The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee surfers, it’s Rusty here. Let’s take a good hard look at FA's.
We’re kicking off on Saturday the 18th of July, and I’ll be honest with you, the outlook is a bit grim. This is a stretch where we’re looking at a long blank run. The swell is tiny and weak, and the winds are all wrong. We’re not talking about a few days of poor surf; we’re looking at a solid eight days of nothing really worth paddling out for. The surf is just not happening.
The first real chance to even think about a surf comes around Thursday morning the 23rd of July. The swell is a tiny 2.3 ft from the ESE, but the wind has finally swung offshore from the WSW, a light breeze. The combined swell energy is a measly 58 and the period is 8 seconds. It’s surfable, but just barely. The water temp is a normal 83.3°F for the time of year, so no complaints there. It’s a bit of a tease, because the afternoon turns back to junk.
The following morning, Friday the 24th, looks similar – a 2.3 ft ESE swell, light offshore wind, and the water is clean again. But again, it’s tiny and the period is still short. You could get a few if you’re desperate, but it’s not going to be a day to remember.
After that, we get a few more mornings with clean, offshore conditions, but the swell just isn't there. Saturday the 25th is glassy in the morning, but the swell is only 2.0 ft. Sunday the 26th has a 2.0 ft swell with a clean offshore breeze, but again, it’s tiny. The pattern continues through the end of the month and into August. The winds on the mornings of the 28th, 29th, and 30th of July and the 1st of August are all promising – clean offshore – but the swell is a pathetic 1.0 ft to 1.3 ft. The combined energy is in the teens or low twenties. It’s just not enough to push a wave.
To be honest, the whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent surf. The swell is too small and the periods are too short to generate any real power. It’s the kind of flat spell that’s normal for this area when the conditions just don't line up. There are no standouts here. For a spot like FA's, a beach and reef setup, the swell is so weak and the quality so poor that you’d have better luck with a kite than a paddle board. Keep the wax in the car, but don’t expect much.
