The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the lowdown on the next couple of weeks. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – this 16-day stretch is looking painfully flat, especially for the first ten days. We've got a major dry spell of surf, so don't get your hopes up.
We start off on Friday, July 17th, with barely a ripple at Daytona Beach. Swell's a pathetic 0.7ft from the ESE, and the cross-on breeze is making a mess of things. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th see a tiny puff of wind swell, maybe 2ft at best, but with a period so short it'll crumble on itself. The wind cleans up a bit Saturday morning with a cross-off breeze, but the waves are still too weak and small to bother with.
The whole of the following week – Monday the 20th through Thursday the 24th – is more of the same: tiny, gutless waves under 2ft and mostly poor conditions. Wednesday morning the 22nd goes glassy, but with the swell only a foot, it's a mirror, not a wave. The energy readings are stuck in the teens, so nothing's happening. The flat spell really sets in.
We finally get a little pulse on Saturday, July 25th. The morning brings 2ft from the east with a period up to 10 seconds, and it's clean under a light cross-off breeze. The combined energy climbs to 56, so there's a bit more push. It's surfable, but just barely – "ordinary" is the word. The afternoon gets a little bigger at 3ft but turns choppy again.
After that, it's back to the flatlands. Sunday the 26th through the end of the month is all tiny, weak surf with energy readings in the teens. The wind gives us a few clean moments – a glassy patch Sunday afternoon and some gentle offshore breezes – but with the swell barely a foot, you're just paddling in place. There's a wind spike on Saturday, August 1st, but that just brings lumpy chop and heavy rain.
Your Best Bet: If you absolutely have to get wet, the Saturday morning of July 25th is your only real shot. It's small (2ft from the east), but it's the cleanest and most energetic window of the entire two weeks. The light offshore will give you a chance to squeeze a few rides out of those little runners.
Water temp at Daytona Beach is sitting at a balmy 82°F to start, which is pretty average for July – a warm, flat bath.
The Bottom Line: This is a tough stretch. The consistent lack of any significant swell with only brief, weak pulses means it's a normal summer flat spell for this area. Don't hold your breath for anything exciting. Grab a board on the 25th if you're desperate, otherwise, it's a good excuse to do some board repair. Forecasts can always change, but right now, it's looking bleak.
Rusty.
