The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's on the cards for the Jetty.
Honestly, the next 16 days are a bit of a write-off for the Jetty. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and messy surf ahead. The water is sitting at 76°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like bathwater.
The only real glimmer in the whole forecast lands on the afternoon of Monday the 17th. That afternoon, we get a clean-up with the wind swinging offshore from the NNW at 6 mph. The swell is a modest 5 ft out of the SSE, but with a short period of just 7 seconds, so it’s not going to have much punch. The combined energy is moderate (272). It’s small, but with glassy conditions, it’ll be the best we see. The Jetty can get a few people on it, but it’s worth a look.
After that brief window, it’s a downhill slide. The rest of the first week and into the second is plagued by onshore and cross-shore winds, tiny swell, and choppy conditions. We’re looking at waves under 3 ft and weak energy readings in the double digits – definitely not worth paddling out for.
The second week holds a bit more size, but it comes with a catch. By the 28th of August, the swell picks up to 4 ft to 4 ft from the SE with a long period of 12 to 14 seconds, and the energy readings jump into the strong range (502 to 614). That sounds promising, but it’s a long-period groundswell hitting a beach break, which tends to close out. Plus, it's accompanied by a fresh, cross-shore wind from the ENE at 16 to 19 mph, making it lumpy and messy. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, unless you're an expert looking for a challenge.
The 29th of August morning sees the wind go cross-off from the NNE, cleaning it up, but the swell drops back to 3 ft with only moderate energy (139). The 30th and 31st are back to onshore junk.
Bottom line: your best bet is the Monday afternoon of the 17th for a few clean, but small, waves. The rest of the forecast is a waiting game. It’s a long blank run, but it happens around here.
Rusty.
