The Lowdown
Alright groms, Rusty here. Let’s get into what’s happening at FA's for the next couple of weeks.
I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: the start of this period is a total dud. From Saturday the 22nd of August all the way through the end of the month, we’ve got next to nothing. The swell is tiny – mostly under 3 feet – with weak energy readings that mostly stay below 100. The wind is blowing cross-on or onshore nearly every session, chopping up the surface. There are a few glassy mornings on the 27th and 28th, but the waves are barely 1 foot to 2 feet with a short period, so you’re just bobbing around. It’s all poor surf conditions. The water temp is about 85°F, right where it should be for this time of year.
After watching the flat spell stretch on for over a week, we finally get a little pulse on Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning at FA's is the only real highlight of the entire 16-day run. Swell bumps to around 2 feet from the E with an 11-second period – that’s a nice, long-interval groundswell. The energy reading jumps to 176, so there’s finally some moderate power in the water. The wind goes offshore from the WNW at just 6 mph, cleaning it right up. That’s your window.
This is the session to aim for. The swell direction is from the E, and while the spot prefers SSE, some east angle should wrap in well enough on the beach and reef setup. For beginners, 2 feet is a fun size. The spot is fairly consistent and fairly exposed, and crowds are often, so expect company. But after a week of nothing, that’s a price worth paying.
After that Wednesday morning, it’s back to small junk. From Thursday the 3rd of September on, we’re under 2 feet again with cross-on winds and weak energy. Nothing else to get excited about.
Bottom line: ten days of flat, one clean Wednesday morning on the 2nd of September, then back to flat. Make that session count.
Keep your eye on the horizon, folks.
Rusty.
