The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
Honestly, folks, I’ve scanned the next 16 days and it’s a tough one. We’re looking at a real flat spell for the most part. There’s a long stretch from the start, all the way from Sunday the 19th of July, right through to the end of the month, where the surf is tiny or non-existent. The swell energy is just not there, with the combined energy barely cracking 100 (7 to 104) for the whole period, and most days it’s a struggle to find anything rideable. The wind is a bit of a joker too, swinging around a lot, but it won’t matter much with no waves.
Let’s break it down. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th of July, we’ve got a pathetic 0.3 ft of swell from the SE with a long period of 13 seconds, but it’s just a ghost. The wind is clean, offshore on Sunday, but there’s nothing to surf. Tuesday the 21st brings a bit of a pulse – 3 ft from the SSE, but the period is a shocking 5 seconds. That’s pure wind chop, and with a moderate onshore breeze, it’s just a mess. The combined energy is only 48, so weak.
The rest of the week and into the next is a write-off. Wednesday the 22nd shows zero swell. Thursday the 23rd, a tiny 1.0 ft from the NE with a 4-second period. It’s just not happening. The best we see is a tiny spike of 3 ft from the ESE on Sunday the 26th, but with a cross-onshore wind and a combined energy of 104, it’s still poor and not worth paddling out for.
Moving into the first week of August, there’s a tiny flicker. Monday the 3rd of August morning, we get 3 ft from the ENE with a 6-second period. The wind is glassy, which is a major positive for clean conditions. The combined energy is 59, so still weak. It’s the best offering in the whole outlook, but it’s really only for the die-hards on a longboard or a foil. The break is 8th Street Jetty, an advanced spot that’s very consistent, but with this tiny swell, it’s just not going to fire. It’s a beach and jetty setup, so the long period swells we saw earlier (13 seconds) would have been better off at a point or reef, but we didn’t have the size for that either.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no drama there.
For a spot like this, a blank run like this is pretty normal. The long-range calls are a bit more promising, but still very uncertain. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, the board stays in the car.
Rusty.
