The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this straight. I’ve looked over the numbers for Avalon 15th Street, and honestly, for the next two weeks, it’s a tough watch. This stretch is basically a write-off for anyone chasing real waves. The first solid recommendation doesn’t pop up until Saturday, July 25th, and even then, it’s a one-morning window before it all goes flat and messy again.
We start off dead flat. From Thursday, July 16th right through to Friday, July 24th, the surf is tiny and weak. We’re talking ankle-snappers at best, with swell heights barely scraping 1 ft. The energy is pitiful, reading between 7 and 137 on the combined scale, meaning it’s mostly weak junk. Winds are a real problem too—cross-shore, onshore, and just generally messy. There’s a brief moment on Sunday, July 19th afternoon, where the wind goes clean offshore from the NNW, but with only 2 ft of swell, it’s about as exciting as watching paint dry. That period is a solid 7 seconds, so it’s not exactly grunty either.
Now, the one bright spot. Saturday, July 25th, early. The morning looks promising. We get a 4 ft SE swell rolling in, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to a solid 226 (moderate). The water is running a touch warmer than normal at 76°, which is about two and a half degrees above average—nothing crazy, just a nice little bonus. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the WSW, keeping things clean. This is the only window that’s even surfable, but it’s still marked as “very ordinary conditions” and the score is low. For a beginner-friendly spot like this, it’s the best you’re going to get. The crowds are sometimes an issue here, so if you’re keen, get out early.
But don’t get too excited. By Saturday afternoon, the wind swings back onshore, the swell jumps to 6 ft and gets chopped up, and it’s game over. After that, Sunday July 26th through to the end of July, we’re back to tiny, weak, wind-affected dribble. The energy drops to 49 or 66, and the swell direction is all over the shop. Nothing worth paddling out for.
So, bottom line: if you absolutely need to get wet, Saturday July 25th morning is your only real shot. Otherwise, save your energy. The forecast might change, but for now, it’s a long, flat, frustrating stretch.
