The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and North Jetty is looking pretty flat and sad for the next couple of weeks. I’ve been looking over everything, and honestly, there’s just no swell to get stoked on. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny waves and ordinary conditions ahead.
Right now, on Friday the 17th, the water is warm, about 84°, which is normal for this time of year. But the surf is a weak 1ft out of the ESE with a short 8-second period. The energy is a low 17, and with a cross-shore SE wind blowing at 12 mph, it’s just a poor, choppy mess.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are basically flat. You might see a ripple, but it’s not surfable. The wind goes light and clean, but there’s no ocean to work with. Energy is as low as 3.
From Monday the 20th to Wednesday the 22nd, we see a tiny bump, but it’s still no good. Wednesday morning the 22nd gives us a light offshore wind from the SW at 9 mph, and the swell is a pathetic 1ft. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. Wednesday afternoon sees a lift to 4ft out of the SE, but the period is a terrible 5 seconds and the wind is cross-off. Still poor.
Thursday morning the 23rd is the best it gets. Swell is 2ft out of the SE, period stretches to 8 seconds, and the energy hits 51. The wind is light offshore from the WSW at 9 mph, so it’s clean. The notes say “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a 1 out of 10. It’s surfable, but barely.
After that, it’s a flat, boring run all the way to the first of August. The swell never gets above 2ft, periods are short, and the energy stays in the teens and twenties. The wind is often clean, but you can’t ride what isn’t there. The biggest energy we see is 69 on Saturday morning the 25th, but that’s with a 2ft, 8-second E swell and a cross-shore wind. Not worth the paddle.
There are no standout sessions here. A couple of mornings are clean, but the swell is too small. If you’ve got a kite, those afternoon sea breezes might give you a pull, but for a surfboard, this is a tough stretch. Keep the wax dry and wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
