The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s get straight into the local outlook for the Tramandai Pier (Platforma) area. It’s a beach/pier setup, and honestly, over the next 16 days, it’s a mixed bag of wind-chewed lumps and a few windows where the stars align. The first real chance of a paddle doesn’t show up until Tuesday the 21st, so there’s a bit of a wait. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The overall pattern is frustrating: plenty of swell energy, but the wind and conditions are often messy. The first standout is a quiet, glassy moment on Monday the 27th of July. The best on offer is Tuesday the 21st of July, with a clean morning.
Let’s break it down day by day. From Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th, the surf is marginal at best. We’ve got a 7ft to 6ft ENE swell with a period of 9 seconds, but it’s blown out by cross-shore winds at 12 mph. The wave energy is moderate (713 to 600), but the conditions are bumpy—cross-chop ruins the shape. No real standouts here.
Monday the 20th is still poor, with cross-onshore winds and a 5ft to 6ft ENE swell. The energy drops to 398-445, and it’s choppy. Not worth suiting up.
Now, Tuesday the 21st of July is the real bright spot. The morning brings a 5ft ENE swell with a light offshore wind from the WNW at 6 mph. The wave energy is moderate (354), but the conditions are clean. This is your best chance for a decent session—small but clean, and the offshore will hold the waves up. The afternoon shifts to a cross-offshore with stronger wind, so morning is the call.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are a letdown. The swell gets a bump from the SSE, but strong onshore winds on Wednesday 22nd make it sloppy. Thursday the 23rd morning has a clean window with a 4ft SSE swell and offshore wind from the west at 6 mph. The energy is low (368), but it’s clean. Worth a look if you’re desperate.
Friday the 24th is marginal again, with a 5ft S swell and cross-shore wind. The energy is 450, but it’s not special.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th of July is a write-off. The swell jumps to 7ft from the ENE with a short period of 6-7 seconds, and the wind is cross-onshore at 9-16 mph. The energy is moderate (596-715), but the surf is lumpy and choppy. With the beach setup, this is more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle session.
Then we hit the highlight. Monday the 27th of July morning is marginal, with a 7ft ENE swell and cross-shore wind, but the afternoon is a gem. The wind drops to glassy calm from the south, the swell holds at 6ft with an 8-second period, and the energy is moderate (516). The conditions are glassy—clean, smooth, and the best quality of the whole outlook. The break is inconsistent, but when it’s this clean, it’s worth the wait.
The 28th of July is a step down, with a 4ft SSW swell and light cross-shore wind. The energy is low (301). Not much to write home about.
From the 29th of July into the first week of August, the swell builds big but the wind turns nasty. On the 29th, a 8ft to 8ft S swell with an 11-12 second period hits, but onshore winds at 19 mph ruin it. The energy is strong (1614-1946). This is too big for beginners and only for experts if the wind was clean, but it’s not. The 30th and 31st are similar, with a 8ft to 10ft SE swell and strong onshore winds. The energy is very strong (1933-2974), but it’s lumpy and messy. The beach break will be a washing machine.
The last day of the outlook, Saturday the 1st of August, might be a late save. The morning brings a 7ft SE swell with a 13-second period and a strong offshore wind from the WNW at 19 mph. The energy is very strong (1708), and the offshore wind will clean it up, but it’s big. The long period (13 seconds) means the swell will be powerful and better shaped, but at a beach break, it could close out. The direction is off the optimum SSE, but still, for experienced surfers only, it’s a promising but less certain long-range standout.
Overall, don’t get your hopes up for the first week. The standout is Tuesday the 21st for a small, clean morning, and the glassy Monday afternoon on the 27th is the pick of the entire 16 days. The big swell late in the period is for experts only, and only if you’re willing to handle the clean-up sets.
Rusty.
