The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break this down for Tramandai Pier (Platforma).
We’ve got a pretty quiet start to the outlook. The first waves worth talking about don’t show up until Saturday morning, August 22nd. Before that, it’s mostly small, messy, or blown out. Tuesday the 18th has a 5ft swell from the ENE at 8 seconds, but a cross-off wind and only weak energy (354) – it’s clean but gutless. The rest of that week is onshore or lumpy, with Thursday the 20th seeing a jump to 7ft but a fresh cross-on northeasterly at 22 mph ruins it. Skip that whole stretch.
Saturday morning the 22nd kicks things off with a 7ft SSW swell, 8-second period, and a clean cross-off wind from the WSW at 12 mph. The combined energy is 1047 (moderate) and conditions are clean. The wave comment calls it marginal on the tide, but it’s the best we’ve seen yet. The afternoon holds similar size (8ft) and energy (1186), still clean. First real chance for a surf.
But the absolute standout is Monday the 24th of August. The morning is a beauty. A 8ft swell from the SSE with a 13-second period – that’s proper long-period groundswell. Combined energy is a strong 2513. And the wind? Glassy – a light 3 mph from the NW, dead calm. The wave comment says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” That’s the one. At 8ft, it’s big and only for experienced crew, and the long period means it’ll wall up nicely at a beach/pier spot – clean, long lines, but may break a bit straight. Paddling out will be easier between sets. The afternoon sees the wind turn cross-on, so hit the morning.
After that, it drops off. Tuesday the 25th is messy, Wednesday the 26th morning has a small 3ft clean S swell (11 seconds, energy 449) but it’s minor. From the 27th into September it’s mostly onshore, weak, or rainy – lots of small ENE and S swells with onshore or cross-on winds, energy staying under 300 for most. The final days into 2nd September are a loss: heavy rain, strong onshore winds over 19 mph, and tiny waves. That blank run from the 27th onward lasts about a week.
Water temp is 60°F, which is about 2°F cooler than average for this time of year – chilly, so a good wetsuit is a must.
Best session: 100% Monday morning the 24th. Saturday the 22nd morning is a solid backup. The rest is quiet.
