The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf at Topaz Street. We’ve got a lot of small, weak swell and onshore winds messing things up for most of the period. If you’re hanging for a wave, you’ll need to be patient and pick your moments, because there aren't many.
Right off the bat, Monday the 17th is a write-off. We’ve got a weak 2ft SW groundswell with a long 14-second period, but the light cross-onshore breeze and marginal conditions mean it’s not worth paddling out. The combined energy is only 219 (weak). It’s a beach/jetty setup, and it’s just not cooperating. Tuesday’s even smaller at 2ft, and the wind is cross-shore; it’s a no-go. Wednesday offers the same size, but the wind is light and cross, still not clean enough to get excited about. Thursday and Friday are poor, with the swell dropping to 1ft and onshore winds making it choppy. We’re looking at a blank stretch here, folks.
The weekend of the 23rd and 24th doesn’t offer any relief either. The swell stays weak, around 1ft, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on. The energy is bumping up a little (around 200), but it’s not translating into anything rideable. The water temp anomaly is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We finally see a slight change on Thursday the 27th. The morning has a light cross-offshore breeze and the sea state is described as “clean,” but the swell is only 1ft with a short 14-second period. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. You’d be struggling to get a decent ride.
Now, here’s the one highlight in this entire outlook. Friday the 28th is our best bet. The morning is still marginal, but in the afternoon the wind swings to the east, blowing gently offshore. The swell picks up slightly to 2ft from the SSW with a 16-second period. The combined energy is up to 226 (moderate), and for the first time we see “expect good surf conditions.” This is the standout session. It won’t be big, but it’ll be clean and glassy. Crowds are possible here, so if you can get out, it’ll be worth it.
After that, we go back to the grind. The 29th and 30th have a bit more size at 2ft, but the morning winds are cross-on and the afternoons are onshore and stronger. The energy jumps to 365 on the 29th, which is moderate, but with the wind blowing on it, it won’t be any good for a paddle. The final day, the 31st, is more of the same – small, onshore, and messy.
So, the long and short of it is: get your fix on Friday the 28th. It’s the only real chance for a clean wave in the next 16 days. Everything else is a flat, wind-blown mess. The setup looks more interesting for kitesurfing than surfing on most days, to be honest. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
