The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's be straight with you – right now, there isn't a single set of waves worth paddling out for at Avalon 15th Street. The whole 16-day outlook is a flat spell with poor surf conditions forecast for every single session. We're looking at a real gap here with nothing to recommend.
The water temperature is sitting at 77°, which is a touch warmer than what's normal for this time of year, so you'd be warm if there was anything to ride.
Honestly, the whole stretch from August 18th all the way through to September 2nd is a write-off for surfing. The swell heights barely climb above 3 ft, and most of the time they're under 2 ft. The combined swell energy is generally weak – you'll see values like 28, 35, even as low as 8 at times, which is barely a ripple (28). Later on, around August 28th, you do get a jump to 127 (moderate wave energy) with a 3 ft SSE swell, but it's locked in with a risk of thunderstorms and a moderate cross-onshore wind creating chop. That's no good for a clean ride.
The wind tries to play nice a few times. The morning of August 24th has light cross-offshore NW wind at 12 mph, and the morning of August 25th brings a clean offshore from the WNW at 6 mph, but there's just no swell to work with. The period on those small clean days is mostly short, like 6 to 12 seconds, but on a 1 ft to 2 ft wave, it's not going to do anything.
The best of a very flat bunch might be the morning of August 30th, with a light offshore WNW wind at 9 mph, clean conditions, and a 2 ft SE swell. It's still tiny. For an absolute beginner, that glassy feel might be a chance to sit on a foamie and feel the ocean, but there's no power there. There are no standout sessions in this window.
For a spot that's fairly consistent, this blank run is unusual. Forecasts can always change, so keep an eye on it, but for the next two weeks, save your energy. It looks more like a stretch for a beach stroll than a surf.
Rusty.
