The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, giving you the straight-up skinny on the local surf outlook.
To be honest, mate, it’s a bit of a flat spell right now. Looking at the next two weeks, there’s no real swell to get excited about. We’re looking at a long run of tiny, weak energy. The combined energy of all swells here is only hitting 45 (weak energy) at the start, and it’s mostly just a dribble from the ESE. The water’s sitting at a warm 83.8°, which is about average for this time of year.
For a few days, there’s just nothing going on. Then, around Thursday the 23rd of July, we get a brief moment. That morning at FA’s (beach and reef), the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW, which is a big plus. The swell is tiny, only 2.3ft, but it’s clean and glassy. The combined energy is still weak at 55. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but with the swell being so small, it’s not going to be worth paddling out for anyone who’s not desperate.
The only other flicker of hope comes right at the end, on Wednesday the 29th of July. That morning, the wind is glassy calm from the WSW, and the swell is a touch cleaner from the E at 1.6ft with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is still weak at 62. It’s again surfable but very ordinary. This is a spot that’s fairly consistent, so it tends not to stay this poor for long, but this run is a blank one for quality waves. The setup is a beach and reef, but with the wind and weak swell, it’s not looking good for anything.
Overall, if you’re a kite surfer, the afternoons with onshore winds and a bit of chop might be more interesting than the paddle surf. But for surfers, there’s nothing to recommend. The best you’re looking at is a couple of mornings with clean, knee-high dribble.
