The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you—this stretch is a tough one for the next couple of weeks. The Tramandai Pier (Platforma) area is set for a long, frustrating run of average to rubbish conditions, but there are a couple of genuine standouts if you’re patient.
For the first week, the pattern is messy. Wednesday the 15th has a tiny 4ft swell from the ENE with a short 7-second period, and a light cross-onshore breeze, so it’s pretty lacklustre. Thursday morning the 16th bumps up to 5ft from the ENE, still with a short period and light cross-shore wind, but it’s not worth getting excited about. By Thursday afternoon, it’s dropping to 3ft, so don’t bother. Friday afternoon the 17th sees a jump to 8ft from the ENE, but it’s accompanied by a moderate 16 mph cross-shore wind and the combined energy is a chunky 1057—so there’s power, but the conditions are too choppy for a good wave. That size is also getting too big for beginners.
Saturday the 18th has similar 7–7ft ENE swell, but still with that cross-shore breeze. Not clean.
Now, here’s the standout for the first week: Sunday morning the 19th. The wind goes glassy—totally calm—and swell drops to a manageable 6ft from the ENE with a 9-second period. The combined wave energy is moderate at 585, and the water temperature is 56°, which is much colder than normal for this time of year by over 6°, so definitely bring a thick steamer. That glassy wind means clean, peeling lines, but with it being a beach/pier setup and the period under 11 seconds, it should hold its shape nicely. This is the best on offer early. Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so get in early.
Sunday afternoon sees the wind swing to onshore, killing it. Monday and Tuesday the 20th and 21st are poor, with onshore winds and rain.
Then, another highlight: Wednesday morning the 22nd. The wind goes offshore from the W at just 6 mph, with a 4ft swell from the S at 9 seconds and combined energy of 305. It’s a small clean window, but with offshore breeze it’ll be glassy and fun for a longboard or a fish. That’s a solid little session if you can sneak out.
From there, things drop off again. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are marginal or poor, with rain and messy winds. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are a total write-off with strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy, choppy surf. That stretch from the 23rd to the 26th is a long gap of nothing recommended.
Now, if you can hold out, Monday the 27th has potential—but it’s a beast. Swell jumps to 8ft from the SSE, with a very long 15-second period and combined energy of 3412, which is strong to very strong. That’s a serious groundswell. The period over 15 seconds means these waves will have power and big gaps between sets, and at a beach/pier it could close out and be tricky. This size is for experts only. The wind is a gentle cross-shore, so it’ll be a little bumpy but rideable. Not a true standout for the average punter.
The real hidden gem is Tuesday morning the 28th. The wind goes glassy again—dead calm—swell settles to 5ft from the SSE with a 12-second period and combined energy of 834. That’s a solid groundswell, clean, and a better size for intermediates and above. This could be the session of the whole outlook if the long period doesn’t make it too straight at the pier. It’s a promising call, but remember it’s a week and a half out, so treat it as hopeful.
The rest of the run to the 30th is poor, with onshore winds and messy surf. That big Monday the 27th swell might look tempting for a kite, but for a paddle, the Sunday morning the 19th and Tuesday morning the 28th are your best bets.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the wind, and I’ll catch you in the water.
Rusty.
