The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
The next 16 days have a few real moments of magic, but you’ll need to be patient and pick your windows. The first couple of days are a write-off, but things start to build from Saturday, with a standout for experienced surfers on the Sunday morning. Then, next Monday morning is the real gem of the whole period – clean, glassy, and powerful. After that, there’s a long stretch of messy, onshore junk until the very end of the month and into early September, where another good pulse shows up.
The swell energy is weak to start, with only 31 on Friday morning, and the cross-off wind from the west at 19 mph is making a mess of the small 2 ft ENE swell. Friday afternoon picks up a bit, but it’s still just marginal. Saturday morning, the 6 ft S swell at 9 seconds bumps the energy up to 640, but it’s still cross-off. Not terrible, but not great.
Now, Sunday the 23rd is where it starts to get interesting. Sunday morning, Tramandai Pier (Tramandai-Pier) has a 7 ft S swell with a 12-second period, and the wind is offshore from the west at 12 mph. The energy hits 1236, and the conditions are clean and lined up. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers – a solid standout. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
But the real highlight is Monday morning, the 24th of August. Glassy conditions with the wind swinging to WSW at just 3 mph, an 8 ft SSE groundswell pumping in with a 15-second period, and energy readings of 3058. That is some serious, powerful, long-period energy. For a beach/pier setup, this long period can make it break a bit straight, but for experienced surfers, the power and shape will be incredible. This is the best on offer.
Tuesday the 25th through Thursday the 27th morning is a big gap of poor conditions. The wind turns onshore from the ENE and NE, and the swell gets messy and choppy. Not worth paddling out.
Then, Thursday afternoon the 27th has a brief window – glassy again with a 7 ft ENE swell, but the period is short at 8 seconds, so it’s a bit lumpy. Friday the 28th is a write-off with rain and onshore wind.
The following weekend, Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th, has some small, clean ENE swell in the 4 ft to 5 ft range with glassy or offshore winds again. The energy is modest (376 to 449), but it’s clean and fun. A good option for a smaller board.
After that, there’s another big gap from Monday the 31st all the way through to the end of the data – messy, tiny, onshore and rainy. Not for us.
Then, on Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September, another good pulse shows. A 7 ft SE swell with a 10-second period, offshore wind from the west at 6 mph, and an energy reading of 1188. Another excellent window for experienced surfers, but it’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it.
All in all, your best bets are the Monday morning the 24th of August for the big, glassy, long-period groundswell, and the Sunday morning the 23rd of August as a close second. The small clean days on the 29th and 30th are worth a look for a cruise.
Rusty.
