The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer down at Topaz Street.
To be honest, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty quiet. We’ve got a long stretch of small, onshore junk to start. The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until the morning of Sunday the 23rd of August. Even then, it’s only marginal with a light cross-onshore breeze and a weak 1ft southwest swell. The energy is moderate but messy (209). The water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing special there.
The pattern continues with small, onshore slop right through the end of the month. The morning of Wednesday the 26th of August offers a slightly better look – still small at 2ft from the southwest, but with a glassy cross-shore breeze. That’s about as clean as it gets, but the swell energy is only moderate (317) and the period is a long 16 seconds, which can make it fat and straight on a beach setup. Not a standout.
The real highlight, and the only proper call in this whole outlook, is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. We finally see a clean window. The wind shifts to a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, which will have the waves looking clean. The swell is small at 2ft from the southwest, but the energy is moderate (200) and the period is a solid 15 seconds. For a beach/jetty spot, this is the best we’re going to get. The crowd factor is a concern though – it’s often busy, so expect company.
Aside from that one morning, it’s a long run of onshore wind and small waves. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on most days. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, don’t plan any dawn patrols for the next week.
Rusty.
