The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s suss out what’s on the cards for Flies over this sixteen-day stretch.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you: it’s a slow start and a long wait for anything decent. The first solid window we’ve got to talk about is Wednesday the 15th of July, but even then it’s only a marginal call. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the SW with a short, weak 6-second period, and the energy is moderate (299). The cross-off wind from the W at 12 mph will keep things reasonably clean, but with that short period, don’t expect any punch. That same day sees the swell dropping to 4ft in the afternoon, still clean but poor. Honestly, the first couple weeks are a tough go – mostly poor surf conditions with very low energy levels. From Monday the 13th through the 25th, there are only one or two sessions that even get a "surfable" nod. There’s a long gap of nothing good.
Then things finally wake up on Sunday the 26th of July. This is the standout. The morning session brings a solid 7ft swell from the SSW, with a 7-second period. Now, the wave energy is strong (657), so those waves have some weight to them. That’s getting into the "experts only" territory for size at 7ft. The wind is light from the NNE at 6 mph, giving us clean conditions. This is your best bet to get a few proper ones. The swell direction is SW, and that’s the optimum for Flies here at the beach/jetty. Heads-up, though: crowds are sometimes an issue here, so expect company.
Before that, Monday the 20th of July morning has a clean glassy session with 5ft from the ENE and wave energy of 253 (moderate). Winds are glassy from the SSE at 3 mph. It’s a reasonable shot for intermediates, but the energy is a step below the 26th.
For the Saturday the 25th of July morning, you get a glassy dawn with 4ft from the S and 101 energy – it’s surfable but only ordinary. And on Sunday the 19th of July afternoon, there’s very ordinary conditions with 4ft swell.
So, the real takeaway here is to circle Sunday the 26th of July. That’s the highlight of the whole run. There is a chance the swell might be a bit straight for the beach break, but with the clean wind, it’ll be worth the paddle. For the rest of the period, it’s mostly waiting for the next decent swell to show.
Stay patient, and remember, forecasts can shift.
Rusty.
