The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let's be straight with you – the outlook for 8th Street Jetty over the next 16 days is a tough one. For a spot that's "very consistent" and "fairly exposed," we're looking at a long stretch of flat, messy, or just plain small conditions. The first decent bump doesn't show up until the start of August, so we've got a real gap of over a week of nothing to get excited about.

The water temperature is sitting at 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least a duck-dive won't be a shock to the system.

Looking at the start, from Saturday the 18th through the end of the month, it's a washout. We've got rain showers, thunderstorms, and onshore winds chopping up tiny, short-period junk. The swell energy is weak, with values mostly in the single digits or tens (like 17, 63, 39), and the wave heights are barely a ripple. There are a few mornings with clean offshore winds from the NW, like Sunday the 19th and Thursday the 23rd, but the swell is just 0.3ft to 2ft – you'd be scratching for a ride. The combined energy is still low (e.g., 14, 26), so it's really not worth paddling out.

The first day that offers a real pulse is Saturday the 1st of August. The swell picks up to 4ft from the SE, with a combined energy hitting 117 to 121, which is a moderate energy level. But here's the kicker – the wind is a cross-onshore from the E and ENE at 9 mph. That's going to make it pretty choppy and bumpy. For 8th Street Jetty, a beach/jetty setup, that's not ideal. The swell period is a short 6 seconds, so it's going to be a bit of a messy, short-interval chop. It's a day for the advanced crew only, as the 4ft height with that wind state will be a handful. The direction from the SE is hitting the optimum NE direction on a cross, so it's not the best angle.

Sunday the 2nd of August drops right back down to 0.7ft, back to the flat spell. So, if you're looking for a standout, the best on offer is that Saturday the 1st of August. It's not great, but it's the only pulse of size in the whole window. Given the lack of consistency in the forecast, a blank run like this is more normal for the area when the stars don't align.

Rusty.
