The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s shaping up for the Tramandai Pier zone. There’s some waiting involved, but a couple of windows are worth paddling out for.
The first few days are a mixed start. Saturday 22 August sees clean surf at about 6ft from the S, but the wind is cross-off and the tide feels a bit off. Combined wave energy is moderate (665 in the morning, 712 in the afternoon). Not worth cancelling plans for. Sunday 23 August morning is where it wakes up: 7ft of S swell, period 12 seconds, and offshore wind from the W. This is solid intermediate to experienced stuff. Energy jumps to 1370, which is moderate to strong, and the water temp is about average for the time of year. This is the standout of the first week for *Tramandai Pier (Platforma)* – clean, offshore, proper groundswell lines. Sunday arvo gets a bit bumpier with cross-off wind but still 8ft. Monday 24 August morning is another solid call with 8ft of S swell, period 14 seconds, and light cross-off wind. Energy is strong (2570). That long period (over 11 seconds) might make it a little too straight for the pier setup – better for a point or reef, but for experienced surfers, it’s clean and punchy.
From Tuesday 25 August through to Friday 28 August morning, it’s mostly a write-off. Cross-on to onshore winds, choppy, energy dropping. There’s a brief clean window on Friday 28 August morning with 6ft of ENE swell and cross-off wind, but the period is only 9 seconds – short-period windswell. Saturday 29 August sees a drop to 6ft ENE swell, but glassy conditions on Saturday afternoon. Low energy (376), but a rare clean spell for a longboard if you’re keen.
The following week, from Sunday 30 August through Wednesday 02 September morning, is mostly poor to ordinary. There’s a massive spike on Monday 31 August morning: 10ft of ENE swell with a 7-second period, cross-shore wind. That’s too big and too messy for this break – better for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Energy is moderate (991), but the swell is raw and short-period.
Then comes the real gem in the second week. Wednesday 02 September afternoon, wind swings offshore (W at 30 mph), and we get 7ft of S swell with a 12-second period. Energy is solid (1333), clean. But Thursday 03 September morning is the pick of the whole outlook: 8ft of S swell, 12 seconds, offshore wind (W 20 mph), excellent conditions for experienced surfers. Energy is strong at 1732. That’s the one to mark – clean, strong, lined up. Thursday arvo fades a bit but remains surfable.
Friday 04 September onward into the weekend gets ugly again with strong NE cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions. The last note on Sunday 06 September morning shows a pulse of 6ft E swell (short period, 8 seconds) but clean with light cross-off breeze – a hopeful finish.
Overall, the standout sessions: Sunday 23 August morning and Thursday 03 September morning. Both have proper S groundswell, decent size, and clean offshore wind. The rest is either small, messy, or too big and blown out. There’s a long gap of poor conditions from Tuesday 25 August through Friday 28 August morning, with only brief clean windows. But that Thursday 03 September session has real promise – just watch the long-period caveat for the pier.
Rusty.
