Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you – this 16-day window for Spanish House is looking pretty grim. There’s a big gap at the start with absolutely nothing worth paddling out for. The first few days are all blown out or tiny, and it’s not until Wednesday 8th July that we even see a hint of something surfable.
Straight up, there’s no standout session here. The swell stays tiny – mostly 1 ft to 2 ft – and the wind is nearly always onshore or cross-onshore, chopping everything up. The water temp is 82° F, which is about average for the time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing if you do go for a flop.
Let’s walk through it. From Saturday 4th July through Tuesday 7th July, it’s a write-off. Waves are 1 ft to 2 ft, winds are all wrong, and the combined energy is weak (36 or less). You’re looking at risk of thunderstorms and cross-off or onshore slop. No point even looking.
Wednesday 8th July morning is the first half-decent window. Swell bumps to 2 ft from the ESE with a 8-second period – short period windswell. The wind swings W at 3 mph, which is offshore and clean. Combined energy hits 56 (weak). It’s surfable but very ordinary. If you’re desperate, you could get a few knee-high sliders. The spot is a sandbar, beginner-friendly, but inconsistent and crowds are possible. The swell direction (ESE) is not ideal – the optimum here is NNE – so the waves won’t be lined up well.
Thursday 9th and Friday 10th July mornings are similar – 2 ft, clean with light cross-off winds, short period. Energy around 49-52. Still ordinary. Saturday 11th July morning is the same story: 2 ft, cross-off, clean, but again very average.
Then from Saturday afternoon onwards, it gets messy again with onshores and choppy conditions right through to the end of the window. Even when the swell lifts to 3 ft-3 ft around 16th-18th July, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the period drops to a shocking 5-7 seconds – junk. The combined energy does climb to 170 on Friday 17th July afternoon, which is moderate, but the conditions are just poor.
Bottom line: there’s no true standout. The best you’ll get is a couple of mornings like Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th July with clean but tiny, weak waves. For beginners, the max 2 ft is fine. For everyone else, leave the board at home. It’s not looking like it’ll stay this poor forever – forecasts can change – but for now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
