Alright, let’s get to it.
Look, I’ll be straight with you—this stretch is a tough one. We’ve got a 16-day forecast window, but the first solid recommendation for a surf doesn’t really show until Saturday the 12th of July. Before that, it’s a whole lot of nothing worth paddling out for. The first week is filled with tiny, weak swell and poor conditions, so you’re better off doing something else.
We’re looking at Avalon 15th Street. It’s a beginner-friendly sand-bottom break that’s fairly exposed to the southeast. Water temps are running about average for this time of year, so no need for a thick wetsuit.
The standout window kicks off on Saturday the 12th of July, morning. We’ve got a small 3ft swell coming out of the east, but here’s the kicker—the wind is blowing offshore from the WNW at 15 mph. That’s going to groom the surface and give you clean, peeling little lines. Combined wave energy is weak at 39, so don’t expect any power, but for a beginner, this is about as good as it gets. Watch the period, though—it’s only 4 seconds, so those waves will be short, fat, and a little bit tricky to ride. Still, the offshore wind makes it the best call of the whole run.
Sunday the 13th of July morning is also worth a mention. Another small 2ft easterly swell, with a gentle offshore from the NW at 9 mph. Clean again, with combined energy even lower at 35. Not a standout, but consistent enough to have a fun, low-stakes session.
The rest of the days—Monday the 14th through to the end of the period—are mostly tiny or messy, with a lot of cross-shore or onshore wind. You might get the odd clean window, but nothing that’s going to get you out of bed early.
So here’s the bottom line: if you’re a beginner wanting to practise in clean, tiny surf, Saturday the 12th of July morning is your best shot. If you want anything more than that, you’re out of luck for this whole 16-day stretch.
