The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. I’ll shoot it to you straight – the surf is a tough sell right now. We’re staring at a long, flat start with almost nothing to ride for the first week or so. Wave energy is weak, all below 100 (25 to 83), and the swell heights are tiny – mostly 0.6ft to 1ft. You’ll be waiting a while.
We finally see a little breathe of life on Monday, August 31st. The early morning has surfable but very ordinary waves with a 2ft ESE swell. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean, but there’s no power. That afternoon the swell picks up to 0.9ft but with a long period of 18 seconds and combined energy of 151 – that’s a long-period groundswell trying to push in, but the size is still too small to make a difference.
Tuesday, September 1st, is your best bet of the whole outlook. The morning session at North Jetty is the one to chase. It’s glassy – totally flat wind – with a 1ft swell from the ESE at a period of 16 seconds. The energy is moderate at 122. It’s not big, but that long period will give you some clean, peeling lines if you’re patient. The offshore wind is SW and it’s dead calm, so it’ll be silky. Water temp is 84°, and with the anomaly of +0.4°, that’s about average for this time of year.
After that, it’s back to small and clean mornings Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd – waist-high sets at 2ft to 3ft – but the energy is inconsistent. Thursday afternoon sees a 3ft ESE swell with a 12-second period, but the cross-shore wind messes with the face.
If you’re looking for something in the second week, the glassy mornings on September 4th, 5th, and 6th are your best. That Friday the 4th morning has a 2ft E swell with an 11-second period and 140 energy under glassy conditions – might give you a fun longboard wave. But nothing here is for experts. The biggest swell hits about 3ft, and that’s a short-period 4-second windswell. Beginners will be fine with the height, but the quality is low.
It’s a rough run. We’re looking at about nine days of barely surfable conditions before a few clean windows show up. For kiteboarding, those stronger afternoon winds and the beach/pier setup might actually be more interesting than paddling out. For us wave riders, stick to the morning glass-offs and keep your hopes in check.
Rusty.
