The Lowdown
Righto, let's have a look at what Tramandai Pier (Platforma) has got cookin' over the next few weeks. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of windows where it could actually come together real nice.
First thing you'll notice, the water's sitting at a chilly 57°, and that's a whopping 5° colder than what you'd normally expect for this time of year. That's a seriously cold blast, so bring the thickest steamer you've got.
We kick things off on Thursday the 16th of July with a brief morning window. A clean little 5ft swell from the ENE with a light N wind making it cross-offshore. It's got moderate energy (381) and should be ridable, but it's pretty inconsistent, which is a bit of a bummer.
That window slams shut quick though. From Thursday afternoon all the way through Saturday the 18th, it's a write-off. Onshore and cross-shore winds from the NE ruin any chance of a wave, and even though the swell gets a bit bigger to 7ft and 8ft, it's just messy, choppy, and no good for anyone.
The first real standout comes on Sunday the 19th of July, and it's not massive, but it'll be the best we've seen. Morning sessions see a 6ft ENE swell with a light SW wind making it clean and cross-off. The energy is solid at 573. But the real gem is Sunday afternoon. The wind drops to glassy, just pure glass, with a light rain falling. The swell drops a touch to 6ft, but that glassy surface will make it feel way better than it sounds. It's an inconsistent spot, so you might be waiting for sets, but when they come they'll be clean.
We then hit a long, flat, and messy stretch. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are mostly cross-onshore junk, with only a brief glassy spell on Tuesday morning offering a slim chance on a small 4ft ENE swell. Not worth getting too excited about.
The next real highlight is Wednesday the 22nd of July. Wednesday afternoon is the one. A 4ft swell from the S, with the wind going absolutely glassy calm. The energy jumps to 627 and the period stretches out to 10 seconds. That's a proper groundswell pulse, which at a beach/pier setup can sometimes be a bit straight, but with perfect conditions, it'll be worth a paddle.
Another long gap follows. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are blown out or marginal. Friday does see a strong 12-19 mph W wind going offshore, pushing into a 7ft SSE swell, but that fresh breeze will make for a bumpy, hollow wave that's only for the experienced crew. It's a bit of a wild card.
After a week of poor and marginal conditions, the final standout of the outlook is on Friday the 31st of July. We finish strong with a Friday afternoon session that looks promising. A 5ft swell from the ESE with a 11-second period, combined with a light WNW offshore wind, giving a clean, lined-up look. The energy is moderate at 597, but the combination of a solid period and offshore wind is a good sign for some nice, shaped waves rolling through.
So, to put it simply: If you're picking, Sunday the 19th afternoon for the pure glass, or the final Friday the 31st afternoon for clean offshore lines. The rest of the time you'll be watching the wind blow.
Rusty.
