The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim to start for Spanish House. We’ve got a long stretch of small, messy surf and poor conditions, but there is a glimmer of something better way out there in the second week.
For the first week and a half, from Saturday, August 22nd right through to Tuesday, September 1st, it’s a write-off. The swell is tiny, mostly between 0.7ft and 2ft, with weak energy readings (most are under 100, peaking at 150). The winds are often onshore, cross-onshore, or just cross, so the surface is choppy and messy. The water temp is a warm 86°F with a normal anomaly of 0.9°F, so it’s about average for this time of year, but that won’t help the surf. There’s nothing here to get excited about. A couple of mornings show glassy conditions, but the swell is simply too small to do anything with.
The first real chance of something rideable arrives on Wednesday, September 3rd. The morning brings a 3ft swell from the east, with a moderate energy reading of 231. We’ve got a light cross-offshore wind from the SW, which should keep things clean. The period is 10 seconds, so it’s a decent groundswell, but nothing too crazy. This is a beginner spot, so 3ft is right in the zone. Keep an eye on this one.
The standout, without a doubt, is Saturday, September 5th. The morning session is the pick of the whole forecast. We’re looking at a 5ft swell from the NE, with a strong energy reading of 445. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SW, meaning clean, glassy conditions. The period is 10 seconds, so good shape and power. This is a solid wave for Spanish House, but at 5ft, it’s starting to push the limit for beginners. It’s still fine for intermediates and up. The morning is the only window though, as the onshore kicks in by the afternoon and ruins it.
Friday, September 4th, is a runner-up. The morning has a 5ft NE swell (313 energy) with clean cross-offshore winds, same story. The period is a shorter 8 seconds, so it will be a bit weaker and more crumbly, but still very surfable.
Sunday, September 6th, the morning offers a final chance. A 4ft NE swell (251 energy) with a clean offshore wind from the WSW. Period is 9 seconds. It’s a solid end to the run, but the best is definitely Saturday morning.
So, to sum it up: forget the first week and a half. The best surf on offer is the morning of Saturday, September 5th, with a 5ft NE swell, clean conditions, and strong energy. If you can’t make that, Friday the 4th morning is the next best, and then Sunday the 6th morning. Don’t expect any crowds to be a problem at this spot, but it’s inconsistent, so you’ll need to be patient when it’s on.
Rusty.
