Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tramandai Pier (Platforma) over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Friday, August 21 – We’re getting started with swell around 1.6m to 1.9m from the southwest, but it’s a bit short-period and the wind is cross-off, which keeps the surface clean (552 wave energy). It’s alright, but nothing to write home about. It’s a “get the dust off” kind of session, more for the intermediate crew.
Saturday, August 22 – Similar sort of morning. Swell holds at 1.9m from the south with a 10-second period. Clean face again with the W/SW wind, but it’s not a ton of power. Wave energy is moderate (652). You’ll get some, but it’s a warmer-upper.
Sunday, August 23 – Now we’re talking. The swell kicks up to 2.2m in the morning from the south, with the period stretching out to 12 seconds. That’s the real groundswell push, and with a proper offshore W wind, it’s going to be clean and lined-up. The combined energy is strong at 1347 – this is the first day where it really feels alive. The afternoon gets a bit bigger, 2.4m, but the wind swings cross-off, making it a bit trickier.
Monday, August 24 – This is the one. Morning is the pick of the whole forecast. Swell hits 2.5m from the south at a very long 14-second period. The energy is through the roof at 2643 – that’s very strong. The wind is dead glassy, light out of the southwest. This is going to be big, clean, and powerful. It’s only for the experienced crew at this size; if you’re not confident, stay on the sand. The afternoon sees the wind swing onshore out of the ESE, which will mess it up. So hit it early.
Tuesday, August 25 – The swell eases back to 1.7m, but the wind has gone onshore from the ENE, creating a cross-onshore and choppy mess (864 energy). It’s a poor session, not worth the paddle. We’re taking a break.
Wednesday, August 26 – A bit of swell left at around 1.2m to 1.6m, but the onshore wind is fresh, making it lumpy with some strength to it (1051 energy). It’s messy, and that south-east direction isn’t helping.
Thursday, August 27 – The swell drops again, down to 1.2m to 1.4m. The energy is still moderate (1326), but the cross-shore wind has a cross-chop on it. It’s marginal – one for the die-hards only.
Friday, August 28 – A new, smaller swell shows up from the ENE, but it’s short-period, only 8 seconds. The morning has light offshore wind, so it’s clean, but it’s weak (495 energy). It’s an average day for a finesse board.
Saturday, August 29 – This little ENE swell holds – 1.4m at a 9-second period. Cross-off wind keeps it tidy in the morning, but the energy is running low (330). It’s a small, clean wave for the longboard. Nothing special.
Sunday, August 30 – The wind goes onshore again, and this ENE swell gets chopped up. It’s not worth it.
Monday, August 31 – We get a pulse of ENE groundswell at 2.3m, but it’s directly under a strong onshore NE wind. That’s a full onshore mess; the energy (659) is okay, but the surface will be horrible. Not a surfer’s day.
Tuesday, September 1 – The swell backs off to 1.4m-1.6m, but the direction is all over the place. The morning has a cross-off wind which cleans it up, but it’s weak and short-period (293 energy). It’s a so-so day.
Wednesday, September 2 – The wind is onshore again, and the swell, despite being from the S, is small and weak. Not gonna get me out of bed.
Thursday, September 3 – The energy picks back up with a SSE swell, but it’s getting hammered by a fresh cross-onshore wind at 30 km/h. It’s going to be lumpy and blown out. The wave energy is strong (1291) but it’s all for nothing with that wind.
Friday, September 4 – An ENE swell is mixing with fresh onshore winds, creating horrible conditions. Big energy to the east, but the surface will be terrible. This one’s for the kitesurfers if anything.
Saturday, September 5 – More ENE swell, but again with the onshore wind. Small, weak, and chopped up. The window is closing.
So, there you have it. If you’re after the best of it, your window is this coming Sunday morning and especially Monday morning – that’s the big, clean, powerful stuff. After that, it’s a whole lot of onshore wind and messy conditions for the second week. That’s the long-range call, so it’s a bit less certain, but as it stands, we get one solid hit before the weather turns on us. Water temp is 15.8°, which is about average for us this time of year, but that south swell brings the chill. Get it while you can.
Rusty.
