The Lowdown
Gather 'round, folks. Rusty here. Lookin' at the next couple of weeks for 12th Street Jetty, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch. The forecast is a real bummer for the most part, with a whole lot of flat, weak, and messy conditions. We're lookin' at a solid run of tiny, poor surf that barely registers, and there's a big gap of nothin' worth paddling out for. The early part of the outlook is a write-off, and the only blip of interest is a long way off.
Right now, and for the first several days, it's a total dud. The combined swell energy is pitifully low, barely crackin' double digits (7) on Thursday the 16th. We're talkin' ankle-snappers with a tiny 0.7ft of swell, and the wind is all over the shop – cross, onshore, just messy. Friday and Saturday aren't any better, with tiny waves and onshore junk. You'd be better off cleanin' the wax off your board at home.
Then we hit a real barren stretch. From Sunday the 19th all the way through to Thursday the 24th, the wave energy is still mostly in the single digits or low double digits, with heights under 2ft. There's a few moments of clean offshore wind on Sunday morning and afternoon, but with a swell of 0.3ft, it's a glassy, empty lake, not a surf break. There's a brief spike on Wednesday the 22nd with clean conditions, but again, 0.7ft of swell is nothin'. This is a full week of nearly nothin' to work with, so don't even bother.
The only thing that gets my blood pumpin' a little is the window around Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. That Saturday morning shows a jump in combined energy to 220 (moderate) with a 4ft swell from the SE. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it might be a bit crinkly but rideable. Things get a little bigger Saturday afternoon with 6ft of SE swell and a combined energy of 362 (moderate), but the wind swings onshore and chops it up – that's a pass for most. Then Sunday the 26th drops back down.
Forget about the second week for surf. The waves from Monday the 27th to the end of the month are small, weak, and mostly cross-onshore. The combined energy values are all under 100 (weak), and the swell heights are mostly under 3ft. It's a consistent run of poor surf.
The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, runnin' about 75°F, so you'll be comfy in a spring suit if you're fool enough to go out.
The only real standout, if you can even call it that, is Saturday the 25th morning. The 4ft SE swell is the best size we'll see for a while, and the light cross-shore wind is the best wind condition in the whole forecast. The swell direction (SE) is a bit off from the optimum NE for this break, but it's the only window with a pulse of energy and some semblance of order. Be aware, this break is an advanced spot, and it's consistent, but crowds are possible. That 4ft is still small enough for a beginner to have a go, but don't expect any barrels.
Overall, it's a bleak outlook. The forecast confidence is high for the near term, and it's just bad. The only faint glimmer of hope is that Saturday the 25th, and we're over a week away for that. Keep your eye on the charts, but for now, find another hobby.
Rusty.
