The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s coming up for North Jetty. To be straight with you, this isn’t a period for the history books. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and often messy surf to get through before anything worth getting excited about shows up.
For the first two weeks, from Thursday the 20th of August all the way through to around the start of September, it’s a real struggle. The swell is tiny, mostly hanging around 0.7ft to 1ft from the ESE. Wave energy is weak, often below 30 (26-57 range). Even when we get a few hours of glassy offshore wind – like Saturday the 22nd afternoon with a 0.7ft ESE swell and a 13-second period – the waves are just too small to bother with. It's surfable but very ordinary. The water temp sits at 86°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the water’s nice, but the surf isn’t.
The first real glimmer of hope comes right at the tail end of the period. On Thursday the 3rd of September, we finally see some size. The morning looks good: a 6ft swell from the ENE, with a short period of 7 seconds, and glassy conditions. Combined energy hits 269, which is moderate, and the wind is calm – that’s a green light. This is big enough for intermediates, but just over 5ft, so beginners might want to sit this one out. The afternoon gets messy as a 12 mph cross-shore wind kicks up, so surf the morning.
That Thursday morning is the standout. The next morning, Friday the 4th, is also a strong option: a 5ft ENE swell (7-second period) with a clean 6 mph cross-offshore wind. Combined energy is 256, again moderate. Get on it early.
Forget the rest of the window. The north coast is quiet for ages, but that first week of September offers a couple of proper dawn patrols. North Jetty is often crowded, so expect company on those clean mornings.
