The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s happening at Flies over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, it’s a tough run. We’ve got a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions ahead, with only a few moments that might get you out of the water. The first decent look doesn’t roll in until Sunday morning, the 19th of July. That’s a few days of waiting.
The first few days are a write-off. Saturday the 18th is all onshore wind and messy, small surf – not worth paddling for. Then Sunday the 19th finally shows a bit of life. We get a clean, offshore breeze from the NW, with a 4ft SSW swell, period around 7 seconds. It’s not big, but the wave energy is moderate, and the wind is clean. That morning session is the best of the first week, but the waves are still pretty ordinary. The afternoon holds up too, with a 4ft S swell and clean offshore wind.
Monday the 20th is small and clean in the morning with a 3ft S swell, but the energy is weak. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Then we hit a real gap. From Tuesday the 21st through to the end of the month, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, and the swell is small or messy. The only standout is Wednesday the 22nd of July, when the swell jumps up to 8ft from the south, with a 9-second period. That’s a lot of energy – a strong, powerful swell. But it’s a double-edged sword: the wind is cross-offshore in the morning, which keeps it clean, but the swell is big enough that it’s only for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets a bit cross-shore and choppy. For experts, the morning of the 22nd is the best on offer in the whole outlook.
After that, it drops off fast. By Thursday the 23rd, it’s down to 5ft and the wind is okay, but the energy is dropping. By the end of the month, it’s tiny and onshore again.
The water temperature is around 72°, which is about average for the time of year here.
So, to sum it up: Sunday the 19th morning is your clean, small option for a fun session. Wednesday the 22nd morning is the big one – powerful, clean, but only for the crew who can handle it. After that, it’s a long wait with very little on offer. Even the start of August looks quiet.
Rusty out.
