Pier (beach/jetty), and it’s exposed to the swell, but there’s just no power. The combined swell energy is pitiful – you’re looking at values like 31, 56, 80 – all well under 100, meaning it’s feeble. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, and when it does swing offshore, there’s still no wave to ride. Even the few clean windows, like Tuesday the 7th morning with a light offshore, have only 0.9ft of swell. There’s simply nothing to surf.
The second week doesn’t get much better. Monday the 13th morning finally shows “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” with 3ft of swell from the NE, period a short 6 seconds, and the combined energy hits 67 – still weak. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but the waves are gutless. Tuesday the 14th morning picks up a bit with 2ft from the ENE, period 7 seconds, and offshore wind from the W at 16 mph, but the swell is weak and the energy is only 68. It’s not worth getting excited about. Wednesday the 15th morning is similar – 2ft, ENE, period 7 seconds, light offshore wind, combined energy 76. Still poor. After that, it fades back to nothing.
The water temperature at Avalon Pier is 80°F with a tiny anomaly of 1°F, so it’s about average for this time of year – no drama there.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a wave, you’re better off staying home. The whole 16 days is a write-off. There’s no standout, no hidden gem, just flat, weak, and ordinary. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is a blank run.
Rusty.
