Alright, let’s take a proper look at what’s coming up for Flies. It’s a beach and jetty setup, exposed to a SW swell, so it catches a bit of what’s around, but honestly – the next couple of weeks are looking tough. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands for most of this run. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is about 1° above average for this time of year – nothing major, just your typical July warmth.
From now, right through until the morning of Thursday the 10th of July, it’s just one poor surf condition after another. Wind is all over the place, mostly cross or onshore, and the swell is tiny – we’re talking 1 ft to 5 ft at best, but with short, weak periods around 4 to 7 seconds. The combined wave energy is mostly pitiful, with values like 9, 26, 31 – barely a ripple. The morning of Monday the 6th sees a spike to 5 ft from the ESE, with energy hitting 141 (moderate), but it’s blown out by a 19 mph onshore wind and heavy rain. Honestly, that’s more of a kitesurfing setup than a paddle session. There’s no joy in the water until Friday morning the 10th.
That Friday morning – Thursday night will feel like a long wait – things finally turn. We’ve got clear skies, a light offshore from the NW at 9 mph, and a 3 ft S swell rolling in at a 6-second period. The energy is 86, so it’s still on the weaker side of moderate, but those clean offshore conditions mean you’ll find a few fun, shapeable little runners along the jetty. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but with that wind, it’s the best we’re going to get. This is the standout of the whole outlook – not huge, but clean, and that counts for everything right now. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so you might have a few others with the same idea.
After that, we go straight back into poor conditions for days. Friday afternoon the 10th goes to a cross-shore SW wind at 9 mph, and the swell drops again. Saturday the 11th through to Tuesday the 15th is a write-off – strong SE winds, onshore, small swell, low energy. Tuesday afternoon the 14th sees a brutal 28 mph WSW cross-off wind, but the swell is only 1 ft – just nasty.
A flicker of hope shows up on Saturday the 18th of July, 8 days away. The afternoon brings a WNW cross-off at 9 mph and a 5 ft SSW swell with a 7-second period, pushing 178 energy – that’s a decent moderate pulse. The wave comment again says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but with the cross-off wind cleaning it up, this could be another session worth slotting in.
Sunday the 19th of July starts with a glassy calm – NE wind at 3 mph – and a 4 ft S swell at 7 seconds, energy 131. That’s clean, small, and very surfable if you’re not chasing big juice. It’s not a standout because the swell’s just average, but glassy conditions at Flies are rare enough to notice. The afternoon goes cross-shore SSW at 9 mph, and it’s back to poor.
So to wrap it up: the first real surf is Friday morning the 10th of July – that’s your best bet, clean and small. Then there’s a long gap of poor conditions until the afternoon of Saturday the 18th and that glassy Sunday morning the 19th. Nothing huge, nothing perfect, but a few windows if you’re keen and patient. Most days you’d be better off staying on the beach.
