The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, but in feet and miles. Let's break down 8th Street Jetty.
Honestly, it’s a tough slog on the whole. For more than a week, from now until the start of September, it’s flat and choppy. The water’s around 77°, just a tick warmer than usual, but that’s the only good news. We’re looking at dribbly little waves, mostly from the SE, and the wind’s all out of sorts. The first real chance of a wave doesn’t roll in until Thursday, September 3rd. So there’s a long, quiet stretch of nothing.
Now, jump ahead to that Thursday morning, September 3rd. Now we’ve got something. The wind goes north, blowing light offshore. The swell builds to about 5ft from the east, with a combined energy of 599 – solid, moderate power. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s a mid-range swell, not a long-period groundswell, but it’ll have some shape. This is the best bet of the forecast.
But the real winner is that Thursday afternoon. The wind dies to flat calm – totally glassy. The swell hangs around 5ft from the ESE, and the energy ratchets up to 680. The report says "very good surf conditions". For a beach and jetty break, glassy conditions with that much size is a gold mine. It’ll be clean, lined up, and fun. It might be a bit much for beginners at 5ft, but for the rest of us, this is the session to mark on the calendar. Crowds can be a thing at this spot, but for that quality, it’s a no-brainer.
Friday morning, September 4th, is also looking good. Glassy again, with a 6ft ENE swell. The energy is still strong at 563. It’s a little bigger and a shorter 8-second period, so the waves might be a bit lumpier and less perfect than the day before. But a morning glass-off with a 6ft swell is still a very good time. The afternoon, the wind swings south and kicks up, making it choppy and messy.
Honestly, those two windows on the 3rd and the morning of the 4th of September are the only games in town. Before that, it’s a bust. After that Thursday afternoon glass-off, the 4th afternoon goes to crap. It’s a long wait, but that glassy session on the 3rd at 8th Street Jetty is the one to hunt for. The rest? Leave the board on the car.
Rusty.
