Table - best surf conditions forecast for Flies over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough stretch for the Flies area. We’re looking at the next 16 days and honestly, there’s a big fat gap at the start with no real surf to speak of. The wave energy is just too weak and the wind is all over the shop.
The first chance at anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Wednesday, July 15th. Even then, it’s not a classic. Wednesday morning brings a 5ft swell from the southwest, but the period is a short, weak 6 seconds. The combined energy (278) is moderate, but the wind is a gentle cross-offshore breeze, which will keep the surface clean. It’s a beginner-friendly size, but don’t expect much push.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is on Monday, July 20th. The morning session has a 4ft south swell with a slightly better 8-second period and a combined energy of 235. What makes it the pick of the litter is the light offshore from the north, promising clean, glassy conditions. The water temp is about 70°, basically average for this time of year. Still, it’s only a 4ft swell, so it’s not going to be a world-beater. The afternoon that day gets messy with a cross-onshore wind.
After that, the rest of the window is a washout. There are long gaps of days with nothing on offer – the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, the swell drops right off, and the energy is weak (often under 100). Tuesday July 22nd and Wednesday July 23rd are particularly grim. Even the glassy conditions on Saturday July 18th come with a tiny 1ft swell, so there’s nothing to ride.
Given the mostly poor quality and the fact the swell is weak and the wind is often cross or onshore for a beach/jetty setup, this stretch might actually be more interesting for the kite crowd than us paddle surfers. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, it’s a lot of waiting.
Rusty.
