The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Royal Palms State Beach is serving up over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough outlook. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for any decent surf. There’s not a single day where this sheltered reef and point break gets a clean wave with the right wind. The swell is there, but it’s tiny and all wrong.
Right from the start on the 16th of August, we’ve got a tiny 2ft groundswell from the SW with a long 15-second period, but a cross-onshore wind rips it to pieces. The wave energy is moderate at best (237), but it’s all chop. That water temp is sitting at 71°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – very unusual, feels like bathwater.
This pattern just repeats itself. Every single morning and afternoon through the end of August is the same story: small swell, anywhere from 1.0ft to 2ft, mostly from the SSW or SW, with a consistent 13 to 19-second period. The problem is the wind. It’s almost always a cross-onshore breeze, and the wave comment is always “poor surf conditions.” The energy levels bounce between weak (102) and moderate (276), but with that wind, it’s all messy.
There are a few mornings like the 20th, 26th, and 27th where the wind goes offshore, but the swell is only 1ft to 2ft. That’s just not enough push for a good wave. The afternoon of the 30th and morning of the 31st have a brief moment of offshore wind, but again, the swell is tiny and the wave state is unknown.
There is one brief standout on the morning of the 29th of August. We see the biggest energy reading of the whole run at 374, and a 3ft swell from the SSW with a 17-second period. The wind is a light cross-shore, and the wave state is “light cross-shore with small crossing wind ripples.” That’s about as good as it gets here, but honestly, 3ft on a sheltered reef isn’t going to blow anyone’s mind. It’s a slight chance for a few closeouts.
Bottom line: If you’re a kite surfer, the consistent cross-onshore wind and small waves might look fun. For a paddle surfer, it’s a blank run. Don’t hold your breath, but forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
