Right. Grab a coffee, sit down, and let’s talk about 8th Street Jetty. If you’re thinking about getting wet here, you’re going to need some patience—and maybe a packed lunch. This is a period of almost constant underpowered, short-period slop, and not once does the forecast give us anything worth paddling out for. The combined energy levels just flop around between 6 and 149 the whole way through, but the swell heights rarely even nudge past 3 ft and the periods are mostly tiny.
Water temp is about average for the time of year. Nothing unusual there.
From Monday, 6th July right through to Saturday, 18th July, there isn’t a single session worth chasing. Swell heights hover from 0.3 ft up to, at best, 5 ft on the afternoon of Saturday the 18th. That slight bump in height brings 5 ft from the south, but look closer: the period is a weak 6 seconds, the combined energy is still only a moderate 149, and the wind is onshore and moderate. It’s a messy, choppy, short-period windswell. Nothing a surfer would paddle for. 8th Street is a beach/jetty setup, and with that much wind and that poor shape, it’s more of a kite-surfing vibe than a paddle-surfing one.
The cleanest windows fall on the morning of Friday the 17th of July—that little 0.7 ft glassy morning with the wind a whisper. But 0.7 ft at 7 seconds? That’s not surf. Not even a splash. That same morning shows a combined energy of just 8. It’s a teardrop.
There are long gaps here. After the 17th, we stretch all the way to Tuesday the 21st for the last data, and still nothing changes—roof-high dribble from the southeast with tiny energy numbers. No standouts. No clean groundswell events. The swell direction never properly aligns with the optimum NE directional window for this spot either.
So the honest word from me is this: park the board. It’s going to be a flat, frustrating run. 8th Street Jetty needs a proper east or northeast groundswell with some size and a clean wind, and we’ve got none of that in sight. Sometimes these extended flat spells are just normal for this area, and right now, it’s one of those times. Forecasts can flick around, but this one looks set to be stubborn.
