The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for 8th Street Jetty over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim run. The forecast is showing a whole lot of nothing for the first week, and even when we get a bit of energy later, the conditions aren’t going to play nice.
We’re starting off with a real flat spell. From Monday 13th July right through to the end of that week, the swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and the energy readings are weak – often below 30 (33 is the highest early on). The wind is all over the shop, mostly cross or cross-on, and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” This is a beach/jetty setup, so it needs a bit of push to work, and it just isn’t there. You’d be wasting your time paddling out.
There’s a gap of several days here with no real surf to recommend. The first hint of something bigger shows up on Monday 20th July. The swell picks up to 5ft from the ENE, with a combined energy of 123 (moderate). But that’s paired with a cross-on wind from the ENE, making it choppy. The wave comment is still “poor surf conditions.” The afternoon of the 20th sees a bit more size at 5ft from the NE, energy 214 (moderate), but the wind is onshore and the comment remains poor. This is a tough one – the swell is there, but the wind is going to ruin it.
Tuesday 21st July keeps the swell around 4ft from the ENE, energy 163, but again, cross-on winds and fairly choppy conditions. Not a winner.
The best chance in this whole outlook, and I’m saying this with a heavy heart, is probably Wednesday 22nd July. The swell holds at 4ft from the E, energy 128, but the wind is SSE cross-on, and it’s “moderate cross-onshore and choppy.” It’s not great, but it’s the most consistent size we see. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 75°.
For the rest of the run, we get a drop-off again. Thursday 23rd July has a bit of energy (83) with a clean cross-off wind in the afternoon from the WNW, but the swell is only 3ft and short period (5 seconds). Not much to write home about. After that, it’s back to tiny waves and flat spells right through to the 28th.
Honestly, for 8th Street Jetty, this is a blank run. None of the windows are worth getting excited about. The swell that does show up is too short-period and wind-affected for a beach/jetty to shape up well. If you’re a kiter, those afternoons with moderate onshore wind and some chop might be more your speed, but for paddle surfing, it’s a hard pass. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, keep your board in the car.
