The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at our local setup for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s a pretty flat and quiet run for a while. The first real chance of anything decent doesn’t show up until Monday the 31st of August, so we’re looking at nearly two weeks of small, mostly poor, or unsurfable conditions before that. If you’re itching for a paddle, you’ll have to be patient.
The early part of the window is a write-off. From Tuesday the 18th right through to Friday the 28th, the waves are tiny – mostly under 2 ft – with very weak combined energy readings (21 to 167). The winds are a mess, often onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell periods are short and choppy. There’s a few mornings with glassy conditions, but the swell is just too small to do anything with. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd have a hint of surfable waves, but the conditions are ordinary, and the swell is still weak and short-period. It’s a frustrating stretch.
Now, the standout. The best bet on offer is the morning of Monday the 31st of August at Wildwood Crest (sandbar). The morning looks clean with a light breeze and a cross-offshore wind, which is a huge plus. Swell will be coming from the East at 5 ft with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy climbs to a moderate 242, so there’s some proper push behind it. The direction is a good match for the break’s optimum (SE). This is a solid, surfable wave for the morning, but the afternoon goes to crap as the wind swings onshore and picks up. Also, the water temperature is about average for the time of year, so nothing wild there.
For a slightly smaller but still possible option, the morning of Friday the 28th of August has a clean, moderate offshore wind from the WNW. The swell is a smaller 3 ft from the SSE (105 energy), but it’s a far cry from the Monday stand-out. It’s a “surfable” window, but nothing special.
So, to sum it up: the wait is long, but the morning of Monday the 31st is the one to circle on the calendar. Get out there early before the wind ruins it.
Rusty.
