The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next 16 days at Avalon 15th Street are looking pretty flat. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, disappointing surf ahead, with nothing really worth paddling out for.
The water is running about 78°F – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, so if you’re just keen for a float, it’s pleasant. But the waves? Not much to get excited about.
From Saturday the 22nd right through to Tuesday the 1st of September, we’re stuck with small, weak junk. Swell heights barely creep above 2 ft, and when they do, it’s short-period windswell between 5 and 6 seconds. The combined energy is weak, mostly in the teens to low 20s. The wind is a mess too – onshore from the ESE or SE most of the time, chopping things up. The best we get is a bit of cross-offshore breeze on Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, but even then, the swell is tiny and weak. There’s a little bump on the morning of Sunday the 30th with a 3 ft NE swell, but it’s short period (5 seconds) and onshore wind – just not worth it.
The only time the ocean shows any real sign of life is around Tuesday the 1st of September. The afternoon sees a 4 ft swell from the ESE with a long 14-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 608 – that’s moderate energy. But the wind is onshore from the S, making it choppy and messy. Wednesday the 2nd has a similar 4 ft, 12-second swell from the SE, with cross-shore wind, but the energy is high (458). Still, the surf quality is called marginal at best due to wind and tide. For a beginner-friendly break, 4 ft is okay, but with that onshore wind, it’s not going to be clean. The longer period means the sets will be more powerful and spaced out, but the onshore wind will ruin the shape.
For a short window on Thursday the 3rd of September, the wind goes glassy in the morning and calm in the afternoon. The swell, however, is only 1 ft from the SE with a 10-second period – it’s clean, but tiny. You’d be scratching for something to ride.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. The waves are small, the wind is rarely in our favour, and the surf quality is poor for the entire forecast. If you’re desperate, keep an eye on the morning of the 3rd of September for a glassy but tiny wave. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for something better.
Rusty.
