The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. Flies is a beach-and-jetty setup, and the next week is a slow starter. The water temperature is about normal for this time of year.
Right now, through Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, the surf is flat and weak. We’re looking at swell around 2 feet from the south, with short, weak periods. The wind is cross or cross-off, but the energy is barely there (combined energy is 27 to 48). Not worth paddling out.
Saturday the 18th is a washout. The swell stays tiny, the wind picks up, and there’s some rain. The combined energy is only 28.
First real window opens Sunday the 19th morning. The swell jumps to 6 feet from the SSW, period 7 seconds, and the combined energy hits 312 (moderate). The wind is cross-off from the west, so it’ll be clean. This is a solid size for an intermediate surfer, but the short period means it might be a bit lumpy. The afternoon gets even better with a fresh offshore from the NNW, dropping to 5 feet. That’s the best of the weekend.
The standout is Monday the 20th morning. Glassy conditions with a light ESE breeze, 4 feet of south swell, and a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is 225 (moderate). This is the cleanest, most user-friendly window of the whole forecast. The swell is small enough for beginners, but the period is decent enough to hold shape. Get out there early.
After Monday, the forecast gets patchy. Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd morning look okay (Wednesday morning has 5 feet from the south, 9 seconds, clean with a north cross-off), but the afternoons get choppy. The wind turns onshore or cross, and the quality drops. The combined energy on Wednesday morning is 340 (moderate), but it’s a short-lived window.
From Thursday the 23rd through to the end of the month, it’s mostly small, weak, and messy. There are a few hopeful moments, like the afternoon of the 31st of July, where we get 5 feet from the SSE, 7 seconds, with a light cross-off and combined energy of 268 (moderate). That’s a promising sign for the end of the run, but it’s a long way off and the confidence is lower.
The best bet is Monday the 20th morning – that glassy, clean 4 feet of south swell is the pick of the bunch. The Sunday the 19th afternoon is also a solid call if you want a bit more size.
