The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the Wildwood area. I gotta be straight with you – the next couple weeks are lookin’ pretty flat and grim for paddle surfing.
We start on Wednesday the 19th of August, and there’s just nothin’ on offer. We go through a long stretch, all the way to the end of August, with no real surf to speak of. The waves stay tiny, usually under 1.5ft, with short periods and weak energy. The swell energy is barely there, often in the low teens or twenties (combined energy of all swells directed here values like 12, 23, 35). It’s a proper flat spell, with only a few days of light, glassy mornings that would be better for a kayak than a surfboard.
Into the first week of September, things stay quiet. It’s not until Wednesday morning, September 2nd, that we finally see a pulse. Now, this is the only thing that looks even remotely surfable. Wildwood Crest picks up some small swell from the S, coming in at about 2.5ft. The period is short, only 5 seconds, so expect weak, crumbly waves. But the wind is light and offshore from the WSW, so it’ll be clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year. The combined energy of all swells directed here is only 62, so it’s weak. It’s a bare-minimum day for a longboard, and the crowds are *often* an issue here, so expect company. After that, it falls back apart again by Thursday morning, September 3rd, with onshore winds messin’ things up.
So, the only stand-out, if you can call it that, is that Wednesday morning, September 2nd, at Wildwood Crest. It’s a short window of clean, but tiny, surf. The rest of the 16-day run is a write-off.
