Table - best surf conditions forecast for Jetty over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at the Jetty.
Honestly, the next two weeks look pretty grim. We’ve got a big, long stretch of poor conditions on the cards. The first solid recommendation doesn’t show up until the morning of Wednesday, the 8th of July, and even then it’s a real struggle. You’re looking at a full week-plus of just trying to find a window.
We start with a small bit of hope on Wednesday morning. The wind is a light cross-off from the north-northeast, so it’ll be clean. Swell is a tiny 2 ft from the east with a short period of 7 seconds. Combined wave energy is weak, just 60. It’s surfable for a keen log or a foiler, but the quality is ordinary.
That window slams shut by the afternoon when the wind swings southwest and picks up, making a mess of things. Then we’re stuck in a rut. From Thursday through the following Monday, every session is scored poorly. Winds are all over the shop – onshore, cross-onshore, or lumpy cross-shore breezes up to 19 mph. The swell stays small, mostly under 3 ft for that entire first week, with a period that never gets above 8 seconds. The wave energy flirts with moderate numbers on a couple of days (a max of 129 on Tuesday the 14th), but the wind just ruins any chance of a decent wave.
The water temperature is a balmy 74° when we get our first taste, and the anomaly is 5°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. A real treat if you could only get a clean one.
There’s a glimmer on Thursday morning, the 16th of July. A moderate offshore wind from the north at 12 mph cleans up a tiny 2 ft east-southeast swell. It’s a morning for the small-wave gear, but it’s clean.
Then we hit another rough patch. The weekend of the 18th and 19th is blown out with southwest winds, 16 to 22 mph, and lumpy conditions. The swell tries to build on Sunday the 19th, with a 3 ft south swell and moderate energy of 156, but that fresh cross-onshore wind just tears it up. For paddle surfing, it’s a no-go. The setup here is a breakwater, exposed to the wind, and with that kind of chop, it’d be more interesting for a kite session than a surf.
The most promising window might be the very last couple of days. On the morning of Wednesday, the 22nd of July, the swell bumps up to 5 ft from the south with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a strong 187. But the wind is onshore from the south-southeast at only 3 mph, which is a light breeze. It’s still flagged as poor, but that’s the biggest, most powerful swell of the whole run. Then by the morning of Thursday, the 23rd of July, the wind turns to a nice cross-off from the north-northeast at 9 mph. The swell drops back to 3 ft from the south-southeast, but it’s clean with moderate wave energy (103). That Thursday morning is your best bet for a clean, surfable wave in the second week, but you’ll be on a shortboard or a fish for that 3 ft.
Overall, the Jetty is a very consistent break, so it hasn’t given up, but the wind just won’t cooperate. The forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but as it stands, there’s no standout day. The clean, cross-off mornings are your only play.
Rusty.
