Righto, let’s have a look at what’s brewing at Flies.
First up, the honest truth: there’s nothing worth paddling out for in the first week and a bit. It’s a pretty grim run from Sunday the 5th right through until late on Friday the 10th, with weak, short-period bump running at tiny sizes, all cross or cross-onshore winds keeping things messy. You’re looking at combined wave energy figures in the low double digits – just enough to disappoint you. Add in a 25 mph blow on Monday the 6th and it’s a hard pass for anyone who actually wants to catch a wave.
The first chance of anything resembling a surf comes Saturday morning the 11th. The swell picks up a bit to 4ft out of the south, with a period of 8 seconds and wave energy climbing to 186. The wind is cross-offshore from the NNW and that gives clean conditions. But honestly, it’s only a 1 out of 10 situation – surfable, but ordinary. The afternoon sees the wave energy hit 215 but the wind swings cross-on, so it turns to chop.
Sunday the 12th offers a little moment of calm: the morning is clean with cross-offshore wind, though the 2ft south swell is weak. The afternoon goes glassy, with winds dropping to 3 mph and wave energy down to 50. That glass-off might tempt you for a few knee-high wobbles.
From Monday the 13th onward it’s back into the wilderness of cross-shore junk and low energy. Tuesday the 14th is almost flat with wave energy of just 1 and 4.
The first proper standout appears on Saturday morning the 18th. Swell pushes up to 7ft from the south with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy leaps to 689 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is due onshore, straight from the SSE at 9 mph, so it’s a bit of a wildcard. The wave comment says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions,” so while the size is there, you’re going to need to pick your moment and know the bank well. That kind of height is not for beginners – that’s expert territory only.
The final days then settle back into moderate cross-shore lumps, with 5ft to 6ft south swell and moderate to fresh winds. Not terrible, but nothing that’ll make you race to the beach.
So, the pick of the entire 16-day window? It’s that Saturday 18th morning session, if you’re good enough to handle a 7ft south swell with onshore wind. There’s a small chance the glassy Sunday the 12th afternoon might offer a clean little wave for longboarders.
