Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this is a tough run. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak swell with poor conditions. The first real sniff of anything rideable doesn’t show up until Saturday, July 18th, and even then it’s a mixed bag.
For the first week and a half, from now through Friday the 17th, we’re stuck with ankle-to-knee high waves that are mostly messy from wind or just plain flat. The combined energy sits in the weak range (under 100), mostly bouncing between 6 and 51. The water temp is sitting at 75°F which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus if you’re just floating around.
The one and only standout in this entire forecast falls on Saturday morning, July 18th at 8th Street Jetty. The swell finally bumps up to a clean 4 ft from the SSW with a short period of 6 seconds. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the WSW at 15 mph, and the combined energy jumps to 117 (moderate range). That’s the best we’re going to see. Now, the short period means it’ll be a bit quick and sectiony, but with that clean wind, it’s the only slot worth paddling out for. This break is very consistent, which is a plus, but it’s an advanced spot, so keep that in mind. The swell direction is SSW, and the optimum here is NE, so it’s not a perfect match, but on a clean 4 ft day, you take what you can get.
After that Saturday morning window, it dies back to nothing again. The afternoon of the 18th drops to 0.3 ft with a long, 13-second period from the SE that’s basically just a wash. The rest of the run into July 24th stays tiny with onshore or cross winds, with the combined energy occasionally climbing back into triple digits (101-123) on July 22nd and 23rd, but the swell is still only 3-4 ft, period is short (5-6 seconds), and the wind is cross or onshore, making for lumpy, choppy conditions. Not worth it for surfing.
So, bottom line: if you want a wave, your only real shot is Saturday morning, July 18th. After that, it’s a long wait for something that might turn up. For the rest of the week, it’s more of a lake than a surf break.
Rusty.
