The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s just get straight into it. The next couple of weeks at Tramandai Pier is a proper wait-and-see. We’ve got a slow start, one absolute gem of a session, and then a fair bit of smaller, wind-affected slop. Patience is your friend.
Honestly, the first few days aren't worth getting out of bed for. Tuesday the 18th has some chest-high waves, around 5ft from the ENE with a short period, but it’s clean in the morning with a cross-off breeze. It’s okay, but nothing to write home about. The wind shifts onshore and it just gets worse into Wednesday and Thursday. Thursday morning does see a spike to 8ft, but it’s a short-period, lumpy mess with a solid onshore wind. That’s a kiteboarding day, not a surfing one.
Friday the 21st cleans up a bit, but the swell has pretty much died. There’s a new 6ft SSW swell in the afternoon with clean cross-off winds, but it just doesn't have the energy or the shape to make it worthwhile.
The weekend starts to wake up. Saturday the 22nd has building south swell, around 6ft in the morning pushing to 7ft in the afternoon, with clean winds. The period is still short, but there’s more push. Sunday the 23rd is similar, with 7ft of south swell, but the period stretches out to 11 seconds. Now we’re talking. There’s some real power behind it, though the surface isn’t perfect. It’s a solid, grunty day.
And then, Monday morning, the 24th of August. This is it. The standout. We’ve got 8ft of south swell with a very long 14-second period, and the energy is strong to very strong. But the wind is the headline – absolutely dead, glassy conditions. This will be the best surf of the window, period. It’s big, it’s powerful, and it’s clean as a whistle. But heed this: with 8ft on the face, this is a serious day for experienced surfers only. The long period might make it a bit walled at the beach, but the conditions will be worth the paddle. Get there early, because the wind swings onshore by the afternoon.
After that, it’s a steady decline. Tuesday and Wednesday have smaller swell, though Wednesday morning is glassy again with a little 4ft wave. It’s clean but much weaker. The rest of the week and into the weekend is mostly small, cross-onshore chop. There's a tiny window on Friday the 28th morning with light rain and 3ft of SE swell, but it’s not much.
The last stretch, from the 29th into the 2nd of September, is poor. Swell stays small and the wind turns onshore and strong, creating lumpy, messy conditions. There’s nothing here to get excited about. If you have any energy left, save it.
So my call is simple. If you’re got the skills, the only day that matters is Monday the 24th, early. Grab it. The Sunday before has some serious size, but Monday has that glassy perfection. Everything else is just about finding the cleanest bit of water and having a paddle.
Rusty, signing off.
