The Lowdown
Alright, I’m gonna level with you—this stretch of coast is in a real funk right now. The water’s a touch warmer than usual, sitting around 87°, but that’s about the only thing that’s doing us any favours.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, I’ve got to tell you, there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. The only break that even shows up in the forecast is Jetty Park, but it’s a real struggle. It’s an inconsistent beginner spot that’s fairly exposed, and the best swell direction for it is SSE. Problem is, the swell just isn’t showing up.
We kick off Friday the 21st of August with some glassy conditions in the morning, but the swell is a tiny 1.0ft out of the east with a weak 8-second period. The combined energy is a measly 16 (weak energy), and the wave comment is plain: “poor surf conditions.” That pattern just repeats day after day. Saturday morning the 22nd goes clean with a light cross-offshore, but again, 1.0ft at 9 seconds and 20 energy. Sunday the 23rd morning turns glassy again, but still 1.0ft at 8 seconds. In the afternoon, we finally see a bump: 2ft at 12 seconds from the ESE, energy jumps to 117 (moderate), but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy, so it’s messy.
The whole first week is a write-off. Monday the 24th through Thursday the 27th is all tiny 0.7ft to 1.0ft east swell, short periods, and mostly cross-onshore winds. Friday the 28th morning is the closest we get to something rideable: 2ft at 9 seconds, 107 energy, and glassy conditions. The comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and the score is a 1 out of 10. That’s the best of the whole 16 days, and it’s still barely a blip.
After that, from Saturday the 29th of August all the way through to Saturday the 5th of September, it’s more of the same: 0.7ft to 2ft east swell, short periods, onshore winds, and poor surf conditions. There’s a couple of glassy mornings on the 4th and 5th of September, but the swell is down to 1.0ft and 0.7ft, energy in the teens, so it’s flat as a pancake.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, the only shred of hope is Friday the 28th of August morning at Jetty Park. It’s a beginner spot, so 2ft is manageable, the glassy wind will make it look clean, and you might get a little knee-high ripple. But don’t expect much. The rest of the run is a total bust. With the beach/jetty setup and such weak, short-period swell, this is more of a kiteboarding situation than a surfing one.
Keep an eye on it, but for now, I’d save the wax.
