The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s call it like it is: Ocean City - 8th Street is looking at a whole lot of nothing for the next 16 days. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and it’s a beach-and-reef setup that’s more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer for most of the run.
The first real pulse doesn’t show until Sunday, July 19th. That’s a week of waiting. You get a 4ft S swell, with cross-offshore wind from the W, so it’ll be clean. But the period is only 6 seconds, so it’s weak and sloppy. The combined energy is 109 (moderate), but it’s still a poor day. Water temp is about average for the season.
Monday morning, July 20th, is your best bet. A 3ft SSE swell with a 9-second period, light N winds, and clean conditions. Still small, but it’s the most surfable window.
The only standout is Thursday, July 23rd. The swell hits 6ft from the E, with a combined energy of 320 (strong). But the wind is cross onshore, choppy, and messy. For a beginner spot, it’s too big. For experts, it’s just blown out. Crowds are sometimes a factor, but with those conditions, it’ll be empty.
The last week is a mix of 3ft to 5ft SSE swell, but with cross and cross-onshore wind from the S and SSW, keeping it lumpy. The 28th has a 4ft swell with a fresh 30 km/h cross-on breeze, and the energy is 382, but it’s a messy lump. Not worth the effort.
If you’re waiting for a clean session, the morning of Sunday, July 19th, or Monday, July 20th, are your only real shots. Everything else is flat, blown out, or both. It’s a long stretch of small surf, and forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a tough run.
Rusty.
