Alright, grab a coffee, let’s talk about the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, 12th Street Jetty is not looking like much of a surf destination during this 16-day stretch. We’ve basically got a long flat spell coming up with no real rideable waves on the cards. The one break we’ve got intel on is 12th Street Jetty, a beach and jetty setup that’s an advanced-only kind of spot, and it’s fairly exposed. Honestly, for this whole period, every single session is rated as poor surf conditions, so there’s no standout, no hidden gem. You won’t be checking the forecast with any enthusiasm.
Let’s run through it. Starting now – which is around the 4th of July. Saturday morning, you’ve got a tiny 1 ft swell from the SE, period around 9 seconds, and cross-off wind. That’s weak energy (21). It’s clean but just not enough push. Afternoon picks up a stiff 16 mph cross-shore wind from the SSW, and it turns into a mess. Sunday stays below 1 ft, mostly onshore or cross-on, forget it. The long gap of nothing continues through Monday and Tuesday with tiny 2 ft to 3 ft swell but the wind is all wrong – onshore or cross-on, choppy. The combined energy barely cracks 97, which is still weak.
There is a small break in the clouds on Wednesday the 8th of July, with a clean 2 ft E swell in the morning under a light offshore, and by Wednesday afternoon it goes glassy with 2 ft and 7-second period. Still, the swell height is feeble. Through the rest of the first week and into the second, we see more of the same – the swell height stays between 0.3 ft and 4 ft, mostly short period, and while we do get some clean offshore winds from the WNW or glassy conditions on the 10th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th of July, the wave sizes are too small for anything fun. By the 16th, it’s back to glassy 1 ft. Even by the 19th of July, it’s all 0.3 ft SE swell with very long 13-second period, but just no height.
Because there is no actual surfable swell in the window, I can’t send you anywhere with a good conscience. All the forecasts show poor conditions, so the surf report here is a weather report. The water temperature is sitting at a balmy 73°F with a 3°F positive anomaly – that’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you can get warm while you’re staring at a flat ocean.
This is a genuine blank run for the area. Usually these quiet spells don’t last forever, but right now? It’s like the ocean hit the snooze button for two weeks.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts, and maybe bring the kite if you’re feeling desperate. This setup would be better for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
