The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest – this 16-day stretch for the local spot is a real bummer. We’re looking at a long, flat spell for the first week and a half. If you’re hoping to get wet, you might be better off checking the forecast again in a few days.
The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until the end. The only spot on the menu is 12th Street Jetty (a beach/jetty setup). This one’s for the advanced crew only, as it’s a consistent break that can get tricky.
Alright, let’s run through it. From Sunday, July 19th, all the way through to Wednesday, July 30th, it’s a dead zone. We’re talking days of knee-high slop or nothing. The wind is all over the place – cross, cross-on, and onshore – with the occasional clean day but zero swell. The water temp is a warm 76°, which is a touch warmer than average for the time of year, but that doesn’t mean much when there’s no waves.
The first glimmer of hope comes on the afternoon of Thursday, July 30th. Swell bumps up to 4ft from the ENE, but the energy is still weak (97) and the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, making it choppy. It’s still a “poor surf conditions” call.
Then, on Friday morning, July 31st, we finally see something with a bit of power. Swell hits 5ft from the ENE, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 258 – that’s moderate wave energy. A light cross-shore breeze keeps the ripples small. This is about as good as it gets. The swell is 5ft, so it’s big enough to be a handful for beginners, but a solid option for the advanced crew. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a moderate cross-onshore wind, but the morning window is the standout.
Saturday, August 1st, sees the swell dropping back to 3ft from the E, with light cross-shore winds. It’s a step down, but still a lot better than the rest of the week. The energy is moderate (118).
By Sunday, August 2nd afternoon, the swell is back to 4ft from the S, but with a short period, and the guidance says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” The wind is clean, though.
So, the bottom line: the one true standout is the Friday morning, July 31st, session at 12th Street Jetty. That’s your best bet. It’s a long way out, but that ENE swell with a light cross-shore is the closest we get to a decent wave. The rest of the run is a write-off, so don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
