The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Daytona Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, we’re in for a long, flat spell. The first week and a half is pretty grim. We’ve got tiny, weak surf with poor conditions. The combined swell energy is well under 100 (anywhere from 15 to 43) for most of it, which is basically nothing. You’ll be staring at a lake. The water temp is a muggy 84°F which is bang on average for this time of year, so at least it’s warm for a paddle.
There’s a gap of about nine days with no real recommendations. The first tiny glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of the 1st of September. The swell is still only 1.0ft from the east, but the period jumps to a very long 16 seconds, and it’s glassy. The combined energy creeps up to 65, but it’s still just surfable, not good. That long period groundswell might offer a few clean lines at a sandbar, but it’s for the patient surfer only.
The real standout, if you can call it that, comes on the morning of the 3rd of September. The swell pushes up to 2ft from the east with a 12-second period, and the combined energy hits 164 (moderate wave energy). The wind is light and cross-off from the SSE, leaving it clean. It’s not a bomb, but it’s the best we’ll see. The swell is small, so it’s fine for all levels, but don’t expect a crowd because it’s Daytona. The setup is a beach break, so with that period, it might be a little straighter than ideal, but it’s rideable.
The morning of the 4th of September is similar, with 2ft east swell, glassy conditions, and energy at 149, so that’s another decent window. After that, it fades back into the small stuff.
Don’t get your hopes up too high for the long-range stuff on the 7th of September. It’s a 2ft swell from the NE, but the period is a short 7 seconds, and the energy is only 75. It’s clean in the morning, but it’s just not going to have any punch.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate for a wave, the mornings of the 3rd and 4th of September are your best bet. Otherwise, it’s a time for tinkering with your quiver and waiting for a proper swell.
Rusty.
