The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week and a half or so is looking pretty bleak for a paddle. We’re talking days of tiny, weak waves with poor conditions. The wait is real. You're looking at a long gap of almost no surf worth mentioning from Sunday the 23rd of August all the way until the end of the month. There are a few pulses of energy, but they're accompanied by onshore wind that just tears things apart. It’s a patient man’s game.

Let’s run through the dates. That Sunday morning the 23rd at Spanish House, we’ve got a tiny 1ft easterly swell, but at 8 seconds it’s short and weak with a combined energy of just 34. It’s a cross-offshore breeze, which is nice, but the waves are just too small and weak to bother with. That sets the tone for the next several days: nothing over 2ft until the 30th, and even then it’s messy.

The real kicker is the wind. We get a few mornings with light breezes, like the 25th and 27th, but the swell direction is mostly east or east-northeast, which is onshore for this spot. The afternoon sea breezes pick up and ruin whatever tiny chance there was. On the 27th, we get a 0.7ft swell from the ENE with a 15-second period. The period is long, which usually means better shape, but at that height it’s just a ripple with a combined energy of 50. It’s a tease.

Now, we do finally get a bit of a pulse around the 1st of September. Tuesday morning the 1st we get 2ft from the east with a 15-second period and glassy conditions. That’s a major positive. The combined energy jumps to 195, which is still moderate but a massive improvement. It’s still not big, but it's clean. The swell direction is east, and Spanish House prefers a north-northeast optimum. So it’s not perfect, but beggars can’t be choosers. This is the best on offer for the whole outlook.

Wednesday morning the 2nd of September looks even better on paper. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the east, a 12-second period, and again glassy conditions. The combined energy hits 256. This is our standout window. The waves will have more push and the glassy wind will make it super clean. It’s still a bit small, but this is the session to target. After that, the wind swings around again, ruining things for the rest of the week.

Thursday morning the 3rd is also promising with 3ft from the east, 10-second period, and glassy conditions. The combined energy is 246. This is another good contender. But the afternoon turns to onshore chop.

If you’re an absolute beginner, the size stays manageable. The biggest we see is 4ft on Friday morning the 4th of September, but the wind is offshore then, making it clean. That could be a fun little session if you’re just getting started. It never get over 5ft for the entire period, so it’s always beginner-friendly.

The water temperature anomaly isn't mentioned, so we can't say much there.

So to wrap it up: the first week is a write-off. The real chance is on the morning of Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of September at Spanish House, when we get glassy conditions and the period is long enough to produce a decent wave. The morning of the 3rd is also a shout. After that, it’s back to small and choppy. Set your alarm for those mornings and keep your fingers crossed that the forecast holds.

Rusty.
