The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty checkin’ in from the shoreline. Let’s look at what we’ve got cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Look, I’m gonna be straight with you — the next 16 days are a tough stretch. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands. After a tiny window of surfable waves on Monday the 17th, it’s basically a ghost town for almost a week until Tuesday the 25th. That’s a long gap, so don’t hold your breath.
The only real glimmer in this whole outlook is Flies itself. It’s a beach and jetty setup, and it’s fairly consistent, but that doesn’t mean much when the quality is this sparse.
Monday morning, August 17th is the first shot. There’s a short-period, 5ft swell from the south, but the wind is howling out of the SSE at 19 mph, cross-on and lumpy. The water is 75°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate (194). Honestly, it’s poor surf. The afternoon clears up — glassy conditions with a 6ft south swell, slight period bump to 7 seconds, and moderate energy (255). It’s surfable, but only just.
Tuesday morning, August 18th sees a drop to 3ft from the SSE. NNW wind at 6 mph is cross-off, so it’s clean. Combined energy is weak (86). It’s ordinary, but at least you can get wet.
Then we hit a dead zone. From Wednesday the 19th all the way through to Monday the 24th, the swell is tiny — under 2ft — with poor conditions, strong onshores, or just flat. The energy readings are pitiful, mostly below 30. Don’t bother.
Tuesday, August 25th is the standout. The morning brings a 4ft south swell with a clean offshore wind from the NW at 9 mph. Combined energy is a moderate 105. The conditions are clean and the waves are surfable. It’s not pumping, but it’s the best we’ve got. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 5ft from the SSW, but the wind swings cross-on and the quality drops.
After that, the swell tries to build again around Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th, with 5ft and 3ft swells, but the wind is cross-on and lumpy, and the energy is moderate to strong (382 on Wednesday morning). The period is short — 8 seconds — so it’s just messy. Not worth your time.
Friday, August 28th brings a bigger groundswell from the southeast, 4ft with a long period of 14 seconds. The combined energy is very strong (788), but the wind is a fresh cross-shore at 22 mph, making it lumpy and choppy. That’s a pass for paddle surfing — looks more like a kite day.
The final days of the month and into September are flat or blown out. Tiny swells, weak energy, and no clean windows.
So, to sum it up: your best bet is Tuesday morning, August 25th at Flies. That’s your one real standout. Clean, offshore, 4ft south swell. It’s not epic, but it’s the only thing worth paddling out for. The rest of the stretch is a write-off.
Rusty.
