The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of flat, weak conditions ahead, so patience is the name of the game.

For the first week, from Thursday the 16th through to the end of the month, it’s mostly a write-off. The swell is tiny, barely making it to 0.3ft to 2ft, and the energy is weak. The combined energy figures are in the single digits or low double digits (values like 5, 11, 32) – that’s just not enough to get excited about. Winds are a mixed bag of cross-off and cross-shore breezes, but with no real swell to work with, it doesn’t matter. The water is sitting at 73° – that’s about normal for the time of year, a touch warmer than average.

There’s a small window of hope tucked away at the end. On Saturday the 25th, the morning shows a little pulse of swell. Over at The Cove at Sandy Hook, we’ve got a 2ft swell creeping in from the SE with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is light and cross-off from the W, which should keep things clean. The combined energy climbs to 117, which is a moderate bump. It’s still not big, but it’s the best we’ll see. The score says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – meaning it’s rideable, but don’t expect barrels. For a beginner spot, this is about as good as it gets in this flat spell.

After that, it drops back down again. The 31st has a similar look with a 3ft SE swell and a clean cross-off wind, which might offer another small window, but it’s still just ordinary.

The main takeaway? The first 10 days are a bust. If you’re desperate, the morning of the 25th is your only real shot. Otherwise, grab a different board, because the ocean isn’t giving us much.

Rusty.
