The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Ocean City - 8th Street. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with basically nothing rideable for the better part of the next two weeks. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t pop up until the very end.
The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. But the swell... it’s just not happening. The first chunk of the forecast is a write-off. From Thursday the 20th right through to the end of August, it’s all tiny, weak waves with poor quality. You’ve got a lot of days with a combined energy that barely registers – mostly in the teens to low 70s – and the wind is all over the place, usually cross or onshore, messing up what little bump there is.
There’s a brief tease on Monday the 24th with a clean offshore wind from the WNW and a long-period 12-second swell from the SE, but the waves are only 1.0 ft to 1 ft. The energy is weak (57 for the morning), and it’s just not enough to get excited about. It’s surfable, but barely.
The real standout – and I mean the only one worthy of a mention – is on Tuesday morning, September 1st. We’ve got a 3 ft swell from the ENE, and it’s coming in with zero wind. Glassy conditions. The combined energy hits 109, which is at least in the moderate range. That’s the best we’ll see. The period is short at 5 seconds, so it won’t have much punch, but with the wind flat, it’ll be clean. This is a beginner-friendly break anyway, and 3 ft is perfect for that crew. Keep an eye on this one, but we’re talking over a week away, so temper the expectations.
Beyond that, the final couple of days in the outlook show a bit more energy (180 on the 4th of September) but the wind is a mess, coming from the ENE at 12-19 mph, creating a cross-shore chop. It’s not going to be pretty.
So, the honest truth? If you’re desperate for a paddle, September 1st morning is your only real shot. Otherwise, the board stays in the shed. This kind of blank run is more normal for the area, but forecasts can change. Keep your chin up.
Rusty.
