The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Spanish House over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, man, it’s a pretty quiet stretch. Spanish House is an exposed sandbar that’s fussy – it’s inconsistent and tends to need a decent push from the NNE to really light up, and we’re not getting that at all. The first week is mostly small, weak, and bumpy, with hardly anything worth paddling for. There’s a long gap of straight-up poor surf right through the first week, morning to afternoon, day after day. The swell barely gets above 1 ft and the period is short, around 8 seconds, so it’s all wind chop and closeout slop. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making it messy.
We finally start to see a tiny flicker of life on the morning of Friday August 28 – still small at 1 ft, but the swell direction swings to ENE and the period stretches to a long 13 seconds. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, and the water turns clean. The combined energy is still low, only 55, but that glassy window is the first time it’s even remotely user-friendly. The following morning, Saturday August 29, is also glassy with a touch more size – 2 ft from the east, period still short at 8 seconds, energy up to 73. The wave quality is still described as ordinary, but at least you won’t be fighting wind.
The standout window comes on Monday August 31 morning. The swell pushes to 4 ft from the ESE, period is still short at 5 seconds, but the combined energy jumps to a moderate 130, and the wind is glassy again. That’s the best on offer – it’s small, short-period beach break stuff, but if you’re desperate, that morning has the most push and the cleanest surface. Just know it’s going to be fat and fast due to the short period, and it might close out a lot. Best for beginners on a foamie, not for anyone looking for proper barrels.
After that, it drops back down into the doldrums: tiny swell, onshore winds, and poor conditions all the way through to the end of the forecast period on Saturday September 5. The second week is flat and forgettable.
Honestly, if you’re a surfer waiting for a proper session, this stretch is pretty barren. The consistent spot doesn’t fire often, and this run shows why. Keep an eye on the charts, it tends not to stay this quiet forever.
