The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for your local patch.

Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a tough watch. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak, and messy surf ahead with barely a pulse. The first proper chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until the morning of Monday the 31st of August, and even that’s a bit of a gamble.

From now through the end of August, it’s mostly ankle-snappers. The swell hangs around 0.6ft to 2ft, mostly out of the ESE or SE, with periods all over the shop but often short and weak. The combined wave energy is mostly in the dust – single or low double digits (like 26, 52, 18) – so there’s just no push. The wind is a bit of a mixed bag, too, though we do get some glassy mornings on Friday the 21st and Monday the 24th when the breeze drops right off. But even then, with that tiny swell, you’re better off on a longboard or just having a swim.

We do see a blip on the morning of Monday the 31st of August. The swell picks up to 6ft from the East, and the combined energy jumps to 250 (moderate energy). That’s the most promising bump in the whole outlook. But it’s a short-period swell at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and fat. The morning has light cross-offshore wind, which will clean it up, but by afternoon the wind swings onshore and chops it out. It’s a one-morning wonder. That 6ft is still okay for intermediate surfers, but bigger than that for beginners.

Then we quickly fade back into the doldrums into the first days of September, with swell dropping again and onshore winds making a mess.

There’s no standout here, really. If I had to point to the least-bad moment, it’s that Monday morning, the 31st of August, at 8th Street Jetty. The swell direction (E) is a bit off the optimum (NE), but it’s the only time the ocean bothers to show up with any size. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing crazy there.

Best Bet: Monday morning, 31st of August, dawn patrol. 6ft easterly swell, glassy and clean with that light offshore wind. It won’t be world-class, but it’ll be the best we’ve seen in a fortnight. Crowds are often around here, so expect some company.

Rusty.
