The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. Straight up, I’ll be honest with you – it’s a mixed bag with a pretty ordinary start.
The first real chance for a surf comes on Sunday morning, the 19th of July. We’ve got a 3ft southerly swell sneaking in, but it’s short period at 6 seconds, so it won’t have much grunt. The wind is a moderate offshore from the NNW, meaning the waves will be clean enough, but the overall energy is weak (85). It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about.
Monday morning, the 20th, is a real highlight early on. The wind goes glassy, and the swell drops a touch to 3ft from the south, period stretching to 8 seconds. The water temp is 71°, about average for this time of year. It’s a small, clean morning – perfect for a longboard or a funboard. The wave energy is still low (78), but the lack of wind makes it a joy. This is a standout for the early part of the week.
The rest of the week gets messy. Wednesday the 22nd sees a big jump in swell height, hitting 7ft from the south, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 533 – moderate energy – but the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the SW, and there’s a risk of thunderstorms. It’s lumpy, choppy, and not great for a paddle. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The size is also getting too big for beginners.
Thursday morning the 23rd is a bit of a tease. Swell is 6ft from the south with a 9-second period, giving solid energy (601). The wind is offshore from the NNW, so the waves will be clean. But the quality is marginal – it’s a beach/jetty break, so that long period (9 seconds) can make it a bit straight and tricky. It’s only for the experienced crew.
After that, the surf drops right off. From Friday the 24th through to the end of the month, we’re looking at small, weak swell, mostly below 3ft, with periods of 6-8 seconds. The wind is often onshore or cross-shore, so conditions are choppy and poor. There’s a long gap with no real recommendations.
The next flicker of hope comes on Wednesday, the 29th of July. Swell picks up to 5ft from the SSW, period 7 seconds, with light cross-shore wind. The energy is moderate (260), but the quality is still marginal. It’s a bit of a gamble.
All in all, the best of the bunch is Monday morning, the 20th of July. It’s small, glassy, and clean – a true standout for a relaxed session. Thursday morning the 23rd has the size and clean wind, but it’s only for the experts. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don’t hold your breath for the second week.
