The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. We’ve got a bit of a slow start on offer here at Tramandai Pier (Platforma) — the first few entries are pretty grim, with nothing worth paddling out for until we see a real change brewing towards the end of the week and into next week. The combined swell energy is weak early on, around 44 (low energy) on Thursday morning, so you’re not missing much.
Thursday 20 August starts off rubbish: cloudy, a stiff 19 mph cross-shore from the NE, and a tiny 2 ft S swell at 8 seconds. That afternoon sees a glimmer with glassy conditions and 4 ft ENE swell, but the period’s only 6 seconds and the energy’s moderate at 200 — still pretty average.
Friday 21 August morning is clean with a 2 ft ENE swell and offshore wind, but it’s so small you’d be chasing whitewash. Friday afternoon jumps to 6 ft SSW swell with clean conditions, but the wind’s moderate cross-off — the energy’s up around 479 (moderate) but the surf quality’s still poor.
Saturday 22 August picks up a bit: morning and afternoon both see 6 ft S swell, period climbing from 9 to 10 seconds, and clean cross-off wind. Energy’s moderate at 574 and 616 — still marginal, but you could find a few if you’re keen.
The standout window kicks off Sunday 23 August morning. That’s when it gets proper: 7 ft S swell, 12-second period, clean offshore wind from the W, and the combined energy jumps to 1271 (strong). This is excellent for experienced surfers — over 8 ft would be expert-only, but 7 ft is solid. The swell direction (S) is not the optimum SSE, but the quality’s there. Watch out though — the long period at 12 seconds means it might break a bit straight at the pier, but the offshore wind will hold it up.
Monday 24 August morning is the real gem: glassy, offshore WSW wind at just 3 mph, 8 ft SSE swell at a very long 14 seconds, and combined energy at 2688 (very strong). That’s a serious groundswell — best for reefs or points, and this is a pier setup, so it’ll be powerful and clean. Only for experienced surfers. The afternoon turns onshore, so get on it early.
From Tuesday 25 August through to Thursday 27 August, we see a mix of cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions with SSE swell around 4 ft to 8 ft — energy’s moderate to strong (572 to 1558), but the wind’s messy, bringing chop. The 27th afternoon has a 8 ft ENE swell at 8 seconds, but cross-onshore wind kills it.
Friday 28 August to Sunday 30 August offers a few fun moments: Sunday 30 August morning is glassy with 5 ft E swell at 9 seconds, energy 391 (moderate), and clean conditions — that’s a decent option for a relaxed session. The swell direction (E) is off the optimum SSE, but glassy wind makes up for it.
Wednesday 3 September morning is another cracker: 7 ft S swell, 10-second period, clean cross-off wind, and strong energy at 1033 — excellent for experienced surfers again. That’s the last real standout in the run, though the afternoon on that day gets a bit onshore.
The water temp is around 60°F currently, with a -1°F anomaly — that’s pretty normal for this time of year, so no drama there.
The break is inconsistent, so when it’s on, it’s worth the wait. Crowds are possible at times, especially on those good days.
Rusty.
