The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for the next couple of weeks. I’m looking at one spot only, so that’s where our focus will be.
To be honest, the outlook is a flat, quiet one. For the first week and a half, nothing is really worth paddling out for. We’ve got a long gap where the swell is tiny and the conditions are just messy or weak. Most of the time, the surf is below knee-high and the energy is lacking. There’s a stretch from Saturday the 22nd all the way through to around Monday the 31st of August where it’s just not happening—tiny waves, poor surf, a lot of onshore or cross-off winds that aren’t doing us any favours. The water temp at the start is 78°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a curiosity, but it doesn’t help the waves.
Now, if you’re desperate, the only flicker of something usable appears on Thursday morning the 3rd of September. 8th Street Jetty (a beach/jetty setup) will have some small 2 ft swell coming from the SE with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at best at 107, so there’s a little push but nothing major. What makes this one stand out is the glassy conditions—dead calm, offshore wind from the NNE at only 3 mph. That’s a major positive because it’ll be clean, even if the waves are small and weak. It won’t be crowded, but keep in mind this spot can draw a few locals. It’s not a standout for size or power, but for the cleanest, most tolerable surf in this whole 16-day window, this is your best bet. Still, it’s only for those who don’t mind tiny waves.
The following Friday morning the 4th of September also shows a bit of clean surf with offshore winds from the NW, but again, it’s tiny at 1 ft. The gap before that is over a week of near-nothing. The rest of the second week is just as flat and uninspiring. This is a tough run for the area.
Rusty, signing off.
