The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s run through what’s cookin’ for 8th Street Jetty. I’m gonna be straight with you – the next couple weeks are looking real flat. Don’t rush to get your wetsuit on just yet.
The water temp is 75°, which feels a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but that’s about the only nice thing I can say.
Starting off on Tuesday, July 14th, we got tiny, weak swell – maybe 1 foot of short-period SE windswell. The wind is side-shore and bumpy, making everything messy. Wednesday the 15th ain't any better; the swell is still puny and the wind, while cleaner, is side-offshore. Thursday the 16th sees the swell drop to almost nothing – 0.3 feet. It’s a brutal start.
We’re looking at a long, flat stretch. Friday the 17th has a 0.3 foot, long-period SE groundswell at 15 seconds, but it’s matched with a side-offshore breeze early. Still, 0.3 feet is barely a ripple. Over the weekend and into next week, it’s the same tune: tiny waves, 0.3 to 2 feet, with changing winds.
You gotta wait a long time. The first glimmer of something rideable don't show up until Friday, July 24th. The morning has some 1 foot, 14-second SE groundswell with glassy conditions. The combined energy is moderate (71). It’s surfable, but it’s still real ordinary. That afternoon the swell builds a touch to 2 feet, but the onshore wind ruins it.
Saturday, July 25th, is the closest we got to a standout, and that’s not saying a lot. The morning brings a 2 foot, 11-second ESE groundswell, with a moderate combined energy of 135. The wind is side-shore, so there’ll be some texture. But for this break, we want it coming from the NE, and this is from the ESE, so it won’t be at its best.
After Saturday, it fades back to tiny surf, with poor conditions and onshore winds through the end of the month. There’s really nothing to get fired up about.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day run, the pickings are super slim. If you absolutely gotta paddle out, your best bet is the morning of Saturday, July 25th, with that 2 foot ESE swell and some luck with the wind. But even then, keep those expectations real low. For most of this stretch, I’d say leave the board at home.
Rusty.
