The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s going on over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, straight up, it’s a grim stretch at 8th Street Jetty. There’s just nothing on the cards worth paddling out for. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for decent surf. Every single day is tagged as “poor surf conditions,” so I’m not gonna sugarcoat it.
The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s not disappointing.
You’ve got a couple of mornings with glassy conditions, like on Friday 17 July, when the wind goes NE at 3 mph and it’s dead flat with a tiny 0.3 ft easterly, period 15 seconds – that’s proper groundswell but it’s just got no height to it. Then again on Monday 20 July, it’s glassy but there’s zero swell. So it’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. A few other mornings have light offshore or cross-off breezes, but the swell is consistently tiny – never above 3 ft, and that one comes with a short 5-second period and onshore wind.
The biggest combined energy we see is 95 (still weak energy) on the afternoon of Tuesday 28 July, with 3 ft from the SE at 8 seconds, but it’s onshore, so you’re looking at junky, bumpy waves. Not worth the drive.
There’s a long gap of tiny surf, then a slight bump in the final few days, but nothing that breaks the “poor” rating. For a break that’s very consistent, it’s a real bummer. But hey, it’s a beach and jetty setup, and with the wind and weak swell, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those afternoons when the breeze picks up.
So, no standout days. No hidden gems. Just a blank run. Keep the board in the car and watch the forecasts – it tends not to stay this flat forever.
Rusty.
