The Lowdown
Alright, let's have a look at what's on the table.
Honestly, mate, it’s a tough run for the next couple of weeks at 12th Street Jetty. We’ve got a solid 16-day stretch ahead, but there’s hardly any energy to work with, and what’s there isn’t shaping up for much. This is a beach/jetty setup, and it’s pretty exposed to the swell, but the swell we’re seeing is just too weak to get anything decent going. There’s a big gap of flat, poor conditions right through until the end of August, so don’t bother waxing up yet.
The only faint glimmer comes right at the end of the forecast, on Saturday, the 5th of September. Early that morning, we’re looking at a tiny 2ft swell from the south, with a period of just 4 seconds—so it’s a real short-period, weak windswell. The combined energy is pitiful, barely registering at 21. But here’s the thing: the wind is glassy, absolutely dead calm, which is a massive positive for clean conditions. It’s also a Saturday, so expect the crowds to be around, but with surf this small, it’s unlikely to be hectic. The water temperature is about average for this time of year. That Saturday morning is the only real standout, but it’s still only for the most patient of surfers on a log or a foamy.
Other than that one morning, the rest of the run is just not worth chasing. There are plenty of mornings with offshore or glassy winds, like Monday, the 24th of August, with a glassy 1ft from the SE, or Wednesday, the 26th of August, again glassy with 1ft. But the swell is just too weak to push anything rideable. For the whole period, the combined energy stays in the low double digits or teens, which is barely enough to move a sea lion.
Forget about any bigger days—the swell height never pushes past 2ft, and that’s the absolute peak. Given the weak swell, poor quality, and the jetty/beach setup, this stretch is honestly more interesting for a kite surfer if the wind picks up, but for a standard paddle session, it’s a write-off. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, it’s a lean run.
