The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s get real about the surf for the next couple of weeks.
Frankly, it’s a tough stretch. For the longest time, there’s pretty much nothing on the cards that gets the heart racing. We’re looking at a solid gap of flat, weak, or just plain messy conditions. The first hint of any real energy doesn’t show up until the end of the month, and even then, it’s not a home run.
The only spot we’ve got on the map is Avalon 15th Street. It’s a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent break, but the whole 16-day window is a struggle. The water’s sitting at 77°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing your tail off while you’re waiting for a wave.
The first real pulse of swell that has any sort of “oomph” arrives on Sunday, 30th August. The morning sees a solid SE swell around 3ft, with a period of 12 seconds. That’s a decent groundswell. The combined energy of it all is strong, hitting 232. The problem? The wind is blowing from the ENE, putting it cross-shore, which is going to mess with the shape. It’s a moderate cross-chop, so it’s not going to be glassy. The afternoon drops off a bit to 3ft from the ESE, but still, the wind stays cross-shore.
That Sunday morning could be the best of a bad bunch, but it’s not a standout. The swell is there, but the wind isn’t doing us any favors. For a beginner spot, this is still manageable, but for anyone looking for a proper wave, it’s just average. The rest of the window is littered with tiny, short-period, or onshore junk. Tuesday the 18th through to Saturday the 29th is basically a write-off with surf under 2ft and poor conditions.
So, to call it: The best of the lot is that Sunday, 30th August morning. Swell from the SE, about 3ft, with a 12-second period. It’s not epic, but it’s the only thing that gets close. The ENE wind at 12 mph is a buzzkill, though. You might get a couple of fun ones if you’re patient, but don’t expect a classic.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the charts. Things can change.
Rusty.
