The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Flies over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a real slow burner. The first week and a half is pretty grim, then there’s a couple of flashes that could be worth the wait.
We’re kicking off with nothing decent. From Tuesday the 14th right through to Saturday the 19th morning, it’s just poor. Small, weak swell, a lot of onshore or messy cross-off wind, and energy readings are mostly pathetic – barely cracking 50 or so when we’re lucky, and often way less than that. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing weird there. Honestly, for most of that first week, you’re better off finding something else to do. The surf just isn’t there.
Then comes Sunday the 19th. The morning still looks rough with a fresh cross-off breeze and 5ft of SSW swell, but the afternoon is where it finally wakes up. We see 7ft of SSW groundswell (period 7 seconds, so short period windswell) with a solid combined energy of 401 – that's proper moderate-to-strong power. Wind goes offshore from the WNW, so it should be clean. Looks like the best session of the whole run. Monday the 20th keeps it going with 5ft of S swell and a long period of 9 seconds, energy at 310, and a gentle offshore from the NNW in the morning. That’ll be clean with some shape. These two days are the standouts. It’s an exposed beach/jetty setup, so expect some crowds as it’s a spot that’s known to get busy sometimes. Swell direction is pretty much right on that optimum SW.
After that, things fall apart again. The rest of the week (21st through the 24th) drops back to small, weak, often onshore slop. Then we get a little bump on Saturday the 25th: 5ft of SSE swell in the morning with a light cross-off breeze, clean, and energy at 240. Afternoon gets a bit bigger but turns cross-shore and messy. That’s a possible, but not as clean as the Sunday-Monday window.
The second week sees a bigger, longer-period S swell pushing in around the 28th and 29th July, but the wind is brutal – strong cross-on and onshore, gusting 28 mph on Wednesday morning. The energy values are high (389, 329) but with that wind it’s just a mess. For experts only if anyone’s desperate, but honestly, it looks more like a kiteboarding day than a surf day.
So, bottom line: sit tight through the first week. Sunday the 19th afternoon and Monday the 20th morning are your best shots. Clean, solid, and with some decent energy. After that, forecasts can change, but as it sits right now, it’s a two-session window and then back to waiting.
Rusty.
