The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – we’re looking at a pretty flat run for the next couple of weeks. The surf is going to be a struggle, so temper those expectations.
The outlook starts on Thursday, 16 July, and right from the get-go, it’s a tough scene. We’ve got tiny, poor surf conditions with no real energy to speak of. The swell is barely a ripple, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, making a mess of things. This pattern looks set to stick around for the entire 16-day window.
There’s really only one spot to talk about, and that’s Jetty Park. It’s a beach/jetty setup that’s inconsistent, and it rarely offers anything decent. The water temp is sitting at 86°F with a plus 1°F anomaly, so it’s a touch warmer than average for this time of year, but that’s about the only bright spot.
Through Thursday and Friday, the swell is tiny – 0.7ft to 1ft – with a short period of 8 seconds from the ESE. The morning winds are light and cross-off, offering a clean surface, but there’s just no push. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting around 10 to 33 (weak energy). It’s basically a lake.
Over the weekend, Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th, we see a slight bump in swell height to 2ft on Saturday morning and 3ft on Saturday afternoon, but the period drops to a horrible 4-5 seconds from the SSE. That’s windswell junk, and the wind picks up to 12 mph, creating a choppy, cross-shore mess. The combined energy hits 34 (weak energy), but it’s not surfable. Sunday is even worse, with the swell dropping back to 0.7ft.
The whole first week is a write-off. The swell never gets above 3ft, and the period stays short, mostly 8 seconds or less. The winds are either cross-off in the mornings, offering clean but tiny waves, or onshore in the afternoons, making it choppy. The combined energy values are all under 100 (weak energy), confirming there’s no real power in the water.
As we move into the second week, from Monday the 21st through to the end of the month, nothing changes. The swell remains tiny, between 1.0ft and 3ft, with the same short periods. The wind pattern is the same: clean mornings with light cross-off breezes, then onshore slop in the afternoons. The combined energy stays weak, never exceeding 90 (weak energy). Jetty Park is the only option, and it’s not a good one.
Honestly, there’s no standout here. Not a single day offers good surf. The swell is too small, the period is too short, and the wind is rarely ideal. With the break being inconsistent and rarely breaking, this is a blank run. It’s the kind of stretch where you’re better off finding something else to do. The setup is a beach and jetty, so if the wind really cranks, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, but that’s about it.
This is one of those times where you just have to wait. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a lean period.
Rusty.
