The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what FA’s has cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a sleepy stretch of surf. We’re looking at tiny waves, mostly 1 to 2 feet, with hardly any energy behind them. Right now, there’s a long gap of more than a week before we see anything that’s even worth mentioning. The water temp is about 84°, which is pretty normal for the season.
The first time we get a “surfable” nod is late on Saturday, August 22nd. The afternoon shows a 1ft wave from the east with a 9-second period. The wind is offshore from the WSW, so the surface will be clean, but the energy is low. It’s a start, but nothing to get excited about.
The next interesting moment hits on Thursday, August 27th, in the morning. The swell is still only 1ft, but the period jumps to 15 seconds—that’s a very long period groundswell. The energy bumps up to 101, which is a bit more interesting. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SW, keeping things clean. This is a long way out, so take it with a grain of salt, but that long period could give these tiny waves some push.
If you’re looking for the cleanest conditions, Tuesday, September 1st, in the afternoon shows a glassy 2ft wave from the ESE. The energy is still low, but glassy conditions mean you could snag a few fun ones. Again, this is far out, so it’s a promise, not a guarantee.
The story here is all small, weak swell. The only silver lining is that when the wind is offshore or glassy, the surface will be smooth. For a beginner, these ankle-to-knee high waves are perfect. For anyone else, it’s a tough ask. On the cross-on days with the wind up, this beach-and-reef setup is going to look better for kite surfing than paddling.
Bottom line: no big swell is coming. A few clean, small windows are the best we’ve got. Keep an eye on the 27th and the 1st of September, but don’t plan a trip around it.
Rusty.
