Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break this down for you in feet and Fahrenheit.
First and foremost, this stretch of coast is in a proper funk. We’re talking about a long, dry run with no decent surf for the whole 16-day stretch. The first day that even shows a recommendation is Sunday, July 5th, and it’s rough. That means a solid week and a half with nothing worth paddling for.
Sunday the 5th starts with a tiny 1 ft swell out of the southeast, period of 9 seconds, and a risk of thunderstorms with a light cross-on breeze from the south at 6 mph. The wave energy is a weak (12). Nothing happening.
Monday the 6th brings slightly more size – about 2 ft – but the period drops to a lousy 5 seconds, so it’s all wind slop. The wind turns moderate cross-onshore by the afternoon, with energy at (53). Still poor.
Tuesday the 7th gives us a window of glassy conditions in the morning, but it’s only 1 ft from the SE with a 10-second period and energy of (26). Too small to care about.
From there it’s the same sad story: small, short-period swell and messy winds all the way through the first week and into the second. A few windows of clean wind, but no wave height to back it up.
The only moment that looks like it has any real grunt comes Monday, July 13th in the morning. We’ve got a 5 ft swell from the east, period at 6 seconds, and combined energy jumps to (201). That’s moderate energy, but it’s a short-period swell that’ll be fat and lumpy. It’s the biggest we see, but it’s still rated as poor surf conditions.
After that, it’s a rapid fade. By Thursday the 16th, we’re down to less than 1 ft with clean offshore wind, but no wave height. Energy drops to single digits.
The water temp on that first Sunday sits at 76°F, with an anomaly of 5°F – that’s much warmer than normal. Nice for a dip, but no good for surfing. The jetty break often has crowds, but it’s moot with no swell.
This is an unusual flat spell for a spot that’s usually consistent. It’s a rare blank run, but that’s where we’re at. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s not a single standout session.
Rusty.
