The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got to be straight with you. Looking at the 16-day window for Avalon 15th Street, the honest truth is there’s not a single standout session in the whole run. The swell is tiny, the energy is weak, and the conditions never really line up for a proper surf. It’s one of those stretches where you’d be better off finding another hobby for a few weeks.
The whole period is a flat spell. The first glimmer of any surf is on Friday the 21st of August, but it’s barely a ripple. We’re looking at a 0.7ft swell from the ESE with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a measly 14. That’s not surf, that’s a lake. The water temp is 78°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s not going to help you paddle.
Saturday the 22nd is more of the same: 2ft to 2ft of weak, short-period wind swell from the E, with light rain and cross-onshore winds making it choppy and messy. The energy is still pathetic, at 36 to 59. Not worth a second look.
Sunday the 23rd has a clean morning with a cross-offshore wind, but the swell drops to 1ft and then 0.3ft in the afternoon. Just a tease.
Monday the 24th brings a glassy morning with a 0.7ft swell from the ESE, but the period is 12 seconds, which is long-period groundswell for such a tiny wave. It’ll be clean, but you’ll be bobbing around waiting for a wave that never comes. The energy is 22.
The rest of the week and into the start of September is a broken record. The biggest swell we see is 2ft on the 4th of September, which is a 4-second wind swell from the S – that’s just chopped-up whitewater. The best wind we get is glassy conditions on the 5th of September, but the swell is still only 2ft with a 4-second period.
There is a moment on Tuesday the 25th of August where the morning has a clean offshore wind from the NW at 12 mph, with a 1.0ft SE swell and an 11-second period. The energy is 21. It’s clean, but there’s no power. It’s a long wait for a knee-high wave.
Forget about any standout. There are no days with bigger swell, good wind, and decent energy combined. The whole 16-day run is a gap. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the glassy mornings on the 24th, 26th, or 5th of September might be the least offensive, but you’ll be on a tiny foam board playing in ankle-biters. The break is a beginner-friendly beach, but there’s nothing for anyone to ride here, even a beginner.
The setup is a beach break, so with the tiny, weak swell and the occasional cross-onshore wind, it’d be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, but even then, there’s no wind to speak of most days.
This is just a dead run for the Jersey Shore. The forecasts can change, but right now, leave the boards at home. Rusty.
