The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell ya, it's been a rough stretch here at St Andrews State Park. We're looking at a 16-day window, and honestly, there's nothing to get excited about for a paddle surfer. The whole run is a total blank. If you're looking to get a wave, you're gonna be staring at a whole lot of flat, choppy, and messy conditions.
The first real chance for anything, and I'm reaching here, doesn't come around until Saturday the 18th. Even then, it's a small 4ft swell from the west, but the wind is gonna be straight onshore, making it a sloppy mess. The combined energy is only 77 (moderate), and that's about as good as it gets. The water on the 13th was a warm 87°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but you won't be needing a wetsuit.
Throughout the entire period, the swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, and coming from the west or southwest. The period is short, mostly 4 or 5 seconds, so it's weak, windswell stuff. Every single entry in the forecast says "poor surf conditions," and that's the truth. The wind is always cross-onshore, onshore, or just plain messy, with a few brief moments of clean cross-offshore winds on the mornings of the 19th, 20th, and 21st. But even then, the swell is a pathetic 2ft to 2ft, so it's not worth paddling out for.
This spot is a beach and jetty setup, and with the persistent onshore winds and weak swell, it’s honestly looking more interesting for kite surfing than a paddle surf. The wind is often a fresh breeze, especially in the afternoons, which is perfect for a kite.
There are a few mornings, like the 19th, 20th, and 21st, where the wind goes light and cross-offshore, giving us glassy conditions. But the swell is just too small and weak to do anything with it. The waves would be knee-high at best, with barely any energy.
The rest of the forecast is more of the same: tiny, weak swell with onshore winds. The 24th into the 25th brings some risk of thunderstorms and a bit more wind, but still no real surf. It's a tough outlook, but for this area, a blank run like this is pretty normal. The forecasts can change, so don't give up hope, but for now, keep the board in the car.
