Table - best surf conditions forecast for Flies over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are a tough watch for the Flies (beach/jetty). This spot is exposed to the SW, and while we’ve got a bit of consistency on offer, the conditions are just not cooperating. It’s a real shame, because the swell window is open, but the wind and wave quality are fighting us every step of the way.
The forecast kicks off on Friday the 10th of July with a tiny 2ft S swell and a 5-second period – that’s weak, short-period slop with a combined energy of just 43. The wind is offshore from the NW in the morning, so it’s clean, but the surf is just too poor to get excited about. Friday afternoon turns cross-offshore from the WSW, still clean but even smaller at 2ft. Saturday the 11th is a write-off with a messy cross-shore wind from the ENE and a cross-chop, making the 2ft S swell feel even worse. Sunday the 12th is light cross-shore winds but the swell drops to 2ft – not worth paddling out.
Monday the 13th is dead flat with a 1.0ft SE swell and a 10-second period, but it’s onshore and weak. Tuesday the 14th sees a bit more size – 3ft SW swell in the morning with clean cross-offshore winds from the WSW – but it’s still poor surf, with a combined energy of only 31. Tuesday afternoon jumps to 4ft, but the wind switches to a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy. The pattern keeps repeating: clean windows get wrecked by the wind, like Wednesday the 15th morning with a clean 4ft SW swell, but it fades into lumpy cross-shore chop by the afternoon.
Now, hold on – there’s a glimmer. Thursday the 16th of July morning gives us glassy conditions with a 3ft SSW swell and a 6-second period. The combined energy hits 80, and it’s described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s the best we’ve got in the first week, but it’s still not a standout. Friday the 17th morning is also glassy with the same 3ft swell, but it’s fleeting – the afternoon brings onshore winds and it’s gone.
The second week gets ugly. Saturday the 18th brings a bigger 5ft SSW swell with a combined energy of 186, but it’s onshore and considered poor. Sunday the 19th is a washout with 5ft S swell, 8-second period, and a fresh cross-onshore wind from the E. The combined energy jumps to 312, but it’s lumpy and messy. Monday the 20th has a strong cross-shore wind from the NE at 25 mph, with a 4ft S swell – it’s more of a kite session than a paddle session. Tuesday the 21st is the biggest swell of the period: 8ft S swell with an 8-second period and a combined energy of 902 – that’s strong wave energy. But the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, and with that size, it’s only for experts, and the conditions are poor. From Wednesday the 22nd through to Saturday the 25th, the swell slowly drops from 6ft to 2ft, but the wind is consistently cross-onshore or cross-shore, keeping the surf poor.
Honestly, there’s no true standout here. The best windows are the glassy mornings on the 16th and 17th of July, but the swell is small and the period is short. If you’re desperate, go for a dawn session on those days, but keep expectations low. The rest of the 16 days is a solid gap of poor surf.
Rusty.
