The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim start. We’re looking at the first week or so with the ocean doing almost nothing for us. The first real hope appears on the 19th, so we’ve got a solid few days of tiny, poor-condition surf to sit through before anything changes. The jetty is exposed, but the swell is just too weak and the wind is all wrong for paddle surfing for a while.
Thursday the 16th through to Saturday the 18th are a total write-off. Tiny waves, cross-shore winds, and the water is sitting at 70°, which is about normal for this time of year. Nothing to get excited about.
Sunday the 19th is when things start to get interesting. The morning will see a bit of a lift with a 6ft SSW swell rolling in, but the wind is a cross-offshore, so it’s not clean. The afternoon is a different story. The wind swings offshore (NW) at 9 mph, cleaning up a 5ft S swell. The combined energy is moderate (233), and the period is a solid 8 seconds. This is the first real window of the outlook. The waves should be clean and rideable, a good one for the intermediates.
Monday the 20th morning will be glassy, with zero wind and a 4ft S swell. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon turns choppy again, so the morning session is the only call.
Tuesday the 21st is a mess. Strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The swell energy is dropping to 99. Not worth a paddle.
Wednesday the 22nd is another standout. The morning kicks off with a crisp offshore wind (NW) at 19 mph and a clean 6ft S swell. The energy is strong (350). The afternoon is even better: offshore winds at 12 mph, 5ft S swell, and the energy is solid (291). This is a proper session for the confident surfer. The waves will be steep and clean.
Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are back to poor conditions. The swell direction is all over the place, and the wind is onshore or cross-shore. Not worth a look.
Saturday the 25th morning is a nice surprise. A gentle cross-offshore wind (W) at 9 mph with a 4ft SE swell. The combined energy is 279, and it’s clean. A good morning if you’re keen, but the afternoon turns to chop.
Sunday the 26th morning is big. We’re looking at a 8ft SSW swell with a cross-shore wind. The combined energy is massive (1590). This is expert territory only. The swell is powerful, but the wind is a bit sideways, so it won’t be perfect. The afternoon is a mess.
From Monday the 27th onwards, the surf drops off again. There’s nothing really rideable until the end of the month, and even then, it’s small and poor. The last week offers nothing worth chasing.
The Pick: No doubt about it, Wednesday the 22nd is the day to circle. The afternoon session with the offshore wind and a solid 5ft S swell is the best on offer. The crowd at the jetty can be “sometimes” an issue, but on a Wednesday, you might have it mostly to yourself. The second best is Sunday the 19th afternoon, when the offshore wind cleans up the new swell.
Rusty.
