The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be real honest about the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch ahead, so don’t be in a rush to wax up.
The whole 16-day window is a tough one for Ocean City - 8th Street. I’ve combed through the numbers, and there’s just no solid surf on the cards. We’re looking at a long, dry spell starting now and running all the way through until the end of the month. The only tiny flicker of life comes right at the start of September.
The first real glimmer of something surfable pops up on the morning of Tuesday, the 1st of September. We’ll see a weak, short-period S swell pushing in at about 3 ft, with a period of only 6 seconds. The combined energy will be barely moderate (84). The cross-offshore wind from the WSW will keep it clean, but it’s just not enough to get excited about. The afternoon sees the energy tick up a bit (111), but the wind gets stronger and the conditions are still pretty ordinary.
Later that week, on the morning of Wednesday, the 2nd of September, we get a slight shift. A longer-period SE swell arrives at 1 ft with a 12 second period, which is a real tease. The combined energy stays moderate (116), and the clean, cross-off wind from the N will have the surface glassy. It’s surfable, but with that tiny size, it’s a long paddle for a short ride.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no worries there with a wetsuit.
Honestly, folks, this is about as quiet as it gets. There are no standout options, no big swells to circle on the calendar. If you’ve got a kite, this might be more interesting than a surfboard, because the paddle-surfing is looking like a whole lot of effort for very little reward. The run of poor conditions is pretty normal for this area when the swell window shuts down, so don't lose hope. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d say keep the board in the bag.
Rusty.
