The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for North Jetty.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a slow start. We’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead before anything worth paddling out for shows up. For the next week and a half, from Monday the 17th of August right through to Thursday the 27th of August, it’s mostly small, weak, and pretty ordinary. Lots of days with poor surf conditions. You'll see some weak swell energy, mostly under 100, with heights barely reaching 2ft and short periods – not really doing much. Winds are a mixed bag, but the swell just isn't there. You might find a tiny clean wave on a few mornings, but it’ll be frustrating.

Now, things finally start to change around Friday the 28th of August. We get a bit of a pulse. Thursday afternoon the 27th gets glassy with a small bump, but it’s the Friday that wakes things up. Friday morning the 28th brings in a 5ft swell from the NE, with a moderate energy reading (330) – that’s solid. It’s a bit short period at 6 seconds, but the wind is light and clean. Friday afternoon turns glassy with the swell pushing 5ft and energy up to 398. That’s the first real standout of the forecast.

Saturday the 29th looks like the pick of the run. Morning starts with offshore winds and a 6ft NE swell – period bumps up to 7 seconds, and energy is 381. By the afternoon, it’s 7ft from the NE with a gentle offshore and energy hitting 467. This is proper surf. It’s getting up there in size though – over 5ft means it’s no longer for beginners, and at 7ft, it’s getting into expert territory, especially with that short period making it dumpy. The wind staying offshore is a huge plus for clean waves at this exposed beach/pier setup.

Sunday the 30th still has some decent leftover energy – morning sees a 5ft NE swell with offshore wind, but it’s a step down. By the afternoon, it’s dropping. After that, Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September fade back into small, weaker conditions with onshore winds creeping in.

The water temp is sitting at 84°, which is bang on average for this time of year – no weird anomalies here. North Jetty is a fairly consistent spot, so this long stretch of nothing is a bit of a drag, but that Friday-Saturday window makes up for it. Just don't be a beginner on Saturday – that one’s for the experienced crew.

Crowds are often a thing here, so expect company on those good days.

This is Rusty, signing off.
