The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on the latest for Tramandai Pier.
The surf window is starting a bit slow, but we’ve got a definite peak to aim for. The first half of the week is looking pretty average, but the second half brings a real charge of energy. The standout period is clearly around Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th, with another promising session much later on the 25th.
For your first paddle, the water is sitting at a nippy 57°F, which feels much colder than what’s normal for this time of year down here. You’ll want a good steamer for sure.
Tuesday 14th kicks off pretty rough – a tired 5ft SE swell mixed with a strong NE cross-wind. The water’s a mess with only moderate energy. It’s a tough one to get excited about right now.
The next few days are a write-off, to be honest. Wednesday and most of Thursday are flat and weak. There’s a bit of energy creeping back on Thursday morning with a 5ft ENE swell, but it’s a short 7-second period. It’s just not going to have any shape.
Friday 17th sees the swell build up to a solid 7ft ENE, and the energy jumps, but the wind is still a cross-shore mess. It’s a bit of a lumpy affair.
Now, Saturday 18th afternoon is where it’s at. The wind swings to a light cross-offshore from the north. The 7ft ENE swell cleans right up. The water will be clean and the waves will have a lot more push. This is the best window in the first week. It’s a solid intermediate size.
Sunday 19th morning keeps the clean theme going with a lighter 6ft ENE swell and a gentle cross-offshore wind. It’s not as punchy as Saturday, but it’ll be a hell of a lot of fun.
After that, the wind goes stupid again from the 20th through the 24th. A big, long-period S swell rolls in on Wednesday 22nd. We’re talking 8ft at 13 seconds, with serious energy. But it’s straight onshore with that SE wind. The power is there for the taking, but the surface will be lumpy. At that size and period, it’s for experienced surfers only, and the shape could be tricky.
There’s a long quiet gap of a few days, but then we get a redemption shot. Saturday 25th morning offers up a stellar window. The wind goes offshore from the NW. The swell is 7ft from the ENE. It’s the last real standout, but it’s over a week away, so take it with a pinch of salt.
The crowds at the Pier can be a bit of a hassle sometimes, but on those clean days, it’s worth fighting for a few.
Rusty.
