The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty chiming in. Looking at this spot, it’s a real bummer. For the next 16 days at Spanish House, a sandbar that’s already a bit of a no-show, we’re in for a long dry spell. The water’s a warm 85°, which is about what you’d expect for the season.
The first week is a total loss. From Thursday, July 16th, through Wednesday, July 23rd, it’s flat and hopeless. The swell is tiny – 1 foot to 3 feet – with short, weak periods. The combined energy is pathetic, sitting between 24 and 29 (weak energy). The wind is always off, either cross-on or bumpy, and the wave report says “poor surf conditions.” Don’t bother.
That gap finally breaks on Friday morning, July 24th. We get a slight bump: 2 feet from the east at 8 seconds, with a light cross-offshore wind that keeps it clean. The energy is still weak at 52, but the report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not good, but it’s the first sign of life.
The best of the whole run comes on Saturday, July 25th. The morning shows 2 feet from the east with a period of 10 seconds, giving the combined energy a nudge to 100 (moderate wave energy). The wind is light cross-shore, so it’ll be a little bumpy but not blown. For an inconsistent beginner spot, this is your only real shot. The afternoon is a mess with cross-on wind and chop.
After that, it’s back to the same. Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th are weak, with energy dropping to 71 and then 26. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings (July 28th and 29th) offer clean, 2-foot to 2-foot east swell with periods of 8-9 seconds, but the energy is only 51 to 62, so it’s ordinary. The pattern repeats through the end of the month – Thursday and Friday mornings (July 30th and 31st) show the same 2-foot to 2-foot east swell with a light offshore wind, giving clean 2-foot waves. The energy is 47 to 50, but it’s tiny.
So, bottom line: there’s no real swell coming. If you’re desperate, target Saturday morning, July 25th, for the best chance at a weak, small wave. Or grab one of those clean, small mornings on July 24th, 28th, 29th, 30th, or 31st. But don’t hold your breath. This spot is in a flat spell, and it’s staying that way. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
