Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Eighthth-Street-Jetty.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with ya – this is a tough stretch. We’re lookin’ at a solid run of days with barely a ripple to get excited about. The whole 16-day window is pretty much flat-lining for any kind of decent surf. There’s a long gap of no real recommendations from the start, right through the first week and beyond.
From Sunday 5th July right through to Sunday 12th July, it’s a sad story. Swell heights are tiny, mostly below 3 ft, with weak energy. The best of a bad lot might be Tuesday 7th July afternoon with 3 ft from the ENE and a period of 6 seconds, but the combined energy is still weak (60) and the wind is a moderate cross-shore, leaving it all messy. Not worth paddlin’ out for.
Now, come Monday 13th July morning, we finally see a pulse of something. Swell jumps to 5 ft from the E, period 8 seconds. The combined energy hits 221 – that’s moderate energy finally. Wind is moderate cross-shore from the NE, which is better, but the description says “moderate cross-shore with a cross-chop” – still not perfect. By Monday afternoon, the swell bumps to 6 ft from the E and the energy jumps all the way to 684 (strong wave energy). But the wind switches to a moderate cross-onshore from the ESE, and they’re callin’ it “choppy.” That 6 ft is gettin’ into the “too big for beginners” range, and with that wind, it’s gonna be a bumpy mess. Might be one for the experts only, and even then, the quality ain’t there.
After that, it fizzles again. Tuesday 14th July morning sees 3 ft from the E, period 8 seconds, energy down to 144, but it’s cross-on from a light S breeze – better, but still small and weak. Then from Wednesday 15th July right through to Monday 20th July, we’re back to flat or near-flat conditions, with swell under 0.7 ft, and energy readings in the single digits. Nothing doin’.
So, the one real standout here – if you can call it that – is Monday 13th July afternoon. That 6 ft E swell with that strong (684) energy is the biggest pulse in the whole window. But the wind makes it messy, so don’t expect perfection. For the brave, maybe a few lumpy ones. Everything else is a write-off.
Water temps ain’t mentioned in the detail for this break, so I can’t say much on that.
This jetty setup with all these weak, short-period swells and onshore winds – honestly, for most of this period, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s just not our time, mates.
Hang in there. The forecasts can always change, but right now, it’s a quiet spell.
Rusty.
