Alright, Rusty here again, same spot, different units.
Let’s be honest – the first week and a half at Flys is a total dud. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the energy is weak – we’re talking a combined energy of just 48 to start, and it barely cracks 100 until later. The water temp is 72°, which is about 2° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a bit warmer than normal, but that’s the only good news.
From Thursday the 9th through to the 17th, it’s flat and messy. There’s a clean morning on Friday the 10th with offshore wind at 9 mph, but the swell is only 2 ft and period is 5 seconds – just nothing to work with.
The first real chance comes on Saturday the 18th. The morning brings a 6 ft SSW swell with a period of 6 seconds, and clean cross-offshore wind from the WSW at 16 mph. The combined energy hits 236 – that’s moderate energy, and it’s a real step up. The afternoon gets even bigger: 8 ft from the SSW, period 7 seconds, and the energy jumps to 662 – strong and powerful. But that’s big. At 8 ft, this is for experienced surfers only. The wind stays clean, and the swell direction matches the optimum for Flys. This is the standout of the whole 16 days – Saturday 18th afternoon is the one to circle.
Sunday the 19th backs off a bit, with 5 ft from the S, period 8 seconds, but the wind turns cross-on from the ESE. Still surfable energy at 260, but not as clean.
Monday the 20th morning gives a last chance, with 3 ft from the S, period 8 seconds, and clean cross-offshore wind from the N at 9 mph. Energy is 119 – very ordinary, but it’s there if you need a fix.
After that, the swell fades and the wind gets ugly. The second week is mostly small and blown out.
So, the only real window is Saturday 18th. The afternoon is the best – big, clean, and powerful. Experts only. The rest? Not worth it.
Rusty.
