Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at the forecast for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – this is a tough one.
We’re looking at a long, dry spell here. For the first two weeks of the outlook, from July 3rd right through to July 16th, there is essentially no surf worth paddling out for at 8th Street Jetty. The swell heights are tiny, mostly below 1 feet, and the wave energy is incredibly weak, often below 50. The swell periods are short, mostly under 10 seconds, so there’s no punch or shape to anything. It’s a complete flat spell. For a break that’s very consistent when it’s on, this is a frustrating stretch. Long gaps like this aren’t unusual for the area, but it doesn’t make it any easier.
We finally get a flicker of hope around Friday, July 18th. The morning shows a small bump in swell, about 4 feet from the south, but with a period of only 5 seconds – that’s windswell, messy and weak. The combined wave energy is moderate, at 97. The wind is a moderate cross-shore (SSW at 12 mph), which will create some chop and make it a bit of a battle. It’s still not great, but it’s the best we’ve seen. Saturday afternoon stays similar with 4 feet of south swell and a 6-second period, but the wind picks up to 19 mph onshore, making it lumpy and hard work.
So, honestly, the only standout, and I use that term loosely, is the morning of Friday, July 18th. Even then, it’s more of a “maybe get wet” scenario than a proper surf. The water temperature is sitting at a warm 73°F, which is a touch warmer than average. If you’ve got a kite, the afternoon winds on the 18th might offer more fun than a surfboard, given the onshore breeze and short-period slop.
Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
