Alright, grab a coffee and let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Flies over the next couple of weeks.
Okay, straight up, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the next week and a half is a tough watch. There’s a real flat spell on the cards, and we’ve got a long stretch with absolutely nothing worth paddling out for. From Saturday the 11th right through to the morning of Friday the 24th, the surf is tiny, weak, and messy. The south swell is there but it’s barely a bump, hanging around the 1 to 2ft mark with a short period, and the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, chopping it right up. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We do get a few mornings where it cleans up, like Tuesday the 14th morning with a fresh offshore breeze, but the swell is a pathetic 2ft with a 4-second period – that’s virtually no energy at all (combined energy of just 15). It’s not surfable.
The real story starts to build around Monday the 20th of July. We’ve got a pulse of SSW swell coming through, pushing 6ft on the Monday morning. The period is short at 7 seconds, but the combined energy jumps right up to 520, which is significant. The wind is a moderate cross-offshore breeze, keeping things clean. This is a step up, but that 6ft with short period is going to be a bit of a wall of whitewater at this beach/jetty setup. It’s not for beginners, that’s for sure. The afternoon goes onshore and messy, so get in early.
Tuesday the 21st of July morning still has some leftover combo energy, with 4ft of S swell and a slightly better 9-second period, combined energy of 264. The wind is slight and cross-on, so it’s not perfect, but it’s the best window we’ve seen. It’s a "marginal" call, but relative to the rest of the fortnight, this is where you’d want to be.
Honestly, the standout is the Monday 20th morning. The size is there, the wind is clean, and the energy is really pumping. But you have to be aware it’s a short-period swell, so it’ll be a bit of a grinder. If you’re an intermediate or above, that’s your window. After that, it drops off again into the following weekend.
So, in short: a long, flat, frustrating run, then one decent morning on the 20th. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because after a blank run like this, things can change.
