Table - best surf conditions forecast for Jetty Park over the next 16 days.
G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We've got a long, dry spell ahead before anything even remotely surfable shows up.
Looking at the whole run, it's a real bust. From the 8th of July right through to the morning of the 19th of July, it's just a parade of poor surf conditions. Tiny, weak swell and mostly onshore or cross winds. There's a few clean moments here and there – like the mornings of the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 17th, with light cross-offshore breezes – but the swell is just too small to do anything with. We're talking ankle-snappers of 1.0ft to 2ft, with weak energy readings (22 to 51), and periods under 9 seconds. It's a flat spell, plain and simple. You'd be better off checking the wind forecast for a kite session, because the wave quality is just not there for surfing.
Then, finally, on the morning of Sunday the 19th of July, things start to flicker back to life. Jetty Park will see a little bump of swell, with the summary height hitting 3ft from the SE, and a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy pushes up to 67 (moderate), which is the best we've seen in over a week. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the SSW at 15 km/h, so the surface should be clean. It's not going to be firing, but it's surfable in a very ordinary sort of way. The afternoon looks similar, with the swell bumping up to 4ft and the energy to 77, still with that same clean cross-offshore wind. For a spot that's "inconsistent", this is a rare little window of opportunity just to get wet.
The following Monday morning (20th July) the wind is a bit stronger (25 km/h) but still cross-off, with the swell dropping back to 3ft. The standout moment might actually be Monday afternoon – the swell drops to 3ft, but the energy reading jumps way up to 187 (moderate) and the wind goes glassy, dead calm. That's a rare, clean vibe. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing to worry about on that front.
After that, it's back to the doldrums. The wind picks up again, and the swell fades out through the rest of the week. The 22nd and 23rd see fresh offshore winds, but the swell is down to 1.0ft – barely a ripple.
So, to sum it up: the only real window to grab a board is from the 19th into the 20th of July. It's not going to be epic, but it's the best on offer. The rest of the fortnight is a write-off. Keep an eye on it, because forecasts can change, but for now, don't hold your breath.
Rusty.
