The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the Daytona Beach stretch over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough run. For the first week and a half, we're looking at a whole lot of flatness. The water's sitting at a warm 85°, which is bang on average for this time of year, but that's about the only thing that's working. The swell is barely a ripple, with the combined energy sitting at a weak 21 (moderate energy) at best, and mostly less than that. You're just not going to find a wave worth paddling for. There's a few mornings with glassy or clean conditions, like Tuesday the 25th of August and Wednesday the 26th of August, but with waves at a pathetic 0.7ft or 1.0ft, there's nothing to ride.

Things perk up a little as we head into the first week of September. On the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September, we finally see the combined swell energy jump up to a moderate 127, with a 2ft east swell running at 11 seconds. That's a bit more like it – a longer period groundswell that will have a bit more push. The wind is light offshore from the WSW, so it'll be clean. Now, 2ft at Daytona Beach is still small, and the east direction is optimum for this spot. It's a sandbar setup and fairly consistent, so there'll be a few shoulders to grovel on. Just keep in mind, with the water so warm, the crowds are always possible here.

The following morning, Thursday the 3rd of September, is a write-off with strong onshore winds. The only other half-decent window is the afternoon of Tuesday the 1st of September, where we have a 2ft east swell and a clean, cross-off breeze from the SSE. The combined energy is only 50 (weak), so it's still small and ordinary.

Honestly, there's no standout, epic session in this forecast. The best bet is the small, clean window on the morning of the 2nd of September. It's not going to be a day for the history books, but for a log or a longboard, you might find a fun little waist-high wall if you're patient. For the rest of it, you're better off finding something else to do.

Rusty.
