The Lowdown
Ah, mate, it's a bit of a mixed bag on the way for Tramandai Pier (Platforma) over the next couple of weeks. The water is running a fair bit colder than usual for this time of year, sitting at 59°F, so you'll be wanting a good fullsuit.
We've got a small window of surfable waves starting Saturday, July 18th, but it's not firing. The morning is a bit of a scramble with a 7ft swell from the ENE at 9 seconds and a light cross breeze, but it’s looking messy. The real bright spot of the first week is actually Saturday afternoon. The breeze swings offshore, cleaning up that 6ft ENE swell (combined energy of 599). It’s not huge, but it’s clean and the best we’ll see for a few days. Sunday morning holds similar size but gets a bit bumpy, and by Sunday afternoon it goes glassy with a 6ft swell, though the score is a bit middling.
Then we hit a dry spell. From Monday the 20th right through to Friday the 24th, it’s a write-off. The wind is onshore, the swell is small and choppy, and you’re better off doing something else. It’s a proper gap of about five days with nothing worth paddling out for.
Things perk up a little on Saturday the 25th. A clean 7ft ENE swell rolls in with a light offshore wind for the morning – that’s a solid session for an intermediate, and the afternoon stays clean too at 6ft. Sunday the 26th is also clean in the morning, but the swell drops off a bit. The following week gets a bit more interesting. Monday the 27th is a no-go with onshore winds, but mark your calendar for Friday, July 31st. The forecast is building a big 10ft E swell at 8 seconds, but the wind is looking clean and offshore in the afternoon. However, at that size, this is strictly for experts only – it’s a serious amount of water (combined energy of 1710) and will be too much for the average surfer. The morning of August 1st is also a big 8ft E swell, but the wind is onshore and messy.
After that, things settle back down. The first week of August, it’s a lot of small, cleanish waves with the 5ft to 5ft range, but nothing that’s going to get the heart racing. The standout overall is that Saturday afternoon, July 18th, for a clean, fun wave, but if you’ve got the experience and the nerve, Friday, July 31st is the big one, though it’s a long way out and the conditions could shift.
Rusty.
