The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk surf. Avalon 15th Street is looking pretty flat and quiet across the entire 16-day window. I’ll be honest—there’s nothing here that’s going to get you excited. The first surf recommendation doesn’t show up until Wednesday afternoon, August 19th, and even then it’s tiny.
The water temp is 25°C, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
Starting on Wednesday afternoon, August 19th, we’ve got a tiny 1ft SE swell, period around 9 seconds, with a cross-off wind from the west at 15 km/h. The combined energy is weak (23), and the surf conditions are poor. Not much to write home about.
Thursday morning, August 20th, the swell drops to 0.7ft from the ESE, period 8 seconds, but the wind goes glassy—dead calm. That’s a nice window for a paddle if you’ve got a longboard, but the wave size is practically nothing. Energy is a measly 9.
From there, it’s a long stretch of poor conditions. Friday through Sunday, August 21st to 23rd, we see small swells in the 1ft to 3ft range, with periods mostly under 6 seconds—short, weak, and messy. Winds are cross or cross-on, with some moderate breezes. The energy stays in the teens to low 40s. Nothing worth chasing.
Monday, August 24th, shows a little promise with a 1.0ft SE swell at 12 seconds, clean offshore NW wind at 10 km/h in the morning. The period is longer, which means better shaped waves, but the size is still tiny. Combined energy is 32—still weak.
Then we hit another dry spell. Tuesday, August 25th, through to Sunday, September 1st, the swell stays small, mostly under 3ft, with periods ranging from 4 to 13 seconds. Winds are often cross-on or cross, with moderate to fresh breezes. The combined energy climbs a bit late in the run—on Tuesday afternoon, September 1st, we see 201 (moderate energy) and by Wednesday morning, September 2nd, it’s 243—but the swell is only 2ft from the ESE at 11 seconds, and the wind is cross-on. The surf is still described as poor.
The strongest wave energy in the whole period shows up on Saturday, August 29th, and Sunday, August 30th, with combined energy readings of 100 to 143, and swell heights hitting 4ft from the ENE at 5–6 seconds. But the wind is fresh cross-onshore, making it choppy and lumpy. Not a good look for clean waves.
So, what’s the standout? Honestly, there isn’t one. The best you could hope for is Thursday morning, August 20th, with glassy conditions and a tiny 0.7ft ESE swell. If you’ve got a longboard and just want to float around, that’s the pick. Otherwise, the whole run is a dud.
This is Avalon 15th Street, a beginner-friendly beach break that’s fairly consistent, but the forecast has nothing good on offer. It’s a blank run, and that’s just how it goes sometimes.
