The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got a look at what’s coming up for Spanish House. Let’s be straight with you – it’s a pretty slow stretch ahead. The forecast shows a lot of small, weak swell and not much in the way of clean, rideable waves. We’re looking at a real dry spell, with a solid gap of about five days from now through to Thursday the 24th where it’s basically unsurfable.
For the first few days, from Saturday the 18th right through to Wednesday morning the 23rd, it’s just poor. Onshore winds, mostly cross-onshore, choppy, and tiny swell in the 1ft to 3ft range with short, weak periods of 4 to 8 seconds. The combined energy is pitifully low, barely scratching 30-40 (27 to 39). Thursday morning the 23rd offers a brief moment of glassy conditions with a light west wind, but the swell is still only 2ft out of the east at 8 seconds. It’s flat, mate. Not worth paddling out.
The first real chance of anything surfable, and I mean *barely* surfable, comes on Thursday morning the 24th. The wind will swing to a light cross-offshore from the south, and the swell bumps up to 3ft out of the east-southeast at 8 seconds. The combined energy reaches 73, which is still weak. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a small, clean wave, but it’s just not going to be exciting. Better for a longboard or a learner to just get wet.
We get a few more similar mornings – Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th – with light cross-offshore winds and small, weak east swell around 2ft to 2ft. The water temperature is about 83°, which is bang on normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a spring suit.
The best of a pretty average bunch comes in the second week. From Sunday the 27th onward, we start seeing moderate offshore winds from the west-southwest, cleaning up the wave face nicely. The swell stays tiny though, mostly 1ft to 2ft. The big highlight is the morning of Thursday the 30th of July, and Friday the 31st of July. The wind is solid offshore, and the swell direction swings to the north-northeast, right out of Spanish House’s optimum swell direction. Combined energy is still low at 42 and 52, but the 2ft to 2ft waves with a moderate offshore wind will be clean and rideable. It’s not a standout for size, but for this spot, it’s the best you’ll get. The period is short (7 seconds), so don’t expect much push, but it’ll be a fun little session.
The morning of Saturday the 1st of August also looks OK with a 2ft north-east swell and a light cross-offshore wind, with combined energy up to 74. That’s the best energy reading in the whole forecast.
Overall, there’s no epic swell here. It’s a waiting game, with a few clean, small mornings for the dedicated longboarder. The crowd situation at Spanish House is “sometimes,” so on those clean mornings, you might have a few mates out, but it won’t be packed.
Stay safe, keep your eyes on the forecast, and don’t bother with the first week.
Rusty.
