The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: if you’re looking to paddle out at 8th Street Jetty over the next couple of weeks, you’re gonna be fighting a losing battle. This is a tough stretch, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it.
Right from the get-go, Monday the 17th is a write-off. We’ve got poor surf conditions with practically no swell and a risk of thunderstorms. That pattern of tiny, messy surf—nothing over 1 ft—just keeps rollin’ through the week with onshore and cross-shore winds messing up what little bump there is. You’ll see a little clean-up with glassy conditions on the morning of Saturday the 22nd, but with swell at only 1 ft and an 8-second period, it’s barely a ripple.
There’s a real dry spell here: from Monday the 17th all the way through to the afternoon of Friday the 28th, there’s basically nothing worth getting excited about. That’s nearly 12 days of flat to tiny, grovelly conditions.
The first hint of a pulse shows up Thursday the 27th. Combined energy hits 187 (moderate) in the morning and 182 in the afternoon, but the swell is a weak 2 ft to 3 ft from the SE, and we’ve got a fresh cross-onshore wind at 15 to 19 mph. The water’s a bit warmer than average for this time of year at 77°, but that doesn’t help the chop.
Now, Friday the 28th is where things get interesting but tricky. By the afternoon, the swell bumps to 3 ft from the SE with a 12-second period and combined energy of 301 (moderate). That’s the biggest energy we’ve seen. Winds swing around to a clean cross-offshore from the NNE at 16 mph. It’s still a bit on the small side, and this spot is a beach/jetty setup, so that long-period groundswell (over 11 seconds) might make the waves a little straight and fat. It’s listed as marginal, not great. This is the only session that’s even close to a standout, but honestly, it’s for advanced surfers only, and crowds are often a problem here.
The weekend of the 30th and 31st stays poor: 5 ft on Sunday morning but with onshore winds again. Then we run into September with tiny, weak swell.
Bottom line: this is one of those blank runs that’s normal for the area. The only flicker of hope is that Friday afternoon the 28th. It’s not gonna be epic, but if you’re desperate for a paddle with clean wind and a bit of push, that’s your window. For beginners, stay home—anything over 5 ft is too much, and we barely get there, but the conditions are so shifty you’ll just get frustrated.
Keep an eye on it—forecasts change, and it tends not to stay this dead for long.
