The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it, but I gotta be straight with you right from the jump – this is a tough one. We’re looking at a real long, flat spell ahead for the Strathmere area, and it’s going to be a waiting game.
Right now, the water is a touch warmer than normal for July, sitting at 75°, but that’s about the only thing that’s gonna feel good. The first half of this forecast window is a write-off. We’re seeing tiny, weak, and mostly poor surf from Wednesday the 15th all the way through the morning of Sunday the 19th. The swell is tiny, the period is all over the place, and frankly, you’re better off doing something else. There’s a gap of about four days here with nothing worth paddling for.
Now, Sunday the 19th afternoon finally shows a pulse of life. We get a 4ft (1.2m) swell from the south with a 7-second period. The combined energy hits 220 (moderate), and with a light offshore wind from the west, it’ll be clean. It’s not pumping, but it’s surfable. The best of the bunch, though, is looking like Tuesday the 21st afternoon. The swell builds to 6ft (1.7m) from the south, with a combined energy of 278 (moderate). It’s a bit on the bigger side, so beginners might want to sit this one out, but for the rest of you, that’s the pick. The wind is offshore and gentle, so it’ll be clean. The swell is short-period though, so don’t expect any long, grinding walls.
After that, the energy drops off again. Monday the 22nd has some clean, but small waves, and then from Thursday the 23rd all the way through to the end of the month, we’re back to mostly poor, cross-onshore, and choppy conditions. A few mornings like the 25th and 29th might offer a tiny, clean option, but the swell is really weak (energy in the 60s and 70s). It’s a long stretch of very ordinary conditions.
So, to sum it up: the standout is absolutely Tuesday the 21st of July afternoon. Hit that window for the biggest, cleanest surf we’ll see. The Sunday the 19th afternoon is a solid second option. For the rest of it, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
