The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin' for Flies.

Honestly, mate, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day stretch is a tough one. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands. The first swell that’s even worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Sunday the 19th, and even then, it’s far from perfect. Before that, Friday and Saturday are a write-off with tiny, junky, cross-shore slop. You’re better off staying on the sand.

Sunday the 19th is the first day we can actually talk about. The morning brings a fresh offshore breeze from the NW, which will clean things up nicely. The swell is a small 4 ft from the SSW, with a short period of 7 seconds, so it’s not going to have much punch. The combined energy is only moderate (146). It’s surfable, but “ordinary” is the word. The afternoon the wind drops to a gentle offshore, and the swell holds at 4 ft from the S. It’s clean, but still very average. This is the best we’ve got for the first week.

After that, we hit another wall. Monday the 20th through to Saturday the 26th is a sad run of small, weak, and mostly onshore or cross-shore junk. The swell barely gets above 3 ft, and the wind is usually a problem. Kite surfers might get a look in on Wednesday the 22nd when the wind is fresh from the SW and the swell jumps to 6 ft (S, 9s), but that combined energy hits 505 – strong for sure, but the conditions are still “poor” for a paddle surfer. The break is a beach/jetty setup, so it’s just going to be a lumpy, messy zone.

Thursday the 23rd is worth a mention. The morning sees a glassy, clean 3 ft from the S (8s) with a light offshore cross-off wind. The combined energy is moderate (184). The report calls it “surfable but very ordinary,” and I’d agree. It’s the cleanest the waves will be for a while, but don’t expect any gems.

The second week stays pretty bleak. Sunday the 26th morning is clean but tiny (3 ft). Monday the 27th morning sees a similar story: 3 ft from the S (8s), clean with a light offshore, but the energy is only moderate (191). It’s a nice-looking morning but the waves are just too small to get excited about.

The real highlight, if you can call it that, is Thursday the 30th. The afternoon turns glassy with a light wind from the W. The swell drops to 2 ft, but the period stretches to 9 seconds from the SE. The combined energy is weak (65), but it’s glassy. This is the kind of session you’d take a log out for and just enjoy the glide. It’s not a standout for power, but for a clean, cruisy afternoon on a tiny wave, it’s the best the whole forecast has to offer.

The rest of the run into the start of August is more of the same – small, weak, and mostly cross-shore conditions. The water temperature is sitting at 73°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit.

At the end of the day, there’s no real standout here. If you’re desperate, the cleanest windows are Sunday the 19th morning, Thursday the 23rd morning, and that glassy Thursday the 30th afternoon. Don’t expect to get your arms pulled out.

Rusty.
