The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s talk about Spanish House. I’ll be honest with you, looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a real quiet stretch. There’s no proper swell on the cards, and the conditions are generally pretty ordinary. We’ve got a long gap of nothing worth paddling out for, stretching from the start right through to the morning of July 28th. That’s a solid two weeks of flat, poor surf, or just tiny, gutless waves. The energy is weak, with combined energy readings barely cracking 40 at times.
The first real glimmer, and I mean a tiny glimmer, shows up on the morning of July 28th. The wind is offshore from the west at 9 mph, which is clean. The swell is a pathetic 2 ft from the south with a period of just 5 seconds, so it’s short-period windswill. The combined energy is a weak 41. It’s surfable, but only just. It’s really only for a beginner or someone desperate for a splash. The water temp is about 84°, which is pretty normal for the time of year.
Then on the morning of July 29th, we get a similar setup. Offshore wind from the west-northwest at 9 mph, a tiny 2 ft swell from the east with a 9-second period, and combined energy of 42. Still just ordinary. The morning of the 30th of July is the pick of the lot, if you can call it that. Glassy conditions, zero wind, and a 2 ft easterly swell with an 8-second period. The energy is 52, so it’s still weak, but it’ll be clean. For a beginner or a longboarder, you could get a few fun little ones. But there’s no power, no punch.
Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so if you go, you might have it to yourself. The spot is inconsistent, so this is about as good as it gets in a flat spell. Don’t expect any sort of quality. For the rest of the window, it’s a write-off. The surf is too poor to recommend for anyone. It’s a long blank run, and for this area, that’s not unusual.
Rusty.
