Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch coming up for Playa el Bombo. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple to get excited about. The forecast starts with a big fat zero on Thursday, August 6th, and we’re staring down a whole lot of nothing for days on end. The first decent sign of any energy doesn’t show up until Monday morning, August 10th, but even then, it’s a tiny 0.3ft easterly windswell with a period of just 6 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 1. That’s not surf, that’s a lake. We’re talking about a gap of nearly four days where there’s just no surf to speak of.
The water temperature is sitting at 71°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, by about 3°. So you’ll want a spring suit if you’re heading out.
The only real flicker of hope comes on Wednesday, August 19th, in the afternoon. We finally see a pulse of swell: a 2ft SW groundswell, with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy hits 25, which is still weak, but it’s something. The wind is cross-onshore from the east, so it’s not going to be clean. It’s a beach break, and with that small, short-period swell and a bit of chop, it’s more of a mess than a session. Beginners might find it okay for a splash, but it’s not surf worth writing home about.
The rest of the run is a dead loss. Plenty of days with glassy conditions and offshore winds, but no swell to push them. The spot is inconsistent, and this forecast proves it. We get a few days of clean conditions on August 20th and 21st, but the swell is gone again. The wind swings strong on Monday afternoon, August 17th, with a fresh breeze from the SW at 22 mph, but again, no wave energy to back it up.
So, what’s the standout? There isn’t one. The best of a bad bunch is the Wednesday afternoon, August 19th, but that’s not saying much. It’s a quiet, frustrating time for surfers. Stay hopeful, though – these blank runs don’t last forever, and forecasts can change.
