Table - best surf conditions forecast for 12th Street Jetty over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the run of surf coming up for 12th Street Jetty.
To be straight with you, it’s a pretty bleak outlook for the next couple of weeks. The whole 16-day run is a tough watch. We’re looking at a long stretch of weak, choppy, or just plain tiny surf. For the first several days, the energy is just not there, and when there is a bump, the wind is usually messing it up. The combined swell energy is very weak, topping out at only 68 early on, and it quickly drops into the teens and single digits. There isn’t a single standout day in the whole period.
On Tuesday the 7th of July morning, we’ve got the biggest swell of the run at a tiny 3ft from the ENE, but with a short period of 6 seconds. The wind is a cross-off from the NNE at 12 mph, which keeps it clean, but the swell is just too weak and short to offer anything decent. The combined energy is only 68, which is weak. The water temperature is a notable 76°, which is 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – a good 5 degrees warmer, so it’s very unusual.
The rest of the first week is a write-off. Wednesday and Thursday see even smaller waves with onshore or cross-onshore winds making it choppy. By Friday the 10th, the swell drops to 1ft, and while we get some clean offshore winds from the NW, there’s simply no power.
From about the 12th of July through the middle of the month, there’s a run of days with a bit of swell bumping up to 3ft, but the period stays short (4-7 seconds) and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, making it poor. The combined energy rarely cracks 50. The end of the second week (from the 17th onward) is almost flat, with waves hovering at 0.3ft or none at all. We get some clean conditions on the 15th with a light offshore, but the swell is only 1ft from the SE.
Honestly, for a beach and jetty setup like this, with such weak, short-period swell and strong wind, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. There’s just not enough juice or a clean enough window to get excited about. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s not unusual when the forecasts are this flat. Keep an eye on it – things can change, but for now, save your energy.
Rusty.
