The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the St Andrews State Park area over the next couple weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s looking flat and quiet for the most part. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 87°F.
We’ve got a 16-day window ahead, but honestly, there’s a big dry spell straight out of the gate. The first real hope doesn’t show up until Thursday the 20th of August, and even then it’s a struggle. The pattern is a long run of weak, short-period windswell with a lot of onshore wind junking things up. From now through the 19th, the waves are tiny and messy – a complete write-off for a paddle. On the morning of Thursday the 20th, we see a faint glimmer with a cross-offshore breeze from the NNW and a clean surface, but the swell is only 2 ft from the W with a period of 4 seconds and low energy (9). That’s barely a ripple.
The best the whole period has to offer, and I’m using the term “best” loosely, lands on Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th of August. On Sunday the 23rd morning, we get a clean look with a cross-offshore wind from the NNW. Swell is still small at 3 ft from the WSW with a 5-second period, but the combined energy is 28 – the highest we see. Monday the 24th morning is similar, clean again with a cross-offshore NNW breeze, 2 ft from the WSW and a touch less energy at 21. That’s your standout window. It’s not going to blow your hair back, but it’s the only time the wind gives you a break. Expect the usual crowd at St Andrews State Park, as it can get busy sometimes.
After that, the run continues with tiny, weak waves and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds right through to the end of August. By the 29th and 30th, the swell completely flatlines with zero energy coming through. We finally see a tiny pulse of 2 ft from the NW on the afternoon of the 31st, but it’s coming straight onshore from the SW, so it’s not going to be any good.
For the first few days of September, it’s more of the same – absolute scraps with 1.0 ft to 1 ft of short-period slop. This is a tough stretch for a surfer with not much to get excited about. If you’re desperate, those clean mornings on the 23rd and 24th are your only real shot.
Rusty.
