The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. For the entire 16-day window, St Andrews State Park is showing consistent, tiny surf, and the conditions just aren't coming together for a proper session. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 88°, which feels nice on a flat day, but that's about the only positive.
Looking at the forecast, from now through early September, we're stuck in a pattern of minimal swell. The swell heights barely scrape 2ft or 2ft at best, and those come with short, weak periods around 4 seconds, meaning the wave energy is very low (combined energy values mostly in the single digits or teens). The wind is often onshore or cross-onshore, adding chop to an already anemic surf.
There are a few brief moments that aren't a complete write-off. On the morning of Saturday the 29th of August, we get a glassy window with a light SSW breeze and a tiny 2ft swell from the West. It's clean, but it's knee-high at best. Similarly, the morning of Sunday the 30th of August goes flat calm, but with only 0.7ft on the charts, it's essentially a lake. The mornings of the 31st of August and the 4th of September show a clean cross-off wind, which is nice for the surface, but again, the swell is just not there to push through.
The only period that shows a flicker of something is Thursday the 27th of August into Friday the 28th. We see the swell nudge up to 2ft-2ft from the West, still weak period, but the combined energy climbs to 18 on the 27th afternoon – still weak, but it's the most we'll see. The wind is still cross-onshore though, so it'll be bumpy. The best call is probably the morning of Saturday the 29th for a clean but tiny paddle, or if you're desperate, the afternoon of the 27th for the biggest, but messiest, little waves.
To be honest, for most of this stretch, with the onshore winds and minimal swell, this spot is looking more like a kiting or windsurfing setup than a surf break. It's a frustrating run, but that's how it goes sometimes in this part of the world. Forecasts can change, but for now, keep the board in the car just in case.
Rusty.
