The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Tramandai Pier over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest, it’s a bit of a slow starter, but there are some interesting whispers on the horizon.
The first real chance to get wet doesn’t show up until Monday the 13th of July. It’s a late afternoon call. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the SSE, with a period of 9 seconds, and a light WSW cross-offshore breeze. The water is a chilly 57°, which is a massive 6° colder than normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate at 311. It’s small and clean but the guidance says it’s a marginal call, so don’t expect too much.
Tuesday the 14th is a bit of a write-off. The morning sees a jump in size to 5ft from the SE with a 10-second period, but the wind is a cross-shore from the NE. The swell energy is moderate (504), but the conditions are already described as choppy by the afternoon. The 15th and 16th are also poor, with small, weak swell and bad wind angles. Wednesday the 15th has a 3ft ESE swell, but it’s a short period decayed 7-second wave in the afternoon. Thursday the 16th drops to 3ft. It’s a flat, frustrating stretch.
Now we get to the first real standout. Saturday the 18th of July. The morning is still a bit messy with a 7ft ENE swell, but the afternoon is where it’s at. The wind goes completely glassy (SSW, 3 mph), and the swell holds at 6ft from the ENE with a 9-second period. The energy is strong at 510. This is a clean, workable window. The break is inconsistent, but when it’s glassy like this, it’s worth the gamble. Expect crowds to be possible.
We get a little pulse on Sunday the 19th morning, but it’s cross-shore and messy, then it dies completely in the afternoon.
The next notable window is Tuesday the 21st of July. The morning brings a 3ft SSE swell with a long 11-second period, and a clean WSW cross-offshore breeze. The swell energy is 456. The afternoon is even cleaner with a 3ft SSE swell and a light WNW offshore wind. The long period (11 seconds) will give the waves some shape, but it might be a bit straight for the beach break setup. Still, clean and small is fun.
Now, the second week is where it gets interesting but less certain. Wednesday the 22nd of July shows a 7ft S swell with an 11-second period, but the wind is mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, making it choppy. The energy is very strong (1106). It’s a big, powerful swell, but the wind ruins it.
The real big one is on Friday the 24th of July. The afternoon has a 8ft ENE swell with a short 7-second period, but the wind is fresh offshore from the W at 19 mph. The combined energy is massive at 1124. This is a big, powerful, and clean setup. However, 8ft is getting into expert territory, especially with that short period. It’s a standout for the strong surfers.
Then Saturday the 25th of July is something else. The morning is a 10ft ENE swell, and the afternoon jumps to a massive 12ft from the ENE, both with an 11-second period. The wind is offshore or cross-offshore. The energy is enormous (1776 and 3445). This is a very powerful, very big swell. The guidance says it’s predicted to be too big for this break, so only the absolute top-tier experts should even look at it. For everyone else, it’s a day to watch from the sand.
Sunday the 26th is blown out and messy, with NE winds.
Finally, Monday the 27th of July brings a solid finish. The morning is a 7ft E swell with a 10-second period, and a clean WSW cross-offshore breeze. The energy is strong at 950. The afternoon holds at 7ft with the same clean wind. This is a very good, clean session for experienced surfers. The swell direction (E) is not the optimum SSE, but the quality is there.
Overall, the best on offer is the glassy afternoon on Saturday the 18th of July for a fun, clean session, and the big, clean offshore day on Friday the 24th of July for the experts. The very large swell on the 25th is a weather-watcher for the brave.
Rusty.
