The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the local forecast for Jetty Park. I gotta be straight with you – the next two weeks are looking pretty flat and quiet. There’s no real swell on the cards, and the wind is mostly going to be messing things up. We’ve got a long stretch of poor-to-ordinary conditions, so don't get your hopes up for any proper waves.
The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 87°F.
The first few days are almost a write-off. Tuesday morning, August 18th, we’ve got a tiny 1ft ESE swell, but it’s short-period at 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 25. The wind is offshore, so it’s clean, but there’s just nothing to ride. The whole week is like that: tiny, weak swells with onshore or cross-shore winds kicking up chop in the afternoons. The best you’ll get is a brief glassy moment on Thursday morning, 20th August, with a 1ft swell, but it’s still just a dribble.
We do see a small bump starting on Sunday the 23rd of August. The afternoon shows a 2ft ESE swell, and the period jumps to 12 seconds with a combined energy of 149. That’s the most energy we’ll see, but it’s still a small, weak swell, and it’s coming with a strong cross-onshore wind from the SE at 15 mph, making it choppy. It’s a no-go.
The following week is more of the same. There’s a moment on Thursday morning, 27th August, where we get a 2ft E swell with a 13-second period and offshore winds from the WSW. The combined energy is 107, which is moderate, and the wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s clean, but it’s not going to be any kind of standout. Friday morning, 28th August, is similar with a 2ft E swell, 10-second period, and light offshore winds. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but that’s not saying much.
Into September, we get a hint of a longer-period swell. On Tuesday, 1st September, the morning has a 1ft E swell with a 15-second period. The combined energy is 70, which is weak, and while it’s clean, the swell is just too small to do anything with. The period is long, so it’s a groundswell, but there’s no power behind it.
The standout, if you can call it that, is a very small window. For the most reliable, cleanest option, look to Thursday morning, 27th August, at Jetty Park. It’s a 2ft E swell, offshore wind, and the energy is moderate at 107. It’s not going to be a classic, but it’s the only time the stars semi-align. The break is inconsistent, and it can get crowded, so bring patience.
After that, the forecast dries up again. The last entry on Wednesday, 2nd September, shows a 2ft E swell with a 13-second period and cross-shore wind, keeping it messy. For the whole 16-day window, there’s nothing that gets me excited. If you’re desperate, you might find a knee-high roller on a clean morning, but otherwise, it’s a time to wax the longboard and stare at the horizon.
Stay safe, and don’t force it.
Rusty.
