Table - best surf conditions forecast for 8th Street Jetty over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for 8th Street Jetty is a long, flat, and frustrating stretch. The forecast is pretty grim overall, with no real standout sessions to get excited about. We’re looking at a solid run of poor surf that just doesn’t want to let up.
The first week is a write-off. From Thursday the 9th right through to the end of the week, we’re kicking off with tiny, weak waves. The swell is barely a ripple, mostly around 0.7ft to 1ft from the east, with a combined energy that’s weak, sitting in the single digits or low 30s. The winds are a mess – cross-onshore, choppy, and just ugly. There’s nothing to recommend here. It’s a long, flat gap.
We roll into the second week, and it’s more of the same. The swell tries to nudge up a little on Monday the 13th, hitting about 3ft to 4ft from the east, but the wind is still cross-onshore and choppy. The energy picks up a bit into the low 100s (133 on Tuesday morning), but the conditions are still “poor surf conditions”. It’s frustrating, because there’s a little energy there, but it’s all chop.
The only glimmer in this whole period shows up on Monday the 20th of July. We finally get a spike of south swell pushing 5ft, with a combined energy of 130 – that’s actually moderate wave energy. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW, turning it clean. The wave comment even says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” with a score of 1 out of 10. It’s not a classic, but for this stretch, it’s the best on offer. The swell direction is south, which is not the jetty’s optimum NE, but the clean conditions make it worth a look. Keep in mind, the period is only 6 seconds, so it’s short-period windswell, not a long groundswell. It’s a small window for someone who’s desperate for a paddle.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak surf and onshore winds for the rest of the forecast. Honestly, for a break that’s “very consistent”, this is a real bummer of a run. The blank period is long and the surf is just not cooperating.
Stay patient, check the forecast again in a few days, because it can’t stay this flat forever.
