The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Spanish House over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you, it's looking pretty bleak for a paddle. We've got a long stretch of nothing really going on, and when the swell does show up, the conditions are mostly fighting against us. Let's walk through it.
The first week, from Sunday the 23rd right through to the tail end of August, is a total write-off. We're talking tiny dribbles of swell, mostly around 0.7ft to 1ft, and the wind is all over the shop. You'll mostly see onshore or cross-onshore breezes, just making a mess of what little energy there is. Combined swell energy is weak, stuck in the teens and twenties (like 26 to 47). There are a couple of glassy moments on the 25th and 27th, but with only 0.7ft of swell, it's not even worth waxing up. It's a full-blown surf drought.
Now, as we roll into September, things start to change. On Tuesday the 1st of September, we get a pulse of groundswell. The morning sees a 1ft swell from the East with a very long period of 15 seconds, and it's glassy. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 105. While the height is tiny, that long period means there's some shape to it if you can find a bank that works. This is the first real glimmer of hope. The wind stays glassy on the morning of Wednesday the 2nd too, with a slightly bigger 2ft swell from the East, also 13 seconds, and the energy is up to a solid 197. That's the standout session for the whole forecast. It's small, but clean. If you're a beginner, this is your window. The swell direction is from the East, which is pretty close to the optimum NNE direction for this spot.
After that, the swell keeps building into Thursday the 3rd, hitting 3ft to 3ft from the East with a period of 12 seconds. The combined energy hits a strong 301 on the afternoon. But, and it's a big but, the wind swings around to a moderate cross-onshore, turning things choppy. There's energy there, but it'll be a battle. This trend continues into Friday the 4th, with a good 3ft swell in the morning (229 energy) but again, messy onshore wind by the afternoon.
Looking into the second week, from the 5th onwards, the swell drops back off and the wind stays mostly onshore or cross-shore. It's the same story: some small clean windows on the morning of the 6th and 7th with cross-offshore winds from the SW, but the swell is back down to 1ft to 2ft with weak energy (around 78-89). It's surfable, but don't get your hopes up.
So, to sum up: there's a very long dry spell to start with. The only real standout is the glassy morning on Wednesday the 2nd of September. It's small, but clean and has that long-period groundswell energy. For the rest of it, you're either looking at flat spells or wind-affected junk. This is a classic "wait and see" forecast – it’s an inconsistent spot and this run of poor conditions is pretty normal for the area.
Keep an eye on the charts, but don't hold your breath.
Rusty.
