The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I’ll be honest with you – it’s a pretty grim stretch ahead. The forecast shows a long, quiet run with barely a ripple to get excited about. We’re looking at a solid gap of no surf worth mentioning from now until the end of the 16-day window. The first recommendation doesn’t even come up until the 5th of September, and even that’s a real stretch.
St Andrews State Park is the only spot in the mix, and it’s a beach and jetty setup that’s exposed to a SW swell. The water is sitting at a warm 87°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice thought, but it won’t make up for the tiny waves.
From Saturday the 22nd of August right through the end of the month, it’s flat. The combined energy of all swells directed here is a big fat zero for most of those days. We get a few tiny pulses of 0.7ft to 1ft, but with periods of only 3 to 4 seconds, that’s just wind chop. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the label says ‘poor surf conditions’ every single time. Not a single wave worth paddling for.
We do get a few clean mornings on the 29th, 30th, and 31st of August with light offshore breezes, but the swell is still a zero. Clean flatness is still flat.
Moving into September, the first week of the month is the same story. The 2nd and 3rd see clean conditions with light cross-offshore winds, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft to 0.7ft. The combined energy is just 1 to 3. It’s not surf.
Finally, on the 5th of September, we see the best of a very poor lot. The combined energy of all swells directed here hits 18. That’s still very weak. We get a 2ft swell from the W with a period of 4 seconds. The morning is clean with a cross-offshore ENE breeze at 12 mph. It’s tiny, short-period, and weak. The wind is clean, but the waves are only for the smallest of soft-top boards.
Bottom line: there’s no standout surf in this entire 16-day window. For this area, a blank run like this is more normal than unusual. The setup looks more interesting for a kite session than a paddle session if the wind picks up. The good news is that it tends not to stay this poor for long, and forecasts can change. I’d keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
