The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let me tell you, looking at the next couple of weeks, it's not shaping up to be a classic run for Flies (beach/jetty). We're looking at a lot of ordinary conditions and plenty of blown-out days, so don't get too amped just yet. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, though, if you can be patient.
We start off this Friday the 17th with just 2ft of weak, short-period S swell and a cross-breeze making a mess of things. That pretty much sets the tone for the next few days. Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th are nothing to write home about.
There is a spike of energy coming in on Sunday morning the 19th, with a 4ft SSW swell and fresh offshore NW winds, which sounds promising, but the raw surf quality is still listed as poor. It feels like a tease. The swell period is a short 7 seconds, so it won't have much grunt. Monday morning the 20th is glassy but tiny at 3ft.
We then hit a real lull from Monday afternoon right through until Tuesday the 22nd. Tuesday the 22nd sees a big jump in size – 8ft on Wednesday morning and 8ft on Wednesday afternoon – with a massive jump in wave energy (828 and 1911). The problem is the wind is cross or cross-onshore and there's a risk of thunderstorms, so the surface will be a mess. That size with a short 9-second period and onshore wind is going to be a washing machine. Honestly, that Wednesday looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The only real window of hope falls on Thursday the 23rd. Thursday morning, we've got a clean 4ft S swell, 8-second period (moderate), with gentle offshore NW winds at 9 mph. The combined energy is moderate (240), and the forecast calls for good surf conditions. It's not pumping, but after all that junk, a clean offshore day with some waist-high waves is your best bet. This is the standout. It'll be small, but clean and rideable. Thursday afternoon stays clean but drops off.
From there, we go into another long stretch of tiny, blown-out, or onshore slop from the 24th of July right through to the 1st of August. We get a little spike in size on Tuesday the 28th of July with a 7ft SW swell, but it's onshore wind, short period, and labelled marginal. There's a brief glassy moment on Friday the 31st of July with 3ft S swell, but again, the conditions are described as ordinary, not good.
So, to wrap it up: the next couple of weeks are mostly a write-off. Don't waste your time on the big, messy days around the 22nd. Circle Thursday the 23rd on your calendar. That's the one. Get out there for a clean, small session.
Rusty.
