Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for North Jetty.
Overall, the surf story here is a pretty lean one. We’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead. The first real chance of anything rideable won’t pop up until Wednesday the 8th of July, and even then it’s hardly going to set the world on fire. The swell hangs around in the ankle to knee-high range for most of the period, with a lot of cross-onshore chop cleaning up only when the wind swings offshore.
The water temp is sitting at 85°, which is about 2° warmer than average for this time of year – that’s notable, feels like a warm bath out there.
Let’s run through the days. Starting on Thursday the 2nd of July and all the way through to Tuesday the 7th, the conditions are just plain poor. Tiny swell, mostly cross-onshore winds, and the wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. On Saturday morning the 4th there’s a brief window of glass, but with swell only 1 ft from the ESE, there’s nothing to ride.
Wednesday the 8th of July is where we see a tiny glimmer. The morning brings a gentle offshore from the SW, and the surf report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” Swell is 2 ft from the SE with a period of 6 seconds – short period, weak energy (51). This is really only for the keenest on a longboard, but at least it’s clean.
Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th offer similar morning windows with offshore winds and small, weak SE swell. The energy stays low, in the 48 to 62 range. Not a standout by any means.
Saturday the 11th of July is the closest we get to anything half-decent. The afternoon shows 3 ft of SE swell, period of 8 seconds, with a light S cross-offshore wind and clean conditions. The combined energy is 128 – that’s moderate energy, but the biggest issue is the swell direction. This break needs swell from the NE, so this SE swell isn’t lining up right. For a beach/pier setup, the short period and straight-on angle will make for a weak, crumbly wave. Still, if you’re desperate, the afternoon might offer a few grovelly lefts.
After the 11th, the surf fades back into the doldrums. From Sunday the 12th right through to the end of the forecast on Friday the 17th, we’re looking at poor conditions again. Swell stays between 2 ft and 3 ft, mostly from the SE or ESE, with a lot of cross-onshore wind. Energy levels are weak, often in the 30s and 40s.
Honestly, there are no true standouts here. The best on offer is the afternoon of Saturday the 11th of July, but that’s a weak recommendation. For beginners, even the 3 ft waves are okay, but the poor quality and wrong swell direction mean it’s not a day to get excited about. The setup here looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer given the persistent onshore wind and small swell.
It’s a flat spell. All we can do is keep an eye on the charts. Forecasts change. Hang in there.
