The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The outlook for the next 16 days at 8th Street Jetty is a tough one. This is a beach/jetty setup that’s fairly exposed to swell, but honestly, there’s a real drought of decent surf for the foreseeable future. We’re looking at a long stretch of wind-affected, small, and messy conditions, with almost nothing to get excited about.
The first week is a write-off. From Wednesday the 19th through to the end of August, it’s all poor surf conditions. The swell is tiny, mostly under 1 ft, coming from the SE with short periods around 8 seconds, meaning weak, weak waves. The combined energy is low, between 12 and 73 (very weak), and the wind is often cross-on or cross, making it choppy and lumpy. The water temperature is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 76°F, but that’s the only positive.
The only faint glimmer of hope comes right at the end of the period. On Monday, the 31st of August, there’s a morning window where the surf is described as "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." The swell is a tiny 2 ft from the SE with a period of 11 seconds, which is a bit more groundswell feel, but the combined energy is still only 90 (weak). The wind is a gentle breeze from the north, making it clean, but it’s still a far cry from good. The rest of the first week of September is more of the same: small, cross-on, and poor.
Given the consistent lack of quality, this spot is a non-starter. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now, with that fresh, cross-onshore wind and building swell up to 4 ft towards the end of August. For the surfers, it’s a waiting game. The only comfort is that this spot is very consistent, so it tends not to stay poor for long. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the boards in the car.
Rusty.
