The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s not sugarcoat it – we’ve got a long, flat spell ahead. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty quiet for Daytona Beach, with no real size or energy to get excited about.
The water is sitting at a warm 85°F, which is a touch above the long-term average for this time of year – not shocking, but it’s a nice warm bath for those who want to float around.
From Friday, the 21st, right through to the end of the month, we’re stuck with tiny, weak swell. We’re talking ankle-snappers at best, mostly 0.7 ft to 1.0 ft from the east, with period around 8 to 13 seconds. The combined energy is weak, bouncing between 16 and 27 (weak energy), which is about as lethargic as it gets. The wind does go glassy and offshore on some mornings, particularly Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd, with a light WSW and W breeze, which would keep the surface clean. But honestly, with no wave height behind it, it’s a flat, glassy lake.
There’s a slight nudge in energy around the 27th and 28th, with the swell pushing to 2 ft and 2 ft, and the combined energy hitting 51 and 94 (still weak to moderate). The swell direction stays east, and the period is short (8-10 seconds). On Friday morning, the 28th, we get a glassy window with 1 ft east swell, and the comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – that’s the best of a bad bunch, but it’s still tiny. The wind is calm, so it’s clean, but you’ll be struggling for a ride.
The rest of the first week and into September keeps the same theme: 1.0 ft to 2 ft, short-period east swell, and mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore winds that chop it up. The mornings with glassy conditions (like the 30th, 3rd, 4th, and 5th) are your best bet for a clean surface, but the lack of swell means it’s a paddle and a prayer.
For the second week, the pattern doesn’t change. The swell remains small, and the energy is low. It’s a long stretch of flatness.
Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a paddleboard or a kite than a surfboard, given the small, weak swell and the cross-shore winds. The beach break here is exposed to the east, but the swell just isn’t delivering.
Hang in there, but this is a definite blank run for Daytona Beach. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
